What a magical night it's been. Ronan O'Brien, the Lion of Eire, a relatively unknown fighter prior to this year, has shocked the Irish boxing community by winning the National Senior Open Heavyweight Division title. O'Brien fights out of the Ballymote Boxing Club in County Sligo. This young fighter from western Ireland began boxing just over 1 year ago, but his maturity in the ring rivals that of a life-long student of the game.
O'Brien played rugby as a school boy and harbored dreams of one day playing for his beloved Connacht rugby club in the Magner's League. However, a career-ending knee injury in secondary school crushed his dream and left O'Brien wondering what was next. That is when Declin Gallagher, O'Brien's coach, discovered the boy. His boxing talent was raw, but Gallagher knew Ronan had the gift of pugilism.
It was on the rugby pitch that O'Brien earned his moniker, The Lion. Fierce, strong, and fast, O'Brien stalked opposing players with a frightening demeanor reminiscent of a wild lion. Those same attributes are what make him so deadly in the ring.
Said O'Brien after his championship bout, "I guess the next step is to turn pro. I'm still learning this game, but there's nowhere left for me to go in amateur boxing. If it were an Olympic year, I'd love to take a crack at making the team and winning a medal, but I'm not willing to wait 3 more years for that."
We'll be following the career of this young man very closely. Perhaps the "Lion of Eire" is the Irish heavyweight the entire country has been waiting for. Only time will tell.

        Local Lad Turning Heads Abroad

Local fighter Ronan "The Lion" O'Brien is building on the promising boxing career that began right here in Ireland. O'Brien won the 2008 National Amateur Tournament in the Senior Open Heavyweight division. Since then O'Brien has been fighting as a professional in locales across the globe and has accrued an impressive record of 7 wins and no losses with all his wins coming by way of knockout.
Ring magazine listed O'Brien as one of the "Fighters To Watch in 2010," and EA Sports named O'Brien "Fighter of the Year" for 2009, "Prospect of the Year," "Heavyweight Fighter of the Year," as well as "Heavyweight Prospect of the Year."
O'Brien's trainer, Declin Gallagher, is elated with the success his fighter has acheived. "I have been training fighters for many years but I've never seen anything like this before," said Gallagher. "He has achieved more in one year than many fighters do in their whole career."
O'Brien has remained humble despite the accolades he's earned. "I'm not getting ahead of myself. I know that the fights are going to get a lot tougher as we step up in competition. Since I got a late start in boxing, I feel like there's still so much I have to learn," said O'Brien.
So what's next for the Lion of Eire? "Well, last year we fought at a hectic pace. Too many fights with no time off in between will burn a fighter out," said Declin Gallagher. "We're going to focus on spending more time in the gym this year. Ronan has performed marvelously so far, but there's still a lot of weaknesses in his game and we're gonna work on addressing those areas."
O'Brien is scheduled to fight Dilbert Thomas on March 3rd in Manila.

Ladies and Gentleman.... it's time for our main event!..... Introducing our combatants... fighting out of the red corner..... weighing in at 220 pounds with a professional record of 9 wins and 0 losses with all 9 wins coming by way of knockout.... from County Sligo, Ireland.... Ronan "The Lion" O'Brien!.... and his opponent across the ring..... fighting out of the blue corner.... weighing in at 206 pounds with a professional record of 9 wins, 7 losses and 3 draws, with 8 wins coming by way of knockout.... from Berlin, Germany.... Cy Bush!

            ******************DISCLAIMER**********************
To avoid spoilers, scroll down slowly as you read each round account.
            **************************************************

Round 1: O'Brien comes out on the attack, backing Bush up right away. Bush spends most of the round covering up and clinching O'Brien. O'Brien stuns Bush several times in the round using effective counter punches. Bush survives using fleet footwork and avoiding the dangerous right hook of the Lion.

Round 2: More of the same in round 2. O'Brien continues to push forward pacing the fight at a high level of intensity. Bush survives another flurry from the Lion after being stunned by yet another counter punch.

Round 3: O'Brien's intense pace begins to slow as he caught coming forward by several big shots from Bush. Then......
Oh what a punch from Bush! He's caught O'Brien flush on the chin! O'Brien is reeling.... Bush is unloading on O'Brien!..... he's done it! He's dropped O'Brien!..... What a turn of events this is!.... O'Brien goes down for the first time in his career!..... 1,2,3..... He's looks like he's going to recover as he comes up to one knee....4,5..... He's up at the 6 count but will he be able to survive the round?...... Bush chases O'Brien for the remainder of the round but the Lion fights on the outside to avoid the big shots of Bush. The ring of the bell ending the 3rd round is a welcome sound to O'Brien.

Round 4: O'Brien, seemingly recovered from the knockdown in the previous round, fights more cautiously looking to counter punch. Bush also looks to counter as the pace of the fight slows to a crawl. Both fighters have been hurt in the fight and neither wants to make a mistake. Then....
both men are looking to counter here. Neither man is... Oh! O'Brien just unloaded an uppercut clean to the head of Bush..... Bush goes down like a sack of bricks!.... 1,2,3,... Bush is hurt Teddy! He's hurt!... 4,5,6.... He's trying to get back to his feet but his legs aren't there yet..... 7,8,9.... Bush has made it to his feet but he's in trouble here in the 4th.... Bush is cut and bleeding over his left eye. He's going to need that worked on from his corner. Bush survives the round. Barely.

Round 5: O'Brien has regained his confidence with that knockdown in the 4th. He's looking to end this thing now. He stalks Bush around the ring looking for a hole in his defense. Bush survives the round but it's clear he hasn't fully recovered yet. The Lion is fighting as if he knows Bush is hurt. The swelling over Bush's eye is growing worse and may begin to impair his vision if he can't stop the swelling between rounds.

Round 6: Bush's corner have implored him to move his head more. He's covering up well, but he needs more head movement. The fight begins to pick up in intensity with both fighters landing some big blows. Then....
Wow that last shot by O'Brien has rocked Bush!.... He's stumbling backwards toward the ropes... O'Brien is teeing off now! A right hand to the head, now one to the body.... another to the head.... Bush goes down again..... He's down for the second time in this fight.... does he have the sense to get up... 1,2,3,4,.... Bush has not moved. I don't think he's all there.... 5,6,7... That's it! Bush has tried to get up and fallen back down! The referree has stopped the fight! It's all over! O'Brien is the winner!.....

The win improves O'Brien's record to 10(10)-0-0. He's answered a big question about himself with tonight's fight- can he fight through adversity? He came off the canvas to knock out his opponent. The Lion of Eire is climbing the ranks of the heavyweight division rapidly and this win has solidified his legitimacy as a boxer.

              The Lion Devours Another Foe

The Lion of Eire, Ronan O'Brien, won another fight last night by knocking out Emmet Fields in the second round. This was the second meeting between the two boxers. O'Brien won the first via 4th round knockout. O'Brien is now 11(11)-0-0 and ranked 21st in the world. The Lion's manager, Shelly Goldstein, said this fight was a tune-up for O'Brien as he prepares to fight Bowen Watts in Manila on April 1st. The fight should be the toughest test yet for the Lion. A win could move O'Brien into the top 20 rankings and set him up for some high profile fights.

Ladies and gentlemen....this bout is scheduled for 10 rounds of boxing action in the heavyweight division.... fighting out of the red corner.... weighing in at 220 pounds with a perfect record of 11 wins and no losses with all wins coming by way of knockout..... He's known as the Lion of Eire.... Ronan "The Lion" O'Brien!...... and his opponent across the ring fighting out of the blue corner.... weighing in at 231 pounds with a record of 16 wins, 9 losses, and 1 draw, with 3 wins coming by way of knockout.... Bowen Watts!...

                    ******************DISCLAIMER**********************
To avoid spoilers, scroll down slowly as you read each round account.
                    **************************************************

Round 1: O'Brien and Watts spend the first half of the round feeling each other out. O'Brien steals the round by landing a big counter punch to rock Watts right at the bell.

Round 2: O'Brien comes out the aggressor, sensing he hurt Watts in the first round, but Watts catches O'Brien with his hands down and stuns him with a counter punch of his own. Watts chases O'Brien for the remainder of the round as O'Brien fights hard just to stay on his feet. Watts lands several damaging punches forcing O'Brien to clinch in order to survive.

Round 3: More of the same as Watts moves forward and presses the action. O'Brien glimpses a ray of hope in the late part of the round rocking Watts with a ferrocious uppercut. Watts is backed up but weathers O'Brien's attack with solid defense.

Round 4: Back and forth action keeps the pace intense as both fighters have their moments of brilliance. Neither fighter is showing any signs of withering and this one looks like it may go to the cards.

Round 5: The action remains hectic but it is Watts' hand speed that is proving to be too much for the Lion. He seems to have no answer for the quick hands of Watts. This one is starting to look like Watts could run away with it unless O'Brien does something soon.

Round 6: O'Brien is beginning to get frustrated by the handspeed of Watts. Watts is too fast for the Lion's counter punches to land. Then....
It looks like O'Brien is starting to get tired here in the 6th.... he's gonna have to do someth... oh he just landed an HUGE uppercut that has floored Watts!...... That punch landed perfectly on the chin and I don't think Watts ever saw it!.... 1,2,3,4..... Watts hasn't moved, he's clearly out of it...... 5,6,7.... he's trying to get his legs under him to stand up but he's not going to beat the count.... 8,9,10.... that's it! the ref has counted Watts out! What a tremendous knockout!.... O'Brien was behind in this fight and he just finished it with one punch!........ what a shocking end to a great fight!.... Ronan O'Brien wins again by knockout!...

Trailing on all 3 judges' cards, the Lion comes up with a badly needed knockout to remain unbeaten. O'Brien is now 12(12)-0-0. "I knew I was trailing on the score cards, but I knew I would be able to hurt him if I could just catch up to him," said O'Brien. "He was starting to get a little too brave as the fight went on and I caught him with a perfect punch. I have to give him credit though, he fought a great fight. It was definitely the toughest fight of my career. I've never fought anyone with that much handspeed." When asked what was next for the Lion he responded, "Well we know now what we have to work on. We'll get back in the gym and try to work on our handspeed and footwork so this doesn't happen again. I don't know who we'll be fighting next, that's really up to Shelly (Goldstien)."

O'Brien Finishes Daniels With Brutal KO

Ronan "The Lion" O'Brien moved to 13(13)-0-0 with a brutal knockout of Severin Daniels last night at the State Palace Theatre in New Orleans Louisiana. After flooring Daniels in the first round, O'Brien knocked Daniels down four times in the third round before the referree finally put a stop to the carnage. The fight was the second between the two men. O'Brien won their first meeting by second round knockout.
Next up for the Lion is a stern test against 19th ranked Reggie Rice in Atlantic City on December 3rd. Rice is a heavy favorite to win the fight, but it will not be O'Brien's first experience as the underdog. "For most of my career, people have been underestimating me, so I'm used to it," said O'Brien. "It gives me motivation to train harder so I can prove them wrong. On December 3rd, we're going to see who the better fighter really is."
The fight will be on the undercard of the Pay-Per-View Event of the year. The main event features undefeated EABA heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali defending his title against the highly touted, and undefeated "Iron" Mike Tyson.

                        O'Brien vs Rice Preview

Tonight, Ronan "The Lion" O'Brien will fight Reggie Rice at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The fight is certainly the biggest of O'Brien's young career and promises also to be the toughest. Rice is a veteran fighter of 31 bouts, more than twice as many as O'Brien has fought. The gap in experience is what Rice feels will make him the victor. "He's never fought anybody on my level before. He's never even gone past the 6th round," said Rice at the pre-fight press conference. O'Brien countered this comment by saying, "Yeah, he's more experienced, but what has that experience taught him? He's lost a third of his fights. Am I supposed to be afraid of somebody who only wins 2 out of 3 fights?"
Rice snapped back quickly, "You gonna find out real quick why you should be afraid of me. You in the big leagues now chump." O'Brien responded with a laugh saying, "Big leagues? Is that what it's called when it takes you 31 fights just to get ranked 19th?" After hearing this, Rice stood up and started walking toward O'Brien pointing his finger in O'Brien's face shouting, "You think it's funny? I'll show you funny!"
Tempers flared and pushing broke out between the two fighters' entourages. The two men had to be seperated by security. Rice stormed off the platform screaming obscenities and ignoring the press' pleas to answer more questions. The stage is set for an electric showdown.

                            **************************************************

Round 1: Both men come out looking to land right off the bat. An initial flurry sees both fighters score. Then...
Oh I don't believe it!... Ronan O'Brien has been knocked down in the first minute of the fight!... This is unbelievable!... 1,2,3,4.... He's climbing back to his feet... He looks disgusted with himself for getting hit with that punch.... the question now is, does he have a clear head?.....

Round 2: O'Brien dances around the ring staying well clear of the power shots of Rice. The Lion leans on his jab to keep the onslaught of Rice at bay. O'Brien doesn't look like he's on level ground with Rice at this point in the fight. We could be in for an early stoppage.

Round 3: More of the same as the Lion fights from the outside weary of getting hurt again. Then....
It looks like the Lion is starting to get back into the flow of this fight after being.... Oh that one landed flush!... Rice got rocked by that punch!... He could be in trouble!.... The Lion is storming forward now, throwing punch after punch!... Rice is in real trouble here... and he's gone down!.... Reggie Rice has been knocked down!.... What a turn around for the Lion!.... 1,2,3,.... he's going to get back to his feet but he's not all there yet!.....

Round 4: The fight really picks up now with both men having been on the canvas. O'Brien is landing the bigger punches, countering with ease and stunning his opponent. Rice does not back down though, he's here to fight.

Round 5: Another intense round as the fighters trade back and forth. O'Brien's punches seem to be doing more damage as Rice's left eye is beginning to swell quite badly.

Round 6: Another brilliant demonstration of counter punching put on by the Lion. Rice is stunned again but shows an iron chin by staying on his feet. He's hurt but he continues to fight back hoping to catch the Lion asleep.

Round 7: The Lion is starting to fight from the outside setting up every combo with his jab. This is something we've never seen from O'Brien before. Rice is pressing the action hard now. He's sensing the fight slipping away from him on the cards and he knows he needs to score a knockdown to get back in it.

Round 8: The two men have seemed to switch roles here as The Lion is looking like the boxer and Rice playing the part of the brawler. Then....
The Lion is owning the ring here, sticking and moving like a veteran boxer... Rice is loading up on every punch trying to catch O'Brien... O'Brien side steps and pushes Rice into the corner!... he's unloading now.... what a flurry of devastating punches landed by the Lion!.... Rice has buckled to the canvas!... he's down for the second time tonight.... can he get up?.... 1,2,3,4.... Rice is getting back to his feet, 5,6,7.... the ref is going to let this one continue but Rice doesn't look good to me.

Round 9: The Lion knows he's got this one in the bag and he's doing just enough to carry the round being certain not to get caught with any big punches. Rice is still cloudy-headed and he is showing no signs of a comeback right now. He had better come up with something soon or this one's over.

Round 10: O'Brien is looking like Muhammad Ali here, floating around the ring and using the jab effectively. There's no question about his fitness as he's looking like he could go another ten rounds. This one is going to the cards folks.

Ladies and gentlemen, the score cards are in... we have a unanimous decision!... all three judges score this bout 97-90 to the winner..... and still undefeated.... Ronan "The Lion" Obrien!.....

We caught up with the Lion afterwards....
Setanta: "What a tremendous performance you put on tonight. Did the fight go the way you expected?"
Ronan: "Actually no, it didn't. We were expecting a completely different fight, but it all worked out well for us anyway."
Setanta: "What kind of fight were you expecting?"
Ronan: "Well, we thought he was going to try to use his jab a bit more and try to fight from the outside so we trained to work on cutting down the ring and making him fight at close-quarters."
Setanta: "It seems like you ended up fighting his game and he fought yours."
Ronan: "Yeah, it did kind of play out that way. He caught me with a good shot and dropped me in the first so I had to get on my horse until I got my head cleared. Once I had control of the fight, I knew he needed to knock me out to win so I decided to play it safe and beat him from the outside, where he had no chance of hurting me again."
Setanta: "With all of the trash talk and pre-fight drama, do you still harbor a grudge against Rice?"
Ronan: "No, not really. It's all just a part of this sport. We wanted to play some mind games with him and see if we could blur his focus a bit. I've got to hand it to him, he's one tough guy. I never thought he'd be able to stand up to my punches but he took them all and kept coming forward."
Setanta: "Congratulations on the win Ronan."
Ronan: "Thanks and I'd like to say hello to all my friends, family, and countrymen watching back in Ireland. I love you guys!"
