Corbett announces decommitment as Bulls apply full-court press on Ward to shut down recruitment
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Top 247 defensive end Sheldon Corbett announced via social media that he has decommitted from the University of South Florida. The news should be no surprise to anyone following Corbett's recruitment as he was initially recruited and offered by Skip Holtz' staff as a lowly ranked three-star prospect but a growth spurt -- currently listed at six-foot-seven -- and stellar junior year tape had him shoot up the rankings to a four star.

In speaking to the people around Corbett, he intends to take a visit to Georgia Tech and potentially Troy as well as Mississippi State. While many industry are picking Georgia Tech to land him, the Bulls still have hope because they have something the Yellow Jackets do not: a locked in official visit date.

Corbett will be on campus on the weekend of November 16th in what is shaping up to be a star-studded weekend which is the intention of head coach Malcolm Francois. So far, three-star center Shane Morris, three-star outside linebacker Jeffrey Reese and three-star defensive tackle Ross Barron have all committed to a visit on that weekend.

In a game that could potentially be a night game with huge American Conference standings implications, it will provide Francois and the staff the perfect backdrop to invite recruits in for an official visit.

Two names that are not yet on that list of recruits visiting but that USF is hoping to close the deal on soon are quarterback Grant Oliver and running back Leon Ward. Ward is in a similar boat as Corbett, having received his fourth star over the summer and many predicted that by now, he too would have re-opened his recruitment. Instead, Ward remains committed to the Bulls although Florida State and Miami are making a push.

As far as the three-star quarterback, USF remains in a comfortable lead with Oliver but that has little to do with their recruiting prowess. Oliver has told coaches that he wants to focus on his high school senior season and does not plan on making a decision any time soon. The good news? USF is far and away the top option according to those close to him. The bad news? It might be a while before USF can get him on campus yet alone commit.

Other recruiting nuggets include the targeting of a few tight ends in three-stars Chris Golden, Mike Henry and Thomas Moore. They are all in-state products with Golden and Henry coming out of the South Florida area while Moore is out of Jacksonville. The increased role of Sean Price has no doubt had an impact on the team recruiting the position.

Not to end on a sour note but two players that are on commit watch are defensive tackle Kris Whitaker and center Phil Horne. Several 247 Crystal Balls were placed for FAU for Whitaker while Horne has received one crystal ball to Troy. USF is still in second for both of those players but it's looking more and more like the coaching staff has accepted those defeats. The Whitaker loss is a tough one as his family relocated from Tampa to Sweetwater, Florida this off-season and that has impacted his recruiting.

Francois exploring all options at quarterback as Bulls enjoy off week
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

Malcolm Francois' work with quarterbacks such as USF's own B.J. Daniels and Heisman trophy finalist Collin Klein are one of the reasons why USF hired Francois as their new head coach. In what many pegged as a rebuild year for the Bulls in Francois' first year, his search for a quarterback seems to just be on the way.

Francois benched incumbent starter Bobby Eveld in favor of Steven Bench in the heartbreaking loss to Tulsa. Bench almost completed the comeback but even his own play wasn't much better than that of Eveld. In fact, Bench's 86.3 passer rating in the game is 31.8 points lower than Eveld and he completed just 42 percent of his passes. Nevertheless, Eveld's 10 interceptions to just two touchdowns this season is a stat that Francois simply couldn't keep ignoring.

With the team enjoying a much needed bye week, true freshman Mike White has entered the picture. A highly regarded high school pitcher, White's athletic ability brings a different facet to the offense, one that Francois hopes can help get the offense going.

"We're exploring different options," said Francois during his press availability on Tuesday, "We're not sitting here undefeated and just patting ourselves on the back and saying how good of a job we're doing. Everyone, myself included, is under constant review and we have to step up and make changes where needed."

Francois refused to comment on who will start the game against the Cincinnati Bearcats but starting White, a true freshman, on the road against an in-conference opponent for his first ever college snap might not be the smartest move.

Bulls lose out on local three-star center Shane Moore
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Three-star center Shane Moore out of Pinellas Park, Florida committed to Florida International University over the weekend. Moore, once considered a USF lean, held offers from the Bulls as well FAU, Georgia State, South Alabama and even Florida.

This is one of the first recruiting losses for first-year head coach Malcolm Francois and it's a notable one for a few reasons. There are two seniors on the interior offensive line which will need to be replaced and Moore is within an hour's drive of the USF campus. Losing him to an in-state school that is hours away is especially painful.

Bulls fans should brace themselves for a few more losses. Three-star defensive tackle Kris Whitaker is expected to commit to Florida Atlantic over the new few weeks while three-star center Phil Horne is considered a 'done deal' to Alabama according to some members of the USF coaching staff. The staff is also not optimistic about the team's chances of flipping current UCF commit Drew Graham or being able to keep four-star defensive end Sheldon Corbett away from committing to Georgia Tech.

There is good news, however. The team recently offered unranked JUCO offensive linemen Russ Martin out of the Pensacola area and are making significant headway in the recruitment of linebacker Gary Prince out of Louisiana. Prince has an offer to LSU but many are picking USF to lock up a commitment from the three-star linebacker.

As Horne commits to Troy, four-star DE Corbett could be next in-line
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

For the second time in the last three weeks, a USF target has committed elsewhere. Three-star center Phil Horne out of Vestavia Hills, Alabama committed to in-state Troy University. While that is no surprise, the next statement is. Horne could very well end up being classmates with four-star defensive end Sheldon Corbett.

Corbett was a USF commit since his sophomore season but the last few weeks, he has been trending towards Georgia Tech. Corbett took a surprise visit to Troy last weekend and according to sources, they are now a "real player" to land the six-foot-seven defensive end. USF went from defending their spot for Corbett to now being seen as a distant third behind pack leader Troy followed by Georgia Tech.

The writing seems to be on the wall and has been for some time that USF is going to lose Corbett. What is Plan B? It's out-of-state 3-star defensive ends Travis Elbert (Maryville, TN) and David Conley (Elroy, NC). Neither of them were considered "takes" as of a few weeks ago but if and when Corbett commits elsewhere, expect full court pressure to try to land these two defensive ends. They have similar builds around 240 pounds and six-foot-three and aren't nearly the athlete that Corbett is.

There is some good news for Bulls fans. Not only is freshman Mike White going to make his first career start this week against UConn, three-star QB Grant Oliver has scheduled a visit with the Bulls on Oct. 26 when they host East Carolina. 4-star HB Leon Ward is also expected to be at that game as well as four-star receiver Tyrone Gibbons, three-star receiver Chris Walker and offensive tackle prospects David Mitchell and Terry Scales along with tight end Thomas Moore. It's shaping up to be a busy weekend for the Bulls as safety Tavarious Bailey, cornerback Antwan Shaw and linebacker Alfred Jordan are also expected to be on campus during that weekend.

Some new offers went out over the weekend, one of them being three-star wide receiver Heath Woods out of the Bradenton area, a few miles south of Tampa. Woods was unranked a few months ago but has started to gain some attention from schools like Washington State, Arizona, Oregon State and Texas Tech. USF did not intend on signing three receivers this class and they like what they have in Gibbons and Walker but should a spot open back up in the class, Woods would fit right in.

The other offer was to unranked guard Jake Parker out of Fort Myers which is undoubtedly the team's Plan C after striking on two interior linemen this cycle. The third offer of the weekend went to cornerback Leonard Lilly out of Miami Beach. A three-star cornerback that the team projects better as a safety who is listed at six-foot-one and 188 pounds. Lilly joins fellow Miami cornerback Antwan Shaw and safety Tavarious Bailey as the only secondary targets for USF.

Graham latest of USF targets to commit elsewhere, when will Francois and USF earn a public win on recruiting trail?
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Four-star linebacker Drew Graham joined a now growing list of former USF targets to have commit elsewhere with the Miami product committing to UCF over the weekend. With no games on the schedule this weekend as the Bulls are on a bye, Graham is yet another recruiting loss for head coach Malcolm Francois and the Bulls.

From a more granular point of view, Graham's commitment was expected with most of the staff taking a hands off approach with Graham for the past few weeks. Nevertheless, USF was once in the race for a talented four-star linebacker that in a perfect world, they would pair with four-star defensive end Sheldon Corbett who is now considered a Troy lean due to his uncle being hired recently on the Troy basketball staff.

Things aren't as bleak as they appear for USF on the surface when you look at their recruiting. In two weeks, they'll have almost a dozen prospects on campus including three-star quarterback Grant Oliver who recently scheduled a visit later in the year with Wisconsin. USF is also in good standing with four-star running back Leon Ward, four-star receiver Tyrone Gibbons and pretty much went into Louisiana and are on the brink of getting a player that LSU wants in three-star linebacker Gary Prince.

Even with the Graham loss, USF is on pace to land a recruiting class with three-star LBs Jeffrey Reese, Alfred Jordan and the aforementioned Prince. The only problem? These aren't public wins and in recruiting, perception is reality. USF hasn't had a recruiting win since Francois was hired as the head coach with no new commits and only guys jumping ship.

The team had originally planned wanted for a star studded event late in the season against Memphis but then started scheduling recruits to visit next week. Why? In my opinion, it's to get some of their more locked in guys to be able to commit and/or shut down their recruitment in the case of Ward and Gibbons who are soft commits that are still planning on taking their official visits.

A quick parting shot. Gibbons has long been considered in good standing with USF and a near lock. However, he did schedule visits with Ole Miss and UCF for some time later this season after he visits USF. Simply put, that cannot happen. If Gibbons were to ever make it to the Ole Miss campus, there is a good chance the four-star wideout ends up playing in the SEC.

Bulls' commit Ward cancels official visits to Miami, Florida State and UCF after mystery visit
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Behind closed doors, USF head coach Malcolm Francois has been campaigning for one of USF's verbal commits --- who were initially committed to Skip Holtz and not his staff -- to become an ambassador for the class. Instead, they kept taking visits to other schools and some even decommitted.

Francois finally has his ambassador and it took a bit of coyness and an overnight car trip as four-star running back Leon Ward re-committed to the Bulls and shut down his recruitment, cancelling any plans of a visit to Florida State, Miami and UCF.

Ward was initially expected to be on campus this weekend when the Bulls play East Carolina in a weekend that will feature QB Grant Oliver, WRs Tyrone Gibbons and Chris Walker, OTs David Mitchell and Terry Scales, LBs Alfred Jordan, DBs Antwan Shaw and Tavarious Bailey and TEs Thomas Moore and Mike Henry. With the visit coming up, Ward started to be in more direct contact with Francois and Francois made a surprise visit to Ward's game on Friday night. Francois then visited Ward at his home and right there on the spot, Ward and his family agreed for the four-star running back to go to Tampa and spend Saturday on campus.

"It was like 2 A.M. when we were on the road," said Ward on the Stampede Podcast hosted by X-Man and Caesar, "It was actually cool and stuff, I got to see coach [Francois] outside of a football setting and he's a cool dude."

Ward's visit on Saturday was different then his other typical visits to USF. This time, he was just an observer to the team's regular day as they lifted, practiced and got a chance to eat with the team. NCAA rules forced Ward to pay for his own meal as this wasn't an official visit. By the end of the day, Ward committed to the Bulls and shut down his recruitment.

Listed at six-feet and 186 pounds with legit 4.4 speed, Ward joins an interesting mix at running back. Leading back Marcus Shaw is a senior and Michael Pierre will be a red-shirt senior next season, leaving the starting slot wide open for the 2015 season. With a year of college strength and conditioning along with nutrition, Ward should be a contender to get some snaps in 2014 before becoming a legitimate feature back option as a sophomore.
