Background
2011 Kansas HS Football State Championship
Lawrence HS Lions vs Manhattan HS Indians
Brian Howell, junior, took the snap for the Lawrence Lions late in the fourth quarter, Lions down by 3. Play action to the halfback. Rolled out to the right. Went through his reads, when WHAM! Hit on the blindside by a 6'5" 260-pound Manhattan defensive end. Fumble by Howell, returned for a touchdown by Manhattan. Howell lay on the field at Welch Stadium in pain, grabbing his right thigh.
Manhattan won by 13 points, and, even worse, Howell broke his femur on the hit. He had gone down awkwardly after the hit, and would be out until the middle of May 2012.
Before this, Howell had been a very good junior, then a three-star recruit. With this injury, he had said he'd be dropping football, and was removed entirely from all recruiting databases. With him rejoining football in mid-June, he was reset on all recruiting databases nationally. He had to restart completely, and come back from adversity.
The question now, for the Lawrence Lions, is: Can Brian Howell recover from this injury and gain scholarships from prominent schools?
Can Lawrence make it back to the state championship game?
Stay tuned to find out.
