Recruiting Class in Review: The nation's 36th ranked recruiting class ended up being just that -- average
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

After an elite recruiting class in 2016, USF was bound to regress to their recruiting mean and they sure did. USF finished with the nation's 36th ranked recruiting largely due to a lack of scholarship slots available on their roster.

With everyone in that class heading into either their senior or redshirt junior season, let's revisit that class and grade it out. The grading criteria is as follows: 1 star for non-contributor, 2 star for depth player, 3 star for contributor, 4 star for impact starter, 5 star for a star player.

        2016 USF Bulls Recruiting Class
        QB David Johnson [QB #6]: 6'3", 208lbs | Tucker, GA | 4-star
        Career Stats » 574 of 807, 7277 yards, 44 touchdowns, 37 interceptions, 155 carries, 272 yards, 6 touchdowns.
Analysis » Who knows what David Johnson would have been this season in a more spread out offense that was better suited for his skills? He was turnover prone as a redshirt freshman and when the turnovers continued, USF head coach Malcolm Francois effectively benched Johnson when he implemented the two-QB system alongside Michael Harrell. Johnson bolted for the draft following that leaving a complicated legacy at USF as perhaps the most talented quarterback to ever play for the school.
        Grade » 4-star

        HB David Ross [HB #10]: 6'1", 221lbs | Hinesville, GA | 4-star
        Career Stats » 320 carries, 1693 yards, 23 touchdowns.
Analysis » Ross was a three-year contributor at USF who never got to be the lead back but he was quite instrumental in 2019 in helping that offense change its identity midseason. Ross returning for his senior season could have earned him a fifth star but in the end, he was just a notch above an impact starter.
        Grade » 4-star

        DT Chris Allen [DT #48]: 6'3", 254lbs | Miami, FL | 3-star
Career Stats » 12 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 5 sacks.
Analysis » Allen was on his way to perhaps being a bust but as a first time starter, Allen has been one of the stars of the defense this season with 8 tackles for loss and five sacks. It's just one year of production but had Allen been able to do this consistently over the course of his career, he might have been one of the best players of this class.
        Grade » 3-star

        OLB James Tucker [OLB #37]: 6'0", 212lbs | Tampa, FL | 3-star
Career Stats » 5 tackles, tackle for loss, sack.
Analysis » Tucker was just never a scheme fit for the Bulls once they switched from a 3-4 to a 4-3 defense as his athleticism just wasn't going to allow him to get on the field. He moved to defensive end as a senior after bulking up and has been a backup this year.
        Grade » 2-star

        DT Ben Jennings [DT #10]: 6'2", 285lbs | Miami, FL | 3-star
        Career Stats » 1 tackle.
Analysis » Jennings had some hype coming in, with many seeing him as an underrated player that should have received a fourth star. Jennings' hype quickly dwindled and he's been a career bench player for years now, struggling to crack the two-deep depth chart.
        Grade » 1-star

        G Nic Haynes [G #39]: 6'5", 307lbs | Bonita Springs, FL | 3-star
        Career Stats » 1 pancake.
Analysis » A National Signing Day get, Haynes was once considered an important signing for USF. He's been anything but that with him not registering a single start and having two true freshman start over him this season and two years ago, he lost the battle to a then true freshman Victor Tucker as well.
        Grade » 1-star

        CB Bradley Bentley [CB #40]: 6'2", 176lbs | Cartesville, GA | 3-star
Career Stats » 117 tackles, 9 tackles for loss, 11 interceptions.
Analysis » This class isn't all bust, they've also got a few gems. Bentley came in as a developmental guy and then as a sophomore, he slid into that dime/nickel back position and excelled with five interceptions. He's been a solid member of the defense since then and one of the better players on this team.
        Grade » 4-star

        DT Ben Woodard [DT #77]: 6'2", 300lbs | St. Petersburg, FL | 3-star
Career Stats » 8 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 3 sacks.
Analysis » We'll see if his senior season can give him a Chris Allen-like career revival but Woodard has been a mix between Allen and Jennings. He's been able to consistently crack the two deep and get on the field but never consistently.
        Grade » 2-star

        DE Taylor Fletcher [DE #24]: 6'5", 255lbs | Tampa, FL | 3-star
        Career Stats » No stats.
Analysis » Fletcher never got on the field for the Bulls.
        Grade » 1-star

        CB Michael Bush [CB #61]: 6'1", 189lbs | Carol City, FL | 3-star
Career Stats » 87 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, 6 sacks, 6 interceptions.
Analysis » The definition of making the most of their opportunity, Bush got on the field as a junior after riding the bench for two years and hasn't looked back. He's been the Bulls nickel corner ever since Bentley moved outside and has excelled.
        Grade » 4-star

        LB John Jacobs [LB #50]: 6'1", 241lbs | Gloucester Point, VA | 3-star
        Career Stats » 6 tackles.
Analysis » It's hard to think of a single memorable play by Jacobs, partly due to the fact that Scott Stewart came in as a freshman and stole his job.
        Grade » 1-star

        Superlative Awards
Most Important Signing: At the time, it was definitely David Johnson as it gave USF it's first ever blue chip at the position.

Most Productive Signing: Bentley has a few all-conference nods to his name so hard to go against him and his constant level of production.

Biggest Bust of the Class: A few different candidates here for what was a truly underwhelming class but Ben Jennings gets the nod due to the fact that he hasn't even been able to be a backup in four years.

Most Untapped Potential: The easy and correct answer is David Johnson because he had Heisman level potential and never quite got it going. How much different would his career have gone had USF ran a different offense?

Biggest Steal of the Class: Michael Bush was the second lowest ranked player in this class and a solid argument could be made that he's in the top four of most productive.

Biggest Lost of the Class: USF didn't lose out on a recruit this cycle, largely because they were selective and landed all the guys they wanted. Not sure if that was a good thing for this class. This might be the Bulls worst class under Francois.

Bulls add track stand-out, Texas corner Ronnie Gay to class as Early Signing Period approaches
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

If football was just a foot race, Texas cornerback Ronnie Gay might be a five-star prospect. Alas, it's not but he's still a pretty good football player and he's headed to Tampa.

USF got a commitment from the three-star corner, joining Dan Ross as USF's two corners in this class. Gay, listed at six-foot-three, is an all-state 100-meter sprinter for his high school and has a verified 40-time of 4.36. Similar to Ross, it might take a year or two for his coverage skills to match his athleticism and USF has shown that it can develop three-star corners into all-conference selections.

The scary part of this recruiting class is that Gay, who many at Round Rock High School think could be an Olympic-level sprinter should he focus on track, is the third fastest player in the class behind Florida products William Stone and Andrew Vincent. Gay will end up being the fourth fastest if the fastest player in the nation., five-star CB Jason Garcia, ends up at USF as well. Garcia has a verified 40-time of 4.26.

Speaking of the Georgia CB, it appears to now be a two-team race for his services between USF and Georgia Tech. USF is in a few other two-team battles as Ohio State is battling them for four-star DT Jeremy Daniels out of Michigan and Wake Forest is in the race as well for four-star safety Edgar Thompson.

Gay is expected to be an early enrollee, as are the other 12 commits from USF's 5th ranked recruiting class. The Early Signing period ends in just two weeks and USF would love to get Garcia on campus early as opposed to his decision coming during the traditional National Signing Day in February.

Bulls add four-star talents S Edgar Thompson and Michigan DT Jeremy Daniels to already loaded class
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

USF closed out the first half of the recruiting cycle with a bang, signing four-star safety Edgar Thompson and four-star DT Jeremy Daniels on the Early Signing Day deadline to have wrapped up most of their recruiting class before the new calendar year.

Thompson was being recruited heavily by Clemson and Wake Forest before his non-committal ways led to those schools dropping out of the race, leaving South Florida and Thompson at the altar. A six-foot safety that brings a punch, USF was able to reload at the safety position at an important time. Current starters Chip Bryant and Trey Davis are both draft eligible and likely headed there. With the signing of four-stars Sam Peterson and Brandon Burns at the position last year, USF has plenty of talent to develop to now rebuild that position group.

The same can be said for defensive tackle. E.J. Newsome should return as a fourth-year senior while a few redshirt juniors in Ben Woodard and Ben Jennings can replace the graduating Chris Allen next season, the next crop of USF defensive tackles are plentiful in this class. Daniels joins fellow four-start DT Daniel Elliot as well as four-star athlete Brad Jones who can play either on defensive line or offensive line.

Both Thompson and Daniels also provide a bit of positional versatility. Daniels is athletic enough to play on the edge while Thompson is big enough and stout enough against the run to perhaps play in the box as either a box safety or even outside linebacker. USF deployed Dan Johnson in a similar role as a junior when the depth at linebacker wasn't as good as it is now.

The Bulls and Malcolm Francois can now focus all of their attention on five-star cornerback Jason Garcia. The Bulls have yet to miss in this class and if they can strike gold with Garcia, USF can certainly hang on to the nation's top ranked class.

                      Next Game: Bowl Season.

Editor's Note: In order to help give insight into how the offensive line is doing besides at the end of the season with awards and pancakes vs. sacks allowed stats, I've created a grading system. The grade takes into account how many pass and rushing attempts there were in a game and grades it against how many run stuffs, QB hurries and sacks allowed by an offensive linemen as well as penalties with added points for pancakes. Those different stats are then extrapolated for 100 possessions to help adjust for pace of play. A 'clean game' from an offensive lineman nets them a grade of 80 so anything above that is considered elite. 70 to 80 is considered a good grade, 50 to 70 is average and anything below 50 is a bad game.

The Curious Case of Trey Davis: the polarizing star blossomed into yet another cog in the USF system
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

"Until we got him on campus, I wasn't completely sure he was going to ever play a down for us."

The subject of that quote was Trey Davis, or rather the 18-year old version of Davis, not the soon-to-be college graduate that now roams at the back of a vaunted USF defense.

At the time, Davis had just finished his senior season at a charter school in his hometown of Midland, Texas. Season is used loosely since Davis did not play football that year. Davis shined as a freshman at Robert E. Lee High School before an altercation with a coach saw him transfer to Midland High School. Davis' time at Midland was short-lived and never played a single down for the Bulldogs before transferring that summer to IMG Academy where he found success on the Ascenders varsity team at corner while also playing three games during his sophomore season on their national team. While at IMG, Davis is rumored to have had an "incident with a female student-athlete" which led to his dismissal according to those close to the program. He would go on to enroll at Greenwood High School and played his junior season there before he was suspended for the Texas State Playoffs for breaking an undisclosed team rule and eventually was ruled academically ineligible heading into the spring.

At the time of his signing, many questioned USF's staff and particularly head coach Malcolm Francois. The incident with a female student athlete at IMG was never clarified and many wondered if Francois and USF were selling their soul in order to land the type of athletes required to compete in the Big 12. Nevertheless, Davis' impact was instant as he recorded an interception in his first game vs. Florida and scored a touchdown on offense in his second game. But it didn't take long for everyone's worries about Davis to be proven true.

A few weeks into the season, Davis was suspended indefinitely. According to reports, David was suspended due to an altercation with a female student while at the female's off-campus apartment. The altercation led to police arriving at Davis' dorm before Davis fled the scene and was eventually apprehended at a later time. He was not arrested. His suspension would cost him just one game but upon his return, he lost his role as USF's nickel corner to a then unknown Bradley Bentley.

Despite all this, Davis would earn Freshman All-American honors as a freshman and then....things went quiet. His play certainly didn't go unnoticed as he went first-team All-Big 12 as a sophomore once he became the team's starting safety. He just wrapped a junior season that will likely net him millions in the NFL Draft, becoming a second-team All-American all whilst avoiding headlines.

"I had a lot of growing up to do," says Davis at the media availability before the team's match up in the Sugar Bowl against Michigan State, "I don't think I was this bad person or anything but a lot of times, you end up in situations and it's like, I shouldn't have even put myself in that space. What was I doing at this place at that time with these people? I'm not making excuses but so much of your decision making is just putting yourself in good positions so that you can make those good decisions and I wasn't doing that."

If Saturday is the last time Davis puts on a USF helmet, Bulls fans should treasure it as he's quietly been one of the best to ever do so.
