I wanted to take the USC gig when it opened up in my dynasty but I never got t offered to me - (Figured out after that when you hit a certain age, no more offers despite how good your record is).

I wanted somewhat of a challenge and WVU offered, so I took it and shut it down until this fall. I like the uniform combos, plus a conference I never coached in as well...and I'm old enough to remember Major Harris!!

West Virginia Knocks off Missouri to win Sugar Bowl
      Mountaineers dominant in 41-13 win

      New Orleans (AP) –

Two years ago, the Mercedes Benz Superdome in New Orleans saw one of the most thrilling BCS title games with West Virginia defeating Air Force 37-34 in overtime.

There would be no such drama in the 2041 Sugar Bowl as the Mountaineers easily handled the Missouri Tigers 41-13.

The Mountaineers led 17-6 at the half and 24-13 after three quarters before blowing the game wide open with 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.

“Losing to Texas in the last game of the season could have crushed our team. It cost us a Big 12 title game opportunity and perhaps another BCS title shot but our guys showed their resiliency and pride by playing a great ball game today,” said West Virginia head coach KC Duane.

QB James Sullivan (SR; Bethlehem, WV) capped off this college career by going 31 of 41 passing for 261 yards and two touchdowns with his favorite target being WR Travis Diggs (JR; Chaparral, MI) who caught eight passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns. RB Paul Horton (SR; Buckhannon, WV) also finished his career in style by rushing for 110 yards and two touchdowns.

“It was great to see two home grown products – two outstanding young men – finish that way. I’m happy for everyone but especially for Sully and Paul,” stated Duane, whose 25th and final season as a head coach will be highlighted in Operation Sports “A Season With” next year.

Also starring for the Mountaineers was all-everything linebacker Brendan Davis (SR; Ferndale, MI) who ended his career as the Sugar Bowl MVP with a 11 tackle performance that was highlighted by a sack, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. The two-time Nagurski winner, who also added the 2041 Bednarski and Linebacker of the Year awards, is projected to be a first round pick in the NFL draft.

Three Mountaineers selected in 2042 NFL Draft

        CHICAGO (AP) -

The West Virginia Mountainners had three players selected in the 2042 NFL Draft.

Linebacker Brandon Davis - a two time Nagurski winner - was selected in the first round by the Seattle Seahawks.

Running back Paul Horton, who rushed for over 1,000 yards last season while also hauling in 67 passes, was a third round selection of the Los Angeles Rams.

Wide receiever Travis Diggs, who shocked many by declaring as a junior, was drafted in the seventh round by the Mexico City Chargers. Diggs caught 81 passes as a freshman but saw his production drop off to 53 and 47 catches the last two seasons.

Mountaineers recruiting haul ranked NCAA's third best

          Morgantown (WV) –

The West Virginia Mountaineer football program officially welcomed 17 new recruits as the NCAA signing day passed.

Ranked the NCAA’s third best recruiting class behind only Michigan and Alabama, head coach KC Duane’s emphasis was on speed in the skill positions, highlighted by the nation’s #1 overall recruit, wide receiver David Smith, a diminutive speedster from Frankfort, Kentucky.

The 5’9” Smith may lack size but he makes up for it with 4.36 speed. He’s expected to see time as a returner and will see time on offence after the sudden departure of Travis Diggs, who declared as a junior and was drafted by the Mexico City Chargers in the seventh round of the NFL Draft.

Smith will be joined by fellow speedster Brandon Ball, who at 5’11” is slightly bigger but even faster at 4.32. “We hope these two can give is a game breaking element on offence that we really haven’t had since I got here,” said head coach KC Duane.

Duane and his staff also addressed concern in the secondary by adding highly touted corner Michael Deangelis. The Terrell, Texas product is expected to slot into a starting role in the secondary. Also expected to compete for a starting position on the defensive side of the ball is West Virginia’s own Pat Nelson. The Paden City native could possibly start at defensive tackle. Also expected to compete for a starting position is the nation’s #1 guard Kasey Robinson, a consensus USA Today All-American who hails from South Plainfield, New Jersey.

            2042 West Virginia Football Preview

            Morgantown (WV) –

West Virginia’s KC Duane enters only one thing in his 25th and final season as a head coach in the NCAA.

            One final National Championship.

“When we came here as a staff, the goal was to win a National Championship at the end of my five year contract. Well, we hit the jackpot in year two and came close in year three,” said Duane, referring to a 37-34 OT win against Air Force in 2039 and a subsequent 10-7 heartbreaking loss to Miami in 2040.

“We’ve accomplished that goal. Now we have another and that’s to get greedy,” laughed Duane, who also won four championships in a ten year stint at Penn State before arriving in Morgantown.

To do so, the Mountaineers will have to get through a tough schedule and be peaking for the late season matchups against Oklahoma and Texas.

There is also another factor that comes into play.

“We want to get Coach Duane to 300 career wins,” said quarterback Deron Barrett (SR; Fort Wright, KY. “And that means running the table,” added All-American Safety Yaheem James, noting that Smith enters the season with a 286-91 career record.

            OFFENCE

            QUARTERBACK
Deron Barrett (RS SR; Fort Wright, KY) is the man. Last year’s starter, Barrett suffered broken ribs in the Mountaineer’s fourth game and lost his job to James Sullivan. If Barrett goes down again, the Mountaineers could be in big trouble. Alfonso Morris (SO; Winter Springs, FL) guided the team to a 25-24 at TCU last year when Sullivan suffered a concussion but it would be a big ask for him to get the job done. Losing out on 5 Star recruit Tony Kirkpatrick, who chose Notre Dame at the end of the season, could come back to haunt the Mountaineers. He’s turned out to be real gem according to reports from Notre Dame. Meanwhile, the Mountaineers will have Travis Harrison (RS-FR; Hampton, VA) as the third stringer as he tries to get rid of the bust tag while Alphonso Morris cousin Andre (RS; Vandalia, OH) came into camp out of shape and nearly got cut.

            RUNNING BACK
Much like quarterback, the Mountaineers are thin in this department as Doug Smith (SR; Talmadge, OH) takes over for Paul Horton. Smith relies on his speed and it will be interesting to see if he gets a chance to use it with the offensive line being a question mark. Horton was more of a power back who could break tackles while Smith, although 6’1” and 227 pounds, is more of a finesse runner. After Smith, Deonne White (RS SO: Gallon, OH) could fill in as more of a power back. Manuel Logan (RS SO; Hawthorne, NJ) , a three star recruit in 2041, is set to show what he has. Eric Bowling (FR; Ewing, NJ) is also on the roster and wasn’t redshirted due to the lack of depth. He isn’t expected to be a factor.

            OFFENSIVE LINE
So many possibilities, so few real answers. Well, let’s start at center where Isaac Archer (SR; Chester, PA) is expected to anchor the line and has a very capable backup in Ryan Alexander (JR; Englewood, NJ). The tackles are inexperienced but set. Will Booth, the nation’s #1 recruit at tackle in 2041, will man the right tackle spot while the left tackle will be Erik Elbert, the #8 tackle in 2041. They will be backed up by CJ Phillips (RS JR a major disappointment since arriving on campus as a 4 star recruit as well as Matt Reed (JR; Villa Hills, KY).

The guard situation is intriguing. The Mountaineers return four players who started at various points last season. At left guard, Carlos Potts (RS SR; Willowbrook, CA) and Vinnie Strong (RS SR; Miamisburgh, OH) are set to compete for the starting job. At right guard, Justin Pope (RS SR; Dumont, NJ) and Ross Nance (RS SR; Streetsboro, OH) split time at the position last year. Now add into the mix the USA Today’s #1 guard in the 2042 class in Kasey Robinson (FR; South Plainfield, NJ) and another highly prized recruit in Marques Wright (FR; Lake Ridge, VA) and things become interesting. Both recruits already have the physical skills of the players they could replace yet lack experience. Lots of questions with a lot of potential answers.

Tight end will see Brent Marcus (RS SR; Springfield, PA) try to regain the form he had in 2040. Backing him up will be Nikko Jenkins (JR; Plainfield, NJ). Mike Everett (RS; Martinsville,IN) a 2042 recruit is expected to redshirt.

            DEFENCE

            DEFENSIVE LINE
This unit has to get better if the Mountaineers have any aspirations of a National Championship but the question remains will it?

Walter Marqhardt (SR; Hollins, VA) finally began to show some promise last season after two disappointing seasons as a starter at tackle and will be looked at to anchor the defensive line. After Marqhardt, it’s anyone’s guess who gets reps. Logan Peterson (RS SR; Sunset, FL) has flashed in the past but needs to be more consistent. James Small (RS JR; West Chester, PA) projects to be more a depth player. Two players who could emerge are Tyler Smith (RS SO; Warren, PA) who the coaches love but hasn’t shown anything in limited playing time and SPARQ Top 100 recruit Pat Nelson (FR; Paden City, WV), who will be given every opportunity to start and whose performance could make or break this unit. Keon Hughes (RS; SO; Bethel Park, PA), a former offensive tackle, was moved over in the spring to provide depth and size (6’5”; 334 pounds).

Ricky Waters (SR; Ross Township, PA), returns to start at one end while Fred Abrams (RS SR; Berkley, MI) finally gets an opportunity to start after playing well in spot duty. They will be backed up by Dan Coleman (RS SO; Northview, OH), Seth Johnson (So; Euclid, OH) and Alex Wright (RS SO; Euclid, OH) all of whom should get reps as backups. Desmond Webb (RS; Okmulgee, OK) is slated to redshirt.

            LINEBACKERS
Losing Nagurski and Bednarik winner Brandon Davis to the NFL is a crushing blow. There is talent with this unit but it lacks experience.

The middle will see undersized TJ Williams (JR; Wilmington Manor, DE), who at 5’9” isn’t your protype for the position, try to fend off the challenge of Stevie Matich (FR; Bergenfield, NJ). Also in the mix in the middle is Willie Rhodes (RS JR; Muskegon, MI) who is expected to be deployed in nickel and dime packages. Rico Wilson (RS FR: The Colony, TX) is not a factor.

On the outside, one spot will go to Demetrius Mack (SO; Painesville, OH) who likes to live up to his hometown’s name while another will see Nick Jacobs (SO; Daly, City, VA) probably be named the starter. An X factor in all of this is recruit Tyrone Roberson (FR; Wellsburg, WV) who at 6’3” 229 pounds can move. An all-round athlete in high school, he lacks experience at linebacker. JJ Moss (RS SO; Inkster, MI) and Matt Johnson (SR; Martinsburg, WV) will provide depth.

            SECONDARY
A unit that was considered a weakness last season will go into this year without Antwon Rust, the 2039 Thorpe winner.

Mike Burnett (SR; Delaware, OH) will do fine as the team’s shutdown corner. It’s the rest of the defensive backfield that is causing concern.

Prized recruit Michael Deangelis (FR; Terrell, TX) will start at the other corner. The nickelback is expected to be Andrew Barnes (RS SR; East Liverpool, OH) whose main claim to fame was being beat for the game winning touchdown in the 2040 BCS Championship game. After that Deedee Dunn (SO; Biddeford, ME), who saw some work last year could figure into the mix as well as Jay Stover (RS FR; Blacksburg, VA), and Brian Causey (RS FR; Panama City, FL). Elgin Williams (FR; Solon, OH) could work his way into the rotation as well.

All-American Yaheem James (JR; New Martinsville, WV) will be locked in at free safety while Ryan Andrews (JR; Leisure City, FL) gets to finally show off his athleticism as a starter.

            SPECIAL TEAMS
Yanny Reyna (SO; Hawthorne, NJ) returns and provides stability at the kicker position. He also came into punt last year after Kyle Schultz was lost for the season and did an admirable job although he will give way to punting duties to Dominic Tucker (RS FR; Okemos. MI).

Crazy to see Indiana in the Top 10. Do you have any other threads with Duane?

GAME NOTES: This will be the first meeting between the two schools since 1959. USC won that game 36-0. This will be WVU Head Coach KC Duane's homecoming of sorts. Duane grew up a Trojan fan in SoCal and aspired to one day be head coach of the Trojans but that never came to be. This will be the first time he coaches against USC at the Coliseum. Duane's Wake Forest teams played USC twice. In 2018, the Demon Deacons lost 54-0 at USC - the worst margin of defeat in Duane's illustrious career. Duane gained some revenge in what would be his final game at Wake Forest - a 28-13 win in the 2023 Orange Bowl.

Sorry - this is it. There is a lot of discussion re: Academy teams in the other forum. I threw all of them in the American Conference - Army and Navy kind of got neutralized but Air Force has become a major power. They've made 8 natties winning three of them. The crazy thing? They are not a 'hurry up' team - they have conservative settings and just beat you straight up.

West Virginia running back Doug Smith breaks through USC defenders on his way to a 38 yard run. The Mountaineers defeated the Trojans 33-21 in the season opener for both teams

COACH KC DUANE POST GAME QUOTES

                          On the game overall…

“We just opened it up in the second quarter. We made a concentrated effort to be more explosive on the offensive side of the ball. We’re looking at a 2nd and 18 at the end of the first quarter. Doug Smith rips off an 18 yard run. Play action to Nate Harvey for 42, and another play action to Chase (Sykes) for 27 yard touchdown pass. Great stuff.”

On QB DeRon Barrett, who finished 23 of 31 for 285 yards passing with a touchdown and added two more along the ground…

“He was on fire in the first half. What? 234 yards passing at half time. We kind of played a little bit more conservative in the second half with a 27-14 lead at the half, so I mean he could have had even bigger numbers.”

On HB Doug Smith’s 159 yards rushing on 23 carries...

“Wow. Did he show us something today. The guy got 20 or so carries a year, so this was our first real good look at him in a game. We always knew he had speed but today he ran with power and authority. That 38 yard run? He broke through 3 tacklers before he busted it open.”

                          On the defense…

“Honestly? I thought are tackling was sub-standard but we did a great job of getting hats around the ball. When you are swarming to the football that will cover up some blown tackles. Guys were getting off blocks and cleaning up.”

On Kasey Robinson starting at right guard…

“We went with Kasey because a) he was the best guard in his class and b) his athleticism plays. He’s big and he can move. For his first ever NCAA game in this environment? He was solid.”

On coaching at the Coliseum against the Trojans – a team he grew up as a fan of…

“It was weird in pre-game, just being on field level. Looking up to where our family had season tickets with some friends. Once the game started it was business as usual, but as we walked off with a win I couldn’t help but look back up those seats and think about the journey."

                                MEET A MOUNTAINEER…
                                QB DARON BARRETT
SR (RS); 6-4, 202 FORT WRIGHT, KY

Daron Barrett is the man this year with the West Virginia Mountaineers and he welcomes the spotlight.

The senior quarterback earned the starting job in training camp last season only to lose it when he suffered broken ribs in a week five when at Texas Tech. He tried to come back later in the year but the injury was too much to overcome – that and the fact that James Sullivan had firmly entrenched himself as the starter.

One of KC Duane’s first recruits at WVU, there was thought that Barrett could start as a freshman but Joe Price would take the job and run with it, going 27-1 in his last two seasons and taking the team to the BCS title game twice – winning it once.

Now, it’s Barrett’s time. The wait is over.

The Fort wright, Kentucky product spurned a career in baseball – he was a 11th round draft pick of the Detroit Tigers in the 2038 draft and chose to pursue a football career. A balanced quarterback who is just as comfortable running the ball as passing it, Barrett’s considerable skills will finally be given an opportunity to shine.
