FINAL - OVERTIME
COYOTES NIP WINGS IN OVERTIME
Prucha nets winner in late minute
GLENDALE, ARIZONA - The Detroit Red Wings played their first overtime game of the season but did not come out on the winning end of the contest as Petr Prucha scored with 0:56 seconds left in overtime to give the Coyotes a 4-3 win.
The Coyotes got off on the right foot during their home opener when Ray Whitney scored the first goal of the game at the 4:10 mark to give Phoenix a 1-0 lead. They extended it to a 2-0 lead when Radim Vrbata scored his 3rd goal of the season on the power play. The Wings battled backed in the period and it started with Daniel Cleary found the back of the net for his first of the year to close the gap to 2-1. The Wings would then tie the game just 0:16 later when Ruslan Salei blasted a rocket past Phoenix Goalie Ilya Brysgalov to tie the game at 2-2 after the first period of play.
The second period saw the Coyotes regain the lead when a missed pass on the Wings power play lead to a 2 on 1 the other way and Greg Campbell scored shorthanded to give Phoenix a 3-2 lead. The Wings came back on their next power play advantage thou when a goal by Tomas Holmstrom here...
Holmstrom's second of the year on the power play tied the game back up at 3-3 at the end of the second period.
Neither team would score in the third period and the game went into overtime where both teams went back and forth with good advantages and Phoenix would finally put an end to the game when Petr Prucha scored with just 0:56 left in the overtime period to give the Coyotes a 4-3 win in overtime.
The Wings now have a week off before hitting the home ice back at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit to face off with Calgary Flames on October 21st with the puck dropping at 7:30pm.

WINGS LOSE ANOTHER KEY MEMBER
Detroit shuffles roster after injury
DETROIT, MI - The Detroit Red Wings announced today that they have lost the services of Pavel Datsyuk for the next month due to a broken leg suffered during the opening minutes of the first period against the Phoenix Coyotes.
The Wings would then shuffle the line-up and roster around between them and Grand Rapids as they would call up Jamie Tardif (Left Wing) and Jordan Pearce (Goalie) and sent down to the Minors Jimmy Howard after his 2 rough starts in a row this season. Howard has allowed 9 goals in his last 2 starts and has a 1 - 2 record this season. Chris Osgood will be the number one starter now with Pearce backing him up.Comment

Re: Vipers2k9's Return to No Limits, A Hockeytown Dynasty
The funnier thing about the injury was right after the game was over and I hit the exit came back to the regular screen there were all these updates for the team that I didn't make. Howard going down to Grand Rapids floored me. I was like WTF? But then again I am playing the game with both the CPU Stragety and Human Stragety on 2 and the game seems to be even better so.Comment

Re: Vipers2k9's Return to No Limits, A Hockeytown Dynasty
The game always sends Jimmy Howard down.
Couple of tough losses, and losing Filppula and Datsyuk in the same span is karma for using the aging Red Wings ()
But seriously, no Datsyuk for a month? I will light and candle and say a pray.Comment

FINAL - SHOOTOUT
WINGS END LOSING STREAK AGAINST FLAMES
Cleary get's game winner in shoot out
DETROIT, MI - Wings returned home after losing both games of the 2 game road trip to face off with the Calgary Flames and were able to come away with a shootout win at the Joe Louis Arena tonight.
The first period saw Calgary jump out the gate early when Alex Tanguay found the lose puck and stuffed it past Chris Osgood to make it 1-0 but the Red Wings were able to tie the game up late in the period when Henrik Zetterberg netted his second of the season off a deflection from the shot of defensemen Brian Rafalski to the tie the game at 1-1 and that is how they would end the first period of play.
Neither team would score in the second period but the Red Wings would gain the upper hand at the start of the third period on this goal by the Captain...
Lidstorm would get his first of the year and the Red Wings would take a 2-1 lead early in the third. The Flames would counter that late in the third when Ales Kotallk got a one time pass from D. Penner on a 2 on 1 break out on the power play and the game would be tied heading into overtime.
Again neither team would find the net in the overtime period and the Red Wings would go to their first shoot out of the season. Neither team would find the net in the first 3 rounds but the man that tied the game would open the scoring in the shootout as Ales Kotallk put the pressure on the Wings with a goal going top shelf. The Wings though would be able to counter that when Patrick Eaves lit the lamp by firing a wrist shot just over the glove of Mikka Kiprusoff to send the shootout to round 5. After Osgood made the stop on Calgary Dustin Penner's shot it was left up to Dan Cleary to win the game and he would not disappoint the home crowd sliding the forehand shot just past the pads of Kiprusoff to win the game.
The Wings return to the ice on Saturday Night when they welcome the Anaheim Ducks back to the Joe Louis Arena.

DUCKS GET REVENGE IN OVERTIME
Wings fall flat in third and overtime
DETROIT, MI - The Detroit Red Wings looked to make it two in a row at the JLA last night but it was not ment to be as the Anaheim Ducks faught back from being 2 goals down to win in Overtime 4 - 3.
The Wings broke out early in the first period when Henrik Zetterberg deflected a Nicklas Lidstrom shot from the point past Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller for a power play goal, his 3rd of the season and the Wings led 1-0. The Wings would then extend the lead Justin Abdelkader found a loose puck on the doorstep and put it home to give the Wings a 2-0 lead after 1.
The Ducks found the scoreboard midway thru the second period when Teemu Selanne intercepted a pass and broke in all alone on Chris Osgood and fired one into the upper corner of the net to close the lead to 2-1. The Wings would answer right back....
Daniel Cleary would tip the puck past Hiller for his second goal of the season and the Wings went back up by 2 goals with a 3-1 lead after 2.
The Ducks then came storming back with 2 goals in the third to time the game up at 3-3 on goals by Ryan Getzlaf (12:32) and Teemu Selanne second of the game at with just 0:04 left in regulation to send the game into overtime.
In the overtime period it looked like the Ducks were the more fresher of the two teams as they dominated play and were able to set up Luca Sbisa for his first goal of the season on a one timer to win the game for the Ducks at 4-3.
The Wings now have 5 days off before returning the home ice to face off with the Phoenix Coyotes at the Joe Louis Arena in Downtown Detroit.

WINGS REBOUND FROM LOSS, DOWN PHOENIX
Kronwall nets first of the season to help Wings Win
DETROIT, MI - Niklas Kronwall scored just 0:39 into the Overtime period on the power play to lift the Red Wings past the Phoenix Coyotes at the Joe Louis Arena tonight.
The Wings would welcome back Jimmy Howard to the line up after a week off to rest and work on some stuff in Grand Rapids. The Wings would help him out at the start of the game when the Captain got things going for the Wings...
Nicklas Lidstrom would net his second of the year to give Detroit a 1-0 just 1:35 in to the game. The Coyotes would then make a comeback starting with Garrett Stafford drilling a one timer from the point to tie the game up at 1-1 at the 16:25 mark and that is the way the first period would end.
In the second period the Coyotes would carry the play and then take the lead on Detroit when Taylor Pyatt found the back of the net on a wrist shot from the slot to give Phoenix a 2-1 lead. The Wings would answer back on this goal by Tomas Holmstrom...
That would be Homers 3 goal of the young season and would tie the game up at 2-2. Phoenix though would capitalize on a mistake by Jimmy Howard after he thought he had made the save but the puck bounced loose and Paul Kariya would slide it home to give Phoenix a 3-2 lead after 2.
The Wings would battle hard in the third period including killing a 5 on 3 power play and the hard work looked to have paid off when Jiri Hudler redirected a shot from Niklas Kronwall but it was waived off as it was thought to be redirected with a high stick. After further review and replay booth in Toronto saw that Hudler did keep his stick just below the crossbar and the goal would count with 0:41 seconds left in regulation to tie the game up at 3-3.
The Wings would gain a power play advantage at the end of the third period and would start overtime with a full power play and took advantage of it when Niklas Kronwall was fed a pass from the returning Valtteri Filppula and rocketed a shot from the point that went just over the top of the glove of Ilya Bryzgalov to give the Wings a 4-3 victory in overtime.
The Wings now wrap up October with one last game at home against divisional rivals The Nashville Predators on Saturday Night October 30th.

WINGS TURN PREDATORS, SHUT OUT NASHVILLE
Howard gets first shut out of the year
DETROIT, MI - Jimmy Howard stopped all 28 shots that he faced tonight as the Detroit Red Wings blanked divisional rivals Nashville Predators at the Joe Louis Arena tonight.
The Wings got off to a fast start again tonight just like 2 nights ago as the Wings Valtteri Filppula thought he had scored alittle over a minute into the game but it was waived off as the Ref's thought the puck was kicked in. After further review the video it showed that the puck actually deflected off the skate of a Nashville player and the goal counted. Filppula would get his first of the year from Rafalski and Holmstrom and the Wings led 1-0.
The score would stay that way until the second period when the Wings would connect on the power play for the second game in a row on this goal by Brad Stuart....
Stuart would get his first goal of the year from Filppula and Lidstrom and the Wings would lead 2-0. The Wings would then make it 3-0 just 5 minutes later on this goal by Tomas Holmstrom...
Holmstrom would get his team leading 4th goal of the year from Zetterberg and Filppula to give the Wings a 3-0 lead after 2 periods of play.
The Wings and Predators would then play some very rough and solid hockey and while Wings goalie Jimmy Howard would come up with big saves on one end, it would be the Wings who would add one more when Kris Draper would get his first of the year from Dan Cleary and Jonathan Ericsson to put the game away as the Wings would send the home crowd home happy with a 4-0 win over Nashville.
The Wings now hit the road next week where they hit the Canadian trial starting with a rematch against the Calgary Flames at the Saddledome in Calgary on November 3rd.

MONTH IN REVIEW
DETROIT, MI - The Detroit Red Wings have finished the first full month of the 2010 - 2011 NHL season and so far are pretty much doing as expected for the season.
The Red Wings (5-2-2) are currently tied for first place in the Central Division along with the Columbus BlueJackets (6-5-0) and Defending Champions Chicago Blackhawks (6-8-0). While the Wings have ended their overtime streak that lasted 4 games the Wings say they are fortunate to be in the position that they are in right now.
"We struggled but we worked hard in October. Their were games we should have won in regulation and games we should have lost before overtime happened. It showed that our team is going to go down with out a real fight." said Chris Osgood.
The Wings now get set for a rough month of November where they will see such teams as the Edmonton Oilers (twice), Calgary Flames (twice), Minnesota, Phoenix, Colorado, St. Louis and Atlanta before finishing out the month with a back to back home series against the Columbus BlueJackets.
