I hope ECU's gimmicky offense doesn't give us the same problems as last year, definitely should be able to move the ball on them though, as long as Henderson doesn't get pressured too badly. Thanks for checking in man!

Catching up to everything after my weekend out, and it's been a really up and down start for the Swarm this year. The defense looks like a wet paper bag out there, getting shredded left and right. That Boise back put on an absolute show, and Nebraska's aerial attack lived up to their billing as well. Tough start, but hopefully it makes you more battle tested heading into conference play. I think Henderson will have a field day against some of the lesser AAC competition.

Defense has been AWFUL. Continues to stink against ECU, that recap will be up soon. It has been a tough start, we're probably 3-1 if not for Scott going HAM on us vs Boise, but I do think we'll have an easier time in AAC play, and Henderson will light it up.

        Thanks for checking in!

Report by Isaac Robinson - September 22nd, 2019

363 yards, 5 scores from Henderson as defense continues to struggle

B.J. Henderson put the team on his back, passing for 363 and 5 scores

388 rushing yards, 5 TD on 46 attempts for ECU -- 14 carries of 10+ yards including gains of 52, 63 -- Xavier Meeks shines again with 8 grabs for 153 and 2 scores

Greenville, NC -- Last season, Westlake State beat ECU in a 50-43 OT shootout, wherein the Pirates ran for 349 yards and 4 TD. This time around, although the Swarm once again won, this time 52-49 in regulation, the Pirates outdid themselves, rushing for 388 yards and 5 scores on 46 attempts. That's 8.4 yards per attempt. ECU had 14 carries go for 10 or more yards, including a 63 yard touchdown run for their new QB Dan Davis, who led them with 163 yards and 2 scores on the ground.

How did Westlake State win? B.J. Henderson. The junior set new career marks with 363 passing yards and 5 passing scores, including the go-ahead, game-winning score to fellow junior Josh Roach on 4th and 3 with under a minute to go.

The game got off to a flying start, with both teams scoring 14 in a first quarter that saw just one punt. Xavier Meeks and Josh Roach each caught a TD pass, and for the Pirates, Davis ran in his first career score, and tailback Marques Fitch picked one up on the ground from 6 yards out. The second quarter saw the pace slow down a bit, as ECU scored a touchdown (Fitch from 14 yards on a screen pass), and Westlake State got a TD of their own, as Nic Johnson caught a rare deep ball, beating quite possibly the AAC's slowest corner in Matt Fordinal for a 30 yard TD. The Swarm also managed a field goal, with Joe Romero splitting the uprights from 30 yards out.

Xavier Meeks caught the ball, made a move and was home free

ECU went into the half down 24-21, and got the ball to start the 3rd, but punted. And Westlake State looked like they'd take advantage as Mark Montgomery ran for 16 yards, then Henderson found Meeks downfield for a gain of 34. But the offense sputtered, and ended up failing to convert on 3rd and goal from the 2, setting up a 19 yard chip shot from the right hash. But Joe Romero missed it, somehow slicing it just outside of the right goalpost, and ECU promptly scored, as Dan Davis hit the edge and ran all the way to the endzone for a 63 yard touchdown to give ECU the lead. Things went from bad to worse, as the Swarm went 3 and out thanks to a Robert Coley drop on 3rd down, and then ECU did it again, with John Stephens picking up 52 yards to get the Pirates all the way down to the 2, where Marques Fitch ran in another score. Westlake State were in trouble now, down 35-24 with a defense that didn't look like it could stop the run. The kickoff was short, and Kevin Campbell returned it to the Swarm 40, where Henderson promptly found Robert Coley deep for 51 yards, again picking on Fordinal and if it weren't for safety help, Coley would have scored. Campbell scored a couple plays later from the 2, but Brian Wright returned the ensuing kickoff 101 yards for a touchdown, and put ECU on top 42-31 heading into the 4th.

Dan Davis grins (center) after scoring a 63 yard rushing touchdown. Davis ran all over the Swarm (left, right)

Westlake State answered, as B.J. Henderson threw a 17 yard score on the 9th play of the drive, a huge 3rd and 9 to keep the Swarm in the game. The Swarm went for 2, but Henderson's throw to Nic Johnson was slightly behind him, and the freshman couldn't hang on to the football. 42-37, ECU, and they looked like they'd score again, with a few good gains on the ground, before safety Tyrell White, making his return from injury, picked off a screen pass around the 45 and got all the way back to the 18. Kevin Campbell scored 2 plays later and this time, the 2 point try was good, giving the Swarm a 3 point lead.

ECU weren't rattled by the pick, and went right back down to score another touchdown in just 8 plays, making it 49-45 in their favor, and giving the Swarm 2:46 to score the touchdown they needed. The drive got off a good start, with Henderson finding Meeks for 10, then Kevin Campbell picking up 10 on the ground. Then a pair of incompletions stalled the drive temporarily, forcing a 3rd and 10 near midfield. The Swam opted to run again, and Campbell picked up 12 yards to avoid a 4th and medium situation. Henderson found Nic Johnson for 4 yards, then 8, before finding Josh Roach for 13 yards to get the Swarm down to the ECU 15. On 1st down, Henderson made a perfect throw to Robert Coley in the endzone, who dropped it. 2nd down saw another incompletion, this time Henderson was flushed out and couldn't find Xavier Meeks. 3rd down and 10, down 4, 51 seconds and 3 timeouts remaining. Westlake State needed someone to at least pick up a few yards, and Josh Roach answered the bell, picking up 7 yards to make it 4th and 3 at the 8. Henderson dropped back, rolled right, and made a great throw from the numbers to the opposite hash to find Roach on a slant in the endzone. 52-49, Westlake State, and it ended that way as Dan Davis couldn't get anything going through the air, eventually being sacked on 4th and 3 with 20 seconds to go.

Davis tried to take off, but ran right into Corey Hayes and was sacked

Dion Barkley had strong words for his defense after the game.

Ridiculous that it come down to the last minute.
Westlake State go back home next week to play the 1-3 Memphis Tigers.

                Y2, G5 Preview - @ Memphis

Last Meeting: Westlake State rode 220 yards, 2 scores from B.J. Henderson to beat the Tigers 42-24 to lock up the division.

Josh Roach makes a nice grab

                Coach Barkley's Take

We should win this one. Lou McBride is a smart, fairly accurate QB, but he's not very mobile and has a weak arm. (67 spd, 88 awr, 72 thp, 82 tha) I'm not sure why Nick Rolovich insists on his Air Raid offense when the Tigers have 2 elite backs in Brian Gray (91 spd, 90 acc, 91 btk, 89 trk) and Elliot Williams (88 spd, 86 trk, 86 elu, 95 bcv). Tavares Swain (96 spd, 64 cth, 95 rte), Marcus Coleman (96 spd, 80 cth), and James Turner (92 spd, 86 rte) will all be able to get open and provide the deep threat, while Shedrick Warren (86 spd, 76 cth, 95 rte, 87 cit) is the possession guy to move the sticks. The O-line is good, but ultimately I'm not worried by McBride's arm.

Daniel Gallagher (77 spd, 79 str, 81 fmv) is the main pass rush threat. The linebackers are athletic but not great football players, and the secondary is just OK. Pedro Rivero (92 spd, 89 mcv, 96 zcv) is their #1 corner, but past him they're thin.

Man, ECU just can't put a foot wrong against you offensively, haha, thankfully BJ went Super Saiyan and carried you on his back to a win. I'm surprised we haven't seen him in the Heisman watch yet, though I think that will be coming very soon, especially after what I'm expecting him to do against that sorry Memphis defense.

That Henderson/Meeks combo is clicking right now! I'm also surprised BJ hasn't made the Heisman Watch yet, though it'll probably come with a couple more strong performances. He should have another ridiculous statline against Memphis.

And how about Slaughter's Beavers? 4-0 with a win over USC!

It's the spread, it's so OP against crappy defenses. AAC is looking like the Big 12 so far, all offense with 11 teams averaging 30+ a game early on here. Thank God for BJ Henderson or we'd be in trouble, we really would. Hopefully we do see him get some Heisman buzz.

Meeks has been insane, he's just always open and he's our best YAC guy. BJ should snap against Memphis, they're not great, hopefully our D can hold them under 500 yards haha.

Slaughter's Beavers have done really well, better than I expected and a big win over a really solid USC team. I expected Vader's UCLA squad to be the best performing CAC team, but they're only 2-2 so far and lost to an inferior UCF.

Thanks for the comments! Kicking off Memphis now, I'll have it out in the next day or two.

Report by Isaac Robinson - September 29th, 2019

Henderson faultless as he tosses 358, 6 scores in 62-30 dismantling of Memphis

Memphis' McBride breaks school's single game passing, attempts records, but tosses 4 picks -- Meeks catches 3 touchdowns -- Defense holds Tigers to just 1 conversion on 3rd down in first 3 quarters, 4/13 overall

B.J. Henderson finds Xavier Meeks for a 65 yard score

Westlake, OH -- Wow. B.J. Henderson has really turned a corner, and we might be seeing him play on Sundays as soon as next year. The junior followed up his 363 yards and 5 scores from last week with 358 and 6, with his lone INT being entirely Robert Coley's fault. He tacked on 90 rushing yards, including gains of 45, 26, and 21 yards as he put the team on his back once again.

The first quarter ended 14-14, as the Swarm got off to a bit of a shaky start, missing a field goal and scoring just one offensive touchdown as Henderson went just 4 of 9, with 71 yards and a score. They were only tied because Kevin Campbell got his second return TD of the year, taking a Memphis punt back 83 yards early in the quarter for the score.

It was the second quarter when the carnage started. Henderson started slowly, misfiring on a pair of throws after a 10 yard completion to Travis Vaughn, but then dropping in a dime to Josh Roach on 3rd and 10 for a gain of 30, and finding Roach again on the very next play for the 42 yard TD. How did Lou McBride answer? He threw a bad pick to Mark Landrum, as the weak-armed sophomore couldn't get enough zip on the ball to beat Landrum on a short out route to the wide side of the field. The Swarm scored a few plays later, with Nic Johnson catching a touchdown from 12 yards out after a ncice 17 yard grab from Robert Coley.

The Tigers came back and scored, aided by an offsides call on what should have been a punt, and McBride found James Turner on the 11th play of the drive for a 2 yard score. Mike Jones would miss the PAT, and Westlake State scored in just 4 plays, as B.J. Henderson made a great play, rolling out right and tossing a strike about 30 yards downfield to Xavier Meeks, who evaded Erik Johnson, picked up a block from Coley and ran all the way to the endzone for what ended up being a 65 yard touchdown. Joe Romero matched Jones, missing the PAT, and the score was Westlake State 34, Memphis 20. The Tigers managed a field goal, and then Kevin Campbell returned the ensuing kickoff all the way to the Swarm 47, and B.J. Henderson immediately ran for 26 yards on an option keeper. Mark Montgomery ran for 11, then Henderson ended up finding Nic Johnson for another touchdown, making it 41-23 at the half.

It got worse for Memphis. McBride threw another bad pick, this time to Jeremy Jackson on a corner route. Once again, the throw was late, and McBride's arm wasn't strong enough to beat Jackson. Aided by a facemask call, Westlake State scored, as Montgomery got in on the action, punching it in from the goal line after a 9 play drive.

McBride's weak arm really hurt him here

That kind of broke McBride for a few drives. Memphis wouldn't score again until the backups came in midway through the 4th, and B.J. Henderson tossed another score to Xavier Meeks, the wideout's 3rd on the day. Henderson nearly went for a 7th TD pass, but Robert Coley dropped the ball after beating Pedro Rivero, and it dropped right into Rivero's hands for an easy pic. Westlake State scored one more time, as Montgomery punched it again in following another McBride INT that Mark Landrum nearly took back to the house.

Terrible drop from Coley; Henderson won't be happy with this pick

Despite the blowout, Lou McBride set Memphis school records for passing yards (417), completions (49) and attempts (64), as Westlake State once again struggled to stop the pass, a fact noted by Dion Barkley after the game.

The Swarm have a bye week before traveling to Cincinnati to play the 5-0 Bearcats in a game that could have major ramifications for the division race.

Not sure what else I can say about Henderson right now, he's en fuego! Defense definitely needs to tighten up a bit, especially in the passing game, but a win is a win! Nice to see Slaughter handle the bye with relative ease.

                                Subject: Recruiting

Hey Coach, nice wins over Memphis and ECU, as it's the bye week I figured I'd send you my scouting report to look at.

First up, Cole Cannon at QB. My #1 guy. 3 star QB out of Pennsylvania, I think he's really flying under the radar, and he would challenge for the starting spot whenever BJ decides to leave. He's not a great athlete and we'd have to switch up the offense, but he's incredibly accurate and has a decent enough arm to stretch the field. He's given Purdue a soft verbal commit, but we've reached out to him to try and get him to come on a visit.

Another QB option is Kevin Houston. He fits our offense better, and is accurate, but nothing like Cannon. He also has a pretty weak arm for a guy his size. He can run, maybe runs a bit too much but it's fixable. He's given us a verbal commitment, and every other school has pulled their offer, so it looks like we'll get him.

A pair of linebackers: Stephen Parham and Jeremy Bryant. Parham is a raw, but talented player who needs some time, and Bryant is an explosive athlete who should be able to fill a similar role to what Leon Alexander offers us now. Both players are currently favoring us, mainly due to the possibility of early PT.

At corner, Ernie Mills would slot in at nickel corner immediately, whereas I think Ibrahim Dudley fits better at safety due to his lack of elite speed. Both very talented players, and we have a verbal commit from Dudley.

I have a couple good linemen in Dane Houston and Heath Rankin. Both solid players, I think Rankin's floor is higher. We're fighting Bowling Green for Rankin, and Akron for Houston.

We have a trio of commits in Terrance O'Neal, Wesley Hodge, and Jason McLaurin. Details on them below.

                                Jason McLaurin (JUCO JR) - 2*, #81 TE, Berea, OH, 6'5, 232

                                Terrance O'Neal (JUCO JR) - 1*, #175 T, Lawrenceburg, KY, 6'2, 273

                                59 SPD, 74 STR, 92 ACC, 75 PBK, 75 RBK, 61 IMP

                                Wesley Hodge - 3*, #102 DE, Hamilton, OH, 6'5, 252

                                75 SPD, 69 STR, 88 ACC, 74 FMV, 71 BSH, 70 TAK, 56 PRC
