Re: Niagara Rhinos: An Alternate Universe NCAA 14 Dynasty

Dr. Schreibman was a placekicker for Niagara for three seasons starting in 1990. He was the Rhinos all time leading scorer for over almost 30 years and has been widely recognized across southern Ontario as a Niagara Rhino superfan. His views do not necessarily express those of Niagara University.

    OFFSEASON POTPOURRI!

    BEST OF LUCK, FORMER COORDINATORS
As I mentioned at the end of the 2019 season, I wasn't convinced that Niagara had even hired an offensive coordinator to replace Stevie Browning. That was only partially a joke, as Coach Nonek blows through OC's like they are made of Kleenex. This year is no different, as 1-year offensive coordinator James Lindsey is leaving Niagara for the head coaching job at Arizona State. As an interesting side note, Lindsey replaces another former Niagara coordinator. DeSean Waters spent two seasons as the Rhinos DC before taking the ASU job five seasons ago. He left the Sun Devils to take over a struggling Auburn program.

The other coordinator jumping ship is DC Jarred Jack. He actually hung around for a few seasons before opportunity came knocking. He'll leave Niagara to take over at Texas A&M. The Aggies are coming off three straight losing seasons and haven't won a bowl game since 2016.

I could waste a bunch of time introducing the new coordinators, but who cares? They'll be gone in season or two anyways.

(NUNYER NOTE: Weird coincidence in the coaching changes... As described above, my OC went to ASU to become HC. The fired ASU HC is now my OC. My DC went to TAMU to become HC. The fired TAMU HC is now my DC. I'm wondering if this is a bug? We just traded coaches. Maybe this is how it always works... I tend to not pay terribly close attention to the coordinators, so maybe it's something I just never noticed)

MORE DEFECTIONS: TWO RHINOS DECLARE EARLY, ONE TRANSFERS
With a smaller incoming recruiting class and 17 seniors graduating, the last thing the Rhinos needed were more defections. Unfortunately, the losses continue to mount as two underclassmen decided to declare early for the NFL draft and one player has announced his intention to transfer.

Canadian native and redshirt junior right tackle Paul Cleveland has decided to forgo his final year of eligibility and declare. A two year starter at right tackle, Cleveland is considered by most observers to go somewhere in the 5th or 6th rounds.

Another redshirt junior and Canadian recruit, wide receiver Ike Petoskey has also declared. This one is considered a bit of a reach by most draft pundits. While Petoskey has seen significant playing time the last three seasons, he's never been a starter. While he did lead the Rhinos in receptions this season, he did so out of the slot. Ike does possess a great set of hands, but his size (5'11) and lack of speed (81 SPD / 82 ACC) would make him a long shot at the next level. Most observers consider him a 7th round pick at best.

On the transfer front, reserve sophomore offensive lineman Anthony Randall has decided to transfer to Toledo. During his announcement, Randall stated that playing time and a desire to be closer to home were the primary reasons for leaving the Niagara program. While Randall was expected to compete for the starting center job in 2021, he had not seen the field in his first two seasons. Also, Toledo is only about an hour drive from his home in the Detroit suburbs. With his departure, the Rhinos will lose six offensive lineman from 2020, including four of the five starters.

    .........
NUNYER'S NOTE: Instead of doing a double-post, I'm just going to roll right to the NFL Draft results in this post... so imagine if you will that a month or whatever has gone by....
    .........

FOUR RHINOS TAKEN IN NFL DRAFT

Not the greatest NFL class for the Rhinos, but the National Champions did manage to get two players drafted in the 1st round and four overall.

WR | Fawad Fawaz | 94 OVR - 1st rd/17th overall - San Diego Chargers of Los Angeles
Despite playing for some run-heavy Rhino squads, the NFL still loved his combination of speed, technique and reliable hands. Fawaz was the 3rd of 4 wide recievers taken in the 1st round. He is expected to immediately start as the slot / WR3 and could compete for the WR2 spot.

    LT | Freddie Smith | 93 OVR - 1st rd/19th overall - Philadelphia Eagles
In a draft that is considered weak for offensive lineman, Smith ended up as the 2nd lineman taken this year. Most pundits praise his overall athleticism but consider him slightly undersized at 280 lbs. He is expected to compete for the starting left tackle job for the Eagles.

    RT | Paul Cleveland | 89 OVR - 6th rd/181st overall - NY Jets
Always good to see a Canadian recruit make it to the NFL! Cleveland started for three years and is considered a good fit for the run-heavy attack currently favored by the Jets. He is projected to make the roster as a backup.

    WR | Ike Petoskey | 89 OVR - 7th rd/223rd overall - New England Patriots
Just barely missing out on another Niagara Mr. Irrelevant, Petoskey was scooped up by New England with the 2nd-to-last pick in the draft. When reached for comment, HC Bill Belichick stated "With the recent retirements of Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola, we really needed to find a sub-6ft white receiver". Petoskey runs precise routes and has vice-grip hands, and Belichick loves those types of receivers, so he has a shot to contribute. That said, realistically he'll have to earn his nut on special teams in the near term.

FIVE UN-DRAFTED RHINOS SIGN UFA CONTRACTS

HB | Brock Apisa | Green Bay Packers
RG | John Hodgsen | Pittsburgh Steelers
DT | Blaine Rothenhauser | Kansas City Chiefs
DT | Ali Ramadan | Detroit Lions
    P | Robbie Finkbeiner | Denver Broncos

Of those five players, most observers give Apisa and Finkbeiner the best chances to not only make the roster, but immediately contribute. The Packers coaching staff loves backs who can switch between catching the ball out of the backfield and staying home to protect the QB, Apisa is solid in both areas. The Broncos punting situation was ugly last year, so Robbie will get a good opportunity in camp.

    PITT PANTHERS NFL UPDATE

Stevie Browning only had a single player drafted this year. Cornerback Marcus Holland (90 OVR) went to the Houston Oilers with the 3rd pick of the 5th round. He is expected to get immediate action as a nickel back.

Also worthy of note, record breaking Panther QB Jeremy Palmer went undrafted. Most around the league felt his huge senior season might have been a bit of a fluke. His hometown Pittsburgh Steelers took a chance on the young man and signed him to a contract. Per reports coming from the Steelers front office, the team is high on Palmer and he has a very good shot to make the team as a QB2.

When it comes to OC's and DC's I almost feel like you need to make them human controlled as well in order to keep them for more then 1 or 2 years if your team has any kind of success. Then you can always allow them to leave down the road if you want to build that into your storyline and just turn them back into CPU controlled guy's and create new OC's and DC's as level 1 to take over or allow yourself to hire guy's fired from other programs. It's my plan moving forward cause like you I sorta get tired of the revolving door.

I do like that my created OC Leon Pitts who was a start TE for me at Georgia State somehow has made his way back to GSU now as new HC after several stops as a OC and HC at other schools.

That's a good idea... but I don't know how to do it. I think I tried it when I wanted Browning to be my OC, but it wouldn't let me pick Niagara... just bounced right over them... I couldn't create a coach and assign him as a coordinator on a team with a human HC. ??

          Subject: The Dirty Dozen

Here's our 12 scholarship players for next season. There are also a few walk-ons that will likely make the final roster, but overall we're going to be ok. The offensive line will be a bit of a work in progress and will be lacking in depth, but all things considered, we had a solid class considering the restrictions.

The following players are listed in no particular order. Also, unless otherwise noted, dull CPU renames are reflected below:

          Troy Rowsdower | LB
          3-star | 6'3 | 213 lbs (78 OVR)
Expected role: We have a young and relatively deep LB core, so Troy is probably a backup / special teams guy for at least his first two years.

          Mark Nunnelly | ATH
          3-star | 5'11 | 187 lbs (73 OVR)
          Expected role: Redshirt for 2021

          George Wall | DE
          4-star | 6'6 | 257 lbs (78 OVR)
Expected role: Reserve RE at the moment, could see situational work in pass rush situations. (dull CPU name stands, as he'll likely be a long-time reserve)

          Marquelle Reese | WR
          4-star | 6'3 | 209 lbs (77 OVR)
Expected role: Buried on the depth chart at the moment, lacks speed but has a big body and can pull down tough catches. Future red zone threat.

          Qudus El-Amin | SS
          4-star | 6'0 | 191 lbs (81 OVR)
Expected role: He will likely sit behind Shovante Banks for the next two years. Qudus is a big hitter, but needs to develop his coverage skills.

          Matt Leach | WR
          3-star JUCO | 6'0 | 195 lbs (81 OVR)
Expected role: Possible gadget player, can take snaps at WR, HB or QB. Most likely role is as a reserve WR. (dull CPU name stands, as he is JUCO transfer who will likely never start)

          Antwaun Hubbard | P
          3-star | 6'2 | 202 lbs (81 OVR)
Expected role: Finkbeiner's replacement at punter. Not much else to say, likely reliable within 40 yards if he's pressed into placekicker duty.

          Kevin Faulk | C
          4-star | 6'6 | 319 lbs (79 OVR)
Expected role: Starting center. Originally looked at him as a defensive tackle prospect, but with our depth issues along the offensive line, it was an easy choice to keep him on offense. (dull CPU name stands for offensive lineman)

          John Cruz | MLB
          5-star | 6'2 | 250 lbs (78 OVR)
Expected role: Redshirt in 2021. He was our lone 5-star prospect and he really wanted to be a Rhino even though we didn't really need him. Hopefully he won't mind waiting his turn for playing time, this kid has a high ceiling. (redshirt player, reserve right to rename dull CPU name next year)

          Tim Brooks | RG
          3-star | 6'5 | 286 lbs (71 OVR)
Expected role: A relatively unheralded prospect, he'll be a reserve in 2021. (dull CPU name stands for offensive lineman)

          Jason Morton | DE
          4-star | 6'5 | 243 lbs (73 OVR)
Expected role: Reserve DE / possible pass rush specialist. In hindsight, he probably wasn't needed and I should have gone all-in for another offensive lineman, but you take what you can get when dealing with sanctions. (dull CPU name stands, as he'll likely be a long-time reserve)

          Boomaine Simmons | TE
          3-star | 6'6 | 244 lbs (81 OVR)
Expected role: Third string in 2021, but has potential to develop into a solid all-around tight end. His strength as of now is on the blocking side, but has decent hands as well.

(Nunyer's Note: As expected, the CPU signed a bunch of guys during the offseason that were never even on my board. I kept the lowest rated 3 or 4 guys (OVRs between 56 and 62) to simulate a few walk-ons and then cut the rest.)

Redshirt players from last season that received dull CPU renames:

QB3 Kevin Jackson is now Hayden Fynbo
HB3 Bryan Butler is now Zonday Jefferson
WR5 Danny Nelson is now Tre Tribble

Wall is a amazing last name for a DE, you just have to give him the nick name the Berlin Wall.

              SPRING PRACTICE 2021!
              PART 1 - OFFENSIVE OUTLOOK

Niagara is coming off their second National Championship and first under QB Tiki Browning. With his legacy cemented and an almost guaranteed Sunday job if he wanted it, Browning decided to come back for another run. He'll have a new offensive coordinator, new running backs and almost an entirely new offensive line. While our initial look at spring practice seems to indicate a similar offensive approach as last season, new coordinator Jordan Welsh has his roots in a pass heavy Air Raid approach.

Today's update will focus only on the offense, tomorrow we will tackle the defense and talk about another new coordinator.

              OUTLOOK - QUARTERBACK

              Tiki Browning / SR (RS) / 6'3 / 231 lbs
After a run heavy sophomore season, Browning stepped up and showed the NCAA that he could win games with his arm. He more than doubled his touchdown passes and threw for 1,100 more yards. Overall, the offense will likely have less overall talent, with new faces in the backfield and the offensive line. All that said, Browning has shown he can get the job done whether the offense focuses on the run or the pass.

              Monte Hall / JR (RS) / 6'2 / 224 lbs
Hall delivered some capable relief work in 2020, proving himself to be much more talented than the borderline walk-on originally recruited. There were some whispers around the program that he was exploring transfer options, but nothing materialized. With redshirt freshman Hayden Fynbo getting an equal amount of snaps in practice, Monte might end up wishing he took what was behind the curtain via a transfer to a new school. Off the record reports from the coaching staff hints that Hall's work ethic has been a disappointment heading into this season.

              Hayden Fynbo / FR (RS) / 6'3 / 216 lbs
Most observers have pegged Fynbo as the QB of the future. He has the potential to be a dangerous dual-threat quarterback. He'll likely never have the arm strength of Tiki, but he throws an accurate ball and has looked solid in practice. As of this writing, I'd think he has the edge over Monte Hall as the backup. He is slightly less polished as a pure passer, but can make things happen with his feet when the play breaks down. That could be huge with an inexperienced offensive line taking the field this year.

              OUTLOOK - RUNNING BACK

              LaQuincey Kemp / JR / 5'11 / 237 lbs
Despite coming into 2020 as the active rushing leader for the Rhinos, LaQuincy was passed by both Brock Apisa and Collin Jenkins on the depth chart. He is a slower, pure power back in a system that is more built around speed. While we expect him to see more carries in 2021 than his first two years on the team, all indications point to this being a four running back committee until somebody separates from the pack. He'll be used primarily between the tackles and will have to prove he can get those tough yards in order to earn more carries.

              Zonday Jefferson / FR (RS) / 6'0 / 202 lbs
Physically he is almost a carbon copy of Kandakai Charles, similar size, speed and strength. So far in practice he is giving LaQuincy quite a battle for the role of workhorse back, but our money has Zonday playing a reserve role for 2021.

              Rex Terwilliger / SO / 5'11 / 163 lbs
An athlete whose natural fit was likely as a defensive back, Rex fully accepted the coaching staff's suggestion that he become a receiving back. Despite seeing only 43 total touches, he managed to score five touchdowns. While he's borderline useless working his way through traffic in the middle, he can be deadly in the open field. We expect his role to remain largely the same, a back that has to respected on the edges when he's on the field.

              Bobo Langerudy / FR (RS) / 5'11 / 181 lbs
He's dumb as a brick and has zero upper body strength, but Bobo is a gifted runner who knows how to make people miss. While he'll likely be little more than a backup for Terwilliger this season, he is the heir apparent to Tanner Kulka as the next Niagara return specialist.

              OUTLOOK - WIDE RECEIVER

              Domingo Garcia / SR / 6'1 / 189 lbs
A consistent contributor for three seasons, Domingo finally gets the chance to be the #1 for the Rhinos. He lead the team in receiving yardage last season and looks to be poised for a breakout year. Garcia has elite top end speed and acceleration and so far in practice they seem to be intent on making him the primary vertical threat.

              Kordivido 'The Colonel' Sanders / JR (RS) / 6'1 / 207 lbs
Sure handed with a knack for the big play, Sanders only caught 13 passes last year but four of them were for scores. Now that he's no longer limited to four WR sets and will see time on almost every snap, the coaching staff is expecting big things.

              Tanner Kulka / SR / 6'0 / 203 lbs
We all know Tanner is one of the all time greats in the return game, winning three consecutive Returner of the Year awards. Now he finally will get his shot as a wide receiver. So far in practice he has worked out of the slot. His predecessor Ike Petoskey was slower than most linebackers but all he did was get open and catch passes. Tanner has speed to burn but his hands and route running are still a question.

              Tre Tribble / FR (RS) / 6'0 / 219 lbs
A physical freak, Tre has polished route running skills and soft hands. He's also a willing and devastating run blocker. As of this writing, he looks to be a lock for WR4 and could press Kulka as the regular slot receiver.

              OUTLOOK - TIGHT ENDS

We won't be getting into individual breakdowns here, as there wasn't any legitimate turnover. Junior Nicos Papadatos returns as the starter. While he likely won't live up to the impossible standard of Latimer Iorg, Nicos is a solid combination of blocking and receiving skills. Behind him is senior blocking tight end Xavier Langston who has only pulled in two catches so far in his career. Incoming freshman Boomaine Simmons is a big body with big potential but likely won't do much in 2021.

              OUTLOOK - OFFENSIVE LINE

Four new starters, one senior along with a bunch of freshman and sophomores. This will definitely be a weaker unit than last season. Run blocking up the middle will likely be a strength, but work towards the edges might expose the lack of speed and agility. The biggest question is whether redshirt sophomore Derrick Shaw can hold up against elite pass rushers. Their only other option is senior tackle Tyler Pope, but he is likely more valuable on the right side to utilize his strength and lack of agility as a straight forward run blocker.

                SPRING PRACTICE 2021!
                PART 2 - DEFENSIVE OUTLOOK

The defensive update might be a little easier to digest, as there are likely less big changes. There are new starters across the defensive line and a new free safety, but beyond that this is largely the same defense... so without further ado...

                OUTLOOK - DEFENSIVE LINE

                Titan Sparks / SO / 6'4 / 233 lbs
Undeniably a bit lightweight for a defensive end, all Titan did as a true freshman was rack up 10 sacks and 8 additional tackles for loss. Despite his lack of bulk, Titan has a solid combination of strength and technique. He could threaten Benny Torgo's team record for sacks at his current pace.

The rest of the starters are largely untested and won't get individual breakdowns. That said, the opposite defensive end spot will likely be highly contested. Redshirt sophomore Keegan Cuffee and true freshman George Wall are battling hard in practice and the race is too close to call. For defensive tackles, longtime reserves Sonny Duda and Beau Blair finally get their chances to shine in their senior seasons... and they better shine because their isn't much depth behind them.

                OUTLOOK - LINEBACKER

No individual breakdowns here at all. The top four contributors return for 2021. In his first year as a starter JR Dequindre won a bunch of awards after compiling 21 tackles for loss and 11 sacks. His production is only expected to go up. In the middle of the defense, Gwilym Iorg has added to the seemingly endless lore of the Iorg clan, leading the team in tackles for 2020.

                OUTLOOK - CORNERBACK

Why am I even bothering making this post? I'm old and lazy and the top three cornerbacks are returning. This and the linebackers are the strength of the defense.

                OUTLOOK - SAFETY

Well at least we have a new starter here! Redshirt sophomore Clay Clements takes over at free safety for the graduated Anselem James. While not necessarily a world class zone defender, Clay excels in run support and delivering open field tackles. Shovante Banks has all the talent in the world but not quite the work ethic to go with it... He can still play on Sundays if he buckles down and lives up to his full potential in 2021.

This is Larry over in Marketing.

The idea for this year's schedule was "The Dirty Dozen" to play off the reduced amount of scholarships we'll have for the next couple of years. Well, our new intern apparently got confused and she used the wrong famous movie as the theme... Let me know what you think, I guess it still works?

                    PITT LANDS TOP QB TARGET!
The heir apparent to Jeremy Palmer will be a true freshman
Report by LACES OUT DAN! | March 24th, 2021

After a longer than usual wait, Head Coach Stevie Browning officially introduced Jesse Ramsey as the future quarterback of the Pitt program. His official signing was delayed due to an academic issue with his former high school. Ramsey spent most of his junior year out of the country with his family and he needed to take additional classes to earn his high school degree. With that hurdle now out of the way, Browning was finally able to announce his star recruit.

"Jesse has a great combination of size, speed and arm strength. He's a rare talent and we're absolutely ecstatic to have him suit up for Pitt. No doubt he'll have to work, he has some big shoes to fill as Jeremy Palmer did some great things last season, but we think we are on the right path to building on that success."

The 6'5, 228 lb Ramsey was a 4-star prospect and considered a Top 20 player that could have played QB, LB or DB. He has stated that quarterback was his first love and stated that having a chance to immediately start for a contending program was his primary factory for choosing the Panthers.

                    BROWNING ANNOUNCES OFFENSIVE CHANGES

HC Browning also stated that Pitt would be tailoring their offensive philosophy to better fit their incoming quarterback. Although there weren't many details revealed, Browning did state that they want to take advantage of Ramsey's mobility and would likely have him in shotgun looks more often than what we saw last season. While Palmer would occasionally run a read option last season and shotgun sets weren't totally uncommon, he wasn't exactly a speed merchant and it was never a focal point of the offense.

                      ECU BREAKDOWN:
                      Offense: Spread | Defense: 4-3

Head Coach Derrick Greenwood finds himself on the hot seat coming into 2021. After back-to-back 7-6 finishes in his first two seasons at East Carolina, Greenwood and the Pirates went off the rails in 2020 with a disastrous 2-9 finish. Things aren't looking to bright heading into this campaign. The Pirates feature a spread offense, but don't have the team speed to pull it off. On defense, they suffer from a similar lack of speed in the secondary and aren't much stronger up front.

                      ECU OFFENSIVE KEY PLAYERS:

                      QB | Adam Williams | Senior | 88 OVR
Williams might not be a very good fit for a spread offense, as he is no threat in the running game (57 SPD / 58 ACC). However he does have a respectable arm (88 THP / 91 THA). In his 5th season, this is Adam's first shot as a starter. In limited snaps as a reserve, Williams has gone 23-for-50, 274 yards, 2 TDs and 6 INTs.

                      WR | Kevin Holloway | Senior | 84 OVR
The lone legit threat among the offensive skill players, Holloway is a decent combination of size (6'4) and speed (91 SPD). He has soft hands (91 CTH) and led the Pirates with 55 catches and 8 TD receptions in 2020.

                      ECU DEFENSIVE KEY PLAYERS:

                      LOLB | Garth Morgan | Senior | 86 OVR
Morgan as a quick first step (95 ACC) and is solid in both run support and pass coverage. Considering the general lack of talent on this defense, he'll be counted on for a huge senior season. In 2020, Garth recorded 48 tackles, 5 sacks and 2 INTs.

                      CB | Chris Cochran | Junior | 81 OVR
We're digging deep here to find another respectable defensive player. Cochran has solid speed (94) and is decent in coverage (84 MCV / 87 ZCV). In limited work as a nickel / dime corner in 2020, he managed to pull down two interceptions.

I've mentioned it before, but I like how you switch up your layout for each season. Keeps the thread fresh, and it doesn't seem like you're already at the 2021 season because of it! How do you think Niagara will fair this year - are the scholarship limits going to hurt at all?

Thanks! Changing things around presentation wise keeps this fresh for me as well, glad you enjoy it. I'll probably keep the game story format the same, as it's somewhat easy to work with and I haven't come up with anything better.

As far as the scholarship thing, I think that's going to hit another few seasons down the road... where I might have to start leaning on some of the 1-star / walk-on types to start by their 3rd or 4th seasons because I won't have the ability to bring in enough top tier freshman.

The main weakness this year compared to the last few seasons is going to be offensive line. Having one 2020 starter declare early along with a locked in 2021 starter deciding to transfer hit me below the belt. I didn't expect either of those losses or I would have given OLine a higher priority with my 12 scholarships. But elsewhere on offense it shouldn't be too much of a change... Same QB, TE and FB... and while we'll have different faces for the top two HB and top two WR spots, the skill levels are similar.

The defense also comes back largely intact, returning a very good LB and CB group. We're probably slightly weaker on the defensive line and definitely have less depth there.

Based on some limited practice snaps I've played, I expect the defense to play well this year, probably better than 2020. I was hoping to have a bit more of a vertical / big play offense this season, but I'm not sure how the new OL will hold up in pass protection. Might have to move back to the 2019 approach, when it was shorter / timing passes and more option running with the QB.
