LSU running back Aaron Thomas scores early in the third quarter on a fourth and goal from the one yard line. The Tigers would go ahead 17-3 and never look back, cruising to a 31-13 win in Morgantown.

LSU wins battle on line of scrimmage with eight sacks

COACH KC DUANE POST GAME QUOTES

        On the game overall…

“Defence bends but doesn’t break in the first quarter. We get three turnovers and can’t put any points on the board because they crushed us on the line of scrimmage but give them credit. There’s a reason why their tackle is an All-American – David Wilson is a great player who showed it today with three sacks. We gave up eight sacks. Simply put, we weren’t good enough.”

On the offence finally getting a major late in the fourth quarter with the backups in the game…

“We should have put Alfredo Morris and the rest of that group in earlier.”

On HB Doug Smith’s being limited to 53 yards on 14 carries...

“We come up with a game plan and we try to adhere to it. I trust our OC (Kory Powell) and we run the plays that we’ve worked on all week. For whatever reason, Smitty’s number didn’t come up too often today.”

        On the defense…

“Like I said, three turnovers in the first quarter. We had momentum and then they took it away from us by getting to DeRon on a regular basis. I liked what I saw from Stevie Matich at linebacker at times. I think he had two sacks and Ryan Andrews had 10 tackles, which is not what you want to see from your strong safety. It means that they’re getting to the next level and beyond.”

On the two interceptions each by free safety Yaheem James and cornerback Michael DeAngelis…

“That was one of the few bright spots today. You expect that caliber of play from Yaheem seeing how he’s an All-American but when you see that from a true freshman like Michael it tells you how bright his future is.”

On the fact that the loss will deny him 300 wins at the end of his career this season…

“It would have been nice because it means we would have won the championship. Here’s a newsflash for you. We can still accomplish that goal at 13-1. Our margin of error has been eliminated. I’ve always found that you can still rebound from a loss early in the season and be in the hunt at the end. It’s a lot tougher the other way around.”

              MEET A MOUNTAINEER…
              K YANNY REYNA
              SO; 6-1, 225 HAWTHORNE, NJ

The only football Yanny Reyna knew growing up in his native Uruguay was the so-called ‘beautiful game’. The particulars of American football were something Reyna knew nothing of.

But at the age of 11, Reyna’s family moved to New Jersey (his father Diego is a diplomat who was assigned to the United Nations office), opening the door for his opportunity in what he and his family always referred to as ‘Gridiron’.

Reyna played soccer throughout his youth, but one day on a whim, he was playing with a friend who was a sophomore kicker on his high school varsity team. With his powerful leg, Reyna made kicking look easy. That friend who was the sophomore? He became Reyna’s backup the next season.

An All-State performer at Hawthorne High School, Reyna received several scholarship opportunities but chose West Virginia because head coach KC Duane allowed him to play for the Mountaineer’s soccer team.

All Reyna did as a true freshman was provide walk-off game winning field goals against Virginia Tech and Texas Christian while going 17 for 22 on the season. He also doubled as the punter after Kyle Schultz got hurt and proved to a capable placement punter.

Wake Forest comes in to the game on a roll, having defeated Arizona 45-0 last Saturday, while the Mountaineers were drilled at home by a 31-13 margin by LSU. Wake Forest visits West Virginia for the first time since 2021, when KC Duane led the Demon Deacons to a thrilling 34-32 victory in Morgantown. Duane spent eight seasons at Wake Forest, finishing with a record of 59-45, finishing with a 10-4 team in 2023 that won the Orange Bowl 28-13 versus USC.

Demon Deacons halfback Gavin Williams gets the edge on the Mountaineers. Williams would rush for 244 yards and a touchdown in a 45-7 Wake Forest win.

Wake Forest comes into Morgantown and rolls to 45-7 win

COACH KC DUANE POST GAME QUOTES

                  On the game overall…

“10-7 game at the half for them. Then they outscore us 35-0 in the second half. We just didn’t show up in the second half. They just took the ball and shoved it down our throats. I can say that when they rush for 353 yards.”

On Wake Forest halfback Gavin Williams 244 yard rushing performance…

“He’s a good player but we made him look like a great player. We were his personal highlight reel today. Crazy thing is we know we’re light on defence and our personnel in our front seven is basically run-first types. Didn’t make a difference today.”

                  On the offence’s problems...

“We usually pass to set up the run and it works for us. Today, when we did move the ball in the first half, we couldn’t convert on second and short or third and short. Don’t ask about the second half. We looked like a JV team because we couldn’t throw it at that point either.”

                  On the defense…

“Look, we are young. We know that, but we still have to get better results than this. I’d like to know what happened to the team that beat USC because this hasn’t been the same team the last two weeks.”

On another strong performance from safeties Yaheem James and Ryan Andrews…

“People will look at eight tackles each and rave about a great game. When your safeties combine for 16 tackles, that’s not a good thing. We are getting mauled up front but then it probably would be worse without Yaheem and Ryan.”

On the injury to kicker Yanny Reyna…

“Give Yanny credit. He went down making a tackle. I’ll know more when I talk to the medical staff here in a few minutes but it doesn’t look good.”

On the outlook for the rest of the season…

“Our goal is the National Championship. That’s not looking to good right now but we still have a Big 12 Conference Championship that we can win. That being said, we have a lot of things to clean up and clean up quickly.”

                        Duane to resign?
Mountaineers head man in last season of contract

                        Morgantown (AP) -

Rumors continue to circulate that West Virginia head coach KC Duane could resign if his team loses against Colorado this Saturday.

Duane was lured back for the final year of his contract with two big motivating factors - a National Championship and a shot at 300 wins.

With a 1-2 start those goals are no longer within reach although a Big 12 title still is. However, another disappointing home loss to a conferece foe like Colorado could see Duane walk away.

"He realizes that perhaps the team might need new direction with a 1-3 record. The university might want to transition to (DC) Todd (Grantham) sooner rather than later. It would be a sad way to end a great career though," stated an anonymous WVU source.

Yaheem James grew up watching West Virginia football and why not, it runs in the family.

As a young man, he would watch old VHS tapes of his father Andrew during his time at WVU. Andrew was a walk-on linebacker who by his senior season was named a special teams captain who had earned a scholarship.

Andrew’s mom – Linda – is the daughter of WVU legend Major Harris – who prior to the recent string of success by the Mountaineers, was the only quarterback to guide the Mountaineers to a National title shot way back in 1988 against Notre Dame.

A complete athlete, James has a reputation as being one of the hardest hitting safeties in the NCAA. That was recognized last year when James was named a 1st team All-American for his efforts.

Only in his junior season, James is expected to be a 2nd round pick in the 2044 NFL Draft. Others believe he could even declare for next year’s draft.

The Buffaloes lost 35-21 at North Carolina State to drop to 0-2. The Mountaineers got drilled 45-7 by Wake Forest at home. The loss was the worst that head coach KC Duane has suffered since a 63-7 thrashing by Rutgers versus Penn State way back in 2024. The Buffaloes beat the Mountaineers 27-17 in Boulder last year. They also beat WVU 28-23 in Morgantown in 2038. Duane is 0-2 lifetime versus UC.

Things could get ugly if they lose to Colorado. Duane is a proud guy - any negative comments from the administration or alumni could cause him just to say screw it and walk away. He’s done it all - even bringing a NATTY to WVU for the first time. If he isn’t shown the respect he deserves, it could be over.

COACH KC DUANE POST GAME QUOTES

                                On the game overall…

“The first quarter looked more like the same from the last two weeks offensively but the scoop and score for 67 yards by Seth Johnson took some pressure off us offensively. Once we found our bearings in the second, it was look old times.”

                                On the turning point…

“We’re leading 7-3 and they’re marching early in the second. DeAngelis gets the pick and we wind up scoring on that drive to make it 14-3. Tell you what, DeAngelis is a player. Four interceptions in four games as a freshman is very impressive. He’s a special player.”

                                On the lineup changes...

“Look we like Stevie Matich at linebacker but we decided to go with more experience in Willie Rhodes. And Seth Johnson going in for Fred Abrams paid off big time with Seth’s TD. On offence, Justin Pope went in at right guard and we slid Carlos over to right tackle where he played as a freshman. Erik Elbert is going to be fine but at this stage we need to do what gives us the best chance of winning.”

                                On Doug Smith’s game…

“19 carries for 114 yards. More of what we saw from him against ‘SC. We he runs hard, with his speed, he’s a beast. When he doesn’t, he’s not a factor. That simple.”

On DaRon Barrett hitting 10 different receivers…

“That’s when you know a quarterback isn’t zoning in one guy but rather going through his progression. Solid game today by DaRon – it helped that he was only sacked once. Give him time and he’ll be fine.”

On rumors that he would resign should the Mountaineers lost today…

“Listen, I finish what I start. If you think a 1-3 start would see me quit, you reallt don’t know me too well. If they wanted to fire me, well that’s a different matter."
