      2016 Jets Season Preview:

The key to success this season? Forgetting the past. Forget January 3, 2016. Nobody needs to know what happened that snowy day in Buffalo. That was then, this is now. We still got Fitzy, Marshall, Decker, Revis, Harris, and Wilkerson. That loss wasn't an indication of the talent on this team. The 10 other wins were. Build on that, and build on a great preseason. Y'all got each other's backs. One step at a time. We start with Cincy. Don't even think about that Thursday Night game week 2 in Buffalo. Don't even think about the Sunday Night game in November against Tom Brady. Stay focused on the present. Your passion and determination will lead you where you want to go. Enforce the No Fly Zone. #JetUp. Fans, it's on you too. Bring the noise! The promised land? Hey, it's been done before. Show the world who you are. You. Are. WARRIORS.

Yes it will, especially if Brady plays. I'm not sure if he's suspended in my CFM, because he's still on the depth chart for week 1. But, Jimmy G was the starter in an exhibition game I played against them, and Fitzpatrick was a starter for the Jets. I had to sign him when I made my CFM file. You would think someone like Fitzpatrick, who signed a month ago, would have ample time to be put on the roster.

              Listen to me rant...

                Jets Gameday Preview: Week 1

Cincy is coming to town to open the season on the 15th anniversary of that fateful fay at the World Trade Center.

It's the Bengals. Consistently one of the best teams in the AFC, in the regular season, over the last 5 years. The reason? Andy Dalton, America's Favorite Redhead. This year, though he has lost one of his weapons, Mohamed Sanu, to the coaching style of LopaKa, down in the ATL. But, he still has his best friend, A.J. Green, and his 6 foot 7 beast of a tight end, Tyler Eifert, which is crucial in this modern era of tight end awesomeness. Don't look now, but there is also a two headed rushing monster. Gio Bernard and Jeremy Hill all but split the carries in the preseason, and can both terrorize defenses.

But, there's more. This team plays in the AFC North, which means they have to have a tough defense in order to survive. And they sure are tough, and borderline dirty. Just ask Vontaze Burfict and Adam "Pac-man" Jones. The former concussed Antonio Brown in the playoffs last year, and the latter sure has his history off the field. There are plenty of good guys too, that still strike fear into the opposition, like the Pro Bowl pass defenders Geno Atkins and Carlos Dunlap, and linebacker Rey Maualuga. But have no fear, we are the Jets! We got this. Limit the turnovers, hope for a close game, and we just might make this interesting. We got big things planned this year. It starts now.

Gameday Recap: Jets 24, Bengals 20
Jets defense steps up after Revis goes down with injury

The team of Jordan Jenkins (48), Tarow Barney (60), and Deon Simon (93) swarm Jeremy Hill in the backfield on 4th and goal from the 1 with under 3:00 to play. The stop all but sealed the Jets win, as the defense stepped up after star CB Darrelle Revis left with an injury earlier in the drive.

How about that for a first game? Both offenses looked really good. Ryan Fitzpatrick didn't show a whole lot of rust, as some thought he might, while the team of Andy Dalton and A.J. Green were basically unstoppable. The Bengals began the season by taking it right to the house on the game's first drive, with Dalton finding Green on a toe tap fade from 3 yards out. The Jets responded with a score of their own on their initial drive of the season, but poor playcalling in the red zone led to a 24 yard Nick Folk field goal instead of a touchdown, making it 7-3 in favor of Cincy. The Jets defense did wake up on the very next drive however, forcing the Bengals' stout offense off the field after only one first down. That's when the offense found themselves. Fitz rolled out and found Jace Amaro, which is something he did only 7 or 8 times all of last season. What was even rarer was the fact that Amaro proceeded to run 35 yards to paydirt, making it a 48 yard touchdown catch and run, the Jets first touchdown of 2016.

On the next drive, Jordan Jenkins, in his first career game, met Gio Bernard as soon as Dalton handed him the ball, and jarred it loose. Calvin Pryor was the man in the right place at the right time, trying to scoop and score, but was denied by Cincinnati RT Eric Winston. Anyhow, the Jets went three and out from there, setting up a 57 yard field goal, which Nick Folk struck perfectly, but hit off the crossbar, one of two misses on the day. That failure set up one last scoring drive for the Bengals, a classic "There's no way in hell you're stopping us" drive, ending with a Mike Nugent field goal to tie it up at 10 heading into the locker room.

The Jets took the ball and ran with it out of the half, speaking figuratively of course. Matt Forte didn't get any running room all day (until garbage time), so the offense stalled a little bit. But, so did the Bengals, so it was all good. The third quarter turned into a punt fest, and was lacking in entertainment value, until Mike Nugent smacked a field goal in from 30 yards. At the start of the 4th, Todd Bowles and Chan Gailey felt bad for Forte, so they tried to get him involved in the passing game. On a first down at the 42, Fitz did a quick five step drop and dumped it off to Forte on a screen. He had 3 blockers trying block 4 guys, so at best, he would have to make one miss. Instead, he just outran him, and then threw up a stiff arm at the goal line as a couple of Bengals caught up to him. What's up with all of these explosive plays by the Jets? 17-13 New York. But, that was only when things got good.

Forte fights through the grasp of Pac-man Jones to ensure that he hits paydirt after his long catch and run on the screen pass.

The Bengals rallied quickly, and with a vengeance. Just 4 plays after Forte's score, A.J. Green made Marcus Gilchrist and Buster Skrine look foolish, the only time all day Gilchrist got beat as he finished with 16 tackles, and took it 56 yards to the house, allowing the lead to switch hands for the fifth time. It was 20-17 Cincinnati, but with 8:53 remaining, more than enough times for both teams to score again.

After Green beat Skrine and Gilchrist, only Revis had any shot of catching up to him, as you can see here.

The Jets wanted to kill some clock, and methodically work the ball down the field, something Freday's teams were so good at when he was the head coach. But they couldn't. Fitzpatrick found Amaro on a crossing route, and 62 yards later, he was into the end zone again (for what proved to be the game winning score). As exciting as those big plays are, the Jets knew they had scored to soon. After all, 21 points had been score collectively by the two teams in a 3 minute span, after a string of explosive offensive plays.

Amaro scores on another long catch and run. 24-20 J-E-T-S Jets! Jets! Jets!

For the first 8 plays of the next drive, the Jets were bending on defense, and slowly breaking. They weren't giving up big plays, rather short passes that they provided no resistance too. Occasionally, they brought pressure on Dalton, but that was it. Jeremy Hill was getting decent yards on the ground, as Gio Bernard would not return after the hit that knocked some screws, and the ball, loose back in the second. On a third down and 7 with about 4:30 to play, Dalton found Brandon LaFell for a first down, and Revis dove to tackle him, but missed, and landed awkwardly, and didn't get up. He was eventually carted off with an upper body injury. More to come on that soon. MetLife Stadium turned deathly quiet. The Jets' best player looked to have a pretty serious injury. How could anyone refocus on the game after the team leader goes down? Nobody expected them to bounce back, and the first few plays showed why. The Bengals got down to the 1 in 3 plays, after a couple of passes, to Eifert, Brian Hartline, and then Green, who tried everything to cross the goal line, but just couldn't. Then, Tarow Barney jumped offsides, so it was first and goal from about the one inch line with 3 minutes to play.

On first down, the Jets brought the house, because it's not like they had anything to lose. Dalton saw it immediately, and just chucked it out of the back of the end zone. On second down, Dalton handed it off to Hill, who was stuffed by Sheldon Richardson for no gain. On third down, with the crowd back in it after the ringing of Hells Bells, Dalton had all sorts of time, rolled out, and threw it away. He couldn't run it in because David Harris was a spying the QB on the play. So then it got even louder. The Bells tolled again. The Jets D-Line did jumping jacks, urging the crowd to scream their heads off. The Bengals calmly walked up to the line, which had been moved back to the 2 after the second down run by Hill. Staring Fireman Ed right in the face, Dalton called for the snap and handed it off to Hill, but it was too late. The threesome of Jordan Jenkins, Tarow Barney, and Deon Simon had already beaten their blocks and were waiting. Together, they slammed the former LSU star to the turf, and ran to the sideline to greet a giddy Ryan Fitzpatrick, their biggest cheerleader, as usual.

But it was no easy task from there. The Jets had the ball at their own 2 with 2 minutes left. They hadn't gotten anything on the ground all day, and were at risk of a negative play any time Forte touched the ball. The first play went for nothing, and led to the two minute warning, allowing Marvin Lewis to save his timeouts. The next play, out of the break was even worse. Carlos Dunlap met Forte at the goal line, and Forte just managed to get to the 1. It took a 3rd down pass to Brandon Marshall (who had an otherwise quiet day) to get some breathing room, and start forcing Cincy to use some timeouts. All the Jets had to do now was run out the clock, which Forte did, actually getting 25 yards on 3 carries, a solid way to end a poor rushing day in his Jets debut. But, the Jets won, so it's okay. What's not okay is Revis. He might be out a while.

Nice first win, but tough losing Revis. Hopefully Buster Skrine and the rest of your secondary can make up for his absence.

I hate that I'm without Revis. I'll specify how long he's out shortly. I just hope that I keep every game close. I hate losing via blowouts, and I hate blowing people out. Skrine is the best remaining corner, and he's like 73 OVR. Not good.

Revis has broken collarbone, expected to miss 2 months

September 12, 2016 --- Well, what can I say? The leader of this New York Jets team, the heart and soul of the defense, and the rock of an otherwise porous secondary, is down until November. This really puts a damper on the Jets' psyche, and this early in the season, has the potential to have a fatal effect on this team. The play was pretty basic. Andy Dalton found Brandon LaFell on a crossing route, and Darrelle Revis dove and just flat out missed. At the time, it didn't seem like a big deal. Revis actually got up and finished the play, before running over to the sideline like nothing was wrong, when, in reality everything was wrong. He had broken his collarbone.

So, what does this all mean? Well, Revis is officially stated as being sidelined for 8 weeks, which puts him on track to return Nov. 13, when the Jets host Los Angeles. Buster Skrine is now the number 1 cornerback on the roster, but will not be expected to take over Revis' role as a lockdown corner by any means. Skrine, and others, like Dee Milliner and Juston Burris, will just try to keep everything in the secondary together, and prevent opposing passing offenses from torching them. The Jets will adapt more of a zone defense, in order to try to keep everything in front of the secondary, with two safeties, Marcus Gilchrist and Calvin Pryor III, plenty capable of playing centerfield and patrolling everything. Of course, the defense is still expected to falter a bit, and that's okay, as long as the offense plays the same way it did this week against the Bengals: without a turnover. Turnovers are the cardinal sin when you are lacking firepower on defense. But this is still going to be a big blow, especially heading into the biggest redemption game for the 2016 Jets. They've waited for this showdown with the Bills, but that's not the only big game coming up. After the Bills, the Jets play 4 straight games against 2015 playoff teams, including the Chiefs, Seahawks, Steelers, and Cardinals (the day after RoundingThird's birthday), 3 of which are on the road. Three more games, against Baltimore, Cleveland, and Miami, round out Revis's absence. If the Jets can emerge from this stretch 4-4, they will sit at 5-4, and still be in a relatively good position to make a playoff run when Revis comes back, even though they still have to play New England twice. Anything under .500, though, makes it tough to come back from when Revis returns. But, let's let the games play themselves out, shall we? As Bill Belichick always says, it's all about the "Next Man Up."

Nice win to start the season but losing Revis really hurts. Hopefully Skrine and the others can at least try to manage the situation some until his return. Hang in there. Looking forward to the game against Buffalo!

I can't wait for that game. IRL, my friend (who's a Bills fan) wants me to go to a sports bar with him to watch it. Gonna be fun. Then, of course, I'll be going to the Browns game.

losing Revis is gonna hurt. Really going to need your front 7 to get pressure on the quarterback now to help out your secondary
