    The Career of Brian Howell

    THE CAREER OF BRIAN HOWELL

    Background

2011 Kansas HS Football State Championship
Lawrence HS Lions vs Manhattan HS Indians

Brian Howell, junior, took the snap for the Lawrence Lions late in the fourth quarter, Lions down by 3. Play action to the halfback. Rolled out to the right. Went through his reads, when WHAM! Hit on the blindside by a 6'5" 260-pound Manhattan defensive end. Fumble by Howell, returned for a touchdown by Manhattan. Howell lay on the field at Welch Stadium in pain, grabbing his right thigh.

Manhattan won by 13 points, and, even worse, Howell broke his femur on the hit. He had gone down awkwardly after the hit, and would be out until the middle of May 2012.

Before this, Howell had been a very good junior, then a three-star recruit. With this injury, he had said he'd be dropping football, and was removed entirely from all recruiting databases. With him rejoining football in mid-June, he was reset on all recruiting databases nationally. He had to restart completely, and come back from adversity.

The question now, for the Lawrence Lions, is: Can Brian Howell recover from this injury and gain scholarships from prominent schools?

Can Lawrence make it back to the state championship game?

    Stay tuned to find out.

Hopefully we can post. Fun to see a bunch of these popping up again. Wish I had done a different position though since they are all QBs at the moment.

          Good luck, following.

LAWRENCE DESTROYS GARDEN CITY IN SEASON OPENER

Brian Howell looked shaky in his return with 3 interceptions, but it didn't matter as Lawrence blew out Garden City in their season opener, 56-3. Howell had 6 touchdowns through the air, with 434 yards. He had over 450 total yards, with 45 rushing yards on 9 attempts. Hopefully, he can cut down on the picks and lead Lawrence to a state title. Go Lions!

            Stats:
            21/30 434 YDS 6/3 TD/INT
            9 RUSH 45 YDS 10 AVG

            RECRUITING NOTES

After the game, Howell was contacted by the University of Colorado-Boulder, who indicated some interest in him. We'll see if they offer a scholarship, of which Howell has not been offered any thus far.

Howell was bumped up on 247Sports and Rivals from unranked to 1-star.

I mean, considering his charisma is as high as it is, he could probably get away with a lot, in terms of stuff like that. Plus, that game was definitely a confidence booster, especially in terms of the defense stepping up big time. Thanks for checking in!

                  first half stats:

ANOTHER BLOWOUT FROM LAWRENCE DESPITE THREE HOWELL INTS

Brian Howell led the Lawrence Lions to a 48-7 over the Fort Scott Paladins, despite three interceptions by him. At halftime alone, Howell had 375 YDS with 3 TDS and only 1 pick, but had a 1/2 ratio in the second half. Hopefully, his decision-making can improve next week, for Lawrence's first road game. Go Lions.

                  Stats:
                  25/35 442 YDS 4 TDS 3 INTS
                  4 ATT 19 YDS 1 TD

                  RECRUITING NOTES
Two rivals may be competing for the same QB, as Colorado State followed up Colorado's call of interest last week with one this week. They have indicated strong interest to Howell, and may offer a scholarship as soon as next week, which would be his first.

Rivals and 247Sports have upgraded Howell from a 1-star to a 2-star prospect following this week.

Need to cut down on the picks in case there isn't a blowout in the team's future.

True, as usually as a QB in RTG I seem to throw a ton of picks. No idea why, either. Thanks for the reply!

LAWRENCE WINS ANOTHER BLOWOUT AS HOWELL HAS BEST GAME YET

Brian Howell had his best game on his "Return Tour," as several local news outlets have now dubbed it. He threw no picks until the third quarter, passed for 411 yards, had a completion percentage of over 70%, and threw 5 TDS. Lawrence played well on both offense and defense in the 49-3 victory over the Concordia Dogs, as evidenced most strongly by Geo Sarria having over 200 yards receiving and 2 TDS. Lawrence will stay on the road next week, as they play the Wichita Owls.

                        Stats:
                        24/34 411 YDS 5 TD 1 INT
                        9 ATT 33 YDS 3.6 AVG

                        RECRUITING NOTES
Howell was offered three scholarships this week, from the University of Kansas, University of Colorado, and Colorado State University. He is also receiving interest from the Houston Cougars, a team many expect to be a preseason Top-25 spot-holder come next year.

On 247Sports and Rivals, Howell was raised up from a 2-star to a 3-star recruit. He is currently the number two ranked quarterback out of Kansas for next season, and the number five overall prospect out of the state.

HOWELL HAS ANOTHER MASTERFUL PERFORMANCE AS LIONS WIN 38-10

Brian Howell's surprising mobility for a self-described "pocket passer" was on full display tonight, as he rushed for 86 yards on 13 attempts. However, Howell also put on a fireworks display through the air, with over 350 yards, 5 passing touchdowns, and one interception in the third quarter. Lawrence has rolled through this year so far due to his play, as well as the defense. They will return home to play the 3-1 Russel Rockets in a clash of two of the best teams in the district. Go Lions!

                              Stats:
                              24/34 379 YDS 5/1
                              13 ATT 86 YDS 6.6 AVG

                              RECRUITING NOTES

Howell stayed static on 247Sports and Rivals as a 3-star recruit. He was, however, offered three more scholarships this week, from the University of Nebraska, University of Missouri, and the University of Houston.

Another school is now targeting Howell, that being the Arizona State Sun Devils. They are expected to offer a scholarship as early as next week, as they have reportedly been "very impressed with Howell." Here is a full list of schools currently targeting Howell, in order of his interest:

Arizona State Sun Devils (4-star Prestige, PAC-12, Spread Playbook)
Colorado Buffaloes (3-star Prestige, PAC-12, Multiple Playbook)
Nebraska Cornhuskers (5-star Prestige, Big Ten, Multiple Playbook)
Missouri Tigers (4-star Prestige, SEC, Spread Playbook)

Houston Cougars (3-star Prestige, American, Air Raid Playbook)
Colorado State Rams (2-star Prestige, MWC, One Back Playbook)
