Re: ODU : Building a Monarchy
NORFOLK, VA (AP) - Today Monarch fans were shocked by the announcement of unknown high school Offense Coordinator Nicholas Eck as the new leader of the Monarchs Football program. Long time Head Coach Bobby Wilder will be transitioning to Senior Associate AD of Football as the school finishes up their transition from FCS to FBS.
The 2013 season will be as an Independent while the school and Athletic Department looks for a long term conference home for the school. "We are happy to announce that Bobby Wilder will join the Monarch family in a administrative position to help us more in our transition to the FBS level.", Athletic Director Dr. Camden Selig announced to a shocked room. He continued, "Wilder helped bring this team up from the beginning in 2009 to the start of our transition last season. With that, we knew we needed to utilize him in a larger role in our Athletic Department."
Wilder announced that his successor would be an Offensive Coordinator of a High School in Oregon after a short search. "We decided that Mr. Eck would be a huge success here at Old Dominion based on his offensive prowess. He will be a successful coach at the NCAA level and I needed to make sure ODU would be the one to grab him before someone else."
Eck utilizes a slowed down approach to the Spread offense. They look to make sure the big playmakers touch the ball as much as possible. Eck spoke shortly about his style they will utilize, "We will look to run a speed running game getting the ball to Lowry and Pascal as much as possible. I know they can make the difference in the game and look to them as leaders on the offense."
Eck opened up a small look at his playbook showing just the formations they will use. They are:
- Ace Bunch Spread
- I Form Hulk
- I Form Normal
- Maryland I Heavy
- Pistol Bunch
- Pistol Full House
- Pistol Slot Flex Wing
- Shotgun 5 WR Bunch
- Shotgun 5 WR Flex
- Shotgun Bunch Quads
- Shotgun F Twins Over
- Shotgun Heavy
- Shotgun Monster
- Shotgun Normal HB Weak
- Shotgun Split Offset
- Shotgun Spread
- Shotgun Trey 4 WR
- Wildcat Monarchs (Fight Song Variation)
- Wildcat Normal
- Hail Mary
- Goal Heavy
- Goal Normal
We will see how the team looks on August 31st as they open up the 2013 season at East Carolina.Comment

East Carolina Holds Off Pesky Monarchs
GREENVILLE, NC (AP) - The kickoff for the 2013 season has commenced, and the Pirates were able to hold off the Monarchs 42-40 in a tight battle. Old Dominion stayed in the game late, but a costly fumble with 3:25 left in the game helped the Pirates hold on to the win.
Washington and the Monarchs were running the triple option when the fumble occurred. "I went to pitch to my boy, but didn't see the defender had him locked up until it was too late.", Washington told reporters. "I take the full blame for this loss and will look forward to the film room to see where I can adjust for next time."
The win for the Pirates starts off the 2013 campaign in a positive way. Quarterback Phillip Nelson was named player of the game throwing for 328 yards on 35 of 49 passing. He hooked up with three different receivers in the two point win. He was quoted after the game saying he was happy with what he saw defensively and knew he would be able to find his guys in open positions.

Re: ODU : Building a Monarchy
I'm the same way. I used to run a base cover 3 almost all game. A while back I started to change it up and run a lot more blitz packages. That improved my defense a lotComment

Maryland Flies High in Big Win
COLLEGE PARK, MD (AP) - Perry Hills had the half to remember as he torched the Monarchs in the first half on 13 of 14 passing for 252 yards and 3 touchdowns en route to the 48-18 victory Saturday. Hills finished the day 20 of 24 for 306 yards.
The Monarchs were not able to move the ball for the first three quarters as they did not reach the 100 yard total offense mark until the early parts of the third quarter.
"It was a frustrating game all around. We couldn't set up our run game and the passing game was atrocious.", Coach Eck told reporters after the loss. "We need to step up and practice even harder so we do not repeat this performance. Defense will need to tighten up on tackling or we won't stand a chance in a game this season."
