LEFT - Daniel Velasco punished the Alabama defense in the 1st half with 95 yards and a touchdown, but was held to just 24 yards on 8 carries in the 2nd half as Georgia struggled to sustain drives.
CENTER - Georgia's Velasco may be leading the nation in rushing, but Bama HB Vai Fujita outshined the Bulldogs star with 145 rushing yards, on only 14 carries, and this 80 yard TD run after losing the DB in the spin cycle.
RIGHT - Two 1st half INTs kept the Bama offense from pulling away in an explosive 1st quarter, by Chase Johanssen would settle down without a turnover in the 2nd half.

Tuscaloosa, AL. - No. 16 Georgia suffered its first loss of the season Saturday night, falling to Alabama 42-28 in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide rebounded from back-to-back losses in convincing fashion, using explosive plays and a late defensive stand to secure the victory over the previously unbeaten Bulldogs.

Alabama wasted no time making a statement, scoring touchdowns of 85 and 80 yards on its first two possessions. Georgia responded with a two-yard rushing touchdown from Daniel Velasco and a 23-yard scramble by quarterback Titus Tobin to tie the game at 14 after one quarter. However, Tobin struggled in the second frame, throwing back-to-back interceptions. Georgia’s defense limited the damage, holding Alabama to a pair of 55-yard field goals by Pat Haas, but the Tide still built a 27-14 lead. Tobin rebounded with a 75-yard touchdown pass to Chuck Housler, cutting the deficit to six. A late first-half interception by Alabama quarterback Chase Johanssen gave Georgia a chance to take the lead before the break, but the Bulldogs failed to capitalize and entered halftime trailing 27-21.

The third quarter saw Alabama extend its lead as Pat Henderson punched in a five-yard rushing touchdown, followed by a successful two-point conversion. Georgia answered with a 41-yard touchdown pass from Tobin to Jon Amerson, keeping the game within reach at 35-28 heading into the final quarter.

With under five minutes to play, Georgia appeared poised to tie the game, driving deep into Alabama territory. But Tobin’s attempt to squeeze a pass over the middle was intercepted by freshman linebacker Sam Taliaferro. Alabama marched down the field on the ensuing possession, sealing the victory with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Johanssen to Amir Momah—his third touchdown grab of the game.

Tobin showcased his dual-threat ability, throwing for 313 yards and two touchdowns while adding 110 yards and a rushing score on the ground. However, his three interceptions proved costly, continuing a troubling trend for the senior quarterback, who now has 12 on the season, including six in the last two games.

“You don’t overcome three interceptions very often,” Georgia head coach Nash Savage admitted after the game. “We were able to do it last week against Louisville, but you press that luck too much, and it bites you. If we hold onto the ball at the end, I firmly believe this is a different outcome.”

The loss also had recruiting ramifications for Georgia. Four-star wide receiver Jawara Swoope, a Georgia native, committed to Alabama over the weekend after attending the game, while four-star guard Junior Jeffrey, another in-state prospect, pledged to Ohio State.

The Bulldogs (5-1) return home next week to face SEC East rival Tennessee, looking to bounce back and keep their conference championship hopes alive. Meanwhile, in the Big 12, Ball State continued its strong season with a gritty 25-20 road win over Nebraska, securing the victory with a fourth-down defensive stop in the final minutes.

LEFT - Nathan Cano burnt the Dawgs secondary for 202 yards and this 75 yard TD to pull within one score of Georgia with under 3 to play.
CENTER - Tennessee held the lead briefly at 17-14 in the 3rd Q, but after an answering touchdown to retake the lead Tennessee handed Georgia a gift on the kickoff return and Tobin quickly extended the lead to 28-17 with an 11 yard TD on the next play.
RIGHT - Tobin was looking for the killshot early in the 4th Q, but his deep pass was intercepted, leading to a Tennessee field goal.

Athens, GA. - No. 18 Georgia rebounded from last week’s loss with a hard-fought 42-34 victory over Tennessee in Athens, overcoming a resilient Volunteers squad that refused to go down quietly. The Bulldogs appeared poised to take full control early, but a key holding penalty late in the second quarter allowed Tennessee to stay within striking distance, setting the stage for a second-half shootout.

Tennessee opened the scoring with a 45-yard field goal from Raysean Swayne, but Georgia responded with a 35-yard touchdown pass from Titus Tobin to Melvin Miles. The Bulldogs extended their lead in the second quarter as Tobin connected with Jon Amerson for a 10-yard score, but the Volunteers answered right before halftime with a methodical 97-yard drive, capped by a tough 3-yard touchdown run from Enrique Cannida. What could have been a commanding 21-3 lead for Georgia instead became a tight 14-10 contest at the break.

Tennessee carried that momentum into the second half, completing the rare “double dip” by scoring on its first possession. Timmy Edmunds found Ian Power for a 15-yard touchdown pass, giving the Vols a surprising 17-14 lead. However, Georgia’s offense responded swiftly, with star running back Daniel Velasco breaking multiple tackles on a bruising 21-yard touchdown run to regain the advantage. The Bulldogs’ special teams then made a game-changing play, forcing a fumble on the ensuing kickoff. Georgia recovered at the Tennessee 11-yard line, and Tobin wasted no time, scrambling into the end zone to give the Bulldogs a sudden 28-17 lead in a matter of seconds.

Tobin’s lone mistake came late in the third quarter when he underthrew a deep pass to Amerson, resulting in an interception. Tennessee capitalized with another field goal to close the gap to 28-20. But Tobin responded in the fourth, rushing for his second touchdown of the game to restore Georgia’s two-score cushion with under three minutes remaining.

Edmunds and the Vols still had fight left, striking immediately with a 75-yard touchdown pass to Nathan Cano, who split the Georgia safeties and raced into the end zone to make it 35-27. However, Georgia quickly answered, as a defensive miscue left Dom Short wide open in the slot. Tobin audibled at the line, hitting Short in stride for a 28-yard touchdown that effectively sealed the victory. Tennessee added a late three-yard touchdown pass from Edmunds to tight end Kenya Daly, but the onside kick was recovered by the Bulldogs, allowing them to run out the clock.

Tobin finished the day with a well-balanced performance, throwing for three touchdowns while adding two more on the ground to go with 166 rushing yards, making up for his one interception. Velasco, the nation’s leading rusher, was once again dominant with 145 rushing yards, powering the Bulldogs’ offense when they needed it most.

The victory helped Georgia shake off last week’s frustrating loss to Alabama, while Tennessee suffered yet another heartbreaking defeat in Jay Sawvel’s difficult first season in Knoxville.

Off the field, Georgia finally received some good news on the recruiting trail after missing out on key targets in recent weeks. The Bulldogs landed the No. 1 overall prospect, quarterback DaShawn Salako, fending off Toledo, Florida, and Florida State for the prized recruit. Joining him in committing to Athens were five-star wide receiver Cole Soto (16th overall), four-star tackle Tim Parker (236th), and four-star free safety CJ Melvin (50th).

The Bulldogs (7-1) now turn their attention to a pivotal SEC East clash against the 7-1 Florida Gators in Jacksonville for the annual “World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party,” a game that could decide the division’s fate.

With Kuntz back at LT I slid Ty Cooke to RT to replace Damico, whos given up the most sacks (4) and is always getting beat around the edge. It helped against the Vols, but they're also 2-7 now despite all of the talent lol we'll see how we fare against Florida. They're the big test. Kentucky is ranked and at 3-1 in the conference, but neither them or Auburn (83 and 85 OVR respectively) worry me. But if Florida beats us to get the tie breaker I think they'll probably end up winning the division.

UGA HC Nash Savage Joins "The Hedge Report"

Grady Sanford: Good afternoon, Dawg Nation, and welcome to another edition of The Hedge Report, your go-to podcast from The Red & Black for all things Georgia football! Joining me today is none other than first-year head coach Nash Savage. Coach, thanks for taking the time, and congrats on an already impressive first season in Athens!

Nash Savage: Appreciate it, Grady. But let’s hold off on the congratulations until we’ve actually accomplished something—like winning a historic rivalry game, for starters.

GS: Well, Coach, this weekend would be a great time to start! I’m sure by now you’ve studied up on one of the oldest rivalries in college football?

NS: Oh, no doubt. The series technically kicked off in 1904, but the Gators like to revise history and mark it as starting in 1915 to shave off a few losses. As it stands, Georgia leads 60-48, but the Oar is in Gainesville right now.

GS: Sounds like you’ve got the history down. So, can we put you on record guaranteeing that the Oar is coming back to Athens this weekend?

NS: Negative, Ghost Rider. What I can guarantee is that we’re going to give them hell. I firmly believe we have the better program—top to bottom—but this is SEC football, and in historic rivalries, sometimes things don’t go your way, no matter what you do.

GS: Fair enough. Now, Coach, you’ve got a spotless 25-0 record in acknowledged rivalry games. Despite that, would you say this is the biggest rivalry game you’ve coached in your career?

NS: From a historical standpoint, sure. But if you ask a team like Syracuse, they’d tell you their annual matchups with West Virginia or Penn State are just as huge in their eyes. The SEC’s level of play adds to the pageantry of its rivalries, but the importance always depends on where you stand in it.

GS: Speaking of Syracuse, what do you make of their hot start as the reigning four-time National Champions?

NS: Coach Nixon has done a great job, and he inherited a heck of a team, even with the guys they lost to the NFL. Brenton (Deablo) is proving he’s the real deal, and the team is feeding off his energy. I’m sure they wish Kadin [Semonza] was still running the offense, but that’s how football works.

GS: Speaking of Kadin, have you had a chance to catch up with him since his Ball State squad marched into the JMA Dome and came away with a win?

NS: Not directly—we’re both busy in the middle of the season and on the recruiting trail—but we text regularly. He’s having the time of his life back at his alma mater. When I brought him on at Syracuse, I knew that was his ultimate goal—to give back to the community and program that believed in him.

GS: Ball State saw plenty of coaching turnover after your departure. Do you think Kadin is the guy to bring long-term stability to that program?

NS: I haven’t talked to him about his future plans, so this isn’t some inside scoop, but I’d say so. He loves being back in Muncie, and I don’t think anything could convince him to leave. As long as they keep winning, he’s a lifer.

Now, I did try to bring him down to Athens, but once the job at Ball State opened up, he told me it was something he had to do. With Coach Stoops leaving, that probably sealed his decision.

GS: You may have missed out on Kadin, but you landed an NFL legend in Hines Ward as your offensive coordinator. What’s it been like working with him?

NS: It’s been fantastic. Look, anyone would have wanted Kadin as their OC, so it’s no slight to Hines. We’re thrilled with the hire. The biggest thing is, we’ve been a run-heavy team this year—including at quarterback—which can frustrate guys who want to air it out. But Hines was a blocking receiver first and foremost, and he’s also 19th all-time in NFL receiving touchdowns. He preaches, if you want the rock, you’ve got to block. And when a guy with his résumé says that, people listen.

GS: I know you’ve got last-minute prep for the War for the Oar, but can I sneak in a quick recruiting question? You lost out on some key prospects, but after the recent signings, this class is shaping up to be elite. What’s behind the surge in interest in Athens?

NS: Same as it was at Ball State. Same as it was at Syracuse. Guys see the program, the culture, and the success we’re building and want in before it’s too late. I’ll never fault a recruit for making the best choice for themselves or their family, but if you chose another SEC school? I hope you’re ready to face the Dawgs and get mauled.

GS: Alright, last one, then we’ll let you go—I promise. DaShawn Salako is the crown jewel of this class as the No. 1 overall prospect. But some were surprised when, after his commitment, you pulled your scholarship offer to Georgia HS QB Rashaud Drango. What cemented your belief that Salako is the future of the QB position in Athens?

NS: First off, Rashaud is going to be an excellent quarterback. But here’s the thing—our vision for this offense requires a QB who can hurt defenses in multiple ways. DaShawn fits that mold perfectly. He’s an elite athlete, dangerous both inside and outside the pocket, and he has the arm talent to match.

We already have two former four-star QBs in Tory Atwell and Miles Toomer waiting in the wings behind Tobin. With other pressing needs, I wasn’t going to use more than one scholarship on a QB. DaShawn was our guy, so once he was locked in, we had to be upfront with Rashaud.

GS: Coach, I appreciate your time—looking forward to having you on The Hedge Report regularly. Now, go beat the Gators!

NS: You got it, Grady. Go Dawgs.

Gators Keep "The Oar" After Triple Overtime Victory

After running in the game tying 2PT conversion to send the game to OT, Florida opted for a quick pass to win the 3rd OT and caught Georgia by surprise to keep The Oar in Gainesville for another season.

LEFT - Daniel Velasco was a dominant force once again with three touchdowns, but on the pivotal 2PT conversion in 3OT the Dawgs opted for a fake zone jet sweep and WR Melvin Miles was tackled at the 1 yard line.
CENTER - Adrian Bias slipped behind the Dawgs defense to haul in a 55 yard TD with just 5 seconds remaining, setting up the successful 2PT try to send the game to OT.
RIGHT - It appeared the Georgia defense did just enough to stop Florida with this late INT, but the Georgia offense stalled and was forced to kick a field goal instead of putting another TD on the board to widen the lead.

Jacksonville, FL. - In a triple-overtime thriller at the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, No. 10 Georgia fell just short against No. 5 Florida, 43-41, in a game packed with dramatic momentum swings, key injuries, and clutch performances. The loss marks head coach Nash Savage’s first-ever defeat in a rivalry game, dropping his record to 25-1 in such matchups.

The Bulldogs came out strong, opening the game with a grueling 14-play, 88-yard drive that ate up nearly seven minutes of clock. Running back Daniel Velasco capped it off with a one-yard touchdown plunge, giving Georgia an early 7-0 lead. However, the offense would go ice-cold for much of the first half, failing to record another first down until the final minutes of the second quarter. During that stretch, Florida took control, as quarterback Larry Tripucka torched the Georgia secondary for three touchdown passes, including a 61-yard bomb to Caleb Stewart. Georgia’s hopes took another hit when QB Titus Tobin was briefly forced out with a shoulder strain after a sack. His replacement, redshirt freshman Tory Atwell, attempted a deep shot that was intercepted, leading to another Florida score and a 20-7 deficit.

Tobin returned on the following drive and immediately reignited the Bulldogs, converting a critical fourth-and-eight before hitting Melvin Miles for a 12-yard touchdown. A blocked extra point by Georgia kept it a one-score game, as the Bulldogs trailed 20-14 at halftime.

The second half saw Georgia’s defense rise to the occasion, sacking Tripucka twice on Florida’s opening drive. The Bulldogs responded with a 13-play march down the field, finished off by Velasco’s second one-yard touchdown run to reclaim the lead, 21-20. Tobin had a chance to extend the lead but was intercepted, though Florida failed to capitalize, punting after a quick three-and-out. Tobin bounced back with another touchdown toss to Miles, making it 28-20. Moments later, the Bulldogs forced a turnover of their own, as reserve cornerback JD Hillhouse picked off Tripucka. Georgia settled for a field goal, pushing their advantage to 31-20 with just minutes remaining.

Florida refused to go quietly. Needing two scores, head coach Mike Bloomgren opted for a field goal on fourth-and-nine rather than risking a failed conversion. The decision paid off, as the Gators defense forced a Georgia punt, giving Tripucka one last chance. Starting from their own three-yard line, Florida marched downfield with help from a 21-yard pass to Adrian Bias and a roughing-the-passer penalty. Two plays later, Tripucka found Bias again for a 55-yard touchdown. A perfectly executed option pitch on the two-point conversion tied the game, sending it to overtime.

The teams traded touchdowns in the first OT, with Velasco scoring his third of the night and Tripucka answering with a short TD pass to Bias. A defensive stand forced Florida to settle for a 50-yard field goal in the second OT, but Georgia could only manage a field goal of their own after a costly sack. That set up the decisive third overtime, where the new two-point conversion format took effect. Georgia’s attempt was sniffed out, with Miles being stopped just short of the goal line. Florida, needing just one score to win, dialed up a quick slant to Bias to complete the comeback victory.

For Georgia, the loss not only ends their perfect rivalry record under Savage but also puts their SEC Championship hopes in jeopardy. Now at 7-2, the Bulldogs will need both Kentucky and Auburn to upset Florida while winning out themselves to have a shot at the division title. Next week, Georgia will look to bounce back at home against another bitter rival, Auburn, in a must-win game.

Shame the 25-game rivalry game win streak came to an end, though it's probably best for it to do so in your first year with a rebuilding Georgia. Love the color-on-color matchup - really added another element to what was an instant classic!

Also, I forgot how much I hate the current OT rules with the two-point conversion attempts. College football had it right the first time by starting on the 25 and then forcing teams to go for two after a certain point.

Well it's sucks to end the rivalry streak, the entire move to the SEC was hopes of having battles every weekend instead of blowout wins, so mission accomplished there. Also not.winning a SEC title in year 1 also gives you something to push for next year as well. I assume that the Bulldogs could still make the playoffs if you win out. So the quest for a Natty isn't completely out of the question

It had to end eventually, but I'm glad it wasn't too an unranked team or a game where we came out flat. It was a dog fight and exactly what you'd expect Georgia V Florida to look like.

And 100% on the OT rules. I totally forgot it was that way now, I was expecting touchdowns with a forced 2PT until it came down to it. Is what it is, in hindsight I probably should have put the ball in Velasco's hands, but eh.

Exactly. I don't mind the couple of losses and it adds extra emphasis on the late games of the season that weren't there with Syracuse in the last few seasons. Plus as you said, gives us something to build towards rather than being good right out of the gate. This team is rated 90 OVR but outside of a few players it doesn't feel like it. It may be adjusting to the new sliders, but it just feels like they don't fit what I normally do yet and it shows when we hit ruts on both sides of the ball. Once I get some of "my guys" in we should start showing the SEC what we're made of.

Currently we're still 10th so we'd make the playoffs unless there were two conference winners that were lower ranked, but thats still a ways away. Huge game in the Oldest Rivalry in College Football, then Kentucky, then GTech to close out the season with another rivalry.

LEFT - LBs Pat Lovell and Caleb Keene meeting at Auburn's QB after the go-ahead score ensuring the Tigers would have that much farther to march to win the game.
CENTER - WR Logan Popek gave CB Logan Baldridge the business all afternoon with this 24 yard go-ahead score being the icing on the cake.
RIGHT - Melvin Miles spinning between two defenders to give Georgia their 1st lead of the game with 5:49 remaining.

Athens, GA. - Georgia found itself in a battle against Auburn but managed to escape with a thrilling 31-27 victory in Athens, keeping its SEC Championship Game hopes alive. After last week’s overtime battle, Georgia head coach Nash Savage made it clear he wanted to avoid another extra-period thriller, and his team played with that urgency down the stretch.

The Tigers struck first with a Brayden Muti 3-yard touchdown run in the opening quarter, setting the tone for a back-and-forth affair. Georgia responded in the second quarter with a Daniel Velasco 4-yard touchdown run, but Auburn’s Seth Matakevich knocked through a 31-yard field goal to briefly regain the lead. A 26-yard field goal from Quincey Toone tied the game at 10 apiece heading into halftime, with both teams nearly identical in total yardage—Auburn at 202 yards and Georgia at 174.

The third quarter saw each team trade touchdowns, with Auburn’s Delonte Ausbon punching in a 1-yard score before Georgia’s Rudy Gaskin answered with a 14-yard run. Auburn regained the lead in the fourth with another Matakevich field goal, but Georgia finally took its first lead of the game when Titus Tobin connected with Melvin Miles for a 7-yard touchdown. Auburn, unwilling to back down, responded with a stunning 24-yard touchdown pass from Bernie Meeks to Logan Popek after Georgia’s defensive call left Popek in single coverage—a matchup he had dominated all day.

With just 1:26 left on the clock, Georgia needed a game-winning drive. Despite four drops on the final possession, the Bulldogs methodically moved down the field, converting a crucial 4th-and-4 at the Auburn 24 when Tobin found freshman Sam Mangold for 8 yards. Two plays later, Tobin hit Miles for 12 yards, setting up Velasco for the game-winning 4-yard touchdown run, as the senior bulldozed through three Auburn defenders to deliver the final blow with only 31 seconds remaining.

“We went to overtime last week in a rivalry game, and I didn’t want to take that risk again,” Georgia head coach Nash Savage said postgame. “We moved the ball well, and I trusted our guys to go win it right there.”

Velasco, who played his final game at Sanford Stadium, reflected on the moment: “I’m still taking it in. They whooped us last year, and I wanted to get this win for my teammates and these fans.”

Georgia’s victory became even more significant minutes later when Kentucky upset Florida 29-27, pulling the Bulldogs into a first-place tie in the SEC Southeast. Now, Georgia’s fate hinges on Auburn. If the Tigers can upset Florida next week, the Bulldogs will control their destiny with a win over Kentucky. Meanwhile, in the Big 12, Ball State held off Kansas 35-28 to remain unbeaten at 10-0, though the Cardinals still face tough tests against Arkansas and Iowa State with the division title on the line.
