Note: All stats/records are from 2017

Note: Didn't grab the conference records from last year. I plan on realigning the American next season to a North/South format, I'm aware USF should be in the East division this season, I messed that up.

      Coach Barkley's Take

This is a very good Nevada team. Devon Jordan is a Heisman hopeful. The senior tossed 32 scores last year to just 2 picks, so he isn't going to turn it over. But, other than TE Quinton Faulk, he doesn't have any great receiving targets.

Their O-line is good. Jordan will be well protected, and RG Mark Norman is one of the best run blockers in the nation.

Michael McNeal and Derek Anderson are good backs. They both averaged over 5 yards a carry in 2017, and they could definitely cause us problems.

Dre Smith is one of the best ends in the nation. He can rush the pass, stop the run, and he's a great athlete.

I think their biggest weak spot is their safety tandem. Matt Clark doesn't have any kind of recovery speed, and Nathan Perkins isn't great in coverage. Expect Westlake State to test them often.

Defense may have a tough opening day against what looks like a really solid Nevada offense. I think you should be able to score some points though, their secondary looks like the weak point of the team and BJ should be able to use his skills to find some open Hornets. I think it might be a closer game than what you'd expect based on the team's records from last year.

It's really just Jordan I'm super worried about with our iffy linebackers. His arm isn't great, but his decision making is perfect. He will find any holes in underneath zones.

I'm not worried about the offense this season. Henderson is a very good QB (I lucked out recruiting him, 3 star gem), Thompson is a good back, we have some solid wideouts. Line isn't great, but Henderson can escape pressure. But yeah, defensively we may struggle. We're more in line, ratings wise, with MAC teams but I decided not to go that route for the 3rd time. I figure the better conference will allow us to attract better recruits.

Thanks for checking in man, watch out for the game recap either tomorrow night or the night after that!

The layout is really clean, I agree with TrophyKing. I also think BJ will have a nice game, but going up against their Heisman-caliber quarterback and that Nevada attack will not be fun. Loved the breakdown of the roster and where you'll need immediate reinforcements next season. Good luck in the opener!

Looks like you got a nice mix of solid players on the roster. Always nice to have QB locked down for the next couple of years along with a couple young WR's.

What kind of Offense playbook do you run. You probably mentioned it and I just missed it.

Also good luck with Nevada. Jordan looks like a Kaepernick clone.

Thanks, glad you like the graphics. I do think BJ and the offense will put up at least 24, but man Nevada are actually quite good. O-line is the big need. I forgot how bad the recruiting options are at 1 star prestige. Definitely gonna look at JUCO guys.

Yeah I did a decent job overseeing recruiting while simming, but I should have been paying attention to the line way more than I did. I'm running a playbook based off Clemson's. Pistol and shotgun sets, mainly 3/4 wide stuff. Dives, stretch plays, options and quick passes are the go-to, and I have a ton of PA shot plays for once we settle into games.

Thanks, we're gonna need it. Jordan is very good.

Thanks for the comments guys! About to kick off the Nevada game now!

Report by Isaac Robinson - August 25th, 2018

Come on! Swarm fall to Nevada in a heartbreaker

Nevada score 29 in 4th quarter to win by a point -- Up and down game for soph Henderson -- Starting tailback Thompson goes down

Devon Jordan trucks over Travis Kelley for the game-winning score

Westlake, OH -- Disappointing. That's how Dion Barkley described his team's collapse against Nevada. The Swarm played lights out for the first two-and-a-half quarters, getting out to a 31-7 lead aided by the defense picking off Devon Jordan twice. By the way, that's as many picks as Jordan threw in 14 games last season.

It was a cagey start, with no one scoring in the first. Nevada had a good chance to score, but facing a 4th and 1 in field goal range, elected to go for it and came up short. They also missed a 58 yard field goal attempt to end the quarter. Westlake State came out swinging in the second, with the first snap of the quarter being a sweep to Mark Montgomery that went for 41. 3 plays later, B.J. Henderson ran in a score from 3 yards out. Devon Jordan would be picked off by true freshman Kevin McFarland on the ensuing Nevada drive, and Westlake State managed a field goal.

Nevada came right back with a quick drive capped off with a rushing score from Jordan, his first of 3, but the Swarm matched them, as a 30 yard strike from B.J. Henderson to Jon Smith kickstarted another touchdown drive, this time finished off by Johnny Nash from a few yards out. Nevada could't do anything with just 12 seconds to go, and we had reached halftime with the Wolf Pack on upset alert.

The teams would trade punts to open the second half, before Westlake State scored again, as Nash once again punched in the score to make it 24-7. Westlake State would score again instantly, as Jordan threw a pick-6 to senior corner DeAndre Mosley. 31-7, Swarm.

                          Pick-6!

Then the wheels fell off. Jordan turned it on, and Westlake State didn't get another stop the rest of the way. Nevada scored fast, and then forced B.J. Henderson into a poor throw on a 3rd down for a huge pick. They'd score again in just 3 plays, and on the very next drive Dre Smith got to Henderson as he tried to escape the rush, and jarred the ball loose. Nevada recovered and needed just 5 plays to score, making this a 31-28 ballgame.

A huge Danny Wilson return gave Westlake State great field position, and the Swarm would find the endzone, as Mark Montgomery scored from 4 yards out after some good running from himself and Henderson. Nevada came right back though, and aided by a facemask call, would score another TD to make it 38-35.

It was do or die for the Swarm, and after a 10 yard pickup on the ground from Montgomery, Henderson found true freshman receiver Robert Coley, who shed a tackle and ran down the sideline for a huge 44 yard gain. Fellow freshman, tailback Frank Nelson picked up 8, but an incompletion forced a 3rd and 2.

Henderson dropped back and was pressured, but did a good job evading the rush, and made a throw to a wide open Jon Smith in the endzone... and the senior dropped it. Westlake State had to settle for a field goal, making it 41-35.

At this point, the Wolf Pack offense was rolling, and the Swarm shot themselves in the foot with another facemask. Devon Jordan would run for 7 yards, and then the senior threw 5 straight completions to set up a 1st and 10 from the 12. Facemask again on the Swarm. 1st and goal from the 6. 1 yard gain. Facemask again and this one really hurt because Jordan was wrapped up for a loss on the zone read. He would score 2 plays later from 4 yards out, his 4th rushing score on the day.

The Swarm would try their best with 45 seconds to go, but B.J. Henderson ended up throwing a bad pick in opposing territory, and that was it.

This was a BAD pick. Henderson is looking for Kevin Sykes (in blue)

Dion Barkley was critical of his team after the game, calling the blown lead "weak" and saying that "they have to be better than that."

In addition to the tough loss, Westlake State suffered another gut punch: lead back James Thompson left the game early with an back injury and would not return. He left the field under his own power, but could miss next week's game.

Westlake State travel to Idaho in week 2 to play the Boise State Broncos on their famous blue turf.

                          Coach Barkley's Take

And the penalties. 10 flags, 86 yards? That's awful. These guys have to be better, more disciplined. They'll pay for this in practice on Monday, that's for sure.

Then I'll start putting out the conference standings weekly.

                                Coach Barkley's Take

This is another good team. John Fox can't run, but he can definitely throw the ball. He's got a strong arm and is accurate, but sometimes struggles reading defenses. Marques Ramsey went for 111 on 19 carries in week 1. He's a tough runner who always seems to fall forward.

Don Abrams and Dave Booth are both potential NFL receivers. Abrams is an elite route runner, and Booth has some of the stickiest hands in the nation. Past them, the receiving corps isn't great.

Boise have a very good line. No weak spots, and C Tony Stephens will be a pro. On the defensive side, they have a good pair of D-ends, DTs, LBs are solid too.

Where we can hit them is their secondary. Amir Yusuf is good, but their other corners are subpar. Hopefully B.J. settles in better this time out. We can beat this team.
