Re: Calgary Flames Be A GM: C of Red

    December Report:

December was an off month for the Flames this year as the ended the month 6-8-2. Even with the sub .500 month, the Flames are still 7th in the West and 3rd in their Division along with 11th in the NHL.

    Trade: December 1st, 2011
    D Anton Babchuk (82) + 2012 4th Round Pick (CGY) to New Jersey for D Mark Fayne (80) + 2012 2nd Round Pick (DAL)

    Feaster:
This trade was made because we want to take a defense first approach here in Calgary and we felt that Mark will help us out in our defensive zone more than Babchuk will. We wish him the best of luck in New Jersey. Adding another 2nd Round pick will allow us to strengthen our prospect pool moving forward.

No problem, and yes they are realistic. Just something about abusing the trade powers that makes a dynasty tough to follow, that's all.

          January Update – ‘AllStar Weekend’:

Mark Giordano the lone Flame at All Star Weekend

Giordano was the lone Flame at the big game in Ottawa this year and boy did he show why, 2 goals and 2 assists by the Flame D-Man and the MVP award, a lone bright spot for Giordano and the Flames as they have plummeted down the standings. The Calgary Flames have posted a bismal 2-8-1 record over the 11 game stretch to start the new year. This also marked the first month of the season that GM Feaster did not make any moves with his team. The next month before the trade deadline will either see the Flames fight back into contention for the playoffs or fall even farther from a return to the playoffs than they are. Although only out 4 points, the currently sit in 13th in the West. They are also only 10 points out of 5th place in the west. This might be the year the Flames dismiss a bunch of they higher end talent and enter a rebuild it what looks like an extremely steep uphill battle into the playoffs.

Team Record: 21-25-4 46 Points 13th in West 26th in NHL 4th in Division

Here is a look at some of the players in the final year of their contract.

          Name – Rating – Age – Salary

          O. Jokinen – 84 – 32 – 3.000M
          B. Morrison – 81 – 36 – 0.850M
          J. Tootoo – 81 – 28 – 1.300M
          T. Jackman – 80 – 29 – 0.550M
          T. Kostopoulos – 79 – 32 – 0.915M
          C. Sarich – 83 – 33 – 3.600M
          R. Ivanans – 79 – 32 – 0.600M

          RFA
          B. Comeau – 83 – 25 – 2.500M
          M. Backlund – 81 – 22 – 7.410M
          K. Ramo – 78 – 25 – 0.525M
          L. Irving – 76 – 23 – 0.800M

Obviously there are some names that most likely won’t be going anywhere. One being top goaltending prospect Leland Irving who has a high potential to be a #1 goaltender here in Calgary. The other was tough grinding winger, Jordan Tootoo.

If you look at all the trades so far this season, the Flames have done 2 things. They are slowly getting younger. This may turn into a much quicker rate if the Flames continue their losing ways. Second, is that they are starting to get tougher. The way Jay Feaster seems to like his team, it’s a hard nose style that could see the Flames do really well when it comes to the post season.

I like this dynasty, especially because you want to stay realistic and you are doing a very nice job of that so far. It's good to see that you are getting younger.

Currently, I am not really sure to be honest. I have a load of school for the next 2 days before I can spend my nice 4 day weekend getting in some more on this franchise. If I fall out of the playoff race, then I will definately be working hard come the trade deadline to get rid of them and rebuild as much as I can to make a run at the playoffs next year. I really think I should keep Kipper until Irving is ready. If it comes down to it and the playoff race is lost, I will be putting all 3 on the trade block and see what I can get for them. I really like Brett Connolly from Tampa but I don't want to steal your trade haha.

Are there any thoughts on trades that I could make for those big 3?

                  February 12th, 2012 Recap:

February saw the Flames start the month 1-4-0. This saw them plummet to 29th in the League and 14th in the Western Conference but still within 11 points of a playoff position. With just over 2 weeks until the deadline, if the Flames do not want to be sellers, they must start to burn in some wins or they could find themselves starting a full blown rebuild.

The Calgary Flames have made a trade on February 12th, 2012.

The Flames send C Olli Jokinen (84), C Ben Walter (74), and a 2012 2nd Round Pick (DAL) to the New York Islanders in exchange for young playmaking Center Josh Bailey (81), Prospect C Ryan Strome (70), and a 2012 First Round Pick (NYI).

                    Thoughts?

                      Pre-Deadline Recap:

The Flames have gone 1-5-0 since Feb 12, 2012 and are now sitting at a record of 24-33-5 and sitting dead last in the West and in the NHL. With one trade made 2 weeks before the deadline and the deadline only 2 days away. With the Flames 12 points out of a playoff spot it will be interesting to see what the Flames can do to strengthen their squad for next year.

Players rumored to be on the shopping list for the Flames to get rid of are longtime captain Jerome Iginla, Jay Bouwmeester, and star netminder Mikka Kipprusoff. Feaster stated, “Iggy is not being shopped but we are definitely listening to offers but we will not take less than what we feel he is worth. He has another year on his contract so we feel it is not necessary to move our best asset in any hurry.”

Also noted to being shopped are top 6 Left wingers Alex Tanguay and Mike Cammalleri. Cammy was brought in to help us with scoring and get back into the playoffs but that definitely failed although he is our highest point getter at 21G and 50 points through 62 games.

                          End of Season Report:

The Flames nearly climbed into the playoffs after posting a 12-4-3 record since the trade deadline. Rookies Howse and Horak provided some solid splitting second time and filled in for the long gone Cammalleri. Iginla had another solid year putting up 30 G and 70 points.

New comers Josh Bailey and defenseman Keaton Ellerby put up solid numbers in the Flames jersey to finish the season. Bailey nearly matched his best season with 34 points total, 14 of them coming since joining the Flames and Ellerby posted career highs with 5 goals and 22 assists for 27 points.

The team is looking to build over the summer and come back next year with the fire and desire they had down the stretch this season.
