Re: From The Shadows | The Rise Of "Nitro" Nash Savage (CFB25)

Savage & Georgia Are Top Dawgs In Recruiting

Athens, GA. - The Georgia Bulldogs may have only graduated 13 players from this year’s roster, but with eight additional scholarships available, they made every one count. Georgia landed 26 in-season commitments and added five more players via the transfer portal—bolstering their talent pool and signaling that the Bulldogs are gunning for a serious run in 2034.

Notably, all five of Georgia’s portal additions play on the defensive side of the ball—four of them at cornerback—underscoring a clear focus on shoring up a secondary that struggled at times throughout the season.

“It’s no secret our back end was suspect last season,” admitted head coach Nash Savage. “No one likes seeing an opposing QB hang 400-plus yards on them—win or not—and that happened way too often. We’ve got a lot of high-end players coming in, and we’re confident we can shore up that aspect for what we anticipate being a very successful 2034 campaign.”

Analysts have taken note of Georgia’s defensive emphasis—18 of their 31 recruits play defense—but for many Bulldog fans, all eyes are on DaShawn Salako, the No. 1 overall prospect in the class. Salako’s commitment created buzz nationwide, with many wondering if he’ll follow a similar trajectory to Immanuel Hendrix, the program-changing star that Savage recruited to Syracuse and guided to three consecutive national championships.

“We love DaShawn and his skill set—no doubt about it,” said Savage. “But if you put those kinds of expectations on a 19-year-old kid, that’s asking too much. We’re running a different offense down here in Athens, more conventional and QB-run focused, so while I think DaShawn is going to thrive, he’s not going to be the same kind of player Immanuel was.”

Regardless of what next season holds, one thing is clear: whatever Coach Savage is building in Athens, elite talent is buying in.

Meanwhile, it seems Savage’s former protégé, Kadin Semonza, was taking notes. In his first full recruiting class as head coach at Ball State, Semonza pulled off what many are calling the best class in program history—finishing second only to Savage’s Bulldogs in the national rankings.

Ball State already proved their defensive depth in last year’s playoff run, dominating despite missing six Day 1 starters. And now, the rich get richer. The Cardinals signed the No. 2 overall prospect, defensive end Amari Hay, and of the 20 total recruits, 10 more are on the defensive side of the ball.

Between Coach Savage (10) and Coach Semonza (8), the two combined to land nearly 20% of the nation’s top 100 recruits—an astounding stat that signals an ongoing chess match between the former colleagues. While Savage and Semonza have yet to meet on the gridiron, they’re already locked in a recruiting battle that could shape college football for years to come.

As one chapter of their shared history ends, another begins—and all signs point toward an eventual collision between Athens and Muncie.

                    Georgia Bulldogs 2034 Season Preview

Athens, GA. - After an impressive turnaround in Year 1 under head coach Nash Savage—improving from 4-8 to 11-3—the Georgia Bulldogs are no longer flying under the radar. But for the five-time National Champion coach, last season’s progress was merely the beginning.

“We’re coming back for everything,” Savage declared ahead of G-Day. “Rivalry games, SEC Championship, National Title. It doesn’t matter who lines up in front of us—when push comes to shove, we’ll come out on top.”

Savage’s message is clear: Georgia is hunting championships.

The Bulldogs’ most glaring flaw last season—pass defense—has been addressed head-on. After Florida’s Larry Tripucka torched Georgia twice late in the year, Savage made revamping the secondary his top offseason priority. All five transfer additions came on the defensive side, with four being cornerbacks.

“We can’t get pressure if the quarterback has wide-open targets,” said former Texas A&M corner Oscar Allen, expected to start alongside fellow newcomers. “Our focus this offseason has been on communication and unity—when the lights come on, we’ll be ready.”

Freshman strong safety Cory Lane joins the revamped secondary, while the rest of the defense remains largely intact. Ronnie Momah and George Droogsma anchor the defensive line, with Josh Johns stepping into a full-time role at defensive tackle. At linebacker, Nico Parra and Pat Lovell return as disruptive forces. Although Bednarik winner Hayden Calloway is off to the NFL, Georgia is confident in Ronnie Fritz to fill the void, supported by a deep group that includes Koren Kenyon, Casey Keene, and promising freshman Joel Bada—who is expected to redshirt unless injuries dictate otherwise.

Offensively, all eyes are on the quarterback battle. With Titus Tobin moving on, the door is wide open. While redshirt sophomore Tory Atwell is the presumed frontrunner, his limited action last year did little to lock up the job.

Enter Miles Toomer and five-star phenom DaShawn Salanko—the No. 1 overall prospect in the country.

“Yes, we’ve got a QB competition heading into G-Day and Week 0,” confirmed Savage.

Offensive coordinator Hines Ward broke down the race: “TA’s got the biggest arm, Salanko’s the most athletic—his scrambling ability is unreal—and Miles is the hybrid. Not quite as strong an arm as TA, not as quick as Salanko, but balanced.”

It’s a true three-way race heading into Week 0’s matchup with Kennesaw State, where all three are expected to get snaps before things heat up.

After the opener, Georgia’s path doesn’t get any easier. They’ll face rival Clemson in the Duke’s Mayo Classic in Week 1, followed by a trip to Miami to face the Hurricanes at Hard Rock Stadium. SEC play begins with Ole Miss, but the real tests come later.

Week 9 brings Alabama to Athens, and one weeks later, Georgia heads to Jacksonville to face longtime rival Florida—a team Savage has yet to beat in his time with the Bulldogs.

With a rebuilt secondary, a fierce front seven, and a quarterback competition that could define the season, Georgia enters 2034 with sky-high expectations. And if Savage’s words are any indication, this team won’t settle for anything less than a national title.

2034 Ball State Cardinals Season Preview

Muncie, IN. - The Ball State Cardinals have reclaimed the college football throne—and this time, their king isn’t going anywhere. In just his first season at the helm, Kadin Semonza delivered a perfect 16-0 campaign capped off with a national championship, putting Ball State back atop the sport for the first time since 2027.

But as Semonza prepares for Year 2 in Muncie, he’s making one thing clear: the celebration is over.

“We celebrated for a while, but last season is over,” Semonza said ahead of the Cardinals’ spring game. “We’re all starting 0-0. If we walk into 2034 thinking our past success will carry us, we’re in for a rude awakening.”

Despite the continuity on the sidelines, the 2034 squad finds itself in a familiar situation. Much like the 2028 team that followed Ball State’s previous title run, this group is entering the new season without a clear answer at quarterback and a massive hole left by a record-setting offensive playmaker.

Graduating senior Taylor Beckner leaves behind a complex legacy—two national title appearances and one ring—but his departure sets the stage for a fierce battle under center. The Cardinals have no shortage of talent in the QB room, but Semonza has yet to crown his successor.

“Emeka [Kikaha] is probably the frontrunner right now, but Juan Franco’s been lights out in offseason workouts,” Semonza explained. “Manny [Livings] and Konrad [Silverman] are both pushing hard too. It’s a deep room, and that’s a good problem to have.”

Still, he admitted that building around an undefined quarterback can complicate spring installations. “You want to tailor your offense around your starter—not the other way around. And when you’ve got four different styles in that room, it presents some unique challenges.”

While the quarterback race plays out, Ball State’s defense provides a rock-solid foundation. Arguably the best unit in the country, the Cardinals dominated the postseason despite being down six starters—and return all but three from that group.

Only CBs Prince Beach and Joshua Fenderson, along with free safety Cam Gesicki (who has since shifted to cornerback), have moved on, leaving the core of an elite defense intact. Expectations are sky-high, and with the depth and cohesion this unit showed during last year’s title run, it’s easy to see why.

The Cardinals won’t have the luxury of easing into the new season. Week 1 brings a top-15 showdown in Muncie against the 12th-ranked Oregon Ducks. From there, Ball State jumps into a tough early schedule featuring former MAC rivals Northern Illinois and Miami University—with a high-profile trip to Austin to face Texas sandwiched in between.

As has become the norm in Big 12 play, the late-season slate looms large. Matchups against Arkansas and Iowa State are expected to carry major implications in the Big 12 Championship race.

Ball State may have reached the mountaintop in 2033, but as Semonza knows well, staying there takes just as much fire—and a bit of quarterback clarity. Still, with one of the most dominant defenses in the country and a culture that’s clearly bought in, don’t be surprised if the Cardinals are right back in the national spotlight come December.

Doesn't shock me to see Georgia and Ball State in the Top-5 for recruiting, but it's cool to see Syracuse still having success and landing some 5* without Coach Savage..

I'm interested to see how they progress without Savage at the helm. They were holding there own during the regular season, then two duds against the Virginia's left me concerned. They rebounded well. Nixon should have them in the ACC CCG and playoff every year, but unless they can keep developing the talent as the guys I brought in leave they'll head off. But their prestige is a 5* when I left, so long as they keep pace they should be able to keep churning out top end talent.

I'm having Kadin follow the same coaching trajectory as Savage, with no points in recruiting abilities. Even though we both finished 1 and 2, we lost a couple of key recruits and the ones we did sign weren't run away commitments by any means. Even Salanko was down to three teams that had a shot in the end, weirdly Toledo and Cincinnati were the other two?

                            Georgia Bulldogs 2034 Recruiting Preview

Athens, GA. - The Georgia Bulldogs head into the 2034 recruiting cycle with 18 scholarships available with the upcoming graduation of several key players — most notably five starters across the offensive and defensive lines. As a result, both trenches are expected to be a primary focus for head coach Nash Savage and his staff on the recruiting trail.

In addition to reinforcing the line of scrimmage, Savage is expected to continue targeting high-upside talent at linebacker, cornerback, and wide receiver, positions that are essential to the aggressive, balanced scheme he continues to refine in Athens — one that echoes the dominance of his former Syracuse dynasty.

Currently, Georgia has seven 5-star prospects on their recruiting board, though they’re projected to land no more than four.

“We like to diversify our talent pool. Five-star prospects are great, but not every one pans out,” Savage said in a post on X. “We scout extremely well, and I’m confident that whoever joins us from this class will help carry on the standard of excellence we’re building here at Georgia.”

*Editors note* Forgot about my house rule of limiting my 5* recruits last season and went a little crazy. Since 5 was the high number last season, I can't exceed four this season.**

                            Ball State 2034 Recruiting

Muncie, IN. - With 16 scholarships set to open next spring, Ball State’s 2034 recruiting cycle will be centered around reloading a defense that is poised to lose significant veteran leadership. The Cardinals are set to graduate their entire defensive line, both starting outside linebackers, and three starting cornerbacks — making this cycle critical for maintaining the unit’s elite standard.

“We’re always looking to improve our depth,” said head coach Kadin Semonza, “but without a doubt, defense will be the primary focus this cycle with so many high-caliber players preparing for their final season in Muncie.”

Ball State enters the cycle with five 5-star prospects on their board — all on the defensive side of the ball — and currently ranks in the top three for each of them. The Cardinals continue to thrive as a premier destination for top-tier talent under Semonza’s leadership, with no signs of slowing down.

LEFT - Kennesaw State gave their interstate rival their best shot, taking the lead in the 4th Q with this 44 yard strike.
CENTER - Cole Soto was a track star in HS and showcased that speed on Saturday with three touchdowns, including this 56 yard dash late in the 2nd Q.
RIGHT - Tory Atwell didn't look comfortable at all in his brief showing on Saturday, with this wobbling pass being intercepted on what would be his last throw of the game.

Athens, GA. - It wasn’t pretty, but #3 Georgia managed to escape a stunning Week 0 upset bid by Kennesaw State with a 38-24 victory at Sanford Stadium. In a game where the Bulldogs trailed on two separate occasions, redshirt freshman quarterback Miles Toomer emerged as the hero, throwing four touchdown passes to lead Georgia to a come-from-behind win in the 2034 season opener.

The visiting Owls struck first and stunned the home crowd early, as quarterback Zach Boutte found Josh Napolitano for a 66-yard catch-and-run to set up a goal-to-go opportunity. But Georgia’s defense held strong, and KSU kicker Benji Fualema missed his first of two critical red zone field goals in the opening quarter. Georgia’s own offense sputtered early, with starting quarterback Tory Atwell throwing an interception and freshman running back Zach Gaskin fumbling on his first collegiate carry.

KSU capitalized on the Bulldogs’ mistakes, with running back Bobby Stephens punching in two short touchdowns to build a surprising 14-0 lead. With the offense stagnant and in need of a spark, head coach Nash Savage turned to Toomer in the second quarter—and the tide turned immediately.

Toomer led a scoring drive on his first possession, capped by a Quincey Toone 38-yard field goal. Moments later, Toomer connected with freshman wideout Cole Soto on an 11-yard touchdown. After a quick stop by the defense, Toomer struck again—this time hitting Soto on a crossing route that turned into a 56-yard score with just 46 seconds remaining in the half. A 27-yard punt return by Soto set up a final-second field goal from Toone, and Georgia surged into the locker room with a 20-14 lead.

Despite Toomer’s heroics, Coach Savage stuck to his pregame plan and gave true freshman DaShawn Salako the third quarter. While Salako avoided mistakes, he failed to produce explosive plays, and both teams traded field goals in a quiet frame.

Kennesaw State reclaimed the lead early in the fourth quarter on a beautifully-placed 44-yard touchdown pass from Boutte to Marvin LaFell, going ahead 24-23 with under nine minutes to play. That’s when Savage turned back to the hot hand.

“Go get ’em, kid,” Savage told Toomer—and the quarterback didn’t disappoint.

Toomer responded with a clutch drive, including a critical third-down scramble and a 46-yard touchdown bomb to Soto, who torched the defense once again. A successful two-point conversion extended the lead to 31-24.

KSU’s final effort to tie the game was turned away after a fourth down pass fell incomplete. Georgia sealed the game with an aggressive call on fourth-and-seven from the 35, and Toomer delivered his fourth touchdown—this time to tight end Lonnie Banks.

“I think we found our quarterback,” Coach Savage said postgame.

While the Bulldogs leave Week 0 undefeated, the path forward is steep. With the QB picture seemingly settled, the attention now shifts to cleaning up early-game execution before next week’s high-stakes matchup in the Duke’s Mayo Classic against rival Clemson.

“If we come out like we did tonight, we’re cooked,” Savage admitted. “But with our quarterback situation cleared up, I hope the rest of the offense settles into rhythm.”

Could have been a disastrous loss there, but nice to see Toomer take hold of the job and keep the Bulldogs from a big upset! It'll be interesting to see if he can build on that performance, or if it may be musical chairs at the position throughout the year.
