Yeah that was as close to a must win game you can get in week 8.

Evans has been awesome. He's really made the best of the opportunities presented to him. If he can continue to make plays there will be some more flexibility at the WR position moving forward. I'm interested to see how it plays out myself.

Edit: in case anyone was wondering, for the Falcons this week Chris Johnson had 25 att, 84 yds, 0 tds, long run of 6.

      2014 Mid-Season Report

      SNY.TV
      Matt Cosci

The Jets have reached the half way point in their 2014 campaign with a 4-4 record. The team started strong posting a 3-0 record, but defensive struggles and costly turnovers resulted in a 4 game losing streak. The Jets attempted to salvage their season last week as they defeated division rival Buffalo to remain in the playoff race.

New York’s four wins were against teams with a combined record of 9-22. Their four losses came to opponents with a combined record of 21-10. If the Jets hope to contended for a playoff spot they will have to start defeating winning teams as their remaining games are against teams with a combined winning percentage of .660.

      OFFENSE:

Among the bright spots for the Jets is the suprising emergence of 2nd year QB Geno Smith, who is on pace to break single season team records in passing yards and touchdowns. The offensive line has protected him well allowing just 12 sacks, but has been inconsistant in the run game as Chris Ivory has failed to reach the 100 yard mark in a game since week one. RB Chris Johnson was traded after week 7, failing to provide the big play ability that was expected. The Jets do not have a run of 20 yards yet this season. Rookie TE Jace Amaro has also emerged as a big playmaker and has been Smith’s favorite target through 8 games. Eric Decker and Jeremy Kerley have also been relaible targets.

      DEFENSE:

The biggest disapointment thus far has to be the play of the defense. After a hot start the unit has been in a tail spin, alowing over 30 points in 5 straight games. Struggles were expected in a thin secondary, but the tackling and run defense has also been suspect. OLB Quintin Coples has provided a much needed pass rush from the edge of the defense, but Muhammad Wilkerson has been unproductive in what is his contract year. If the Jets hope to improve on this side of the ball, Wilkerson has to step up in their remaining games. The other glaring issue has been the lack of turnovers. Through 8 games the Jets have just 3 int’s and 2 fumble recoveries. If they continue to surrender yardage at the current pace, their only hope is to increase the turnover rate.

      SPECIAL TEAMS

Kicker Nick Folk has been perfect so far and should be considered one of the most reliable kickers in the league. Punter Ryan Quigley on the other hand has been dreadful with a net avg of 31.5. The return game has been solid, but the coverage unit is inconsistent.

      Remaining Schedule

      Week 9 @ Chiefs (3-3-1)
      Week 10 vs Steelers (5-3)
      Week 11 Bye
      Week 12 @ Buffalo (5-3)
      Week 13 vs Miami (3-3-1)
      Week 14 @ Minnesota (7-1)
      Week 15 @ Tennessee (1-7)
Week 16 vs New England (7-1)
      Week 17 @ Miami (3-3-1)

I really like the midseaon recap, well done. With the struggles on defense are there any college prospects that you have in mind to target?

Thanks for the feedback and question whitey!

Defense will definitely be a priority in the draft and free agency. There appears to be a good amount of depth at the CB position in the draft. We can use an upgrade at FS too, but it’s a weak draft class at that position and we just took Pryor in the 1st round last year. I don’t really value the position enough to justify using another high pick there, unless it’s the second coming of Ed Reed.

OLB & MLB are also positions I will scout heavily. Pace has been decent, but he’s getting old and I’d like to add another edge rusher to team up with Coples. David Harris’ contract is expiring and Demario Davis has been a bit disappointing.

As for specific players I’ve concentrated mostly on CB’s. Here’s my top 3 at the position right now with their projected draft position.

          RD.1 #12: Philip Pope/Miami/6’0”/187lb/SPD-A/ACC-A/MCV-A/ZCV-B/PRS-B/PLR-C/AWR-C

          RD.1 #32: Tavares Pittman/Nebraska/5”11”/185lb/SPD-A/ACC-A/MCV-B/ZCV-B/PRS-B/PLR-D/AWR-C

          RD.1 #31: Rashad Livingston/Auburn/6’1”/186lb/SPD-A/ACC-A/MCV-B/ZCV-B/PRS-B/PLR-C/AWR-D

It kills me to think that I may use a 1st round pick on a CB after we took Milliner #9 overall in ’13. His ratings might progress decently, but he’s not the difference maker you’d expect with that draft pedigree.

Absolutely love the mid-season report. As always your writing is just top notch, I can't place what it is but your franchise has such an organic feel to it, I love it. Would love to see you do some pieces on your scouting? I would definitely say defense has to be the focus for this coming offseason. Maybe a mid-round running back though, although I feel like you have a lot of projects already at that position.

Thanks so much Cheese, that means a lot.

This is the point in the season when I start scouting. I like to save up some scouting points and get a feel for where our possible draft position might be before starting. I’ll think about a way to incorporate it. Thanks for the suggestion.

As for the running game, the immediate need on offense is going to be on the offensive line. Both starting guards have expiring contracts and need to be upgraded. I think that would give a boost to the rushing attack. RT is also a position that can use improvement and age is starting to creep up on D’Brick & Mangold. With the needs on defense and the oline, the RB position isn’t very high on my list right now. With that said, if the right player is available in the middle/late rounds I will consider it.

Do you draft by need or by best player available? I know for me I usually draft for need unless someone special is there and i cant pass on their talent.

Great question whitey and I'd like to answer it, but I've been playing with an idea that your question would be perfect for.

There's a few dynasties on the forum that have "create a coach/create a recruit" which I think is really cool. I like the idea of an interactive element to the project.

Jets new GM Rod Graves hasn't held his press conference yet (he's been busy). My idea is to have members of the forum submit questions for the press conference and others in the future. You can post or pm me your questions, just include a name for your reporter and who they work for (tri-state media) or you can leave it to me. Either way I'll identify which members posed the question. I'll make the cutoff for questions March 7th, 8am.

Whitey, I'll consider this the first question submitted. Just give me your "create a reporter" info, if you want.

"Knowing that you inherited a team and someone else's ideas for an offense and defense, what is your ultimate vision for the kind of team and for that matter the kind of organization you want to build in New York?

Also any chance we ever see the Jets with a stadium of their own?"

The Jets travel to Arrowhead as they look to build off their week 8 victory over the Bills. Kansas City will be without their star running back Jamal Charles, but former Jets RB Joe McKight has been surprisingly productive in his absence.

The battle between two .500 teams could have playoff implications as both teams face a must win scenario in week 9. The Chiefs boast a stingy defense even without stud DT Dontari Poe. The Jets will have their hands full with edge rushers Justin Houston and Tamba Hali and veteran LB Derrick Johnson is a terror against the run.

The Jets will have to shut down the Chiefs running game and force Alex Smith into 3rd and long situations if they hope to pull out a win. New York's offense has being explosive in the passing game and Rex Ryan announced earlier that rookie WR Shaq Evans will get his first career start this week. In limited action, Evans has provided big plays and being teamed with Eric Decker, Jace Amaro and Jeremy Kerley will present a big challenge for the Chiefs secondary.

Just read the Jets (real team) signed CB Kendall James to a reserve/futures contract a few days ago. If you don't recall, I signed James prior to the '14 season. He hasn't played much but I like his potential.

Just figured I'd mention it. It's always fun to see your team sign the same players after you did.

Kansas City, MO -- The Jets struggles this season can be attributed to poor fourth quarter performances, but in Kansas City this Sunday the team overcame a late ten point deficit to tie the game and eventually earned an overtime victory over the Chiefs, 34-31.

At first glance it looked like the Jets caught a break with the absence of the Chief’s star running back Jamaal Charles. That assumption was quickly disposed of as former Jets running back Joe McKnight put on a clinic versus his old team. The McKnight show started early on the Chief’s opening possession when he broke free for a 40 yard touchdown run. On the drive he sliced through the Jets defense for two consecutive 14 yard runs.

New York responded quickly on their first drive moving 74 yards in nine plays. Geno Smith picked up where he left off last week finding Jace Amaro for gains on 26 and 15 yards. The pass plays set up a 10 yard touchdown pass to Shaq Evans that tied the score at seven.

The back and forth continued when Kansas City went on a long 19 play drive covering 79 yards. Alex Smith completed three, 3rd down conversions and McKnight added 27 rushing yards which ended with a one yard touchdown pass from Smith to Anthony Fasano.

Following a missed 52 yard field goal attempt by Ryan Succop, the Jets finally found their ground game that had been stifled up until that point. Chris Ivory rushed for 33 yards on the half’s final drive that ended with Geno Smith throwing his second touchdown of the day, this time to Jeremy Kerley for 20 yards.

Kansas City broke the 14 all tie with 2:43remaining in the third quarter as they put together another long, time consuming drive. The 11 play jaunt down the field was keyed by a 23 yard run by McKnight on a 3rd and 1. McKnight finished the day with 168 yards on the ground and gave the Chiefs a 21-14 lead with a one yard score heading into the 4th quarter.

A Ryan Succop 26 yard field goal extended the Chief lead to ten, but the Jets would strike back fast when rookie Shaq Evans contributed another big play with a 75 yard catch and run to the end zone. Evans, in his first career start, has burst onto the scene adding explosive plays to the Jets offense.

Joe McKnight would not go quietly as he tore through New York's defense in the Chiefs next possession. McKnight found the end zone for the third time on a 9 yard pass from Alex Smith which put the lead back to 10.

Down two scores the Jets went into hurry up mode and Geno Smith didn't disappoint. Smith completed 6 of 7 passes for 72 yards which included a 20 yard completion to David Nelson on a 4th and 2. Jeremy Kerley hauled in a 18 yard pass to get the ball to the Chiefs 1 yard line and on the next play Bilal Powell powered over the goal line, making it a 3 point game.

New York's defense tightened up and forced a punt after 5 plays. With less than one minute remaining, Jeremy Kerley fielded the punt, avoided a tackle and headed down the sideline for a 41 yard return. He would be pushed out at the Chiefs 41 and after 4 quick plays Nick Folk would tie the game on a 33 yard field goal, sending the contest into overtime.

In overtime Kerley again provided a big play with a 35 yard pass from Smith. The play set up a Folk 29 yard field goal to give the Jets their first lead. Kansas City's overtime possession was hindered by a holding penalty and two sacks. On 4th and 28 from their own 13, Alex Smith was sacked again by Sheldon Richardson, ending the game and giving the Jets their second straight come from behind win.

On the teams performance Rex Ryan said in post game, "We did our best to make McKnight look like Walter freakin Payton out there, but we came together and got a big win."

I let this one get away from me.. really sucks because I actually caught it from the beginning. I've gotta catch up soon. In the meantime, great win! Gotta love those overtime battles. Geno Smith lit it up outside of those two picks

Thanks for checking in beast! Geno's been hot the last couple of weeks. The picks didn't amount to anything that's why I didn't mention them in the report, but I did fail to mention our 7 sacks of Alex Smith, oh well.

It's a lot to read so if you want a quick catch up check out pages 12 & 14. That should get you up to speed. There's a storyline post on page 11 that might interest you too.
