    2013-2014 Block 8 Update: 42-27-11, 5th in EC
Al Montoya has never participated in the playoffs before, but will be Buffalo's starter.
    Montoya's Moment
BUFFALO, NY - The playoff spot has been clinched and now you're starting to see the depth Buffalo has in net, if only for a short time.

With just two games left the Sabres are on a four game win streak and you're seeing Ryan Miller and Mike Smith trying to perform to the best of their abilities and get the nod as the backup this playoff season.

The result is Buffalo is winning at a very key time. The recent winning streak has Buffalo not only in the mix for the Northeast Division crown, but finishing as high as second in the conference as well.

The Sabres sit a point behind Montreal with a game-in-hand on the Habs and two points behind New Jersey for the second seed. Mike Smith fueled Buffalo to a 5-2 victory over New Jersey on April 9th to keep the dream of the second seed alive.

The Sabres could also drop to as low as the eight seed if things go wrong in the last two games.

Ryan Parent Will Miss Start Of Playoffs
A pulled grown suffered against Carolina on March 18th will keep defensemen Ryan Parent out 6-8 weeks meaning he will miss the start of the playoffs. Dennis Persson will be re-called from Rochester to occupy his spot.

Buffalo Overtakes New Jersey For 2nd Seed; Kaleta Injured
BUFFALO, NY - The Sabres extended their winning streak to six games to round out the season and finally overtook the New Jersey Devils to claim the second seed in the Eastern Conference as Northeast Division Champions.

Even more impressive is the fact that three different goalies helped Buffalo to the six game win streak that clinched the divison. Al Montoya started the win streak but was sat out with five games left after Buffalo clinched a playoff spot. Ryan Miller would start three of the final five games and win them all. Miller registered a shutout in the season finale against Ottawa. Newly acquiried Mike Smith received his first two starts as a Buffalo Sabre and won both.

In that season finale against Ottawa it was not all good news. RW Patrick Kaleta left with an injury, after the game it was revealed Kaleta separated his shoulder and will miss much of the playoffs.

Vancouver Knocks Out Dallas; Winnipeg Claims Presidents' Trophy
As late as December it seemed Dallas was a lock to be apart of the 2014 Playoffs. As soon as 2014 hit though, the Stars began to slide and on the final day of the season Vancouver's 3-1 victory over Edmonton officially knocked Dallas out of the playoffs as both teams finished with 85 points. Vancouver held the tiebreak of more non-shootout wins.

Just as Dallas fell, Vancouver making it in on the last day caps and gigantic climb up the standings. For much of the first half of the season the Canucks sat last in the West but began their climb in early February.

Both defending Stanley Cup Champion Winnipeg and Los Angeles finished with 114 points but the Jets add to their trophy collection by claiming the Presidents' Trophy. The Kings will face familiar foe Vancouver in round one while on the other side of the bracket the Jets open with the New York Islanders.

Sabres Control Leafs In Game One
BUFFALO, NY - Buffalo entered the 2014 NHL Playoffs against a team that dominated them in the regular season.

Despite that many experts predicted Buffalo to win this series with relative ease. Tonight, Buffalo showed why thinking that way may be justified.

The Sabres controlled pace early on but despite that, Toronto was first to score when Nikolai Kulemin hammered home a rebound past Sabres goalie Al Montoya.

Buffalo's response didn't come until the second period but it came quick. On their first trip into the offensive zone Jason Pominville took a great feed from Thomas Vanek and deked Toronto goalie James Reimer. Reimer got a piece of the puck but not enough as the game was now tied 1-1.

Just a few minutes later it was Jason Pominville who fed Thomas Vanek, Vanek would then cut to center ice losing his defender and blast a shot past Reimer to put Buffalo up 2-1.

The leading goal scorer throughout the regular season, Tyler Ennis, was the one to put the game on ice. Winger Mike Cammalleri set up Ennis with a one timer right in front of the net early on in the third period. Ennis doesn't miss from there giving Buffalo a 3-1 victory in game one.

Reimer Comes Up Big; Leafs Knot Series
BUFFALO, NY - The Sabres are left to wonder what could have been after several near scoring chances and mistakes led to a 2-1 Toronto victory in game two.

With a 1-0 lead, Sabre Cody Hodgson had a great chance to extend the lead. Hodgson had half an empty net staring him in the face but Reimer would fully extend to get a leg pad on the puck and deny the young center. That save energized the Maple Leafs and in the second period you saw a new intensity from the Maple Leafs.

Defensemen Cody Franson would intercept a pass in the Sabres zone and blast it past Al Montoya to tie the game 1-1. Later in the second period that saw Buffalo get just three shots on net, Tyler Bozak would beat Montoya to give Toronto a 2-1 lead.

After falling behind another costly mistake kept Buffalo down on the scoreboard when fourth line winger Marcus Foligno held the puck in the zone at the blue line and rifled a pass to Luke Adam who went backhand and beat Reimer. Lost in the commotion was the refs whistle indicating the puck just slid over the blue line for an offsides call.

The series now heads to Toronto for game three.

                      Buffalo Wins Classic Game Three
TORONTO, ON - The series was on edge, just waiting to tip in favor of either the Buffalo Sabres or the Toronto Maple Leafs.

After nearly a full 60 minutes of scoreless hockey it looked like the series was going to be in favor of Toronto as Mikhail Grabvoski finally broke the scoreless deadlock with just 34 seconds left.

Thomas Vanek had other ideas, knowing it was his teams last chance Vanek broke into the Toronto zone and put everything he had behind a shot. It was another case of Reimer getting part of the shot put not enough as Vanek scored his second of the series with 13 seconds left to even the game.

Neither team would manage a shot in the last 13 seconds and the game would go to overtime.

In overtime the closest scoring chance came for Toronto when a shot trickled past Sabres goalie Al Montoya but the changed course of the puck sent the shot wide as it slowly trickled into the corner. Later in the first overtime Buffalo passed the puck around in the Toronto zone when finally Christian Ehrhoff decided to let one rip with a lot of bodies in front of goalie James Reimer. Reimer wouldn't even see the puck as it clanked off the inside of the post and into the back of the net to give Buffalo a big victory as they re-gain control of the series.

For the first 59 minutes of the most interesting thing to happen was an injury. Early in the first period Sabres defensemen Robyn Regehr took a shot to his right foot and missed the rest of the game. Fellow defensemen D Ryan Parent returned from injury for game three and not a minute too soon as it appears Buffalo will be without a key part of their defense.

Leafs Dominate To Tie Series 2-2
TORONTO, ON - No shot. No shot at all.

The Buffalo Sabres didn't stand a chance of going up 3-1 on the Toronto Maple Leafs on this night.

The Maple Leafs were faster and more physical as they intercepted passes that killed scoring chances for Buffalo and laid vicious hits that set the tone for the game.

                        They also scored, a lot.

After allowing just four goals in the first three games of the series, Buffalo goalie Al Montoya surrendered four in game four as Toronto went on two win 4-0.

Montoya gave up two quick goals just a game after coming 34 seconds away from a shutout.

Buffalo will host game five in this even series on the 26th.

Magical Minute Gives Sabres 3-2 Lead
BUFFALO, NY - The Sabres wanted to score quick so Maple Leafs goalie James Reimer didnt get in their heads and they did just that.

Joel Armia scored on his first shot of the game and quickly put Buffalo ahead 1-0.

In the second period, Mikhail Grabvoski's second of the series put Toronto on even terms at 1-1 and then former Sabre Clarke MacArthur caught a juicy rebound on his stick midway through the third and made things look bleak for the Buffalo Sabres.

Trailing 2-1 with under a minute left Joel Armia would enter the zone and look for a pass, he found Mike Cammalleri in the slot. Cammalleri lined up his shot perfectly and found the back of the net by going over James Reimer's right shoulder to ignite the crowd at HSBC Arena.

34 seconds later the roof blew off after Armia won a face off and slid the puck back to defensemen Brian Lee. Lee let a wicked slap shot go that beat Reimer and gave the Sabres a 3-2 advantage in the game and the series.
