Late targets headline Falcons’
58th-ranked recruiting class
It was getting late in the 2021 season, and Air Force’s recruiting board was looking rather thin.
Thin in talent, thin in sheer numbers.
Falcons coach B-Dawg went hunting for talented players who may have been waffling on where to attend college, hoping a show of love from Air Force would lure them to Colorado Springs.
It worked.
Four-star halfback Jared Mann and three-star defensive end Jason Pratt, whom the Falcons began wooing in early November, are the prized signees in Air Force’s 2022 recruiting class.
Mann, the No. 19 halfback in the country, showed up as 72 OVR when he was first recruited, but pleasantly surprised the coaching staff when he arrived early for spring ball with a nice, fat 80 OVR rating.
Mann, who hails from Peachtree City, Ga., is a power back with has 85 SPD and 82 STR. He chose Air Force over Western Kentucky.
“We all love the speedsters, but sometimes you just want a guy who is going to push the pile and get those key third-down conversions and goal-line touchdowns,” B-Dawg said. “Jared will do that for us.”
Pratt went from 72 OVR when first recruited to 74 OVR. The Millville, N.J. native is ranked 20th among defensive ends.
With only three players being targeted in offseason recruiting, B-Dawg was able to throw the farm at Mann and Pratt. Air Force trailed Western Kentucky by 1,110 recruiting points after the regular season, but chucked 5,000 of its 10,000 available points at the running back. The Falcons had a slim 85-point lead over Rutgers in the quest to land Pratt before throwing nearly all of their remaining points his way.
Air Force saved a little for 67 OVR offensive guard Orlando Sanchez, who was put off to be such a low priority and signed with Michigan.
Nobody gets excited about offensive linemen when recruiting in NCAA Football, but B-Dawg is certainly intrigued to see how 73 OVR offensive tackle Josh Watson performs over the next four years.
“We often start seniors who are only 73 OVR, so to get a guy rated that high already means we could finally have someone in the low 90s by his senior year,” B-Dawg said. “It could be fun running behind him if offensive lineman ratings mean anything in a video game.”
Air Force’s class ranks 58th in the nation.
