    Re: #SWARM - The Reboot

    Early Training Camp Headlines

    Position battles galore

A lot of guys went hard this offseason, and there's a ton of competition for playing time on this team. Let's take a look at some of the position battles to keep an eye on.

HB1: Tristan Cox vs Trent Brantley. A 5'11, 215 pound do-it-all back who models his game after Le'Veon Bell, Cox was electric last year, averaging 6 yards a carry and leading the team in catches with 56, even though he played in just 10 games. He was a huge part of the Swarm winning their bowl game, scoring twice and averaging 8 yards a rush. He had a good offseason, and comes in looking to be the clear-cut #1 after being more of a rotational guy last year. Trent Brantley didn't have a great offseason. He didn't really address his weaknesses, and he looked lost at times, like he hadn't studied any film or even gone over the playbook all offseason. He's a physical back at 5'9, 227 and he brings a good blend of speed and power, but all he's good at doing is getting yards and falling forward. He doesn't block or catch the ball the way Cox can.

HB3: There's more competition at tailback. JUCO backs Tyndall Thomas and Martin Hicks, who walked on, will compete for the 3rd spot. Thomas has the edge, as he's a 5'8, 240 pound bruiser who brings a whole different style of running. Hicks is more of a one cut guy who's style is similar to Cox, but he's not the same caliber of athlete.

WR1/2: This is wide open. It really is. Calvin Foster enters as the presumed top target, but he hasn't been that great. Daniel Thompson was supposed to be a lot better than what he was last year, and ended up falling all the way to #4 on the depth chart by the end of the season. He had a good showing in the bowl game, but that was less him and more DBs playing the ball badly. Tony Brown had more yards and scores on less catches, and only had one drop to Thompson's 7 in 2015. Senior Mario Lane is a dark horse, he's looked solid after missing 2015 with a broken leg.

Tony Brown rises for a catch.

RG: Adam Van tore his ACL about a year ago, and it may have been a blessing in disguise. The 6'6 guard couldn't do anything for a while and actually lost a lot of weight, going down from 343 to as low as 276. He lost a lot of muscle mass too, but he gained that back when he was cleared to start rehabbing. He did a lot of conditioning and is in much better shape, and weighed in at 324. Him and fellow redshirt freshman James Henderson will battle for the job. Henderson is also 6'6, and also trimmed his weight, going from 336 last year to 322 now.

SS: Khari Anderson moved to SS last year and had a great year. Unfortunately, he had a mediocre offseason, and looks like he's about the same player he was last year. Ray Bentley, on the other hand, was motivated by sitting on the bench last year and looks like he could challenge for the spot. Bentley hits harder, but Anderson has experience and is better in coverage.

Sean Louis unhappy, butting heads with DC Freeman

Sean Louis jumps a pass. Westlake State doesn't have another corner as good as he is.

Sean Louis has NFL hopes. Easy to see why he does; he's 6'2, 200 pounds and runs a sub-4.3 40. He's one of the better man to man corners in the nation, really. He can even play offense, and was instrumental in a key win over Buffalo, and the bowl win over Iowa. But, he doesn't really play in system very well and is seemingly a very selfish guy who doesn't really mesh with the team outside of a few guys. Louis also has a history of getting into it with coaches, leaving LSU and Nicholls State for that very reason.

He hasn't seemed to learn, as he's been tweeting passive aggressively all summer about Swarm recruits (His thoughts on the recruiting class, verbatim: "lol none of these guys even comparing to me, get us some blue chips") and has already gotten into it with defensive coordinator Mike Freeman after Louis berated his teammates on the first day of camp, calling DB Terrance Owens a "sorry a-- wannabe", and the 2 came to blows. After Freeman separated them, Louis didn't take kindly to whatever Freeman said, and audibly told him to "f--k off" before storming off the field. He would later come back to apologize and ran sprints as punishment, but you gotta wonder if his attitude will wear on the morale of this defensive unit.

    Disgruntled McKinley likely to transfer

Jacourey McKinley was supposed to be the "savior" at Westlake State, the man who would bring this young program to relevancy. His junior year tape went viral among MAC coaches, as the then 5'9 signal-caller danced around like Russell Wilson and sprayed passes around the field. A bitter recruiting battle saw him pick the Swarm over Kent State after he watched us beat the Golden Flashes 28-26 in 2014. Then De'Aaron Walker was discovered, won the starting job and now looks like he'll be the guy to make us relevant. On top of that, McKinley came in under his listed weight, and looked like the FBS game was too fast and physical for him. He bulked up to a still-slender 189 and improved his arm, but early on it looks like he still can't compare to Walker.

McKinley is reportedly upset about his playing time, and was spotted commenting on several of Kent State's Instagram photos. A transfer seems like a strong possibility, as McKinley would likely start as a senior in 2018.

Swarm announce non-conference games for 2016 and beyond

Westlake State will renew their agreement with Boise State, as they will continue to play each other through 2019, alternating venues each year. In addition, the Swarm have signed home and home agreements with Marshall and Middle Tennessee State. They visit the Blue Raiders this year and host Marshall.

Westlake State has also signed a deal with several Big 10 schools that will see them receive anywhere from 500 to 750 thousand dollars to play a road game against a more powerful school. The deal extends through 2020, and the conference will no doubt evaluate the Swarm as a potential future member.

      Future non-conference games (confirmed)

2016: at Boise, vs Marshall, at MTSU, at #18 Michigan State

2017: at Marshall, vs Boise, vs MTSU

      2018: at Boise

      2019: vs Boise

Had a long weekend away with family so I just caught up. Great win over Iowa!! Talk about the magic of those black shirts man, congrats! Walker had a great game.

Some talent lost, but I definitely have high hopes for this upcoming year. I can see a MAC title in the near future!

Thanks man! Was an awesome game, those black jerseys definitely got something special. Walker was great, made huge plays. Definitely a good squad this year, I'm actually about to do the roster breakdown now, we had some guys have really good offseasons, others not so much.

            Roster

Keep in mind that these overalls are knocked down by anywhere from 1-4 points, and OL/DL/LB all lost 3-4 points due to injury edits.

De'Aaron Walker is a lot better than he was as a freshman. He's become more polished; making better reads and throwing more accurately while also getting a bit more athletic. But if he gets hurt again, this offense will fall off a cliff. Jacourey McKinley is a great runner, but he's way too quick to take off and has mediocre arm. Dwight Cummings is just not a very good QB.

This is a good group. Tristan Cox is a dynamic runner who probably has the best hands on the team. If he can manage to play the whole year, expect around 1500 all-purpose yards. Trent Brantley is also a very good back, even though he didn't get that much better. Behind them, Tyndall Thomas will come in and provide some serious power, while Martin Hicks could see snaps too, depending on how camp goes. Darren Smith is expendable and will likely only see reps on special teams.

Nate Branch is decent enough when he's needed.

Daniel Thompson has lost his starting spot to Tony Brown. He wasn't good last year, and hasn't shown anything so far. Calvin Foster will be the #1, while converted QB Ricardo Marble has been the best slot receiver so far. Don't forget tailback Tristan Cox is going to be split out wide quite a lot, and that'll likely take senior Mario Lane out of the equation here. Alex Kirkpatrick is a good player who should see a lot of snaps next season.

Blake Bentley came in at 218 last year, and I guess he took bulking up too far? The sophomore now weighs 244 pounds and looks like a worse player than he was last season. Steve Weiss and T.J. Thomas aren't very good either.

This is a far better unit than last year's. Ahmed Heath could very well sneak into the NFL draft with a great 2 years in Westlake, and fellow JUCO transfer Brandon Galloway is a very good guard. Them, along with returning starters Chris Beech and Joe Edwards, form what is a pretty damn good line. Right guard is the only uncertain spot here, with redshirt freshmen Adam Van and James Henderson competing for the job.

Clayton Thorson was named a freshman All-American after a 9 sack, 19 TFL season in 2015. (Yes, I forgot to include that in the season recap) But he wasn't that good. Off the top of my head, 5 or 6 of those came in the last few games, against fairly weak lines, and most were just coverage sacks on deep balls. Still, he's a promising edge rusher. Right end should be held down by freshman Mason Richardson, an OLB recruit who just wasn't fast enough to play linebacker. Backing him up will be fellow freshman Kevin Mitchell, an underdeveloped yet promising speed rusher. D-Tackle is pretty weak once the starters sit, as we haven't done a good job building depth there. We actually had to convert freshman Brian Hall from an end to a tackle.

Note: Anyone who has an incredible memory/eye for detail, note that I changed Mitchell's height/weight for a couple reasons. Firstly, he was 6'0, 239, and the heads for that build are comically small, and have skinny necks. The heads look like they should be on a guy who weighs like 160, not 240. Secondly, his attributes didn't make any sense. I didn't make him a great player, just gave him a more fitting build.

Malik Price is a freak. Period. Strong, fast, can cover like a corner but hits hard enough to play linebacker. Here's why he's not at a P5: He barely, and I mean barely qualified academically. He may not be here next year due to grades. On top of that, he's not very fundamentally sound, he misses a lot of tackles, and he doesn't read plays, just jumps at everything. He could be a colossal bust, or a defensive cornerstone for the next 4 years. I think the reality will be somewhere in between, and I'm banking on him missing at least one season due to grades.

Fellow freshman Jason Bowser is also a great talent. But Bowser isn't big enough, or ready mentally to play linebacker yet, and may actually have to play strong safety next season.

Tyreke Brewer and Manuel Kirk both return and looks like very solid players. Kirk's speed allows him to be incredibly disruptive, and Brewer is a big, fast, coverage linebacker.

Sean Louis might sneak into the NFL draft. He's a good enough athlete for the league, and good enough in man, but his zone, press, and tackling leave something to be desired by NFL standards. He also has red flags where attitude is concerned. Darnell Woods is a solid #2 corner, and Abdul Coles and Terrance Owens are good depth guys. Reggie Tate had an excellent offseason and will likely step into that slot corner role next season. Freshman Paris Robinson has potential.

At safety, Isaac Robinson looks like a future pro. He's a decent athlete who reads the game as well as anyone and is a solid tackler. Khari Anderson should be good again, though he didn't improve too much. Ray Bentley could see snaps.

Grant Marquardt is gone (Thank God) but Justin Ward may not be much better. Walk-on punter Brian McClain is a huge downgrade and the Swarm will likely recruit a punter this year.

            2016 Schedule

A tough non-conference slate sees the Swarm take on good teams in Boise State, Marshall, and Mid Tenn State before facing off against preseason #18 Michigan State in Lansing. MAC play once again opens in Mt. Pleasant against the Central Michigan Chippewas (Bullet, please don't kill my team lol), before the Swarm play a fairly similar set of teams as last year.

So I tried to reset the conference scheduling by removing everyone and putting them back in, and I found you can manipulate it a bit, but it's not great, as evidenced as me playing CMU on the road in week 6 again. Oh well.

              August 22nd, 2016

Come on! Louis suspended 4 games after selling team merchandise

WR Kirkpatrick, CB Owens the only training camp injury victims this year

Westlake, OH -- Westlake State have a pretty tough non conference schedule this year. And with star corner Sean Louis being suspended for 4 games by the NCAA, it just got a lot harder.

Louis was found to have sold Westlake State and LSU gear, along with merchandise he received at last season's Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl. He also received a multitude of free services around the Westlake area, with the NCAA finding he was essentially given blank checks at multiple local restaurants, and was given free cleats at a local SportChek.

Louis had the following to say:

              Kirkpatrick, Owens injured

Well, the injury bug always claims a few victims this time of year. This year, WR Alex Kirkpatrick will miss at least 3 months of his redshirt freshman campaign after he dislocated his shoulder, fracturing the head of the humerus and tearing ligaments in the process. Dime corner Terrance Owens broke his hand, and will be able to return for Week 2 at Middle Tennessee State. Reggie Tate is the likely dime corner for week 1.

                MAC Projections

Note: I'll start tracking the Heisman weekly after Week 4, no sense in doing it earlier as so many will be in and out. And yes, I did screw up accidentally swapping Buffalo and Ball State when I put everyone back in the conference. I'm going to re-align the conference into "Ohio" and "Midwest" divisions for next season anyway, just to spice it up, I've played so many MAC games in the 4 years I've been playing this game that I'm sick of the conference lol. With this done, all I have to do is the CAC preview, then I can get to previewing the Boise game, and hopefully I can play that tomorrow, have the recap up Thursday. Season 4 is gonna be lit!

Wow, I certainly had a lot to catch up on!

First off, I absolutely love the black alternates.

Second, I could not agree more about certain players just having that “it” factor. There’s always that one guy that feels like a cheat code.

Third, that’s unfortunate about McKinley but at the end of the day..you have to use the QB that gives you the best chance to win. Also, very interested to see how the suspension plays out! I know first hand how suspensions can affect a dynasty. Hopefully there’s nothing larger there and it was just one player.

                  Keep up the MACtion!

Glad to see you following Sheen! I'm glad you've picked the Penn A&T dynasty back up, always a good read. Black alternates go so hard and we always seem to play well in them, 3-0 so far including the bowl obviously. It does suck about McKinley, I recruited him thinking we had found our guy and then we find Walker, who was a low 3 star, absolute gem. Then McKinley turns out to not be so great after all, and is probably gonna transfer. So if Walker gets hurt again, we're screwed. Run game is nice and all, but not that nice and our defense is iffy. As for Louis, I'm not looking forward to playing our toughest games without him, he's a gamebreaker with that speed, and he shuts guys down for the most part.

                          Y4, G1 Preview

Last Meeting: Last season, Boise State dominated the final 3 quarters after going down 14-0 to take the game 27-20, and a late De'Aaron Walker INT sealed it for the Broncos. Pat Tyler gashed the Swarm for 140 rushing yards on just 21 carries, and Eddie Jackson threw for 288 yards and a big score.

Last Meeting at Venue: In 2014, Westlake State took a tense defensive battle by a final score of 3-0, as the Swarm rode a dominant defensive performance to end up winning on a last-second field goal.

Grant Marquardt scores the game's only points

                          Coach Barkley's Take

I will get a better pic of him lol

Boise State are a team who we've had great battles with in each of the last 2 seasons. QB Eddie Jackson is gone, but Chase Cord is a solid replacement. Junior tailback Pat Tyler gave us fits last year, and if Orlando uses him properly in this spread offense, we could be in for a long day.

Their defense has weak points for sure. We'll want to run at their LE Brandon Johnson; he's slow and just not very good. We won't get much on their starting corners, but Brandon Smith at FS will be targeted if he's left on an island deep.

This tram is more talented than us, but it's their first game under a new coach, and they have a new starter. Cohesion and chemistry could tip the scales in our favor.

That matchup preview looks a bit familiar lol, I dig it.

It should be a good game, hopefully they don't return the favor and take you down on your home turf. They're good, but Westlake is much improved. You guys have a lot of speed, which rules everything in this game! Best of luck!

On another note, hot diggity dawg I have one hell of a QB at Central Michigan! lol

EDIT: My bad, I thought this was at home for you for some reason. I can't read I guess lol

Hey man, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery lol. I didn't wanna try to reinvent the wheel, only so many ways you can preview a game.

It should be close. Our team overall would be a few points higher if it weren't for injury edits, so it's closer than it looks here. Losing Sean Louis is gonna be tough with their WR depth, but we still have some good corners. We are a very very fast team, I figured if I'm recruiting 2 and 3 star players, I'm recruiting the fast ones. We have a lot of sloppy plays, drops etc. but we have a lot of huge plays. Won us a bowl last year, so until we can pull in 4-5 star guys year after year this is what we're doing.

Your guy Ray Williams is ridiculous. I am not looking forward to facing him in Week 6. He looks like a first round lock, he's like 6'5, 220 with a big arm and good accuracy.

Thanks for the well wishes, gonna kick off the game in a bit!

Hey bud, your presentation has come a long way since the first go-round with the swarm. Gonna start following now, as I've missed out on a lot, but first game of year four seems like a great place to start.
