Texas | Good news, Bad news on the recruiting front

Texas learned today that four-star defensive tackle Mark Collins of Rowlett, Texas has committed to the Texas A&M Aggies over the Longhorns. Collins was highly recruited by Russell Warner and his coaching staff and was a player of high interest for the Longhorns.

The good news though out of Austin is that four-star quarterback Clayton Leake and four-star center Doug Gudino have both cut their lists down to their top three. Leake has Texas listed at #1 in front of Michigan State and Wyoming with Gudino also having the Longhorns at #1 with Wisconsin and Ohio State also still in the mix.

Texas | Two four-stars in Austin this weekend

Texas will play host to both Mikel Sutton and Elijah Smith for this weekend's game against Missouri. Sutton, a four-star safety out of Sun Lakes, Arizona is already at the top three stages with his home state team of the Sun Devils as his #1 school ahead of Texas and Arizona, so this weekends visit could prove massive for Warner and his coaching staff in the race to sign the 6-3 speedster.

Elijah Smith, a four-star corner is a late addition to the Longhorns board but that hasn't stopped Texas from rising up to sit behind Appalachian State in the race for the 6-0, 190lbs corner out of Garden City, South Carolina.

Austin, Texas -- Texas needed a big performance from all three sides of the ball if they were going to beat #20 Missouri, and they got just that. The Tigers (7-3, 6-1) came into the game off the back of a 31-30 win over Oklahoma and were 6-0 in conference play, they were also the leaders in the SEC West and whilst the 42-30 loss to the Longhorns didn't mean that Texas has knocked them off their perch, but what it did do is give the Longhorns a fighting chance to be involved in the SEC Championship Game in a few weeks time. However, that could still come down to either LSU or Missouri, and both of those two teams face off against each other next weekend.

Texas has waited all season for Le'Veon Moss to look like the same running back he did last season and what a time to do it for the junior out of Baton Rouge, LA to come alive. Moss carried the ball 30 times in the game for 166 yards and two touchdowns, his longest run of the day a 41-yard scamper saw him break three tackles and would end up setting up a Cade Klubnik to Xander Weems touchdown connection.

"The changing room is alive," Texas head coach Russell Warner said after the game. "There is music, dancing and it's just an all-around awesome atmosphere in there and the boys deserve it, the season isn't done yet but this win is massive towards the goals we set out when we came in here in the off-season."

Cade Klubnik said after the game, "it's simple, you just can't cover him" and he is right. Xander Weems is just uncoverable when Texas gets itself down into the RedZone, the true freshman again caught three touchdown passes in the win, his first breaking the Texas record he equaled in last weeks win over Texas A&M. Cade Klubnik himself had a fine day too despite a fumble and an interception. Klubnik finished the game 20-of-27 passing for 309 yards, four touchdowns, and that interception.

"It's an honor and privilege to be up there in the record books," Weems said. "You come in here with high expectations as a Texas recruit, people want you to do impossible things, well that's me, I do impossible things."

On defense, Denver Harris had himself a pair of interceptions, one he took all the way back for a touchdown, a touchdown which sparked the Longhorns offense into four out five touchdown drives, the only time Missouri could stop the Longhorns in the second and early part of the third quarter from scoring was when Johnny Walker Jr. sacked Klubnik in his own endzone for the safety.

The Takeaway: Missouri quarterback Tyler Macon became the first signal-caller to not be sacked by the Longhorns defense so far this season.

Next week, Texas (9-2, 7-2) takes another bye week ahead of their final regular-season game against Appalachian State (6-4, 5-2).

Really solid win. I always find it strange when Mizzou leads its SEC division because they'll never feel like a SEC team to me.

Weems is an absolute monster, and Klubnik has strung together a few good games lately. Can Texas get the help its need to get to Atlanta?

I am with you on the whole Mizzou and the SEC, they have always felt out of place to me also!

Weems is a beast, I really feel like I could move him to WR and he would still get open when I need him to. We need LSU to do us a favor against Mizzou for sure, but then we would have the same record as LSU and they have a win over us, so we are kind of between a rock and a hard place right now.

                      ********

AUSTIN, Texas -- The lone quarterback on the Texas recruitment board - technically speaking - is now officially a member of the Texas Longhorns program, as Rockford (MI) product Clayton Leake has committed to play football under Russell Warner in Austin.

Regarded as the nation's No. 16 quarterback and as the No. 219 player nationally, per the 247Sports Composite rankings. Leake collected offers from Texas, Michigan State, Wyoming, and Bowling Green but was also being recruited late on by both Cincinnati and Notre Dame.

Despite the offer from his home state Spartans, the Wolverines fan growing up just couldn't bring himself to play his football in East Lansing and will instead move 1,320 miles south to play his collegiate football in Austin and Leake stated that Coach Warner's interest in him played a major part in this move.

"Coach Warner came to see me play and we spoke when he was back in San Jose, he's been there since day one. His offense is a great fit for me and it will be awesome to play under a mastermind of offense." Leake told The Football Brainiacs.

Leake, originally from Ironwood, MI transferred schools as a sophomore to Rockford in better hopes of improving his recruiting stock at a more "prestigious" high school program, and it worked as Leake went from a two-star prospect all the way to a four-star prospect as a senior.

As far as Leake's on-field performance, he has gone from strength to strength in the Rams offense as a senior, completing 187-of-292 passes (64%) for 3,126 yards and 27 touchdowns en route to a 12-0 finish with his team just one more game away from a State Championship.

Now, Leake is all but set to suit up in Austin, where he’ll be much sooner than later as an early enrollee.

Leake possesses all the physical tools you want from a quarterback. The 6'2.5, 216-pound signal-caller has the ability to deliver the ball accurately at all three levels. Whilst he may struggle sometimes to fit the ball into tight windows his ability to avoid pressure and find the open receiver has been second to none so far this season.

With a 4.54 forty time, Leake is very shifty in the pocket, only three other quarterback prospects in Amos Alexander (Wisconsin), Trevor Walley (Michigan), and Mookie Emer (Hawaii) possess faster high school forty times.

When Leake arrives in Austin, he'll join a quarterback room that will include current starter Cade Klubnik, we expect Leake to instantly see playing time as a freshman whilst backing up Klubnik who is expected to return for his senior season.

I just hope he pans out, he has all the tools to be that next guy, he's a +6 gem with good running ability and a good arm, needs to improve the strength a little, but with that freshman year to work on it I think he will be good.

If he had to come in and start right away, I think I would be a little worried, just because this slider set means the quarterback takes a while to warm up and having Leake in right away could mean we'd already be down a couple scores before he warmed up.

The two seem to go hand in hand. Hopefully we can secure a couple more before the seasons end to make our signing day a little less frantic.

Editors Note: I have been back to work full time of late so that's why the updates have slowed a little. I'm hoping to get the last bye week stuff up this evening and get the App State game played also.
