Great season and very cool idea. Pavel and even the less talented Valeri were two of my favorite players.

Yeah, Pavel was my hero as a kid and Valeri was sort of kewl, although he was just a shell of his brother. Thanks for the comment!!!

                  Shots NYR 22 PIT 31

                  Pittsburgh (AP)-

The New York Rangers and surprise starter Sean Burke set the tone tonight against the Presidents Trophy winning Pittsburgh Penguins...

and well, upon second thought, they didn't set the tone at all.

The Rangers were badly out played for a majority of the evening, but were bailed out repeatedly by Sean Burke, who stopped all 31 shots thrown at him on the night.

"I was just in the zone. Its one of those things thats hard to describe. These guys lit me up a week or so ago and here I am talking to you about a shutout tonight...its a crazy game", comment Burke post-game.

The Rangers would jump out to an early lead, scoring just 45 ticks into the 1st period when a rare defensive lapse by the Pens would allow Scott Gomez to give the Rags a 1-0 lead heading into the second period.

The Pens would control the second, out shooting the Rangers 8-3, only to be stopped repeatedly by Burke again and again.

"He was great tonight...but its just game one. We know there is a lot more hockey to be played and we will focus on the next one", said Pens forward Jonathan Cheechoo, who led the squad with 7 shots.

The Pens outshot the Rangers 19-12 over the last two periods but would be buried by a Chris Drury rebound goal 8:30 into the second period.

"That goal really killed us. We were frustrated looking for the first goal and then we needed two...we can't react that way", lamented head coach Mario Lemieux.

                    Pittsburgh (AP)--

Never underate the importance of a solid third and fourth line.

Seven of the Penguins nine goals tonight would come from the third and fourth lines as Jordan Staal would headline the Pens with a 4 goal performance.

"Definitely the best game I've played this season...maybe in my life...", exclaimed Staal, who scored 25 goals for the Pens this season without a hat trick to his credit.

The Pens would take 70 minutes in the series to get their first goal, but the levee had officially broken when Sidney Crosby lit the lamp in highlight reel fashion, giving the Pens a 4-1 lead early in the second period.

"I told the boys to do nothing different. We played great last game and I knew that Burke was a bit of a fluke...we played the same and came away with good results", stated Pens head coach Mario Lemieux whose Pens have tied the series at one heading back to New York.

Easily lost in the Pens efforts was the amazing acrobatic performance of Marc-Andre Fleury, who would stop 24 of 25 shots on the night. Fleury has been phenomenal in the series so far, posting a 1.50 GAA and .936 SV%.

The Pens, in addition to Staals 4 goals, would get a pair of goals from Eric Christensen in addition to markers from Chris Kunitz, Mike Grier, and the afore mentioned goal by Sidney Crosby.

Sean Burke was pulled after just 35 minutes of play after allowing 5 goals on just 26 shots, while Lundqvist wouldn't fair much better allowing 4 markers on 20 shots in just 24 minutes.

Petr Prucha scored the lone Rangers goal on the night when he tipped a Michal Roszival point shot through the legs of Fleury to tie the game at one midway through the first period.

The series will now head to New York where the Pens hope to continue their play with the same sort of fortune as we saw this evening.

The Pittsburgh Penguins picked up where they left off in game 2 destroying the Rangers in their home barn by a score of 6-1.

The Rangers played their best hockey of the series in the 1st period, out shooting the Pens 11-6, but still came away trailing 2-0 heading in the second period. Daniel Girardi put a puck into his own net for the second straight game when he enabled a Jonathan Cheechoo rebound to get past Henrik Lundqvist 4:45 into the opening frame. Smelling blood, it would be Jordan Staal, fresh off a four goal game, who would tally just 24 seconds later on a wrister from the slot to give the Pens a quick 2-0 lead which they would take into the 2nd period.

The Pens would absolutely dominate the 2nd period, outshooting New York 18-7 while adding three goals, chasing Henrik Lundvist out of the game early midway through the second, while taking a 5-0 lead into the third. The Rags would finally get on the board when Brendan Shanahan would beat Fleury narrowing the Pens lead to four.

"We've got em where we want them. Its just time to keep doing what's brought us this far. Thats all the playoffs are about", said Sidney Crosby who contributed to the cause with a goal and two assists.

Pavel Bure would finally get on the board in the series after being held pointless through games one and two. Bure would add a pair of goals and an assist.

The Pens hope to take a 3-1 series lead when the two teams match up again in 48 hours at the Garden.

Hopefully Detroit and Florida can pull it out.

The New York Rangers and Sean Burke rebounded from a couple of blowouts with a 4-2 series-tying victory tonight at Madison Square Garden.

Brendan Shanahan would give the Rags a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals before Chris Kunitz would get the Pens on the board in the 2nd period. Jaromir Jagr would give the Rags a 3-1 lead before the period would end, despite the Pens outshooting the Rangers 15-5 in the frame.

Scott Gomez and Pavel Bure would score goals in the third as the Pens comeback effort was halted by a red hot Sean Burke who stopped 33 of 35 shots, returning to the form we saw in game one of the series in which he posted a 31 save shutout.

"It was a tough loss...we really played well, and took a loss. Once again, we'll continue doing what brought us here. Its just that simple", stated Mario Lemieux whose Pens will head back to Pittsburgh deadlocked at 2 with New York.
