    Re: Resurrecting the Isles (EHM)

    Islanders Off-Season Update

Looking at his roster, GM Garth Snow only saw one true weakness in his lineup and that was a lack of a 2nd line center. But you know you had a bad season when most players won't even consider signing with your team. So in the preseason he went looking for one and found a willing partner in the Columbus Blue Jackets who gave up center R.J. Umberger for left winger Jon Sim, center Jeremy Colliton and defensive prospect Shane Lacroix.

Note: Preseason results and stats will be put up later.

The Canucks selected center Matt Duchene with their first round pick. We had him rated as a 4* prospect. He's a pure sniper as last season he had 61 goals and 30 assists in 73 games.

Early Cuts: LW Jason Gregoire, C Doug Rogers, RW Robin Figren, D Andrew MacDonald, D Jamie Fraser, D Jyri Niemi. All of them were sent back to the AHL with the exception of Niemi who was sent back to the Saskatoon Blades.

Final Cuts: LW Blake Comeau, LW Sergei Ogorodnikov, C Brayden Schenn, C Corey Trivino, RW Kai Kantola, D Victor Hedman, D Stefan Elliott. Comeau is actually out for the next 3 months with an injury, though he wouldn't have made it regardless. Ogorodnikov and Kantola were sent to the AHL and the rest were sent back to their respective junior teams.

          Surprises:
C Josh Bailey. The worst rated out of Schenn, Trivino and himself, he outplayed them all as well as Marc-Antoine Pouliot earning himself a spot in the opening night lineup. Hopefully he can keep his goalscoring up as it was something we were seriously lacking last season.

D Tyrell Mason. He beat out our first round draft pick Victor Hedman for this spot through his solid play both offensively and defensively. He also benefited from the fact that we can switch him in and out with Streit without having to worry about hindering his development as much.

Can't wait for Hedman to break in with you. I was doing a dynasty last year with EHM and Phoenix took Hedman, he was winning Norris trophies with a couple of years. Good job. Umberger was a nice pick up too.

Hedman was making the team through his first 3 games, but in the last 2 games his play really slipped off and Mason's picked up. If I wanted this to be a rebuilding season, Hedman would be on this team. But the goal this year is to make the playoffs and I think we've got a realistic chance to do it.

And yes, Umberger was definitely a nice pickup, he gives us a legitimate 2nd line center. We'll see how Tambellini, Blunden and Bergenheim do playing on the 2nd line with him and Hunter, if none of them step up, then we'll go out and acquire a true 2nd line left winger.

Yes he was. I'll be more than happy if he averages half of that during the season.

                          Week Recap:
-We went 1-0-1 and although the goals allowed are a bit ugly, we're scoring now which is definitely nice. And the comebacks we've made in both games is also a very good sign since we never saw it last year. Now we just have to do it for another 80 games and hope the goaltending does get a little bit better so we don't have to do it every game.

Since I'm past the preseason now, I don't have the preseason stats anymore unfortunately but with their pick (11th overall) they took center Tony Gartner, who like Duchene for Vancouver, looks to be a sniper, picking up 54 G, 22 A for 76 points in 75 games. He didn't make the Flyers this year and so far with Peterborough his stats are, 5 GP, 2 G, 3 A, 5 PTS, +6.
