    2022 RECRUITING CLASS

    Late targets headline Falcons’
    58th-ranked recruiting class

It was getting late in the 2021 season, and Air Force’s recruiting board was looking rather thin.

Thin in talent, thin in sheer numbers.

Falcons coach B-Dawg went hunting for talented players who may have been waffling on where to attend college, hoping a show of love from Air Force would lure them to Colorado Springs.

    It worked.

Four-star halfback Jared Mann and three-star defensive end Jason Pratt, whom the Falcons began wooing in early November, are the prized signees in Air Force’s 2022 recruiting class.

Mann, the No. 19 halfback in the country, showed up as 72 OVR when he was first recruited, but pleasantly surprised the coaching staff when he arrived early for spring ball with a nice, fat 80 OVR rating.

Mann, who hails from Peachtree City, Ga., is a power back with has 85 SPD and 82 STR. He chose Air Force over Western Kentucky.

“We all love the speedsters, but sometimes you just want a guy who is going to push the pile and get those key third-down conversions and goal-line touchdowns,” B-Dawg said. “Jared will do that for us.”

Pratt went from 72 OVR when first recruited to 74 OVR. The Millville, N.J. native is ranked 20th among defensive ends.

With only three players being targeted in offseason recruiting, B-Dawg was able to throw the farm at Mann and Pratt. Air Force trailed Western Kentucky by 1,110 recruiting points after the regular season, but chucked 5,000 of its 10,000 available points at the running back. The Falcons had a slim 85-point lead over Rutgers in the quest to land Pratt before throwing nearly all of their remaining points his way.

Air Force saved a little for 67 OVR offensive guard Orlando Sanchez, who was put off to be such a low priority and signed with Michigan.

Nobody gets excited about offensive linemen when recruiting in NCAA Football, but B-Dawg is certainly intrigued to see how 73 OVR offensive tackle Josh Watson performs over the next four years.

“We often start seniors who are only 73 OVR, so to get a guy rated that high already means we could finally have someone in the low 90s by his senior year,” B-Dawg said. “It could be fun running behind him if offensive lineman ratings mean anything in a video game.”

Air Force’s class ranks 58th in the nation.

Agree with everyone else. Not exactly the finish any of us expected to see, but I am sure it helped fuel the fire for the next season (being how you are a couple years ahead) Looks like you got some solid players in this class, and are targeting some guy's who will be key pieces in the future. Looking forward to seeing what guy's you land.

Obviously the BSU rivalry is going to be strong in this dynasty. Glad to see the Broncos add another Fiesta Bowl to the trophy case, but would've been really nice to actually see them in a Natty..

Definitely way more exciting to sign those players who are better than listed. Scouting before hand in this game took away too much of the mystery.

I would've liked to have seen them win a natty, too. I'm guessing it would help the conference prestige pitch in recruiting and it would certainly make for a better storyline when we play them - not that we ever need any more reason to hype up that game.

Yeah, I was pretty excited to see that. I was like, "He's ready to just plug in and let him go," except the incumbent just happened to win the Heisman last season. I end up getting the No. 2 halfback a decent number of reps because of the way running backs fatigue-out of games (at least in my settings they seem to).

                2022 PRESEASON REPORT

                ZACHARY LARRIER

                QUARTERBACKS
Zachary Larrier will be the starting quarterback again after throwing for 3,560 yards, 21 touchdowns and 14 interceptions last season. He also ran 102 times for 345 yards and six scores. Larrier comes equipped at 91 OVR with 80 SPD, 87 THP and 90 THA. Haaziq Daniels is a more-than-capable backup if needed at 87 OVR with 68 SPD, 83 THP and 88 THA. Daniels was 13-for-20 for 20 yards and two touchdowns in brief duty last season.

                TREY TAYLOR

                RUNNING BACKS
Air Force is the only team in the nation with a returning Heisman Trophy winner. Trey Taylor won the bronze bust last season, quite frankly, because he was on a user-controlled team, not because he had awesome ratings. He comes into his senior year looking a little better at 85 OVR with 90 SPD, 89 BTK, 80 CAR and 63 CTH. He ran 289 tiems for 1,469 yards and 25 touchdowns last season. True freshman Jared Mann should get a fair share of carries and is the future of this program, coming in already at 80 OVR with 85 SPD, 79 BTK, 75 CAR and 68 CTH. Brad Tremblay, who is 73 OVR with 83 SPD, will start at fullback. He had only six carries for 11 yards last season, with two going for touchdowns.

                CAMERON EVERTS

                WIDE RECEIVERS
A team that had trouble catching the ball in the first few seasons of this dynasty seems to have found some sure-handed receivers. Slot receiver Cameron Everts (81 CTH) led the team in receiving yards last seasonwith 762, catching 55 passes for three touchdowns. He had only eight drops, which is amazing given the hands of stone exhibited by Falcons receivers in the past. Trent Brown (80 CTH) had a little better ratio, with only six drops to go with 51 catches for 604 yards and five touchdowns. Outside receiver Hunter Williams (92 SPD, 78 CTH) had a team-high seven touchdowns last season, grabbing 40 passes for 596 yards. Luc Sturbelle (93 SPD, 80 CTH) will need to develop better hands after dropping nine passes last year while catching 33 balls for 527 yards and two touchdowns.

                JON McMAHAN

                TIGHT ENDS
The returning group of tight ends had a grand total of two catches for 32 yards last season. Jon McMahan had one catch for 21 yards, while Timmy Griffin had one for 11. McMahan will be the starter with his team-high 83 CTH rating, despite having a lower OVR (74-70). Griffin has only 71 CTH. Griffin is a better pass blocker (69-60), but tight ends don’t tend to stay in to block in Air Force’s passing sets.

                GRAHAM LAKIN

                OFFENSIVE LINEMEN
Air Force has one stud in 87 OVR senior center Graham Lakin and one solid player in 81 OVR left tackle Ryan Keating on its offensive line. After that, it’s the usual patchwork group Air Force has been assembling under B-Dawg. Graham has 88 PBK and 87 RBK, while Keating has 80 PBK and 88 RBK. Adam Karas will play left guard at 72 OVR, 77 PBK and 79 RBK. The right guard will be Tommy Brandt (70 OVR, 78 PBK, 77 RBK) and the right tackle will be true freshman Josh Watson (73 OVR, 75 PBK, 82 RBK). Watson is the future star of the line.

                QUINTON SANDERS

                DEFENSIVE LINEMEN
Big things will be expected of junior left end Quinton Sanders after an underwhelming first season as a starter. Sanders had only 17 tackles and three sacks last year after nearly leaving the program following his freshman year. His 89 SPD and 96 ACC is intriguing on the edge. The returning player who had the best season last year is defensive tackle Josh Green, who surprised many by coming up with seven sacks. At 78 OVR, he isn’t even the top-rated tackle on the line, as Hayden Isenhart is 81 OVR. Jeff Porter, who had three sacks last year, is the right end at 77 OVR with 89 SPD.

                ISAIAH NUNEZ

                LINEBACKERS
B-Dawg has had some great linebacking corps in past dynasties. This one surely isn’t one of them. The starters in a three-linebacker set are 77 OVR outside linebacker Isaiah Nunez, 70 OVR outside linebacker David Whitfield and 67 OVR middle linebacker Kory Williams. It’s unlikely all three will be on the field at the same time, as B-Dawg favors 4-2-5 and various nickel sets.

                MARK MONROE

                DEFENSIVE BACKS
Sophomore cornerback Mark Monroe provided a glimpse of future greatness when he had four interceptions and 33 tackles as a freshman. He is 84 OVR with a team-high 94 SPD. He will be joined in the secondary by a serviceable group that includes 79 OVR Eian Castonguay (91 SPD, 99 AWR), 80 OVR free safety Jalen Mergerson (83 SPD, 99 AWR) and strong safety Nate Wilson (79 OVR, 78 SPD, 79 AWR).

                DAVID CHAPEAU

                SPECIAL TEAMS
The only thing that will keep B-Dawg from nailing long field goals this season is his own inadequacy at the sticks. He has no other excuses, as David Chapeau has progressed to 99 KPW as part of a 90 OVR rating. Chapeau has 82 KAC. Punter Fabrizio Pinton is 89 OVR with 94 KPW and 86 KAC. Interestingly, Pinton also has 55 THP and 54 THA, which aren’t horrible for a punter, making him a potential threat in fakes.

                    CLASS OF 2023 RECRUITING UPDATE

4-star quarterback commits to Air Force

Confession time: Recruiting might be a little too easy for Air Force this season.

Air Force coach B-Dawg, frustrated by his first four recruiting classes, did some digging around on the dark web and found some tips and tricks to better recruiting.

One of them, which may be relatively harmless if somewhat unrealistic, is to check how many points teams are moving up or down while pursuing the same recruit. That allows a coach to know if he needs to increase points, lower points or cut bait.

Another, which is essentially like using power-ups in other video games, was to max out his coach’s recruiting abilities. One of the most intriguing “power-ups” is the ability to land insta-commits. Considering B-Dawg has never had one in his first four years at Air Force, this one really appealed to him.

Well, he’s landed his first insta-commit in 76 OVR 4-star quarterback Brandon Blount of Lander, Wyo. Blount is the eighth-ranked quarterback in the Class of 2023. Blount had Air Force No. 1 on his list heading into the 2022 season with a 250-point lead over the next-closest team.

“I would feel a little cheap and dirty, but the insta-commit isn’t exactly automatic,” B-Dawg said. “I will monitor how recruiting goes this year and adjust accordingly if it gets to be too easy.”

Two other players who had Air Force No. 1 on their lists didn’t commit instantly after being offered a scholarship. Ben Charles, a 69 OVR four-star wide receiver, and Marcus Joseph, a 65 OVR three-star receiver, are keeping their minds open.

Air Force will have more recruiting points available this season, too.

                      2022 SEASON, GAME 1

Air Force freshman Jared Mann ran 16 times for 117 yards and two touchdowns in his college debut.

                      RB controversy?
                      Freshman may push Heisman winner
                      after smashing debut against UTEP

EL PASO, Texas — Nobody in Colorado Springs is in a hurry to usher out the Trey Taylor era at Air Force.

After all, Taylor is the reigning Heisman Trophy winner and looked every bit the part in a season-opening 48-45 victory over Texas-El Paso on Aug. 27, 2022.

But while Trey Taylor was doing Trey Taylor things against the Miners, you couldn’t help but be intrigued by the possibilities for his heir apparent at the running back position.

Freshman Jared Mann lived up to the hype in his first college game, getting the ball more than expected because Taylor fell victim to the fatigue settings in this game and wasn’t around for most of the fourth quarter.

Mann ran like one, powering his way to 117 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries. Taylor did nothing that would risk his starting status, running 21 times for 192 yards and three touchdowns.

“Let me just shut down any talk of a running back controversy here,” Air Force coach B-Dawg said. “I’d be run out of town if I benched a Heisman Trophy winner, but I feel very comfortable handing the ball to Jared when he subs into the game. Unlike the quarterback position, you can spread the reps out among running backs. It keeps them both fresh.

“I’ve been using formation subs to keep our starting running backs fresh ever since Kadin Remsberg started missing most of the fourth quarter. Jared Mann will have his day to be the main man and will have a great career for us. This was just the tip of the iceberg.”

What was most impressive was how Mann broke tackles on his way to a 15-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

“We have had a lack of power in our running game, so that was really exciting to see,” B-Dawg said.

                      Third-quarter insanity

If you blinked during the third quarter, you might have missed a couple of touchdowns.

Air Force and UTEP combined to score 38 points in a 5-minute, 17-second stretch of the third quarter, with the Miners scoring 17 straight points to tie the game 38-38 after trailing 38-21.

The Miners struck quickly by sandwiching a 78-yard touchdown on a screen pass from Calvin Brownholtz to running back Brandon Jordan and a 47-yard interception return by Lewis Wilson around a Ed Clayton field goal to get their 17 points in a 2:52 span.

                      An onside kick actually worked

Air Force recovered from that 17-point barrage to take a 48-38 lead with 2:32 left in the game on a David Chapeau field goal and an 8-yard pass from Zachary Larrier to Cameron Everts.

B-Dawg wasn’t worried after Terrance Perry’s 1-yard run with 1:02 left got the Miners within 48-45, because the onside kick has never worked in this dynasty, either for or against him.

                      Surprise!

Nick Brown recovered the onside kick for UTEP and its 43-yard line, giving the Miners a chance to pull off an improbable victory.

UTEP couldn’t take advantage of its good fortune. Perry was tackled for a 4-yard loss on an ill-advised draw play on second-and-10 and cornerback Mark Monroe broke up a third-and-14 pass. On fourth-and-14, Andrew Tate got a step on the Air Force defense, but Brownholtz overthrew the ball with 46 seconds left.

Mann had an 11-yard run to put the game away.

                      Flags flying

Penalties are rare in B-Dawg’s games, but the crew working this game was flag-happy.

UTEP had four penalties for 57 yards, while Air Force had three for 41 yards. In yet another example of horrendous CPU game management, the Miners inexplicably declined two clipping penalties by the Falcons on returns.

Hayden Isenhart sacks UTEP quarterback Calvin Brownholtz.

Glad you gave Mann a single-digit number because freshman phenoms like him deserve nothing less than that. I'm sure you're not totally satisfied with that win though despite the dominant ground attack, as giving up 42 to UTEP with just 11 minutes of possession is pretty concerning on the defensive side. Luckily the Larrier-Taylor-Mann trio should carve up most defenses on your schedule.

350+ on the ground? Nice! Looks like over 80 plays on offense!

Air Force cornerback Kaiser Cambra-Cho sacks Georgia Tech quarterback James Graham.

Air Force emerges unscathed by 96 SPD
of Georgia Tech quarterback in victory

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Seeing that the quarterback he was facing Saturday had blazing 96 SPD, Air Force coach B-Dawg hardly slept a wink all week.

“Like, I was literally freaking out about a video game quarterback the moment I checked out their roster in the preseason,” B-Dawg said.

As it turns out, he had nothing to fear.

It’s one thing for a quarterback to have 96 SPD, it’s quite another to run an offense that takes advantage of it.

Georgia Tech has been known has an option team in the past, but James Graham had the misguided notion that he’s a pocket quarterback. He threw the ball 32 times and ran only eight times (plus four sacks) in the Yellow Jackets’ 27-21 loss to Air Force on Sept. 3, 2022.

Graham had only 29 yards on 12 carries, going 24-for-32 for 269 yards and two touchdowns through the air.

“Normally, passing attacks eat us alive, but I was relieved to see their quarterback wasn’t taking off with the ball on every snap,” B-Dawg said. “If he was my quarterback, he’d never throw a single pass.”

Georgia Tech’s most effective quarterback was actually Kenan Robinson, who came in for one play while Graham went to the sidelines in the third quarter with back spasms. Robinson chucked one deep to Andy Bean, who hauled in a 47-yard touchdown pass to give Georgia Tech a 14-3 lead with 8:13 left in the third.

That’s when Zachary Larrier reminded everyone that he’s a pretty good quarterback, too.

Larrier hit Marcus McConnell with a 5-yard touchdown pass for the Falcons’ first touchdown of the game with 5:18 left in the third, then scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 4-yard run with 1:47 to go in the third, making it a 17-14 game.

Fullback Brad Tremblay extended the lead to 24-14 on a 4-yard run with 3:00 left in the game. Georgia Tech kept the pressure on Air Force by cutting the lead to 24-21 on a 14-yard pass from Graham to Todd Marshall with 1:12 left.

There was reason to be concerned on the onside kick, considering Texas-El Paso recovered one against the Falcons in the season opener. It didn’t happen this time, as McConnell recovered the kick for Air Force.

The Falcons needed a first down, because the Yellow Jackets still had all three timeouts. A 40-yard run by Trey Taylor on the first play down to the 3-yard line eventually set up a field goal with seven seconds on the clock.

Georgia Tech gained 20 yards on a pass to Jaylen Jackson with two seconds left on its last-gasp possession, but couldn’t get off another snap before time expired.

Air Force’s Jared Mann had a freshman moment, being held to seven yards on five carries after gaining 117 yards on 16 carries in his college debut last week.

Cameron Everts, the team’s most reliable possession receiver, was as trustworthy as ever, catching 11 passes for 144 yards without a single drop.

Fullback Brad Tremblay bulls his way into the end zone.

Yeah, I can't remember now if I put him in a single-digit jersey or he came that way. I think it looks cool. Trey Taylor looks boring in No. 27.

UTEP just scored quickly and gave us back the ball. With that kind of time of possession, we shouldn't have allowed more than two touchdowns. The pick-6 obviously factored into that.
