    2020 HEISMAN TROPHY PRESENTATION

Ohio State running back J.K. Dobbins won the 2020 Heisman Trophy.

    Ohio State’s Dobbins wins second
    Heisman Trophy in three seasons

NEW YORK — In real life, J.K. Dobbins never would’ve had a chance to win a second Heisman Trophy.

But this is NCAA Football ’14, not real life, as evidenced by some of the things Air Force is doing with Kadin Remsberg.

Dobbins would have bolted for the NFL after the 2019 season in real life — and did — but he returned for his senior season at Ohio State in this dynasty.

The payoff for Dobbins is that he added the 2020 Heisman Trophy to the one he won in 2018 as a sophomore. In between, Alabama running back Najee Harris won the 2019 Heisman. Harris also returned for his senior year this season, but didn’t earn a trip to the Downtown Athletic Club for the Heisman ceremony.

Dobbins received 1,321 voting points to edge Oregon State junior running back Jermar Jefferson by 33 points.

Dobbins did almost all of his damage as a runner, not a receiver, gaining 1,743 yards and scoring 20 touchdowns on the ground. He caught only five passes for 50 yards and two touchdowns.

In three years of this dynasty, Dobbins has 746 carries for 4,747 yards and 49 touchdowns.

      Game Notes
Air Force takes a seven-game winning streak into the Poinsettia Bowl in the final game ever for senior stars Kadin Remsberg, Donald Hammond and Jordan Jackson. Memphis appears to be a run-first team, which plays into Air Force's strengths on defense. Timothy Taylor, a 79 OVR red-shirt junior, leads Memphis in rushing with 995 yards and 12 touchdowns on 185 carries. Three Tigers have at least 548 rushing yards. The passing game revolves almost exclusively around 93 OVR fifth-year senior receiver Damonte Coxie, who has 81 catches for 1,117 yards and 8 touchdowns. No other Tiger has more than 27 catches or 347 receiving yards.

        2020 BOWL GAME

Memphis’ Jaylon Baker picks off a pass that he returned 61 yards for the first touchdown of the game.

Quarterback Brady McBride of Memphis gets a huge block near the line to spring a 60-yard touchdown run.

        Curtain closed
Careers of three great Air Force players
        conclude in Poinsettia Bowl beat-down

SAN DIEGO — If this is what life after Kadin Remsberg will look like, B-Dawg might want to get a job elsewhere.

Air Force got a taste of a future without Remsberg — and it was a bitter taste indeed.

Remsberg, who scored 53 career touchdowns for the Falcons, was knocked out of the game while quarterback Donald Hammond was running the option with 7:34 left in the second quarter of a Poinsettia Bowl against Memphis on Dec. 20, 2020.

The Tigers already had a 17-7 lead by then. Without the speedy Remsberg to rely upon to get back in the game in a hurry, the Falcons completely fell apart in a 47-23 loss to Memphis.

Remsberg, who was most dangerous as a receiver, was actually having a promising game on the ground, gaining 46 yards on six carries before he sustained what was termed a mild concussion.

Also missing by game’s end was Hammond, Air Force’s record-setting senior quarterback. Hammond was gone because of performance issues, getting pulled in favor of presumptive 2021 starter Zachary Larrier after Memphis took a 41-16 lead through three quarters.

Hammond’s first interception came on a bubble screen and was returned 61 yards by Jaylon Baker for a touchdown to open the scoring 1 minute, 57 seconds into the game. After throwing for 48 touchdowns against 26 interceptions his first two seasons, Hammond was disappointing as a senior with 12 touchdown passes and 13 picks.

“This wasn’t how these guys’ careers were supposed to end,” B-Dawg said. “They should have led us to a bowl victory in their final game or, at the very least, been out there battling for the glory of the Air Force Falcons to the bitter end.

“Losing Kadin took away our ability to get back in a hurry. Donald just wasn’t playing up to his standards, not all of which was his fault.”

True. Much of the blame can be pinned on a receiving corps that dropped a staggering 17 passes, as Hammond went 21-for-37 for 212 yards and two interceptons and Larrier was 6-for-16 for 92 yards and a touchdown and one interception.

Reliable possession receiver Trent Brown had five drops and five catches, Hunter Williams had four drops and five catches, Luc Sturbelle had two drops and four catches, and tight end Chris Kane had two drops and one catch.

“Once it was obvious we weren’t coming back, it was important to get Zachary some snaps in a bowl game because he’ll probably be our starter the next two seasons,” B-Dawg said.

        They’re in the books

The game closed the books on the record-setting careers of Remsberg, Hammond and defensive end Jordan Jackson.

Remsberg finished with more receptions (214), receiving yards (4,033) and touchdowns catches (30) than any running back he’s ever coached. He averaged 106.1 receiving yards per game and 18.8 yards per catch. Remsberg also ran 459 times for 2,090 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Hammond was 742-for-1,240 for school-record totals of 10,536 yards and 60 touchdown passes. He was picked off 39 times. He ran 493 times for 2,551 yards and 27 touchdowns.

Jackson finished with a school-record 37 career sacks among his 120 total tackles and 58 tackles for losses. He forced three fumbles and recovered two.

“It could be many years before we have guys of this caliber again,” B-Dawg said. “We were fortunate that the Operation Sports 2018 rosters showed these guys some love when they were sophomores.”

Marcus McConnell catches Air Force’s final touchdown of 2020.

Disappointing defeat to end the season and the careers of Hammond/Remsberg/Jackson. Really intrigued to see how you make up for the loss of them next season, and if there are any recruits in the new class that could take the baton from them.

It's going to take a totally different approach on offense. The new quarterback has decent wheels, but not Donald Hammond's wheels. Nobody on our roster has Kadin Remsberg's wheels, so we will have to be more patient with a dink-and-dunk attack rather than going for the home run ball 4-5 times a game. Having a defensive end who is a freak physical specimen for our level of play was a lot of fun, too.

2020 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME, BOWL RESULTS, FINAL POLLS

Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa threw for four touchdown passes in the national championship game.

Tua concludes Alabama career with natty

Did Oklahoma really think it was going to slow down Alabama’s passing game?

Only with the most favorable sim ever.

The Crimson Tide boasted a 99 OVR senior quarterback in Tua Tagovailoa who could throw to 99 OVR senior receiver Jerry Jeudy, 95 OVR junior Jaylen Waddle and 95 OVR senior Devonta Smith.

This was a receipe for the Sooners’ defensive backs to get Mossed in the 2020 national championship game.

With all those weapons at his disposal, Tagovailoa concluded his Alabama career by going 30-for-39 for 360 yards and four touchdowns in a 49-17 victory over Oklahoma.

It was actually a close game entering the fourth quarter, with Alabama clinging to a 21-17 lead. Then Tagovaila threw three touchdown passes in the fourth, two of which wound up in the hands of Jeudy.

Jeudy caught seven passes for 74 yards and two touchdowns, Waddle caught five passes for 101 yards and one touchdowns and Smith caught nine passes for 82 yards. Najee Harris, the 2019 Heisman Trophy winner who wasn’t even a finalist this year, ran 18 times for 115 yards and one touchdown. Harris finished the season with 1,432 yards and 12 touchdowns on 226 carries.

Oklahoma’s Charleston Rambo caught three passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns.

                  DEPARTURES AFTER 2020 SEASON

Freshman defensive end talked into staying

Graduation was already going to hit Air Force’s football team hard enough.

The Falcons didn’t need to lose anyone else who could still factor into their future.

It took some intense lobbying, but Air Force coach B-Dawg was able to persuade 68 OVR freshman defensive end Quinton Sanders to stick it out in Colorado Springs for at least one more season.

B-Dawg had to guarantee Sanders at least nine games of playing time and that he would get 20 tackles and five sacks in 2021. Sanders had only two tackles, one for a loss, last season.

“I can get him the nine games,” B-Dawg said. “It’s up to him to produce. He’s only 68 OVR, but that means he could be a future star for us. I can’t afford to let someone like that go.”

The day that B-Dawg knew was coming and has been dreading since this dynasty started is finally here. His three record-breaking stars are among the dearly departing, with quarterback Donald Hammond (10,536 passing yards, 60 touchdown passes), defensive end Jordan Jackson (37 career sacks) and running back Kadin Remsberg (4,033 receiving yards, 30 touchdown catches) having exhausted their eligibility.

“People might think we’re going to take a step backward, but those guys raised the bar for everyone and helped bring a culture of winning to our program,” B-Dawg said. “We aren’t rebuilding, we’re continuing to move forward, ever forward.”

                  GRADUATION CLASS

                  Donald Hammond, QB, 97 OVR
                  Jordan Jackson, DE, 96 OVR
                  Kadin Remsberg, HB, 85 OVR
                  Lakota Wills, OLB, 85 OVR
                  Nolan Laufenberg, OG, 84 OVR
                  Parker Ferguson, OT, 82 OVR
                  Milton Bugg, CB, 78 OVR
                  Brandon Gooding, DE, 78 OVR

Tough way to end the season, like you said at least you got a chance to test drive the future, though it looked more like a Prius than a Porsche offensively. Hoping that soon you can be slinging it around like Tua and Bama, what a title game performance that wise. Will be interesting to see the next time you can get someone up into the 90s overall wise.

Yeah, 90s OVR guys just don't fall out of the sky and show up on our campus. If I can get guys progress into the 80s, that's usually good enough for our league. Of course, we want to compete on a bigger stage. At some point (I haven't done it yet after six years), I want to have enough success in the MWC to move Air Force to the Pac-12 or Big XII.

Well, he never got to play against a defense that was taking play calls from me and being controlled by me! He looked like a first-round draft pick against us.

                          CLASS OF 2021 RECRUITING, 2021 POSITION CHANGES/TRAINING

Is Air Force recruiting class a disaster?

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — College football coaches tend to exaggerate the level of talent in their recruiting classes, but Air Force coach B-Dawg couldn’t sugar-coat this one.

“This is a disaster,” B-Dawg said.

                          Accurate.

The Falcons signed only 14 players in a class that is ranked 110th out of 126 in the nation. It’s a big step backward for Air Force, which ranked 49th in recruiting in 2019 and 67th in 2020.

Only one of Air Force’s 11 conference opponents and two military rivals fared worse, as Wyoming checked in at No. 124.

Within that group of 14 players, 75 OVR cornerback Mark Monroe and 71 OVR athlete Ryan Sampson are the only recruits worth getting excited about. Sampson could play quarterback or wide receiver, with B-Dawg leaning toward making him a pass catcher.

“You don’t build a program by getting only one or two quality players and leaving your roster so thin the following season,” B-Dawg said. “Either I have to be less picky so we can have full recruiting classes or I need to become a better recruiter.”

Air Force actually signed a four-star prospect in quarterback Kevin Moyer, who is ranked 15th in the nation at his position, but he checks in at only 69 OVR.

“Zachary Larrier will be our starter the next two years,” B-Dawg said. “I hope we’re good enough by then to recruit someone with a higher rating to succeed him.”

Air Force targeted 74 OVR quarterback Michael Williams, but he committed to Boston College.

                            2021 PRESEASON REPORT

                            ZACHARY LARRIER

                            QUARTERBACKS
It’s time to move on from Donald Hammond’s record-breaking three-year career at quarterback and tab his successor. Junior Zachary Larrier has been handed the keys to the Mercedes, though it could look more like a Prius with a drop in talent at quarterback and the loss of the team’s all-time leading receiver. Larrier is right about where you’d expect a Mountain West Conference starting quarterback to be at 81 OVR. He will be able to maintain some option and scrambling ability with his 80 SPD, which complements his 86 THP and 85 THA. The backup is 78 OVR junior Haaziq Daniels, who has 67 SPD, 82 THP and 84 THA.

                            TREY TAYLOR

                            RUNNING BACKS
The way B-Dawg uses his running backs will be markedly different now that speedster Kadin Remsberg has graduated. Remsberg set the school receiving records because of his ability to create mismatches deep coming out of the backfield. The Falcons don’t have anyone who approaches his 96 SPD, so look for a more traditional use of the running backs. Trey Taylor got meaningful playing time last year, as B-Dawg had him in formations from which the Falcons would typically run the ball. He ran 128 times for 477 yards and 16 touchdowns, often collecting garbage near the end zone. Taylor has 89 SPD, 83 BTK, 76 CAR and 62 CTH. Backup Joshua Stoner has an 81-80 edge in OVR, but lacks slightly in SPD (88) and BTK (81). Taylor is likely to get the lion’s share of the carries. Brad Tremblay has nice 82 SPD and 85 ACC from the fullback position, which should be nice for short-yardage bursts on third down.

                            TRENT BROWN

                            WIDE RECEIVERS
With Remsberg gone, none of the targets in Air Force’s passing game will scare defenses. Luc Sturbelle is the fastest player in the receiving corps with 93 SPD, but he averaged only 9.8 yards per catch last year in a small sample size, grabbing 13 catches for 128 yards. Possession receiver Trent Brown led the team in catches last year with 68, scoring only one touchdown. He was two yards shy of 1,000, which pains B-Dawg greatly. Brown has 90 SPD and 77 CTH. Sophomore Cameron Everts has the best catch rating among receivers at 78, so he will be the top slot receiver. Everything else is just unremarkable interchangeable pieces.

                            CHRIS KANE

                            TIGHT ENDS
As hard as it is to believe, the best hands on the team belong to two tight ends. Chris Kane leads the Falcons with an 81 CTH rating to go with his 80 SPD. Jon McMahan, who came to Air Force as a fullback, has 79 CTH. Tight ends caught only 17 passes for 109 yards and one touchdown last season, so these guys will be on the field more as decoys or in a blocking role. Kane has decent 77 RBK and 76 PBK ratings.

                            GRAHAM LAKIN

                            OFFENSIVE LINEMEN
Air Force’s offensive line always seems to be a patchwork group of mediocre players with little experience, as the higher-rated guys graduate and the returning players progress. This year is no different, with only one of the five starters rated in the 80s. It’s a safe bet that Air Force will be running toward the left side of the line most of the time, because the starters on the right side are 64 OVR tackle Nathan Hoffman and 67 OVR Adam Karas at guard. The left side isn’t anything to write home about, but it’s significantly better with 76 OVR Ryan Keating at tackle and 74 OVR Jackson McDowell at guard. The top player on the line is 81 OVR center Graham Lakin, who will be counted on to protect against plays being destroyed up the middle. Lakin is rated 81 STR, 83 RBI and 84 PBK.

                            KAMAKANI CROSBY

                            DEFENSIVE LINEMEN
The defensive line will miss All-American Jordan Jackson, the school’s all-time sack leader. Sophomore Quinton Sanders will be given the coveted left defensive end spot that Jackson held down the last three years. Sanders is 72 OVR, while Demetris Dorceus is 73 OVR, but B-Dawg is intrigued by Sanders’ 88 SPD and 94 ACC coming off the edge. B-Dawg traditionally gets most of his sacks from the left defensive end. Jeff Porter, who is 73 OVR, will start at right end. The defensive tackles aren’t horrible, with 79 OVR Kamakani Crosby and 77 OVR Hayden Isenhart starting when the Falcons use four linemen. Crosby had seven sacks and 11 tackles for losse last season.

                            GRANT DONALDSON

                            LINEBACKERS
The linebacking corps has the potential to be pretty good, with 81 OVR Grant Donaldson at right outside linebacker, 80 OVR Demonte Meeks at middle linebacker and 76 OVR Jace Bobo at left outside linebacker. Meeks and Donaldson both have 99 AWR, so they should be able to carry out their assignments. None of these guys really balled out last year, with Donaldson’s 23 tackles the most among the returning players. Is there another Christopher Musselman in the group, a middle linebacker who came into his senior season unheralded last year but finished with 81 tackles and 20 for losses? We shall see.

                            GARY MOSSOP

                            DEFENSIVE BACKS
Everyone in Colorado Springs is excited about the arrival of the 80 OVR freshman Mark Monroe, B-Dawg’s highest-rated position recruit in his three seasons. Monroe has 93 SPD, 66 TAK, 68 CTH, 85 man coverage, 84 zone coverage and can be trusted on an island with his 70 AWR. This is a seasoned group, with 81 OVR strong safety Gary Mossop finishing second on the team with 78 tackles last season and 74 OVR free safety Jalen Mergerson finishing third with 77. Mossop and Mergerson have 99 AWR.

                            DAVID CHAPEAU

                            SPECIAL TEAMS
After being afraid to kick anything over 40 yards the first two years, B-Dawg found confidence in kicker David Chapeau last year. Chapeau was 22-for-28 on field goals with a long of 47 yards last season. He should have greater range this year wth 94 KPW and 76 KAC. Fabrizio Pinton, who has 89 KPW and 80 KAC, will handle the punting duties. Pinton averaged 38.7 yards a punt and put six of 30 inside the 20, numbers that need to improve this season.

Air Force junior Trey Taylor runs for one of his three touchdowns against New Mexico State.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Kadin who?

In his first full game as the No. 1 running back for Air Force, junior Trey Taylor did his best to make everyone forget about Kadin Remsberg, the speedster who broke all of the school’s single-season and career receiving records from the halfback position.

And while nobody will ever really forget Remsberg, one of B-Dawg’s all-time greatest players, Taylor looks capable of carving out a niche for himself as an elite player in this dynasty.

OK, so the opposition was only New Mexico State, the latest cupcake B-Dawg scheduled to avoid a repeat of the 2019 disaster in which he missed out on a bowl game for the first time since NCAA 2007. The Aggies were ranked dead last among 126 teams in the nation and their defense is rated 73, so nobody will mistake it for Alabama.

But they’re on scholarship, too, so Taylor’s performance in a season-opening 49-14 rout of New Mexico State on Aug. 28, 2021 is worth getting at least a little excited about.

Taylor ran 23 times for 141 yards and three touchdowns. He definitely won’t be featured in the passing game like Remsberg, but he did OK by catching three passes for 43 yards. He had a 33-yard catch up the seam when he was left uncovered because of a blitz.

“Trey and Joshua Stoner have virtually identical ratings, so Trey knows he needs to produce, because he’s on a short leash,” Air Force coach B-Dawg said. “He performed like a No. 1 running back today, an actual running back, not some gimmick we use to exploit mismatches in the passing game.”

Also replacing an Air Force record-breaking player is junior quarterback Zachary Larrier, who went 21-for-26 for 258 yards, one touchdown and one interception in his first career start. He also ran for a touchdown.

“Zachary looked solid for a first game,” B-Dawg said. “Even on the interception, it wasn’t his fault. The receiver cut off his route, which left the defender all alone in that space to pick off the pass.”

Another player Air Force fans were excited to see is 80 OVR freshman cornerback Mark Monroe. Monroe didn’t make a good first impression, fumbling the first punt of the game to set up a 29-yard touchdown pass from Josh Adkins to Kelly Liston to open the scoring with 7:39 left in the first quarter. As a defender, Monroe had four tackles.

B-Dawg immediately handed punt return duties to Luc Sturbelle after that.

“Mark doesn’t need return duties added to his plate just yet,” B-Dawg said. “Let him get comfortable on defense first, then we can revisit expanding his role.”

Air Force responded with three straight touchdowns after falling behind 7-0, but the Aggies hung around, getting within 21-14 on a 25-yard pass from Adkins to Tevis Abraham with 59 seconds left in the first half.

In a good sign for Larrier, he led the Falcons on a two-minute drill that was actually a one-minute drill, getting them in the end zone with a 14-yard pass to tight end Chris Kane with 29 seconds to go in the half.

Air Force shut out New Mexico State in the second half and added three more touchdowns.

With its two touchdowns coming on plays longer than 20 yards, New Mexico State got in the red zone only once, while Air Force scored seven touchdowns on seven trips inside the 20. On that one occasion, defensive tackle Kamakani Crosby got a sack on fourth-and-inches from the 1-yard line with four seconds left in the game.

“I hate when the CPU tacks on cheap touchdowns at the end of games,” B-Dawg said. “I covet my defensive stats, so we weren’t going to put backups out there while their starters were still going strong.”

New Mexico had only two tackles for losses, while Air Force had 12.

Sophomore Cameron Everts emerged as a reliable possession receiver for the Falcons, catching nine passes for 96 yards without dropping a pass.

Hunter Williams grabs a touchdown pass for Air Force.
