New York Islanders sold to PS&E, Moving to Detroit

    Detroitnews.com - June 1st, 2012 - By Vic Venom

Auburn Hills, Mi - First it was the Thrashers to Winnipeg. Now the Islanders have found a new home as well.

In a press conference held today at the Palace of Auburn Hills, Palace Sports & Entertainment owner Tom Gores announced that they had purchased the rights to the New York Islanders franchise and will be moving them to Michigan for the upcoming 2012 - 2013 season.

When the news of the deal was told to the players in a closed door meeting, captain John Tavares sent out a tweet to the fans of Long Island saying "Thank you for all your support that you gave us here at the colosseum but the Islanders are no more."

New owner Tom Gores made mention to the fact that the Islanders were looking for a new place to play and when talks started it was mostly for the building but then turned into acquiring the team as well.

He then went to a board behind him covered up to revile that they had brought back the Detroit Vipers team name and logo for use with the new NHL team skating at the Palace. Gores went on to mention that their will be a new center ice and jersey logo they will see shortly when they head inside.

Mr. Gores then introduced the media to the new General Manager of the Detroit Vipers, Former head coach Rick Dudley. Dudley replaces former Islanders GM Garth Snow. He then introduced Head Coach of the Islanders and now of the Vipers Jack Capuano to the media.

The state of Michigan now has two franchises with the other located in Downtown Detroit. When asked about the other team they said "We are going to give them a run for their money, it's good to have an instate rival." joked Rick Dudley.

The Detroit Vipers will kick off the 2012 NHL Preseason on Thursday Night, September 27th at the Palace of Auburn Hills when they welcome in the Pittsburgh Penguins.

VIPERS STRIKE EARLY, HOLD OFF PENS 3 - 2.

              Detroitnews.com - September 27th, 2012 - By Vic Venom

Auburn Hills, Mi - Josh Bailey scored on the power play early in the third period tonight to help lift the Vipers past the Pittsburgh Penguins 3 - 2 at the Palace of Auburn Hills tonight.

The Vipers did something in the first most teams only dream of let alone a new franchise in the league. After Pittsburgh had the pressure going at the start of the game, John Tavares hit Kyle Okposo up the left wing boards that started a two on one with Michael Grabner and when Okposo fed Grabner it was in the back of the net. This was the Vipers first shot of the game at the 2:20 mark of the first and they led 1 - 0.

Later in the period another two on one break out happened when Michael Grabner stole the puck and broke in with John Tavares and fed him for the wrister and the Vipers led 2 - 0 and that is the way the first period would come to an end.

In the second the Penguins finally got on the board thanks to the power play when after a faceoff in the Vipers zone saw a shot get deflected by Richard Park into the net and Pittsburgh made it a 2 - 1 game after two periods of play.

The Vipers came out with a bit of jump in the skates in the third and after gain a power play after a 4 - 4 advantage, Josh Bailey was able to put home a rebound off the shot of defensemen Matt Carkner to give Detroit a 3 - 1 lead. Sidney Crosby would come back later in the period to get a power play goal off the back of Nabokov to make it 3 - 2 and that is how the game would end tonight.

The Viper now get ready for their final game preseason home game on Sunday night as they face off with the New York Rangers at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

LOL Pascal Leclaire... Cam Barker's an absolute beast, easily the funnest start-of-game FA to play with. Hopefully you pick him up, the Isles' (I mean VIPERS) D needs a stabilizing presence on the blueline.

                You completely ripped the Rangers...lol

VIPERS SIGN TWO FROM FREE AGENCY

                      Detroitnews.com - October 1st, 2012 - By Vic Venom

Auburn Hills, Mi - The Detroit Vipers announced today that they had come to an agreement with free agent defensemen Cam Barker on a 2 year deal along with a 1 year agreement on goaltending Pascal LaClaire.

The signing of the two free agents makes way for longtime Islander goaltender Rick Dipietro to be placed on the trade block and fills the open spot on the roster made with the trade of Mark Eaton to the New York Rangers.

"These moves have nothing to do with players on the roster but we felt that we had some people on this roster that we could move with a chance of opening up the cap space for future deals." said GM Rick Dudley.

Both men are expected to be with the Team and playing when the Vipers had to Philadelphia PA to take on the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday Night, October 3rd.

GIROUX NETS WINNER, VIPERS LOSE IN OT 3 - 2

                        Detroitnews.com - October 3rd, 2012 - By Vic Venom

Philadelphia, PA - Claude Giroux scored at the 2:42 mark of the overtime period to give the Philadelphia Flyers a 3 - 2 win over the Vipers on the road tonight.

It was the Flyers who would open the scoring tonight in the first period during a Viper power play, A heavy check by Chris Pronger knocked the puck lose from Andrew MacDonald and slid to the corner where Maxime Talbot picked it up and came out to the dot and fired one high over the shoulder of Pascal LaClaire to give Philadelphia a 1 - 0 lead shorthanded.

Detroit would do what was working well for them so far in the preseason and that is gaining lose pucks out in front of the net as a shot from Matt Moulson was picked up by Josh Bailey out in front of the net and fired home and the Vipers tied the game at 1 - 1 with under five minutes left in the second period.

Philadelphia would regain the lead before the end of the period as Sean Couturier would gain the slot and fire a wrist shot over the glove of LaClaire with 1:03 to go in the second and the Flyers would lead 2 - 1 after two periods of play.

Detroit would again get help from their first line offense when Mark Streit was able to help get Michael Grabner free on a breakaway and flipped it into the back of the net to tie the game at 2 - 2 early in the third period.

The game would stay tied and head to overtime where it seemed like the Vipers lost all momentum and the Flyers took advantage of it. Claude Giroux was able to get a pass from Braydon Coburn and rip it into the back of the net to give Philadelphia the 3 - 2 overtime victory tonight.

The Vipers now get set to finish off the preseason with one last game against the winless New Jersey Devils in New Jersey on October 6th.

Newark, NJ - Defensemen Lubomir Visnovsky scored 2:45 into overtime to give Detroit a 3 - 2 win over the New Jersey Devils in the final preseason game of the year.

Detroit got off to a hot start in the first period when the rookie Casey Cizikas broke up the right wing side was able to fire a wrist shot through the legs of Martin Brodeur to give Detroit an early 1 - 0 lead.

New Jersey would not let the lead last long though as 2:10 later Patrick Elias got a one timer from Dana Zubrus and fired it home to tie the game at 1 - 1 early in the first.

Detroit would not go away quietly though as Kyle Okposo chased down a free puck and was able to find captain John Tavares alone in front of the net for a one timer of their own and the Vipers led 2 - 1 and it would stay that way after one period of play.

It took til the third period for another team to score. New Jersey was able to tie the game up after a puck that was tipped off of Adam Henriques stick was able to sneak under LeClaire and onto Marek Zidlicky stick who tapped it into the net and the game was tied at 2 - 2 and headed into overtime.

Detroit would not repeat the flaws of last night though when Mark Streit chased down a puck in the Vipers zone and passed it over to Lubomir Visnovsky who skated from behind the Vipers net and down the right side and let go with a laser shot that beat brodeur under the stick side at the 2:45 mark to give Detroit a 3 - 2 win in overtime.

Detroit now starts to get ready for their inaugural season of hockey in the NHL as they first open up the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh PA against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday Night, October 12th.

Good win. What are your goals for this season? Are you going to rebuild drastically or are you a long term GM? Just curious...
