21 points in the fourth quarter is clutch! 4-2 and Temple looks VERY VERY winnable. Good season incoming!

Yeah big clutch win vs USF there. Temple game out soon, it has been an excellent year thanks to B.J. Henderson. Thanks for checking in man!

How is Temple (2-4) but 3-0 in Conference play?? Well they look to have a couple decent players I doubt the game is anything like last year's outcome. I expect a big win.

Ah I messed up the graphic [emoji24] I always seem to forget to change a thing or two every week, wouldn't be surprised if the date on the game preview was wrong too.

I agree, it shouldn't be too hard to beat Temple. Thanks for the comment!

Note: I played this game a couple days ago, I usually write the recap looking at the play-by-play highlights after the game, this was also kind of a boring one despite the high score so the recap is gonna be short.

Report by Isaac Robinson - October 27th, 2019

Swarm outgun Temple, stay perfect in AAC play

B.J. Henderson had another great day

Henderson continues to stuff the stat sheet -- Defense once again bends, but doesn't break -- UCF win against Louisville ahead of huge clash next week

Philadelphia, PA -- I don't know if I've ever seen a duller 42-35 game. Westlake State stayed flawless in AAC play, beating the Owls in Philadelphia behind 269 passing yards, 102 rushing yards, and 4 total touchdowns from B.J. Henderson as the junior continued his stellar season. Temple opened the scoring, as QB Jack Davis got into the endzone from 6 yards out after the Owls recovered a Henderson fumble, but Westlake State dominated the rest of the first half, as Frank Nelson got his first rushing touchdown on the year, and Xavier Meeks caught his 10th to put the Swarm up 21-7 at the half. They never relinquished the lead.

Temple got a pair of touchdowns in the 3rd, but so did the Swarm, and it was 35-21 heading into the 4th. Temple scored early in the quarter, but Westlake State came back instantly with Henderson finding Robert Coley on a deep ball for a 62 yard score. Coley had a career day with 5 grabs for 117 yards and one touchdown. Temple managed to score again, with tailback Brett Mason catching a touchdown pass on 4th and 3 from the 23, but Westlake State's defense managed to hold off the Owls, forcing a punt and then a 4 and out to end the game.

Westlake State have their biggest game of the season next week: a showdown against #3 UCF (8-0) in Westlake. The Knights have scored 41.4 points per game, good for 9th in the nation, but even more impressive is their defense: #4 overall in the nation allowing just 343.9 yards per game. The matchup between that defense and the Westlake State offense (also #4, 515.8 YPG) should be a great one.

                  Y2, G9 Preview

                  Coach Barkley's Take

This one pretty much decides if we're going to have a good season, or a great season. Both us and UCF are perfect in conference play, perfect in the division. We beat Cincy, if we beat UCF we'll win the division as long as we take care of FIU, Louisville, and FAU.

Jeff Thomas is the guy for their offense. He's a strong-armed gunslinger (90 thp, 85 tha, 94 awr) who can move well (74 spd, 86 agi, 77 acc, 79 elu). He won't take off often, but we'll need to watch the read option and make sure we close him down when we do get pressure. Rob Peterson (90 spd, 84 btk, 87 bcv) is a good back who'll be able to take some of the load off of Thomas' shoulders. Receiving-wise, Adam Goddard (86 spd, 87 cth, 86 rte) has been the man, with almost 3 times as many yards as their #2 Bryant Wilcox. (92 spd, 80 cth) Starting RT Kevin Meyer (87 OVR) is out, and that hurts the Knights because Bryan Young will get to go up against a true freshman in Joshua Lawrence.

D-line is odd for a 4-3, with both Jason Carrington (85 str, 80 bsh) and Curtis Schneider (85 str, 92 pmv, 86 bsh) being more geared towards stopping the run, but are also good at collapsing the pocket with power rushes. Todd Pittman (86 OVR) is out, but these linebackers are still good, with Junior Jones (85 spd, 82 bsh, 77 zcv) being the leader of the pack. The secondary is very athletic, but aside from Matt Collins, these guys lack coverage skill. B.J. could pick them apart.

This is going to be a tough game. UCF's defense has performed very well, as had their defense. We, of course, boast a great offense, but our defense has been bottom 5. We've forced some turnovers, and have come up with big stops, but have overally not been great on D. This will show us where we stand, if we're for real or not. We win this game, we could even crack the top 25.

Interesting matchup. For having such a strong record, UCF really doesn't have a terribly imposing team. They have a couple solid D-Linemen who could bust up your pass protection and make things tough on BJ, and I think that really will be the only way that UCF takes you guys down. Thomas looks good, but his weapons are just alright, and so your defense doesn't need to star but just to keep things close and I think that you guys will be able to outscore them in a shootout.

I agree with Moose. On paper UCF doesn't look like a #3 undefeated team in the country. Obviously they are scoring points and their Defense is ranked Top-5 but who have they beat? I think we are going to see a upset in this one.

Echoing both Moose and Deuce's thoughts here. UCF doesn't seem to have the roster of the nation's #3 team, and Henderson has been playing so well that a legitimate top-10 team in talent would be vulnerable for an upset. I think Westlake is clicking on all cylinders right now and it gets a program defining win behind another stellar Henderson performance.

I think that's the matchup, the trenches when we're on O. We aren't gonna stop them more than a few times unless the defense musters up some magic. If we can buy Henderson time, he'll make the plays we need.

They beat Vader's UCLA actually, but no one else really. Marshall are the only other team above .500 they've faced.

Hopefully Henderson does put up another crazy game, UCF's defense doesn't look that great but you really never know in NCAA.

So all you guys remarked that UCF isn't very strong on paper and I agree. They're only a few points above us, and keep in mind our overall really should be around 82-83 because the injury rating deductions I do nerf overalls by quite a bit. Really just gonna come down to which QB wins the battle. Both are probably NFL bound, and neither defense is that great on paper. UCF are unbeaten, but haven't beaten anyone other than UCLA, who struggled to start the season. It's likely to be yet another shootout, should be a fun game. Thanks to all you guys for checking in, and now it's time to kick this one off! I'll try to get the article out tomorrow or maybe even late tonight.

Report by Isaac Robinson - November 3rd, 2019

SO CLOSE! Swarm lose by 2 to undefeated UCF

Jeff Thomas threw for 355, leading his team to the win

Knights win on the final play from scrimmage -- 2 turnovers from Henderson, but otherwise stellar performance

Westlake, OH -- "We almost had them.", said Dion Barkley after his team lost a heartbreaker to now 9-0 UCF in front of their home crowd. "But almost don't count."

Despite 355 passing yards from Jeff Thomas and a fantastic 104 yard, 3 TD game on the ground from Rob Peterson, the Swarm did almost win it, losing by 2 points as it came down to literally the last few plays of this one.

UCF held leads of 14 and 10 points in this one before the Swarm battled back and led by a point, but a defensive error gave the Knights the break they needed to win this one.

UCF drew first blood, as sloppy play from the Westlake State offense, including a B.J. Henderson fumble, allowed the Knights to take a 14-0 lead with Peterson finding the endzone twice. Westlake State went 3 and out to open the second quarter, but Jeff Thomas was picked off by senior safety Shannon Wilkinson, and that woke the Swarm up, as they'd score in just 4 plays, with Henderson finding Xavier Meeks for a 17 yard score. UCF kicker Geoff Williams would then miss a 49 yard field goal try, and the Swarm went right back down the field, scoring again, this time courtesy of Mark Montgomery from 4 yards out.

Meeks evaded defenders to find the endzone

The Knights answered, as a few big completions set up a 1st and goal at the 1, which Thomas punched in himself. Henderson had 1:03 and all 3 timeouts to work with, and 40 seconds later he found Josh Roach for a 32 yard score that tied it at 21 entering halftime.

UCF kicked a field goal to open the scoring in the second half, and then J.D. Floyd jumped a curl route and nearly took it back to the house, giving his offense a short field, which they took full advantage of, as Peterson would find the endzone for the 3rd time, making it 31-21 in UCF's favor. Henderson bounced back, completing all 7 of his throws on the ensuing possession, a 12 play, 83 yard drive that Johnny Nash capped off by punching it in at the goalline. UCF punted, but Westlake State couldn't capitalize, going 3 and out, and then star wideout Adam Goddard burned Kevin McFarland for a 33 yard grab that jumpstarted a drive that would end in a 31 yard field goal from Williams to make it 34-28, UCF. Goddard, who came into the game averaging over 130 yards receiving, ended up with 7 grabs for 81 yards.

Henderson put his head in his hands after throwing this pick

The next drive for the Swarm ended up stalling, and they had to settle for a field goal from 38 yards. The ball was fairly central, and Joe Romero's kick looked good initially, but the senior sliced the kick just wide, and UCF still led by 6. The Knights punted though, and on perhaps the biggest drive of the season, B.J. Henderson showed his clutch gene, completing 6 of 8 passes and picking up a first down with his legs, before handing it to Montgomery at the 5 for the go-ahead score with 56 seconds to go.

By the time Thomas and the offense started their drive, there were 46 seconds left. They had all 3 timeouts, but the Swarm just had to avoid giving up a field goal, and they had a season-defining win. Thomas threw to Quinton Coleman for a gain of 12, but then Goddard would drop a pass, and a toss to Peterson went for just 7, keeping the clock running. In a seemingly head-scratching move, D.J. Durkin decided not to call time. Maybe he knew something we didn't. Taking the snap from the gun, Thomas dropped back. He felt pressure, as an excellent bull rush from Bryan Young (who was once again held sackless) forced him to step sideways, and he uncorked a deep ball in the direction of Bryant Wilcox. Kevin McFarland was there, but he must have misread the flight of the ball, as he totally overran it, and Wilcox broke off of his route, making the grab and going down at the 6 for a gain of 51 yards. That set up a 23 yard chip shot, and Williams drilled it with a second to go, putting UCF in the lead. Kevin Campbell tried to lateral it on the kickoff, but UCF got their hands on it, ending the game.

                              Ugh... rough way to lose

The loss means that in order to win the division, Westlake State have to win out, and UCF would have to lose twice. Cincinnati has the best shot at making that happen, as the Knights play the 8-1 Bearcats next week in Orlando.

We caught up with B.J. Henderson after the game.

I promised a conference title in my time here and I intend on keeping that promise.
Once again, the offense took care of business, with 5 touchdowns and what should have been a 38 yard field goal, but the defense couldn't get the stops they needed. Kevin McFarland was burned twice for huge plays that ultimately led to scores, and the Swarm sacked Thomas just once. Bryan Young, who still leads the nation in sacks, hasn't gotten one since the Swarm's win over USF, and his teammates haven't picked up the slack. With Young graduating, the Swarm could struggle to pressure opposing QBs next season.

Westlake State remain at home next week, hosting 3-6 FAU as they'll attempt to keep their division hopes alive and cement their case for a bowl bid.

Slow start, but I really thought you were going to pull it off. Bummer.. Crazy that they beat you without throwing a TD
