    2022 SEASON, GAME 3

Miles Williams of Wyoming returns an interception 71 yards for a touchdown.

    DIESEL CHEATER
    Wyoming QB bounces off tackles
to spark 35-25 win over Air Force

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Remember the old Diesel cheat pennant in earlier versions of NCAA Football?

That was the pennant that, when activated, increased a team’s ability to break tackles — not just by a little, but an insane amount. Ball carriers became wrecking balls destroying defenders on their way to the end zone.

Remember that? That’s pretty much how Wyoming quarterback Joey Dawson looked at times in a 35-25 victory over Air Force on Sept. 17, 2022.

Dawson had only five yards on 12 carries, but seemed to go full-out Diesel at just the right moment — or the wrong moment, depending on one’s perspective.

With Wyoming trailing 7-0, Dawson kept the ball on the option and appeared to be stopped in the backfield. But he bounced off three tackles and dragged a fourth defender into the end zone on a 5-yard scoring run that ignited a 21-0 second-quarter run for the Cowboys.

Later in the quarter, Dawson bounced off a potential sack and threw a perfect 43-yard pass for a first down to set up a touchdown before halftime.

Statistically, Dawson finished with four broken tackles and running back Dauson Booker (19 carries, 103 yards) had three.

“It felt like a lot more than that,” Air Force coach B-Dawg said. “It tears out a little piece of your soul every time you’re in a perfect position to make a stop and the player just bounces off of you like it’s nothing.”

Dawson wasn’t done with the stupidity.

After Air Force had cut Wyoming’s lead to 21-18 early in the fourth quarter, the Falcons had a chance to get the ball back, down only three points. Again, Air Force appeared to have Dawson wrapped up for a sack. Again, the game decided otherwise, allowing him to bounce off the sack attempt and throw a 23-yard pass to Ricky Stanford. The pass moved the ball to the Air Force 14-yard line, setting up a 12-yard scoring pass from Dawson to Robbie Moore with 4:25 remaining.

Air Force was able to go down the field and score on a 2-yard run by Trey Taylor with 2:41 to go, but Wyoming responded with a 2-yard touchdown run by Booker with 1:10 remaining. On the previous play, Booker broke tackles as he bulled his way for eight yards and a first down at the two, pretty much ending the game anyway.

The performance by Wyoming is proof once again that the scouting report from simmed results is pretty much useless. The Cowboys were 0-2 and ranked dead last in the nation in scoring offense at 10.0 points per game and 124th out of 126 teams in total offense at 248.0 yards. Wyoming had 329 yards against Air Force.

Air Force sustained a rare injury that lasts beyond the game when receiver Luc Sturbelle went down with a hamstring pull in the second quarter. He’s expected to miss three weeks. Seldom-used Ryan Sampson had three catches for 24 yards and on drops in his absence, which is a promising sign for the future.

Wyoming quarterback Joey Dawson bowls over Air Force defensive end Jeff
    Porter on a touchdown run.

BDAWG!!! Just spent the last two days working from home and reading through 42 pages LOL.

Much better recruiting class this year than that 14-man disaster you had. Curious what HC GT has in-game since they chucked the ball on you 30+ times.

I’m with you, if I had a 96 SPD QB, I’m not passing. I already run the flex, I’d love to have a guy like that with the ball in his hands and a threat to take off every offensive snap. GT is wasting that talent!

          2022 SEASON, GAME 4

Zachary Larrier takes a knee to finish off Air Force’s first victory over Boy-Z State in this dynasty.

Air Force receiver Hunter Williams grabs one of his two touchdown catches against Boy-Z State.

          AT LONG LAST!
Air Force holds on for dear life
for first win over Boy-Z State

BOY-Z, Idaho — Air Force may go on to win numerous conference championships, bowl games and maybe even a natty or three while coach B-Dawg is running this dynasty.

But you can guarantee that none of those future triumphs will feel as exhilarating as the Falcons’ 23-17 victory over 22nd-ranked Boy-Z State felt on Sept. 24, 2022.

Finally, the beast had been slain. Air Force was 0-4 in this dynasty against the Broncos, blowing a 21-0 halftime lead in a 41-31 loss last season.

It was the type of meltdown that made you wonder if Air Force was simply jinxed against Boy-Z State.

But despite nearly choking in similar fashion this time around, the Falcons got to experience the thrill of lining up in victory formation against the perennial Mountain West Conference powerhouse.

“I’ve won national championships that didn’t feel nearly this good,” B-Dawg said. “I expected to win many of those times. Whenever I fire up a game against Boy-Z State, I expect the worst to happen. Usually, what’s exactly what happens.”

          But not this time.

In a virtual carbon copy of last year’s game, Air Force jumped out to a 20-0 halftime lead on two touchdown catches by Hunter Williams in the first quarter and two field goals by David Chapeau in the second. An interception by David Weatherford on the first play of Boy-Z State’s second possession led to the first touchdown.

“And then we braced ourselves for the inevitable onslaught,” B-Dawg said.

Holding Boy-Z State to a 36-yard field goal on fourth-and-four on its first possession of the second half was a good first step toward putting this game away.

Air Force wouldn’t score a touchdown in the second half, getting its only points on a field goal by Chapeau with 4:35 left in the game to take a seemingly comfortable 23-3 lead.

But you’re never comfortable against Boy-Z State.

The Broncos scored a touchdown with 2:15 left, but Air Force receiver Ryan Sampson recovered the onside kick.

Three straight runs by Matt Howard, subbing for injured Trey Taylor, got the Falcons a first down with 2:06 remaining and forced the Broncos to burn their final timeout.

On what should’ve been the final carry of the game, fullback Brad Tremblay fumbled with 31 seconds remaining at the Boy-Z State 12-yard line.

“I never take a knee,” B-Dawg said. “What are the odds we’d fumble the ball? Pretty good against these guys, I guess.”

It took the Broncos only four plays to cover the 88 yards, with Cole Johnson grabbing a 57-yard touchdown catch with 10 seconds to go, cutting the Air Force lead to six points.

After receiver Trent Brown recovered the onside kick for the Falcons, B-Dawg kneed out a game for the first time in this dynasty because … because of Boy-Z State things.

Taylor had only five yards on three carries before leaving the game on the first series with a mild concussion. Freshman Jared Mann was more than capable of carrying the load in his absence, gaining 116 yards on 13 carries. Howard, who rarely plays meaningful minutes, had 48 yards on 11 carries.

After catching two touchdown passes in the first quarter, Williams dropped three passes and didn’t have another catch the rest of the game.

RYANLEAF!!!! Glad to see a familiar user name on this thread. I'm not sure who is coaching them now. I'll have to check next time I fire up the game. With the coaching carousel in this game, teams sometimes are transformed dramatically. Just look at what I've done with Air Force!

42 pages? I have my settings so I get 20 posts at a time to reduce how often I have to flip through pages. I kind of do my posts with the assumption other people do the same (i.e. trying to make sure a game post is at the top of a page).

A fumble & then 4-plays, 88 yards and a TD by the CPU. Typical Heisman shenanigans!

Larrier had a very "efficient" day. Looks like it was a "don't lose the game kid" type of situation. First win over Boy-Z in the Air Force era. Maybe we'll see a T25 appearance in the next poll???

The way I blew a 21-point halftime lead to them last year was by coming out and throwing 3 interceptions in the third quarter. I figured if I pretty much ran every play, even if we had to punt, it works the clock and makes them go a long field. I learned my lesson.

As you will see as this dynasty goes on, there will be no rhyme or reason to who I beat and who I lose to.

                      2022 SEASON, GAME 5

Cameron Everts grabs a 9-yard touchdown pass before halftime to get Air Force back in the game.

                      NAVY SUNK
Air Force shakes off slow start,
                      stays unbeaten vs. military schools

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — It took B-Dawg some time before he realized Navy has a legit passing game.

Like, he had to wait until the Midshipmen had racked up 17 points on their first three possessions before he understood what he was up against.

After falling behind 17-3 midway through the second quarter, Air Force shut down Navy the rest of the way in a 29-17 victory on Oct. 1, 2022 to remain undefeated in nine games against fellow military academies.

The pregame stats seemed to verify that Navy is a run-first team, as it always has been. The Midshipmen ranked 33rd in the nation at 223.5 yards per game on the ground and 113th out of 126 teams through the air with 145.5 yards.

Kevin Doyle, a 94 OVR fifth-year senior, came out throwing, which had the Falcons off balance. He finished 19-for-23 for 195 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Of the four incompletions, one was an overturned catch on the sideline, one was an interception by Mark Monroe with 1:24 left in the game and only two actually never touched the hand of another player.

Safety Nate Wilson tackled Doyle for a loss on third-and-one, forcing a game-tying field goal on Navy’s first possession.

Following an interception by linebacker David James, Doyle hit Marcell Gleaton with a 16-yard touchdown pass in the back of the end zone on third-and-15 with 8:33 left in the second quarter. A fumble by Air Force quarterback Zachary Larrier on a scramble set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Doyle with 4:38 left in the second.

Doyle completed his first 15 passes for 144 yards before Monroe broke up a third-and-17 pass with 3:52 left in the third quarter.

“They didn’t pass a ton, but it looked like it when you’re selling out to stop an option attack,” B-Dawg said. “Doyle was in full-on robo-QB mode, so we had to honor the passing game after the start we had. I felt completely inept on defense for most of the first half. Balanced offenses give us trouble. If I can sell out against the run or the pass, I have more success.”

B-Dawg switched to a Loop 3 defense, which put some pressure on the quarterback, but still had players back in coverage. As a result, Doyle was throwing a lot of short completions while quickly unloading the ball to avoid the rush.

Air Force sacked him four times and had a total of 14 tackles for losses.

The Falcons began to flip the momentum late in the first half, getting a 9-yard touchdown catch from Cameron Everts with 1:02 left in the second quarter, then getting a 52-yard field goal from David Chapeau with one second left in the half.

Another 52-yard field goal by Chapeau produced the only points of the third quarter, leaving Air Force down 17-16 entering the fourth.

Air Force took the lead with 6:23 remaining when Trent Brown settled down just inside the goal line and caught a pass from Larrier. A 2-point pass intended for Hunter Williams was incomplete.

But could the defense keep stopping Doyle & Co.?

Indeed, it could. On third-and-15, a screen pass to William Little was blown up for a 3-yard loss by Halatoa Tai with 4:57 left in the game. Navy fans booed as their team elected to punt on fourth-and-18 from their own 28.

Air Force took over at its own 48 with 4:32 left, wishing it would have just kicked the extra point after the last touchdown so a field goal would make it a nine-point game.

The Falcons didn’t have to worry, as they marched 52 yards in eight plays, taking a two-possession lead on a 4-yard run by Jared Mann with 1:51 to go. The key plays were a 13-yard catch by Ryan Sampson on third-and-four, a 12-yard scramble by Larrier and a 12-yard catch by Mann on a screen pass on third-and-6.

Trent Brown snares the go-ahead touchdown pass.

Jared Mann runs for a touchdown.

Doyle went full Robo QB. Surprised Navy passed so much. Usually an option based team kills you with the HUNH and broken tackles in Heisman. Is Ken Niuamatalolo (SIC) still HC there?

Big comeback win. Are you usering a LB or Safety? Sometimes when the CPU goes HUNH, I just play edge cause it feels impossible to do anything else when they do it

What is HUNH? It doesn't sound good.

I'm not sure how the coaching carousel has shaken out. I may have to type in the names of the coaches on my schedule in the future. I never think to look when I fire up the game, because I have so little time to play that I just jump into the game.

I don't do user control on anyone on defense. My manual skillz are horrible. I just call the defense and hope guys end up in the right place. I'll grab a guy and hit the square button to make sure the tackle happens sooner, but that's about it. I've watched videos of guys who can do amazing things with user control and I'm insanely jealous.

LOL @ the diesel cheat! What was that? 2004? I would have never thought of that again, hahaha.
I know that Deegeezy and Hellisan were still up and running strong during my hiatus, as I'd peek in here every once in a while. I haven't seen them in a minute.

I had a buddy I used to play in head-to-head games at my house who would accuse me of using the Diesel cheat any time one of my players broke a tackle. He'd say, "Whomp! Whomp!" I guess that was his impersonation of a diesel engine.

Dirty little secret: I did activate Steel Toe against him once. He stepped out of the room mid-game, I went in and activated that pennant. It was late in the first half and I swear I was about 90 yards out when I lined up to kick afield goal. He's like, "Uh ... what are you doing? What are you doing?" I'm being coy about it. I kick the field goal. I shocked myself. I thought it would let you kick 60- or 70-yarders, but that was insane. I was cracking up!

The lesson: Don't leave the room while you're playing me.

Dirty little secret No. 2: I took San Diego State against him, but only after I boosted a bunch of guys to all 99 attributes. I forgot I had done that, started a dynasty, exported the draft class to Madden and drafted a guy named Ronnie Davenport from SDSU. He had 99 SPD. He was my greatest Madden player ever. I had to look to see who he was in real life to come out of NCAA so juiced up. He was an average or below-average player. It took me a while to remember how he became 99 OVR. There was another SDSU player on another team in that 'chise who was also freakishly overrated.

                            Ah, good times, good times.

                              in come-from-behind win over Nevada

RENO, Nev. — As much fun as it was to pick off five passes and take three to the house in the first game of this dynasty at Western Michigan, Air Force coach B-Dawg knew it wasn’t realistic.

“We played awful in that game, as you’d expect in the first game on Heisman mode with a new team,” B-Dawg said. “Those interceptions bailed us out. Since we didn’t have Deion Sanders or Richard Sherman playing back there, I knew changes were in order.”

So, he dropped the user interception slider from 50 to 25, which has resulted in many sure-fire picks clanking off the hands of defenders throughout this dynasty. Interceptions aren’t plentiful and pick-sixes are rare, but it forces B-Dawg to win the game with his offense instead of an overblown interception component in the game.

But for one quarter, the Falcons provided a flashback to that crazy first game in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Air Force intercepted four passes in the second half, including three in the final seven minutes, to spark a 27-24 come-from-behind victory over Nevada on Oct. 8, 2022.

With the Falcons trailing 17-10 at halftime, the pick parade began when cornerback Eian Castonguay intercepted a deep throw against a blitz 50 seconds into the second half. Air Force didn’t score on that drive, but eventually tied the game, 17-17, on a 17-yard run by Trey Taylor with 1:49 left in the third.

Things got really crazy in the fourth quarter, beginning with an interception thrown by Air Force quarterback Haaziq Daniels to cornerback Chad Harrell. That led to a go-ahead 13-yard touchdown run by Devonte Lee with 8:37 left in the game.

Then the interception gremlins began to smile favorably upon Air Force with 7:00 left in the game when linebacker Kory Williams picked off a pass over the middle while the Falcons were scrambling to call a defense against the Wolf Pack’s hurry-up offense.

That led to the game-tying 2-yard run on third-and-goal by Jared Mann with 3:47 left, a drive that was highlighted by Cameron Everts’ 17-yard catch on fourth-and-five from the Air Force 47.

Nevada had a first down negated by left guard Lance Stephens was called for clipping on a screen pass with 3:20 left. On the next play, safety Nate Wilson intercepted a second-and-19 pass and returned it to the Wolf Pack’s 28-yard line.

Taylor, last year’s Heisman Trophy winner, was fatigued-out of the game, leaving the workload to Mann, the promising freshman.

Mann ran five times for 21 yards and third-stringer Matt Howard had no gain on his only carry, setting up the winning 23-yard field goal by David Chapeau with one second remaining. Nevada never called timeouts to have time remaining for a drive of its own, but did use them for the feeble exercise of attempting to ice Chapeau.

Air Force had only three interceptions in its first five games of the season.

                              Quarterback change

Daniels is fully capable of being a starting quarterback for many other mid-major football programs in the country.

Realizing that made it easier for Air Force coach B-Dawg to have a short leash on second-year starter Zachary Larrier early in the game.

Larrier lost a fumble on an option keeper 51 seconds into the game and threw an interception with 4:02 left in the first quarter, setting up Nevada’s first touchdown of the game.

“It can’t be acceptable for our quarterback to go out and crap the bed like that without any repercussions,” B-Dawg said. “Fortunately, we have a capable backup quarterback, so we don’t have to just sit and watch this crap show unfold the entire game.”

Daniels was 20-for-27 for 177 yards, no touchdowns and a pick. He ran seven times for 14 yards.

“Haaziq did nothing to win the job, but hopefully the message will be driven home to Zachary and all of our players that inept performances won’t be tolerated,” B-Dawg said.

                              Cardiac kids

Nevada led 17-3 late in the first half, making this the second straight week that Air Force rallied from 14 points down to win a game.

The Falcons trailed 17-3 in the second quarter in last week’s 29-17 victory over Navy.

Trey Taylor runs for a touchdown.

For as many times as we curse a game for being "against us" these are the types of games where you feel like the CPU is doing you a solid lol. I've had them too and just think, "...never should have won that game."

Sounds like the move to pull Larrier will either get him to step his game up OR the poor kid is gonna be looking over his virtual shoulder on the field, at practice, in class and during field training. God bless 'em, he comes from a great family and everyone wants to see Zach do well.
