I got a little too giddy after that game. In retrospect, I should've toned down the expectations.

(And, in calling my shot, I was in no way foreshadowing anything that is happening later in this dynasty that hasn't been reported. I am two games into the 2025 season, so Rice's junior year. I haven't won a natty yet. I guess that's the only spoiler I'll give.)

      2023 SEASON, GAME 4

Air Force linebacker David Whitfield returns an interception 39 yards.

      You again?
      Air Force gets third victory
      over UNLV since last November

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — UNLV has to be getting sick of seeing Air Force by now.

The Rebels have played the Falcons three times in their last six games. They wouldn't mind the scheduling quirk so much if they could actually beat Air Force.

Tenth-ranked Air Force beat UNLV for the third time since last Nov. 19, 31-7, on Sept. 23, 2023.

The Falcons beat the Rebels 52-14 in the next-to-last regular season game of 2022 and 42-33 in the Mountain West Conference championship game. For good measure, Air Force went to UNLV's field to play California in a bowl game to end last season.

"I'm good if we keep playing them," B-Dawg said. "I like winning."

This game was interesting for maybe a few minutes in the third quarter. After falling behind 17-0, the Rebels scored their only touchdown on a 14-yard pass from Keron Joseph to Nathan Barnes on a third-and-nine screen with 6:23 left in the third. It was UNLV's only trip to the red zone.

UNLV got the ball back with an interception 82 seconds later, but missed a 50-yard field goal try on fourth-and-five.

From there, Air Force put the clamps on the game when freshman Marion Benjamin scored on a 3-yard run with 2:52 to go in the third, making it a 24-7 game. Benjamin showed some promise, gaining a game-high 69 yards on only eight carries.

"We like to have more than one halfback involved in the offense, so it's good to see the freshman playing like that," B-Dawg said. "He's fast, too, so we have some things cooked up to take advantage of that."

Chad Rice, who threw for two touchdowns and two interceptions, capped the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown run with 4:06 remaining in the fourth quarter. Air Force got a short field for the drive when linebacker David Whitfield intercepted a pass and returned it 39 yards to the UNLV 25.

It was another big game for Whitfield, who had a team-high eight tackles, two for losses, one sack and an interception. Strong safety Nate Wilson had two sacks among his seven tackles.

Air Force spread the wealth, with 10 different receivers catching passes. Cameron Everts led the group with nine catches for 112 yards.

        2023 SEASON, GAME 5

Ryan Sampson scores on a 13-yard catch from Chad Rice.

        COACH'S PET
        Possession receiver gets big TD
as Air Force pulls away from Navy

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — It was a crucial third-and-goal in a seven-point game, not the time to get sentimental or play favorites when your playcalling.

But Air Force coach B-Dawg believed that Cameron Everts deserved every opportunity to get into the end zone on third-and-goal from the 3-yard line late in the third quarter.

Everts' 3-yard touchdown catch with 24 seconds left in the third extended Air Force's lead to 14 points, and the fourth-ranked Falcons went on to beat Navy for the sixth straight time in this dynasty, 30-13.

The Falcons were clinging to a 13-6 lead in what had been a defensive battle when B-Dawg called Everts' number.

"Cameron is one of those guys who deserves a lot more credit than he receives," B-Dawg said. "He's a guy who will move the chains for us several times a game. I know he's going to run good routes, he's going to get position on his defender and that he's not going to drop the ball. He just doesn't get into the end zone very much. He puts us in a position to score, but then someone else gets to celebrate in the end zone. It was his time to celebrate."

Everts finished with game-high totals of eight catches for 89 yards.

This game was closer than the final score would indicate. Navy had several opportunities to get into the end zone, but either settled for field goals or went scoreless altogether.

The first instance came after cornerback Derrick Alfred picked off a pass on Air Force's first possession and returned it to the Falcons' 14-yard line just 37 seconds into the game. After a 2-yard scramble by quarterback Brian Hall on a third-and-three left Navy with fourth-and-one at the 5, the Midshipmen chose to kick the field goal.

Early in the third quarter, Navy had second-and-four at Air Force's 5-yard line, but had to settle for three again. Freshman kicker Maurice Wilkerson, who is 70 OVR, was brought out for two unrealistically long field goals and missed both.

"Our defense came up big a few times and their CPU coaching left much to be desired," B-Dawg said. "I've won many games just because the CPU is programmed to kick field goals in any and all situations."

Navy came into the game ranked No. 6 in the country in rushing offense at 270 yards per game, but Air Force's top-ranked rush defense held the Midshipmen to 66 yards on 24 carries.

That defense also made statistical history by getting the first shared sack ever by B-Dawg players when Patrick Dowdell and Jason Pratt got credit for half a sack each.

DeAndre McCollum gets an interception for Air Force.

          2023 SEASON, GAME 6

Air Force quarterback Chad Rice fumbles in overtime when hit by Utah State defensive tackle Corey Keyes.

          CHOKE ARTISTS!
          Air Force blows 24-point lead,
national title hopes at Utah St.

LOGAN, Utah — Think of all the choke jobs you’ve seen in college football history.

Now, add this one to your list.

Air Force had it all in palm of its hands with a No. 3 national ranking, the knowledge that No. 1 Stanford lost, a 5-0 record and seemingly in total control of win No. 6 with 38-14 lead midway through third quarter at Utah State.

Then the Falcons gagged as miserably as one can possibly gag.

Quraterback Chad Rice lost two fumbles while scrambling in the late stages of a game, including the walk-off gaffe in a 47-44 overtime loss to Utah State on Oct. 7, 2023.

The chase for the national championship will go on, but Air Force will no longer be part of it.

"I'm in a complete state of shock," Air Force coach B-Dawg said. "I still don't know how this one got away from us. We had this game in our hip pocket. We should've been able to withstand a turnover here or there, but everything that could possibly go wrong went wrong for us."

Air Force took a 38-14 lead with 7:27 left in the third quarter before everything totally unraveled. After struggling to move the ball in the first half, Utah State put together back-to-back touchdown drives with ease to get within 38-29 entering the fourth quarter.

Air Force scored on a 1-yard run by Marion Benjamin with 6:38 remaining in the game. Then, in what didn't seem like a big deal at the time, a 2-point pass to Ryan Sampson was thrown just a bit behind him and went off his hands. A catch would've made it a three-possession game, but Utah State still had hope, down by 15.

The Aggies appeared to be taking too long to score, running the clock from 6:38 to 1:19 before Terrance Shelton's 2-yard touchdown run with 1:19 remaining. A 2-point pass made it a 44-37 game.

Tight end Timmy Griffin recovered the onside kick for the Falcons, who needed just one first down to seal the victory. Catastrophe struck when Rice scrambled on third-and-five, went to slide to avoid the automatic EA Sports fumbling glitch on scrambles, got bent backwards and lost the ball with 1:05 to go at the Utah State 27.

So, of course Utah State scored the tying touchdown when C.J. Clark was wide open in the back left corner of the end zone with 19 seconds remaining, the Air Force defensive back seemingly distracted by something other than doing his job.

Rice scrambled for 24 yards, getting out of bounds at the Air Force 49-yard line with 12 seconds left. Two plays later, in a scene that will haunt B-Dawg from now until he finally wins a natty, the speedy Benjamin somehow got wide open deep down the field on a snap with one seconds remaining.

          The pass was overthrown.

"My spirit was broken at that point," B-Dawg said. "You try to suck it up, but you know what's up."

The Falcons won the toss, elected to play defense and held Utah State to a field goal, so things were looking up.

Then, just as Air Force learned about Stanford's loss, Rice scrambled on the first play of the Falcons' overtime possession, was hit by defensive tackle Corey Keyes before he could slide, fumbled and Kyle Downs recovered to end the game.

"We have no hope now," B-Dawg said. "A team in our conference has to be perfect and get some help. We can't overcome a loss, especially as we're getting deeper into the season. We will take this loss to our graves. TO OUR GRAVES!"

Utah State's C.J. Clark forces overtime on a 24-yard catch with :19 left in
          the fourth.

Neither did I. I had been winning comfortably and was seemingly cruising to another blowout win ... until I wasn't.

I keep a lot of records, but don't have any records for biggest blown lead. This has to be it. Maybe something else tied it. I can't imagine blowing anything larger than 24 points.

                2023 SEASON, GAME 7

Ryan Sampson snares the game-winning 5-yard touchdown pass with 28 seconds left.

                Sampson scores winning touchdown
with :28 left at San Diego State

SAN DIEGO — The beauty of Air Force's passing attack is that anyone can emerge as the hero on any given Saturday.

It was Ryan Sampson's turn in a 27-23 victory over San Diego State on Oct. 14, 2023.

Sampson caught a 5-yard pass with 28 seconds remaining to give the 17th-ranked Falcons the victory in a clash between two Mountain West Conference teams who came in with 5-1 records.

Sampson made the big catch on a day in which Cameron Everts, one of quarterback Chad Rice's favorite targets, didn't even have a catch. Everts moved from slot to outside receiver during the game when Brian Brown was injured, which limited Everts' chances of catching the ball. B-Dawg tends to target his slot receivers in his offense, because balls to the outside are too difficult or risky to complete.

"I don't go into a game looking to get a certain guy his touches," B-Dawg said. "Sometimes a guy will end up with 100, 150 yards, but it's not by design. It's all about what the defense gives us what what looks we get in certain downs and distances."

The Aztecs got a 19-yard field goal from Anthony Hawkins with 2:08 remaining to take a 23-20 lead. San Diego State chose to run the ball on third-and-nine, but Zach Castillo was stopped for a 7-yard gain at the 3-yard line, forcing the field goal attempt.

"We had trouble stopping Castillo early in the game but, c'mon," B-Dawg said. "At least try to win."

Castillo had 115 yards on 18 carries, getting 91 yards on nine carries in the first half, as the Aztecs jumped out to a 17-3 lead. San Diego State scored two touchdowns in the first quarter in a span of 1:11, but didn't get in the end zone the rest of the day.

"Those early touchdowns had me feeling uneasy the whole game," B-Dawg said. "They always felt dangerous to me. It wasn't until after the game that I realized they didn't have a touchdown in the final three quarters."

Air Force's winning touchdown drive was a nine-play, 75-yard march. The Falcons faced third down only once, a third-and-one situation that was converted when Maron Benjamin ran for four yards. Rice hit Sampson on the next play for the touchdown. Sampson had three catches for 39 yards on the drive.

Worried he might have left the Aztecs too much time, B-Dawg did a high kickoff to force a return that would milk some seconds, but still allowed the coverage team to contain Jacob McNeal at the 24.

In another example of poor CPU clock management, the Aztecs let the clock run after a completed pass with six seconds remaining. They snapped the ball in time and got off another pass, but time ran out.

                Kaiser Cambra-Cho (21) forces a fumble.

                  2023 SEASON, GAME 8

Fabrizio Pinton kicks the winning 38-yard field goal with one second left.

Cameron Everts grabs one of his three catches for 56 yards on the game-winning drive.

                  WHEW!!!
Air Force survives scare by Army,
rallies with two late field goals

WEST POINT, N.Y. — B-Dawg thought he could breathe easily, another victory over Army secured, when Fabrizio Pinton booted the go-ahead 38-yard field goal with only one second on the clock.

After all, what can possibly happen in one measly second?

                  A lot, actually.

If not for a touchdown-saving tackle from an unlikely source, receiver Marcus McConnell, the ninth-ranked Falcons would have been on the business end of an instant classic and one of the all-time blunders instead of 27-24 winners.

Having left one second on the clock, the Falcons were forced to kick off to Army when they should have scoping out the stands for shawties with whom to celebrate 'til 6 in the morn.

B-Dawg called for a squib kick, hoping it would end up in the hands of someone ill-equipped to run back the ball. It ended up in the hands of 80 OVR tight end Anthony Miller, who nearly caused a collective heart attack in Air Force nation.

Miller took off down the right sideline before McConnell made contact. B-Dawg was still terrified, because the CPU always seems to have a way of breaking free from first contact. Cornerback Phil Riggs saved the day by cleaning up from behind, helping bring down Miller at the Air Force 14-yard line to end the game.

"I would've been opening myself up to all kinds of second-guessing," B-Dawg said. "Why did I not run the clock down another second before calling timeout and kicking the field goal? Why didn't I just boom it into the end zone and dare a team that can't pass the ball to throw a 75-yard Hail Mary? Hopefully, I learned a lesson without learning it the hard way."

Army had taken a 24-21 lead with 5:57 remaining after DeAndre McCollum stopped a third-and-goal run from the 4-yard line for only a 1-yard gain.

Dodging a near-interception by Jermaine Franklin on third-and-five, Air Force got the game-tying 40-yard field goal from Pinton with 2:19 to go.

The Falcons got the ball back with 22 seconds remaining following a drive that stalled in large part because of a sack by Patrick Dowdell on second-and-three.

There was only one player B-Dawg trusted to get the ball with the game on the line. Cameron Everts, who had no catches the previous week, caught three straight passes for 56 yards to get the Falcons in position for the winning kick. Everts finished with 13 catches for 167 yards, while nobody else had more than one catch for the Falcons.

"He's not the fastest receiver around, he hardly ever gets in the end zone, but when the ball goes his way, it will be caught," B-Dawg said. "There's a lot to be said about that. I've had my fill of soul-sucking dropped passes in clutch situations."

This was as big a game as you could hope to see from two service academies. Air Force came in with a 6-1 record, having jumped eight places back into the top 10 after a devastating loss to Utah State two games earlier. Army had an 8-1 record, but didn't have the national respect, failing to make the top 25.

Army has one of the top running backs in the country but, as usual, J.P. Anderson was largely neglected by the Black Knights. Anderson averaged 15.4 yards per carry and scored twice, but had only five carries. He has 1,404 yards and 12 touchdowns on 204 carries this season.

A year ago, Anderson averaged 24.3 yards per carry and had a touchdown against Air Force, but got only four carries for 97 yards.

"I'm frightened to think what would happen if Army gave him the ball 20 times a game," B-Dawg said. "The CPU seems to know a good thing when simming games, but not actually playing them."

Such poor game management is a reason why Air Force is 6-0 against Army and 12-0 against the service academies in this dynasty.

Patrick Dowdell gets a key sack late in the game.

Two late rallies after blowing the big lead a few games ago. Coach B-Dawg must have laid the smackdown on his players.

I didn't say a word. I just sat there and let the players suffer in their own thoughts. They knew what needed to be done.

Those games are so much fun to play. It's what keeps me coming back to the PS3 in this dynasty, whereas I got bored in my last one on All-American mode.

                          2023 SEASON, GAME 9

Air Force free safety Halatoa Tai picks off an option pitch on his way to the first of two fumble return touchdowns.

                          Fumble-6 x 2
Senior takes two fumbles to house,
Air Force stomps New Mexico, 50-7

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — You never know when you fire up the PS3, even in a matchup you know you'll win easily, when something special might happen.

That happened for B-Dawg when his Air Force football team hosted New Mexico on Nov. 4, 2023.

Halatoa Tai, an 80 OVR senior free safety, scored two defensive touchdowns for the eighth-ranked Falcons in a 50-7 rout of the Lobos.

That, in and of itself, is pretty noteworthy. In 1,289 games of NCAA Football dynasty mode dating to NCAA 2004, it's only the ninth time a B-Dawg player has scored two defensive touchdowns.

But what made Tai's achievement particularly incredible was that both of his touchdowns were scored on fumble returns, something that has never been done by a B-Dawg player. They also both took place in the second quarter, making him the first player to score two defensive touchdowns in a quarter.

"We don't get a lot of fumbles, we get even fewer fumbles taken to the house, so it's truly takes the right alignment of the moon and stars for something like this to happen," B-Dawg said. "It was pretty cool to see."

Air Force was up only 7-0 after one quarter when Tai turned the momentum of the contest with a huge second quarter. He snagged an option pitch when Air Force was in an all-out blitz, taking it 48 yards for six points with 8:40 left in the second quarter, making it a 14-0 game.

With the Falcons up 21-0, quarterback Anthony Rutledge coughed up the ball when he was sacked. Tai pounced on it and took it seven yards for a touchdown with 4:05 to go in the second quarter.

Tai was hardly the only defensive star for the Falcons.

Air Force got only the second safety in the history of this dynasty when defensive end Quinton Sanders sacked Rutledge in the end zone on third-and-16 with 4:50 to go in the third quarter.

"You know 'Safety Dance' was playing on my PS3 when that happened," B-Dawg said. "Safeties are only two points, but they're my favorite play in football. It's the only play that has its own theme music in my game."

Sanders had a monster performance, with all six of his tackles going for losses, three of them sacks.

Linebacker David Whitfield set the tone for the day by getting four tackles, three for losses, on New Mexico's first possession. He finished with 10 tackles, five for losses.

Defensive tackle Josh Green had two sacks and three tackles for losses.

It all added up to minus-8 yards on 28 carries for a New Mexico ground game that was ranked fourth in the nation with 260.3 yards per game.

                          Most defensive touchdowns

Halatoa Tai (Air Force) vs. New Mexico, Nov. 4, 2023, 48 FR, 7 FR (NCAA 2014)

                          Milestone coming

The victory was the 999th victory for B-Dawg in NCAA dynasty mode since NCAA 2004. He has 290 losses.

The first opportunity to reach the 1,000 milestone will be next Saturday at home against Colorado State.

Quinton Sanders sacks Anthony Rutledge for a safety.

                              B-Dawg gets milestone coaching win
                              in dismantling of Colorado State

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — There are statues erected in his honor outside of college football stadiums across America, declaring the coaching greatness of B-Dawg.

There will be one outside of Falcon Stadium one day, too. You can count on it.

All of the winning that made B-Dawg a legend in places like Ann Arbor, Buffalo, Waco, Nashville, Ypsilanti, Corvallis and Kalamazoo has added up over the years.

Do the math, and it now adds up to a nice, round, shiny 1,000.

B-Dawg achieved the milestone while patrolling the sideline (from his couch) for sixth-ranked Air Force in a 60-13 beat-down of Colorado State on Nov. 11, 2023.

This game was actually played on Feb. 25, 2021. His first official coaching victory came on July 26, 2003 while leading Michigan to a 63-28 rout of Central Michigan University in NCAA 2004. B-Dawg actually began playing the NCAA Football series in NCAA 2003, but cheesed it up so much with cheat pennants and such that he doesn't count those games in his official records.

"I didn't get into this game for the accolades," B-Dawg said. "I got into it for the relationships. At a moment like this, I think back to some of my earliest recruits like Antonio Haines and Joey McBride at Michigan and guys like Bryant McClellan at Vanderbilt and Jeff Cox at Oregon State and David Landrum at Western Michigan. Controlling those guys with my hands was an indescriable thrill you can only get coaching a virtual football team."

How does B-Dawg's milestone match up with real life?

Well, the record for college football coaching wins is 489 set by John Gagliardi at Carroll (Montana) and St. John's (Minnesota). It took him an incredible 64 seasons to rack up those victories. Disgraced Penn State coach Joe Paterno has the most victories for a major college coach with 409 in 46 seasons.

"Those guys coached games only once a week in the fall," B-Dawg said. "I was out there grinding away 12 months a year, often playing three or four games a night until 4 a.m. when I was married to a woman who didn't make it worth my while to go to bed early, if you know what I'm sayin'. Let's see Nick Saban do that! If NCAA 2006 wasn't complete trash and I quit it early and if I didn't enjoy maybe two or three versions of Madden in my early years, this number would be higher."

B-Dawg doesn't play as much as he once did, mostly because of life changes. He won 685 games from NCAA 2004 through NCAA 2009, but only 315 in the 13 years of real life since then.

He has an all-time record of 1,000-290 in 102 seasons of dynasty mode, winning 14 national championships. He is 53-21 in six seasons at Air Force.

Colorado State, which gave Air Force problems early in this dynasty, provide little resistance. The Falcons opened the scoring with 7:12 left in the first quarter when Chad Rice hit wide-open tight end Jon McMahan for a 56-yard touchdown on fourth-and-inches. The Rams' defense bunched the middle, which automatically stops any dive play, so B-Dawg called an audible before throwing to an uncovered McMahan.

Colorado State fell behind 24-3 before making a bit of a run by scoring 10 points in the final 1:10 of the first half. It was all Air Force after halftime, as the Falcons outscored the Rams 36-0 in the second half.

In a controversial move, B-Dawg scored a touchdown with eight seconds left in the game, then tacked on a 2-point run by Marion Benjamin.

                              Why go for two points?

"Because I couldn't go for three," B-Dawg said. "I remember these guys running it up on us when they could have taken a knee a few years back. My memory is long and I believe revenge is a dish best served cold. Don't like it? Then stop me. I'm a freakin' coaching legend! I don't answer to the fans or the media and certainly not to the other team."

Tight end Jon McMahan hauls in a 56-yard touchdown pass.
