Rutgers Keeps It Rolling With 28-18 Win Over Cincinnati
Week 10
October 27, 2012
Cincinatti, Ohio
Make it 5 straight win for the Scarlet Knights after a lackluster 1-2 start to the 2012 season. Rutgers improved to 4-0 in road games this year as well, as they appear to not be fazed by the crowd in high risk situations, a great trait to have. It was a rather slow paced game with both teams not being 100 percent sharp on both offense and defense. In fact the second half scoreboard looks like it came from a baseball game, despite the lackluster game RU came out on top 28-18.
Quarterbacks
Chas Dodd didn't have his best showing today vs Cincinnati but that was OK, as neither team really brought their A game. Dodd only completed 45% of his passes, rather dreadful considering he threw the ball 44 times in the win. His one game streak without an interception also came to an end, as he found a Cincy defender early in the 2nd quarter. His lone TD score of the day came to Brandon Coleman on a beautiful 30 yard catch and pass in the 2nd quarter, putting Rutgers up 23-10 before the half.
For Cincinatti, redshirt senior Brendon Kay continues to struggle in his first and last season as a starter. Kay would throw a TD and 2 interceptions in the loss, giving him more INT's then TD's on the entire season thus far. Kay was more efficient than Dodd in the loss, but his two interceptions were turned into points by the RU offense, shooting the Bearcats in the foot.
Running Backs
Cincinnati did a great job of containing All-American back Jawan Jamison. The junior did find the end zone in the first quarter helping RU build a 10-0 lead early in the game. Jamison would finish with 82 yards on 21 carries. Jamison also brought in 3 catches for 25 yards.
Senior DeAntwan Williams who is a team favorite, finished with 22 yards on 6 carries, as they continue to get the senior a few touches in his final season.
The Bearcats run offense was stifled all game by the RU front seven. Senior George Winn averaged just 1.7 yards a carry on his 20 touches. He got Cincy on the board in the first quarter with a short score making it 10-7. Winn was the only Bearcat rusher to average positive yards as three other players were in the negatives. (Kay -7, Fearing -2, McClung -8)
Wide Receivers
Mohamed Sanu again led the way for the Scarlet Knights as he caught 6 passes for 74 yards. His 3 game TD streak also came to an end. Brandon Coleman brought in the only TD pass for the Scarlet Knights on an excellent 30 yard throw from Chas Dodd into the corner of the end zone.
Again Dodd spread the ball around finding 8 different receivers in the win. Rick Ross loves when they can spread the offense out like that and get everyone involved.
The Bearcats were led by stud receiver Kenbrell Thompkins who has been a problem for much of the Big East. Thopmkins would catch 6 balls for 60 yards in the loss. Sophomore Chris Moore brought in the only receiving score in the 4th quarter, king it 28-18 in the final seconds.
Defense/Special Teams
Freshman K Robby Harrell had his best game kicking the ball so far, as he was 4/5, his only miss coming from 50 yards out. Harrell would finish with 14 points on the day, huge for the Scarlet Knights in the victory.
Rutgers D was also able to force a safety in the 3rd quarter. Duron Harmon made the initial stop followed up by a gang of would be tacklers.
The RU linebackers were outstanding today in both the ground game and passing game. Marvin Booker and Steve Beauharnais each came away with interceptions in the win.
Up Next
Rutgers will enjoy an off week before they hit the road again and head to South Florida. They will be taking on the USF Bulls who are having a solid season thus far with a record of 5-2, 1-0 in the Big East. A BYE week for Rutgers while USF will face Cincinnati so their record will have changed.
