    Frazier-O'Brien Is A Go

GoldenBoy Promotions' majority owner, Oscar De La Hoya, held a press conference today to announce the Ronan O'Brien versus Joe Frazier fight has been finalized. The announcement did not come as a shock to most people. Last week, Frazier and O'Brien exchanged some heated words at their respective press conferences. The fight pits the #1 contender, Frazier, against the #3 contender, O'Brien. The winner of the bout has been guaranteed a title shot.

Former EABC heavyweight champion Joe Frazier will likely be the favorite to win the fight despite being seven years older than O'Brien. Frazier was dethroned as EABC champion last year by current holder Mike Tyson. O'Brien is coming off an impressive victory over heavyweight legend and former EABA champ Tierny Carter in March.

The fight is certain to draw the attention of the boxing world. Both men possess tremendous punching power and a penchant for brawling. If the fight does turn into a brawl, it will favor Frazier since he has the greater punching power. If the fight is fought on the outside, O'Brien will be the better suited fighter due to a superior jab and longer reach.

        O'Brien vs Frazier

The wait is over. It's time for the fight we've all been waiting for: Ronan "The Lion" O'Brien versus "Smokin" Joe Frazier. You can forget about all the pre-fight drama. The time for call outs and insults has passed. Now it's time to put up or shut up. The stakes cannot get any higher. For O'Brien, a win today will earn him a shot at a long-coveted title shot. A loss could tarnish his career and send him plummeting in the rankings. For Frazier, this fight represents one last chance to gain back the title he lost to Mike Tyson two years ago. Who will the winner be? Will O'Brien dispose of Frazier and continue his assault of the heavyweight division, or will Smokin' Joe halt the Lion's march towards the title? Our answer is next!

Ladies and gentlemen, for the thousands in attendance and the millions watching around the world, the wait is over!......... IT'S FIGHT TIME!......... introducing to you our fighters...... in the red corner.... weighing in at 220 pounds with a professional record of 27 wins against just 2 losses and 1 draw, with 25 wins coming by way of knockout........ RONAN......... THE LION......... O'BRIEN!..... and his opponent across the ring...... fighting out of the blue corner..... weighing in at 206 pounds with a professional record of 34 wins, 5 losses and 1 draw, with 21 wins coming by way of knockout....... "SMOKIN"........ JOE....... FRAZIER!........

Round 1: Frazier comes out and immediately looks to brawl with O'Brien. O'Brien wants nothing of it and back peddles, trying to stay on the outside and use his jab. Frazier is coming forward and landing punches. O'Brien's chin is certainly going to be put to the test here tonight. O'Brien sees his best moment right at the close of the round as he stunned Frazier with a well-placed counter punch.

Round 2: More of Frazier moving forward and O'Brien back peddling. O'Brien is trying to keep frazier at bay with his jab, but Frazier is walking straight through it and doing damage to the body of O'Brien. O'Brien is going to have to find a way to keep Frazier off of him or this could be an early night for the Lion....

Frazier knows his opponent wants to fight from the outside so he's trying to bait O'Brien into standing and trading with him...... It would be a fatal move on the Lion's part to do so 'cause Frazier has superior punching power and hand speed...... Whoa! a big right hand by Frazier!..... O'Brien is stumbling backwards into the ropes!..... Frazier caught him good there!....... O'Brien is covering up trying to stave off a knockout!..... Frazier is just bombing punches through his guard now!...... O'Brien's hurt and he goes down in a hail of power shots!..... 1,2,3..... this is an electric start for Joe Frazier....... 4,5....... O'Brien is going to get back to his feet but there is a long way to go in this fight and to this point he has shown no signs of life against the powerful Frazier!......

Round 3: Could things be any worse for Ronan O'Brien? He has been knocked down in the second round and he is still clearly hurt here at the start of the third. Frazier can sense a wounded prey like a hungry shark in the water. Once he hurts you, it's only a matter of time before he'll eat you up. O'Brien is clinching and moving around the ring to avoid any further damage until he can get his head clear again. Frazier rocks him several times but the Lion stays upright. With 20 seconds to go in the round, O'Brien shocks Frazier with a perfect counter punch that stuns him and forces him to cover up. The round ends with O'Brien moving Frazier backwards. Is this a turning point in the fight?

Round 4: Frazier goes back on the attack but his eye is beginning to swell from the flurry O'Brien landed at the end of round 3. Now O'Brien is trading with Frazier. He has abandoned his tactic of fighting from the outside and using jab. Now he's just trying to stand right in front of Frazier and trade blows. He's doing damage but he's also recieving it too. Frazier is just too strong to trade with. O'Brien is playing a very dangerous game and, in this game, the loser is gonna get hurt.

Round 5: The fight picks up in intensity and the crowd comes to a permanent standing position. The fighters are giving them exactly what they came to see- a war! Both men are rocked in this round and both men are hurt, but neither man shows any signs of quitting. Frazier is doing serious damage to O'Brien through a constant body attack. The Lion's running low on stamina and he is falling way behind on the scorecards.

Round 6: Frazier is winning the fight but he is cut over the left eye and he's bleeding badly at the start of the 6th round. O'Brien hasn't looked fully himself since the knockdown in the second round and he looks like he could go at any moment. Frazier is seeking to finish this fight as soon as possible before his eye gets too bad. If it gets any worse, it could warrant a stoppage. Frazier is starting to load up on his punches, trying to take O'Brien out. O'Brien is sustaining damage but he's showing tremendous courage by hanging in there and fighting back.

Round 7: Frazier's eye has turned his entire face into a bloody mess. O'Brien smells blood now and he is countering Frazier's wild punches with superb precision. O'Brien is looking the best he's looked all fight, but one mistake will spell the end of this fight. He's still alive and fighting but, only just. If Frazier connects with one of these bombs, it's all she wrote for the Lion. Then......

O'Brien has to keep this up. He looks to be winning this round but it would be the first round of the fight I have given him. Frazier has dominated up to this point. Oh no!........ Ronan O'Brien just landed a devastating uppercut right on the chin of Frazier!.... Frazier is real trouble here!........ He's stumbling backwards and O'Brien is firing off a volley of haymakers!...... Frazier's taking some serious punishment!...... O'Brien lands another solid uppercut!....... and that one has done it!..... down goes Frazier!.... down goes Frazier!....... unbelievable!....... 1,2,3.... Frazier was easily in control of this fight and now it's been turned upside down!....... 4,5,6..... Frazier doesn't look good!.... He's hurt badly!...... 7,8..... he's trying to get up!..... 9...... he's not going to make it up!...... 10...... that's it it's over!..... Frazier couldn't beat the count!...... This is one of the greatest turn-arounds I've ever witnessed in the a boxing ring!....... The Lion was dead and buried just 2 rounds ago!..... What a shocking turn of events!.....Ronan O'Brien has knocked out Joe Frazier in the 7th round!.......

                  Lion Earns Title Shot

Ronan "The Lion" O'Brien announced this morning that he has signed on to fight EABF Heavyweight champion "Fast" Eddie Chambers. The fight is scheduled for July 7 and will be held at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall.

"I'm thrilled about the opportunity," said O'Brien at this morning's press conference. "I have to keep pinching myself and asking if this is really happening. My whole career has been about this moment. You can bet I'm going to make the most of it," added O'Brien.

O'Brien is chasing down not just a personal dream, but the dream of an entire nation. In the modern history of boxing, Ireland has never had a native son win a major world heavyweight title. When he enters the ring on July 7th, he will have the whole of Ireland in his corner, backing him all the way.

"It's exciting to see the country united like this," O'Brien said. "I'm honored to carry the banner, so to speak, for Ireland. I'm proud of my nationality and I want to win this title not just for me, but for the whole country."

                    O'Brien vs Chambers Preview

Brian: "This Saturday night is the big heavyweight title fight between Ronan "The Lion" O'Brien and "Fast" Eddie Chambers. O'Brien will challenge Chambers for his EABF Heavyweight title in Atlantic City. To get an in-depth preview of the fight we're bringing in our guest analyst, and former champion Bernard "the Executioner" Hopkins. B-Hop, how do you see this one playing out?"

Hopkins: "Well Brian, I think this is an interesting matchup. Chambers has the advantage in handspeed and he possesses tremendous footwork. O'Brien has raw punching power and he's got a knack for finishing his opponents even when he's behind. It's going to be a battle of styles. Chambers is gonna try to stay mobile and make himself a hard target for O'Brien to hit. O'Brien wants to keep the fight at close-quarters so he'll try to cut the ring off and force Chambers to fight from the inside."

Brian: "The Vegas oddsmakers have O'Brien as the favorite in this one. Do you agree with that?"

Hopkins: "Yeah, I think O'Brien is definitely the favorite to win the fight by KO, but Chambers is a crafty fighter and he'll be tough to catch."

Brian: "It's kind of hard to bet against a guy like O'Brien after seeing him come from behind to knock out Joe Frazier. I'm wondering though, if O'Brien may have exposed some holes in his game during that fight."

Hopkins: "If he fights the same way against Chambers as he did against Frazier, he'll lose. Frazier lost that fight because he tried to knock O'Brien out. He was ahead on the cards and he should have backed off in those later rounds. Especially when he got rocked a few times and busted his eye up. Had he done that, we'd be talking about Frazier vs Chambers now instead of O'Brien."

Brian: "So how should O'Brien fight this fight?"

Hopkins: "He needs to attack early on and focus on breaking down Chambers with body punches. Chambers is too quick and too agile for O'Brien to attack the head. Once O'Brien wears him down with body punches, he'll have the chance to go to the head and finish him."

Brian: "Real quick because we're out of time, what's your prediction for this one?"

Hopkins: "I'm gonna say O'Brien wins by knockout in the 8th round."

Brian: "Well you heard it here folks. Thanks to Bernard Hopkins for joining us. We'll look forward to post-fight reaction next week on Friday Night Fights."

Ladies and gentlemen, for the thousands in attendance and the millions watching around the world, the wait is over!......... LET'S.... GET... READY.... TO...... RUMBLE!.... this bout is scheduled for 12 rounds of championship boxing in the heavyweight division..... introducing our fighters...... in the red corner.... weighing in at 220 pounds with a professional record of 28 wins against just 2 losses and 1 draw, with 26 wins coming by way of knockout........ RONAN......... THE LION......... O'BRIEN!..... and his opponent in the blue corner.... weighing in at 221 pounds with a professional record of 28 wins against 8 losses and 1 draw, with 17 of his wins coming by way of knockout.... the REIGNING..... EABF...... HEAVYWEIGHT..... CHAMPION..... OF THE WORLD....... FAST..... EDDIE...... CHAMBERS!

Round 1: This fight is starting off exactly like we expected. O'Brien is coming forward, pressing the action while Chambers is moving laterally and using his jab effectively. Chambers moves in and out scoring with flurries and combinations each time. O'Brien is countering well with powerful punches, but Chambers doesn't stick around long enough for the Lion to do any real damage.

Round 2: More of the same. No real changes in either man's strategy. Both corners liked what they saw from their fighters in round 1 and asked for more of the same here in round 2.

Round 3: Chambers continues to mount up an impressive punches landed total while O'Brien continues to stalk his prey and counter with well-placed power punches. O'Brien rocks Chambers in the round and the champion's left eye is beginning to show the effects of O'Brien's power.

Round 4: More of the same in round 4. Chambers is slowly but surely picking up the pace and staying inside longer and throwing more punches in his combinations before dancing to safety. The strategy pays off when Chambers stuns O'Brien with a wicked counter uppercut.

Round 5: One-third of the fight has passed and yet no knockdowns or significant moments. Both fighters have been briefly stunned, but easily recovered fully. Chambers appears to be winning the fight due to the shear number of punches he's landing, in spite of a cut over his left eye that is growing bigger with each passing round.

Round 6: O'Brien gets the crowd on their feet with a big right hook that sends Chambers reeling backwards. Chambers presses on undaunted and finishes the round strongly.

Round 7: Halfway through and still no knockdowns. O'Brien is sensing that this fight is slipping from his grasp but he just cannot catch up to Chambers' dazzling footwork. Chambers' jab is giving O'Brien fits. He can't get inside without eating 2 or 3 jabs along the way. Chambers is moving around the ring well and using his slight reach advantage to compound the differential.

Round 8: O'Brien is running out of time to make something happen now. He's coming forward boldly but taking serious damage in doing so. Chambers rocks O'Brien at the close of the round. The Lion looks discouraged as he heads back to his corner.

Round 9: More of the same as Chambers is looking better and better as the fight moves on. O'Brien has no choice but to try to knock out Chambers now. He can't possibly catch up on the cards unless something miraculous takes place.

Round 10: Now the fight is gaining intensity as both fighters are willing to trade blows. Chambers gets the better of the exchanges but O'Brien closes the round on a high note wobbling the champ at the bell.

Round 11: Now we're into the championship rounds. O'Brien has never been here before and he is looking very tired. He's behind on the cards and and is showing no signs of life right now. Can he tap into the magic he used to knock out Joe Frazier in his last fight?.....

O'Brien is just gassed.... He needs a knockout but I don't think he's got enough left to do it.... OH!..... Chambers just dropped O'Brien with a quick hook to the jaw!..... I don't think O'Brien even saw it coming!..... 1,2,3,...... O'Brien looks beaten.... 4,5,6.... No!.... he's going to get up!.... the crowd is roaring and chanting his name but can he possibly find a way back into this fight?

Round 12: Chambers knows O'Brien is spent and he goes on the attack. O'Brien is just trying to hang on for the final bell but there's nothing left in his tank.....

Chambers is landing at will now........ O'Brien looks woozy here!..... Chambers lands again!.... and again!..... and down goes O'Brien for the second time!..... 1,2,3,4..... he's still on his back!..... he has nothing left in his legs!...... 5,6,7..... the crowd is on their feet trying to will the Lion up to his!..... 8.... He's trying to get up!..... 9...... he's stumbling around!...... 10... it's over!...... it's all over!....... this one isn't going to the cards!.... Eddie Chambers has stopped Ronan O'Brien in the 12th round!................
