Fantastic win over the Chiefs. The team really came together there in the fourth quarter. Evans continues to impress in the passing game and Geno is playing well.

That run defense was more than a little concerning. Joe McKnight certainly got his revenge.

    Loving this as always!

          Player News

Texas QB Joseph Cosby suffers torn rotator cuff to throwing shoulder. Cosby was projected to be a 1st round draft pick next spring. The one knock on Cosby from scouts was concerns over his durability and this most recent injury will drastically effect his draft status.

          Scouting Spotlight
           photo image_56.jpg

          OLB – Jordon Pearson, LSU
Draft Projection: RD. 1 Pick #13
          Age: 23
          HT: 6’2”
          WT: 251
          Style: 3-4 Pass Rusher
          Scheme: Zone Blitz 3-4
          Production Grade: 83
          Physical Attributes: SPD – A, ACC – B, STR – B, INJ – B
          Position Specific Grades: TAK – B, BSH – B, PMV – B, FMV – B, ZCV – C
          Instincts: PRC – D, AWR – F
          Intangible: D

          Scouting Notes:

Good production against top competition in SEC. A bit undersized for OLB in 3-4 and durability could be a concern. Physically gifted player with elite pass rush skills, but lacks the instincts given his projected draft position.

Mr Cheese is a smart man. I like the breakdown. I would avoid this LB if it were me drafting. He has the measurables but lacks the intangables to be an all around LB. If you just need a spot pass rush guy then he would be great and maybe develope into a good LB in the NFL, but not a mid 1st round pick in my books.

Love the incorporated scouting, it is very cool to get an idea for the players you are looking at.

Thanks, yeah that AWR grade scares me. At least with a D you know where the floor is, but F....sheesh. I agree overall with your assessment.

                  Jets introduce GM Rod Graves

                  SNY.TV
                  Matt Cosci Nov 5, 2014

Florham Park, N.J. New York Jets owner Mark Murphy introduced his new General Manager this morning in a press conference at the Jets practice facility. Both men made themselves available to answer questions. Below is a transcript containing some of the more interesting exchanges.

Q: Knowing that you inherited a team and someone else’s ideas for an offense and defense, what’s your ultimate vision for kind of team and for that matter the kind of organization you want to build in New York?

Also any chance we ever see the Jets with a stadium of their own? – Dan Clayton, New York Times (Cheese2121)

A: (Graves) I began my career in the NFL in 1984 as regional scout for the Chicago Bears. In the 30 years I’ve been involved in personnel I’ve experienced more than one way to create a winner. In Chicago it was a great defense, in Arizona it was a high powered offense. Today’s NFL is more diverse than ever before. One week we could face a spread offense and the next week a west coast offense with read option sprinkled in. That goes for defense too, from Cover 2 to hybrid 3-4’s. To combat this, our goal is to build a smart, versatile, and aggressive team that will be a contender each year. The rules of today’s game lean towards the passing game and we’ve seen an identity begin to emerge in that area around Geno Smith. We will continue to develop that. Our defense has shown the ability to get after the QB, but creating turnovers on the back end of the defense is also important and is an area we need to improve on.

We will put a heavy emphasis on drafting, developing players and will use free agency and the trade market to address needs. Our fans deserve the best possible product on the field each and every year. As for what’s been inherited, one of the advantages I believe I have over someone from the outside coming in is that I’ve been here the last two years. I’m very familiar with our players and coaches, their strengths and weaknesses. I can quickly identify how we go about shaping our team into what I’ve described and I’m very excited about that. I’ll look to Mr. Murphy to answer your stadium question.

A: (Murphy) It’s MURPH, Rod, MURPH! Just kidding bud.(laughter)

Ah yes, the stadium question. Other than bringing a Super Bowl victory to Jets fans, there’s nothing more I’d like to give them than a home of their own, a place that gives them a greater sense of identity with the team, a true home field advantage and one that’s affordable for families. That’s easier said than done, particularly in the tri state area. I’ve learned to never say never, but we’re just a couple of seasons into our current arrangement so I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

Q: Can you give us a sense of your draft philosophy? Do you draft by need or by best player available? - Drew White, Pittsburgh Post Herald (whitey7886)

A: (Graves) Welcome to New York, you must be in from Pittsburgh for the Steelers this week! As I alluded to before, the foundation of our roster will be acquired through the draft, much like your hometown team. I think the best way to sustain a perennial contender is to draft the right players, develop those players and then pay those players. We won’t shy away from free agency, but it’s an inflated market that brings on more risk so it’s important to spend wisely. The better we draft and develop our own players, the less risk we will assume in free agency.

I don’t subscribe to one stated philosophy when it comes to drafting. Much of it depends on where we think we are with our current roster makeup. If we grade a player worthy of a pick in the first two rounds then the expectation is for an immediate impact, either as a starter or with significant playing time. We want to maximize our return on players under their rookie contracts. This dictates more of a needs based drafting approach, if I had to put a stamp on it. Following those first two rounds we consider players as more of the developmental type, but we will have high expectations for all of them. With that being said, if our roster is free of immediate needs or if the value isn’t there to address them, we will consider taking players who offer greater depth or who may be a year away from contributing.

Q: Mr. Murphy, Sheldon Richardson won rookie of the year last season and Geno Smith is currently leading the league in passing. Calvin Pryor, Jace Amaro, and Shaq Evans have all had productive rookie seasons so far. All of this young talent was added under the management of John Idzik. Do you think your decision to fire him was premature? – Jack Reilly, Newsday

A: No, but I will give credit where credit is due. John did a fine job adding players through the draft. Our differences came from what I determined was a lack of a compatible vision for the franchise. I want a team, and the fans want a team that will strive to be great each and every season. We will not sit on a pile of cash and call it good cap management. We will not deviate from our philosophy when faced with media scrutiny. Rod and I share a vision for this franchise and I’m confident we will see it through. I should also mention that the scouting department that vetted those players you mentioned was under the direction of Rod Graves.

There were some interesting tidbits here, mostly coming from the owner who didn’t rule out a stadium of their own down the line and a couple of veiled shots at his former GM. There was also a question whether or not head coach Rex Ryan fit into the duo’s plans, but both men left little to report as they firmly backed Ryan.

                        Game Notes
The Jets look to extend their two game winning streak as they return home this week to face the Pittsburgh Steelers. Both teams enter the game with a 5-4 record and both also trail two teams in their respective divisions, so this game could have big playoff implications.

Ben Roethlisberger returns to the lineup after missing the last two games. The Steelers field a balanced attack with two of the premier offensive weapons in the league. Antonio Brown presents a significant threat to a Jets defense that has struggled terribly against the pass, and running back Le'veon Bell can gain yards both running and receiving.

The Jets offense now ranks first in the league in total offense and in passing. Geno Smith has been on a tear the last two weeks and has found a new toy in rookie receiver Shaq Evans. In combination with Eric Decker, Jace Amaro, and Jeremy Kerley, the Jets suddenly have a potent pass offense to complement their bruising running back Chris Ivory.

Both teams rank at the bottom of the league in pass defense so expect some fireworks in this one.

Thanks for contributing guys! I'll probably do another one at the end of the season so anything involving offseason changes and such, hold onto those. Feel free to question/comment on anything else until then.

East Rutherford, N.J.-- Ben Roethlisberger returned to the Steelers lineup this week and put on a performance for the ages. Big Ben threw just two incompletions for the game going 27/29 for 338 yards and 3 touchdowns as Pittsburgh ended the Jets two game winning streak with a 35-24 victory.

In a game that was expected to be a shoutout the scoring was limited in the first quarter, but Roethlisberger was red hot from the very beginning. The Steelers took the opening kickoff and traveled 80 yards in 12 plays which was lead by Roethlisberger completing his first 8 passes. With much of the defenses attention paid to receiver Antonio Brown, Roethlisberger would find veteran TE Heath Miller four times for 43 yards. Miller ended the day with 9 catches for 125 yards. Le'veon Bell opened the scoring with a eight yard touchdown run.

The Steelers took a 7-3 lead into the second quarter and that's when they forged what would prove to be an insurmountable lead. Their first score of the quarter was set up by an interception by linebacker Ryan Shazier deep in Jets territory. Three plays later Roethlisberger completed a 1 yard touchdown to FB Chris Pressley.

The jets were unable to mount any semblance of a run game and Geno Smith struggled mightily with his accuracy in the first half. After a Jets 3 and out Pittsburgh went on another long drive down to the Jets 5 yard line which ended with a 5 yard touchdown pass from Roethlisberger to a wide open Marcus Wheaton.

With less than two minutes remaining in the half, down by 18, New York would attempt another scoring drive before heading into the locker room, but this time it backfired. The Jets were forced to punt after three quick plays which gave the Steelers another scoring opportunity. Pittsburgh took advantage when Roethlisberger hit Le'veon Bell on a screen pass and watched him dodge Jets defenders all the way to the endzone for a 65 yard score. The 21 point second quarter outburst gave the Steelers a 28-3 at the break.

With their running game completely negated by a stiff Pittsburgh front seven, the Jets attempted a second a half comeback solely on the arm of Geno Smith. After a first half which saw him complete just 7 of 18 passes and throw a costly interception, Smith did his best to carry his team back from the 25 point deficit. Smith started strong going 8 of 10, leading his team down to the Steelers 7 yard line were he would then find receiver David Nelson for New York's first touchdown. The drive proved costly however as rookie Shaq Evans was lost for the remainder of the game with a foot injury.

The Jets defense was successful in limiting the Steelers running game all day and they continued to do so in the second half. Following a Steelers 3 and out, Smith put together another string of completions as the offense traveled 63 yards and closed the gap to 11 on a 3 yard touchdown pass to Bilal Powell.

The tide seemed to be turning as the Jets defense recorded 3 sacks of Roethlisberger on the Steelers next drive, forcing another punt. That momentum was quickly defused when on 2nd and 7 on their own 27 yard line, Smith committed his second turnover of the day, this time being picked off by linebacker Lawrence Timmons.

Four plays later Steelers FB Chris Pressley scored for the second time on a two yard run which gave Pittsburgh an 18 point cushion with less than six minutes remaining. New York scored once more on a pass from Smith to Jace Amaro that covered 17 yards, but the lead proved to be too great as time ran out on the Jets.

Addressing his teams fifth loss Rex Ryan said, "We failed to execute on both sides of the ball and our turnovers proved to be to great to overcome. We have a bye week coming and we need to regroup from this loss and make a push for the playoffs."

Been following this silently so far, this is really good! I'm really surprised to see Geno playing this well, was kinda hoping you'd have to draft a QB. Anyways, tough loss against the Steelers, but there's still plenty of time to rebound and make the playoffs.

                                Thanks Newscaster!

You're not alone on Geno. The performance he gave in the first half against the Steelers is the Geno I was expecting for the season. Balls were sailing high and far from receivers, but overall he's been pretty darn good. It also helps that some legit weapons have emerged around him. I was expecting to have to draft a QB too, but with him playing so well in just his second year I can concentrate on upgrades in other areas.

The way it looks right now we'll have to go on a good run in the final six games as we are currently behind 4 teams in the wild card. We have 4 division games and a trip to Minnesota who stand at 7-2. The Titans are the only weak team we face down the stretch. I will put up w/c standings after week 11.

                                Thanks for chiming in!
