December 2019: Snyder Sells To League

League Steps In, Forces Snyder To Sell

Landover, MD - The Washington Redskins will no longer belong to Dan Snyder after an internal probe has revealed dozens upon dozens of complaints directed at Snyder and members of the front office. Snyder refused to give up his majority stake and as a result the NFL stepped in, purchase minority shares from Robert Rothman, Dwight Schar, and Frederick Smith, then completed the unprecedented buyout of an undisclosed amount, which many speculate was well above market value.

The first steps taken by the NFL then began with a complete overall of the image of the team. No longer will it be called the Redskins as the team finally drops the moniker after years and years of complaints. Instead, the team will virtually have no name heading into the offseason as it has instead adopted Football Team, for the time being. The league is in no rush to fully rebrand the team, though it won't stop fans and graphic designers around Washington from pitching their ideas.

The next step was to rebuild the front office, starting from the top the team hired former player Jason Wright as team president, and super-star GM Sonny Weaver Jr. as GM. Wright, the former running back, had a 7-year career in the league, playing for the 49ers, Falcons, Browns, and Cardinals. He served as a team captain and NFLPA rep during his time in Arizona. Sonny Weaver Jr., a hot-shot GM who has been out of the game since 2015, returns after a 5-year hiatus and has to hit the ground running as not only does he need to gear up for Free Agency, and the Draft, but he needs to find the team's next head coach after Snyder had Gruden relieved mid-season and the team released its coaching staff during the ownership transfer.

Top candidates at the head coaching spot include Robert Saleh (49ers DC), Josh McDaniels (NE OC), Ron Rivera (former CAR HC), Nick Sirianni (IND OC), Dave Toub (KC STC), Matt Rhule (Baylor HC), Dan Mullen (Florida HC), Don Martindale (BAL DC), and the fiery Coach Penn (former CLE HC), who has a history working with Weaver Jr.

Washington has a long road ahead of it and picking the right coach is vitale in the team's resurgence.

WAS signs former CLE RBC Coach Penn

                        Weaver Bets On Penn

Landover, MD - The Washington Football Team has found its next head coach, in a bit of a controversial hire, bringing in the former Cleveland RBs coach in Coach Penn. Penn, who was fired from the Browns staff this offseason, along with others during the Stefanski hire, reunites with GM Sony Weaver Jr., who he worked with during their young hot-shot days in Dallas in the 90s. Penn is a run-first coach and will likely try to build his offense around this philosophy, if Weaver allows it.

Up next for the team is Free Agency. With RB Adrian Peterson's contract expiring, Penn will want to find his running back. Melvin Gordon represents the biggest name available, but the team may wait and see if they can land their starter in the draft.

February 2020: Super Bowl and FA Preview

                          KC Reigns Supreme

Miami, FL - Patrick Mahomes led his team to a come-from-behind victory for Kansas City's second NFL championship. Trailing 20-10 at the start of the 4th, Mahomes and company scored 21 unanswered points for the win. Mahomes earned MVP performances and has now officially established himself as the future of the NFL now that he has both a league MVP and Super Bowl ring.

The Chiefs will also look to repeat next year and enter as early favorites with most of the starters ready to return for ring #2.

                          Free Agency Preview: 2020

Chris Jones, Tom Brady, and Dak Prescott headline a strong free agent class. Prescott is likely to be franchised tagged, but Jones and Brady could land on the market, though seeing Brady leaving New England seems like a reach. Other big names this year include edge rushers Jadeveon Clowney and Shaquil Barrett, defensive backs Byron Jones and Justin Simmons, as well as wide receivers Amari Cooper and AJ Green. Quarterbacks that will be changing teams include Philip Rivers and Cam Newton. The long-time Chargers signal caller won't return to LA this year, while the Panthers released the former-MVP in Newton.

                          Washington Football Team FA Preview

                          Top Targets

                          WR Amari Cooper

                          LB Jamie Collins

                          CB James Bradberry

                          DT Maliek Collins

                          RB Austin Ekeler

Landover, MD - The Football Team, which is likely to land outstanding pass rusher Chase Young in this year's draft, will still look into strengthing it's defense. Jamie Collins, James Bradberry, and Maliek Collins would go a long way in solidifying all three phases of defense. Ekeler, who enters Free Agency with his teammate Gordon, might be the cheaper of the two Chargers backs, but very well could be the more valuable one. Landing Cooper is a longshot, but stealing the divisional rival's top receiver and giving Haskins a second premier pass catcher could do wonders for the offense.

                            The 2020 Draft

                            Washington Football Team Recap

                            Landover, MD -
The Football Team entered the draft with the #2 overall selections and only a 3rd-round pick on Day 2 (having used the 2nd-rounder to move up into the 1st round last year). Coach Penn desperately wanted a running back, with no premier back on the top of the draft, and the best edge rusher, and top prospect, about to land in their laps, Washington took no time in selecting Chase Young at #2, despite several offers to trade back.

R1(2) - EDGE Chase Young, Ohio State
The top prospect in the draft and on our board, Young was an easy choice at #2.

R3(66) - RB Zack Moss, Utah
Jonathan Taylor was the top back on our board heading into the draft and seeing him fall past where are 2nd-round would have been hurt. Landing our 3rd-ranked back here helped ease that blow. Moss is not the quickest back but he's a pain for defenders to bring down. Coach Penn gets his back with this pick.

R3(100)** - EDGE Alex Highsmith, Charlotte
Highsmith went off in his final year for the 49ers. With the team sticking to a 3-4 defense this year, Highsmith represents a high-upside pick at the end of the third.

                            R5(148) - WR Antonio Gandy-Golden, Liberty
With great size and fantastic hands, Gandy-Golden, or AGG, is a great value pick here. He has a shot at early playing time as well, likely to move outside with McLaurin when Sims plays in the slot.

R5(156)* - CB Bryce Hall, Virginia
An injury turned Hall from a day one pick to a day three selection. If he can fully recover from his Achilles injury, this might be one of the steals of the draft.

                            R5(162) - LB/S Khaleke Hudson, Michigan
The versatile Hudson will likely play at the linebacker spot for us. Look for him to be used both on special teams and sub packages.

R7(216) - RB JJ Taylor, Arizona
His pedestrian 40 time, and small frame (5'5'') hurt his draft stock. But he has shown playmaking abilities and matched up with Moss can make a nice smash and dash rookie combo.

R7(229) - QB Tyler Huntley, Utah
We grabbed Moss' teammate at Utah with the final pick. Huntley has some upside and he can be an excellent scout-team quarterback in our practices.

                              Offseason Update

Landover, MD - The Washington Football Team made a surprise move with the acquisition of rookie Lynn Bowden Jr, the ''Swiss Army'' play-maker out of Kentucky. The team had originally pursued Leonard Fournette, who was released last week by Jacksonville, but the former top-5 pick opted to go with the loaded Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Sonny Weaver Jr. then worked his trade magic, acquiring Bowden, who was selected in the third-round this year and offensive tackle David Sharpe for a 2021 4th-round pick and 2021 6th-round draft pick swaps, with the higher of the two going to Las Vegas.

Weaver adds not only a solid rotational tackle, but a dynamic weapon for coach Penn, to go along with fellow rookie Zach Moss. It was reported that during the draft Washington tried to trade up for Antonio Gibson, but Tampa took him. Then once more to take Bowden before the Raiders swooped in and grabbed. Washington would later a make a deal with Las Vegas to move up and grab edge rusher Alex Highsmith out of Charlotte.

Peyton Barber will still be the lead back, with Moss looking to make plays from the running back spot while Bowden is more likely to get snaps at the wide receiver position, perhaps the QB spot as a wildcat quarterback, as he can be lethal from anywhere on the field.

                              Alex Smith Returns To Practice

2020 may have gotten off to a rough start, but a bright side to the pandemic-altered season is that Alex Smith is back on a football field. He may start season inactive, with rookie Tyler Huntley set to back up Haskins, but seeing Smith out of the practice field gives fans a lot of hope that he'll take the field when it really counts sometime this season.
