Not awful. A three-way tie for first while seeing Howard back into the mix is pretty good. It's weird to see players like Datsyuk and Zetterberg higher on the scoresheet, but Datsyuk injury has a part in that. But wow, Mike Modano shows up in the first game of the season, and he's done nothing since.

CALGARY, AB - Ales Kotalik score the game winning goal with 5:01 to go in the 3rd period to give the Calgary Flames a 2-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings at the Calgary Saddledome last night.
The Wings got on the board first in the game when Todd Bertuzzi redirected a shot from Defensemen Brad Stuart past the pads of Calgary Goalie David Rautio at the 8:24 mark of the period and the Wings led the game 1-0. The power play goal would be the fourth time in as many games that they have scored on the power play.
The Flames would tie the game up in the second period when a pass off the stick of Jonathan Ericsson bounced off his stick and on to the stick of Matt Stajan who broke in all on Jimmy Howard and flipped a back hander into the net for his fourth of the year and the game was tied at 1-1.
In the third the Flames would score the eventual game winning goal on a shot from the corner that bounced off the pads of Howard and over the stick Brad Stuart where Ales Kotalik (picture above) picked it up and shot it into a wide open net with 5:01 left in regulation to give the Flames a 2-1 win here tonight.
The Wings now move on to Edmonton in hopes of winning their first game of the year on the road on November 5th.

Very tough loss to the Flames. They were beating you in faceoffs, and Rautio did a fine job in net for the Flames. Still must be tough to watch Ales Kotalik of all people score the game winning goal, but just get them back next time. And by that, I mean club Jarome Iginla in a alleyway.Comment

HUDLER TRICKS OILERS
Hudler's Hat Trick ends road losing streak
EDMONTON, AB - Jiri Hudler scored the Wings first hat trick of the season helping lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 4 - 2 win over the Edmonton Oiler and ending their road losing streak.
For the fifth straight game the Wings would open up the scoring in the first period when Jiri Hudler made this great play to Henrik Zetterberg...
Zetterberg would net his fourth of the year from Hudler and Drew Miller getting the assists and the Wings led 1-0. Edmonton would strike back though just 2:28 later when Colin Fraser would get the puck in the slot and fire one past Jimmy Howard to tie the game on 1-1 and they would stay that after 1 period of play.
In the second period it became the Jiri Hudler show against the Edmonton Oilers. It started with this goal at the 6:46 mark of the period...
Hudler first of the period and 3rd of the year from Brad Stuart & Nick Lidstrom to give the Wings a 2-1. Hudler would then strike again at the 16:33 mark with this goal to give the Wings a 3-1 lead....
Hudler would get his 4th of the year there with Tomas Holmstrom & Brad Stuart getting assists on the play. Edmonton would cut the lead back to a one goal deficit when Steve Macintyre would net his second of the season and it was 3-2 lead. Jiri Hudler then would finish off his natural hat trick in the second period after winning the face-off he would put himself in position for this redirection goal at the 19:23 mark...
Hudler would net his team leading 5th goal of the season from Nick Kronwall and Brad Stuart to give the Wings a 4-2 lead at the end of two periods.
There would be no scoring in the third period though Jimmy Howard did have to make some big saves in the period. Howard would go on to stop 29 of the 31 shots on goal tonight and would capture the 3rd star of the game.
The Wings now head to Vancouver to face off with the Western Conference leading Vancouver Canucks tomorrow night.

WINGS FALL FLAT IN VANCOUVER
Luongo makes 25 saves as Vancouver rolls
VANCOUVER, BC - The Vancouver Canucks came out and showed just why they are the number one team in the NHL right now as they flew past the Detroit Red Wings tonight 5 - 1 on the road.
The Canucks got off to a blazing start as the Sedin brothers teamed up for Vancouver's first goal of the game as Daniel fed Henrik for a one timer and the Canucks led 1-0. The Canucks extended the lead just 2 minutes later when Alexander Edler slid one home past Jimmy Howard to make it 2-0 after 1 period of play.
Vancouver was able to make it 3-0 on the wings midway thru the second period when Guillaume Desbiens intercepted a pass and fired it in over the glove hand of Howard to make it 3-0. The Wings would finally get on the board just as their 3rd power play was ending when Tomas Holmstrom was able to net this goal....
Holmstrom would get his 5th of the year from Lidstrom and Bertuzzi and the Wings trailed by 2 at 3-1 at the end of 2 periods.
That would be the only goal that Detroit would get in this game as Vancouver would get two more in the third. The first came from Mikael Samuelsson on a break-away to make it 4-1 Vancouver. Then Joel Perroult found a lose puck on the doorstep with a 1:33 left in the game to finish off the scoring and give Vancouver their 10th win of the season at 5-1.
The Wings have tomorrow off to travel back to Detroit before starting a 6 game home stand at the Joe Louis Arena starting with a match up against the Phoenix Coyotes on Monday Night, Nov. 8th.

Not capitalizing on the power-play and not winning faceoffs was your downfall for the game. Luongo was solid (as if he was playing for Team Canada against the USA), and it's tough seeing how Vancouver is the top team in the league.Comment

WINGS SUFFER FIRST HOME LOSS OF SEASON
Coyotes score early to down Wings.
DETROIT, MI - The Detroit Red Wings returned to friendly confines of the Joe Louis Arena where they had not lost a game in regulation this season and saw that streak come to an end tonight at the hands of the Phoenix Coyotes by the score of 5-3.
The Coyotes got on the board first just a 1:30 into the game when Lee Stempniak picked up a lose puck that bounced off the stick of Brian Rafalski and fired it past Goalie Chris Osgood to make it 1-0 Phoenix. The lead became 2-0 when Stempniak scored again, this time on the power play with the assists from D. Morris & S. Doan and would lead 2-0 after 1 period of play.
The Wings would get on the board in the second period as the big defensemen Niklas Kronwall scored his second of the season on this play...
The goal assisted by Brad Stuart and Kris Draper closed the game to a 2-1 lead by Phoenix after 2 periods of play.
The Coyotes were able to jump out to a 3-1 lead early in the third period when Petr Prucha scored his 7th of the year from Keith Yandle and Ray Whitney on a back hander off to the side of the goal and Phoenix lead 3-1. The Wings though would answer that goal with one of their own at the 12:01 mark when Drew Miller got his first goal of the season on this play...
Millers 1st of the year from Kronwall and Stuart brought the Wings back with one at 3-2 midway though the third period but the Coyotes would extend the lead for good just 2:38 later when Wojtek Wolski put a wrist shot past the blocker of Osgood and Phoenix led 4-2. The Coyotes would add one more goal at the 19:42 mark when Radium Vrbata put one into the empty net to make it 5-2 in favor of Phoenix. Drew Miller would add his second goal of the night and season just 0:06 later on a shot from the blue line that just got past Bryzgalov to make the final score 5-3 tonight.
The Wings will get the next 2 days off before returning to the home ice to face off with the Edmonton Oilers at the Joe Louis Arena on Thursday Night.

Datsyuk returns with 2 assists in Win
DETROIT, MI - The Red Wings welcomed back center Pavel Datsyuk to the line up tonight for their game against the Edmonton Oilers and it helped as he helped out with 2 assists in the game as the Wings became whole again and worked like a machine in their 6-3 win.
The Wings opened the scoring tonight when Drew Miller scored his 3rd goal of the season on this pass from Pavel Datsyuk to lead 1-0...
Miller's 3rd goal in 2 games gave the Wings the 1-0 lead. Edmonton would tie the game just a minute later when Alexandre Giroux fired a one timer by Jimmy Howard to tie the game at 1-1. The Wings would retake the lead midway through the first period when Nicklas Lidstrom fired one from the point that hit the crossbar and Tomas Holmstrom would deflected in to give the Wings a 2-1 lead after the first period.
The second period saw Edmonton make the comeback and it started with Ryan Whitney launching a shot from the point that blasted past Jimmy Howard and the Oilers tied the game at 2-2. The Oilers took a 3-2 lead on the Detroit when Zack Stortini scored his 2nd goal of the year from Horcroff and Brule on a shot from the slot to lead 3-2.
The Wings then went on a scoring streak of their own. It started with Tomas Holmstrom who scored his 2nd goal of the night after Henrik Zetterberg stole the puck and fed it to a wide open Holmstrom to tie the game at 3-3. The Wings retook the lead late in the 2nd when Valtteri Filppula fired a loose puck behind Khbibulin to lead 4-3.
In the third the Wings did not let up as again Pavel Datsyuk and Tomas Holmstrom hooked up again with Holmstorm finding the back of the net again for his 3 goal of the game and 8th of the season to extend the Wings lead to 5-3 late in the 3rd. The Wings would finish the scoring when Johan Franzen would put one into the empty net for his first of the year and the Wings would win 6-3.

BACK AND FORTH, COLORADO WINS IN OT
Two Power Play goals not enough for Wings
DETROIT, MI - Right Winger Chris Stewart of the Colorado Avalanche scored at the 2:56 mark of overtime tonight to help the Colorado Avalanche defeated the Wings at the Joe Louis Arena tonight.
The first period saw both teams get on the board. It started just 2:57 into the game when Matt Duchene fired a shot past the right pad of Jimmy Howard to give Colorado a 1-0 lead. The Wings would tie the game up 5:00 later when the captain Nicklas Lidstrom shot from the point flew past Colorado Goalie Peter Budaj for his 3rd of the year and the game was tied at 1-1 at the end of the first period.
The Avalanche would retake the lead in the second period when Matt Duchene would get his second goal of the game and 8th of the season on the power play with a great pass from Kyle Quincey out in front to give Colorado a 2-1 lead after 2 periods of plays.
The Wings would then light the lamp up on the power play in the third period. It started just 0:18 into the third period when Pavel Datsyuk (pictured above) scored his 2nd goal of the season on the power play to tie the game at 2-2. Colorado would again retake the lead when Right Winger Chris Stewart scored his 3rd of the season just 4:40 later to lead 3-2. That lead would not last long though as the Wings would counter that goal just over 2:00 later when Henrik Zetterberg would deflect a Nicklas Lidstrom shot from the point into the goal for the Wings second straight goal on the power play to tie the game at 3-3 and send it into overtime.
In overtime though a pass that bounced off the stick of Niklas Kronwall and onto the stick of Chris Stewart who broke in all alone and flipped it up over the glove hand at the 2:56 mark to give Colorado a 4-3 win in overtime.
