Re: Mr. Second Place: An Autobiographical Tale of Alvin Allen (Fifa 13)

    “MDMA,” Theo stated.
“X?” Leo sounded unimpressed over the phone. “You’re entire plan is to over saturate the market with something that has already been done before?”
“Not exactly, uncle,” Vinny continued. “We’ve redefined the production of it. We’ve increased the half life of it by over 10% and the time it takes to metabolize into the bodies system has increased to almost instantaneously.”
“So what?” Leo continued. “Casual users that will be in Rio will be smoking cannabis. What’s the point?”
Theo continued, “We understand that. We’ve laced it with the MDMA. Pure MDMA so it won’t be lost in the burning of the cannabis. We’re doing sort of an underground marketing campaign, so to speak. We’re calling it an APP. It will revolutionize the drug game.”
“APP? Sounds intriguing, but pure MDMA is expensive to produce. You’ll price yourself right out of the market when you go to sell,” Leo said.
“Which is why we needed to control production, shipping, and distribution,” Theo continued.
“We’ve effectively cut out the middle man,” Vinny smiled, “We have the biggest cartel in Rio on our payroll. We’re all set up to get things done here.”
Leo was silent for quite some time. “Why do you need me?” Leo mused.
“Because we realize it was a mistake to cut you out,” Theo stated as he glared at Vinny. “We realize that we have a bit of a law enforcement problem and that you were helping her out.”
My heart dropped. Theo smirked and looked at me. “Yes of course we know all about Quinn, and we are holding her. Leo, we want you to stop feeding the cops intel and instead work with your nephew here to control shipment of APP across the world. The World Cup will introduce it to the party scene in Rio, and these visitors will take it back to all of their home countries. We’re about to become the hottest thing on the underground market.”
Leo spoke after a bit, “Where do I meet you?”
    “I have a warehouse…” Theo started.
    “Leo, no!” I yelled.
“Easy there, Alvin,” Theo laughed. “Looks like all your friends you thought could help you are with me now.”
I lowered my head in defeat. “Ok, Theo, what do you need?”
“I’m sure Leo would feel a lot more comfortable with you heading to scout things out first, so I’ll give you the address. Leo, I look forward to finalizing our business.”
“Ok, we’ll talk soon.” Leo hung up.
I started to leave, but Theo grabbed me short of the stairs.
“Remember, Alvin, don’t do anything crazy. I have your girl,” he smiled. “Just focus on the games and we’ll finish up this business with Leo. Once we’re all done here, you can go on your way and your obligations to me will be finished.”
“Bull!” I yelled as I pulled away from him angrily. “As long as you have Quinn, we’ll never be through. I swear Theo I will end you.”
Theo and Vinny laughed hysterically as Madam Apuzzo just watched behind those thick sunglasses giving no hint of emotion.
“Get out of here, boy,” Theo laughed. “We’ll be in touch.”

Hello and welcome to the World Cup 2014! I hope you all appreciate the blog's face lift for the upcoming tournament. I am here in Rio and I can't wait for the first matches to start for group play. Let's go ahead and dig into each group a bit further.

      Group A
We get things started with a tough group right out the gate. The Netherlands are hungry after coming so close in 2010, and leading the charge for their team is LW Robben who will look to propel their team into a group win. Honestly, any team could come away with this group. Keep an eye out for Austria as this year's sleeper to make it out of Group play.

      Group B
This year's "group of death" title belongs to them, as any combination of teams could make it to the elimination stage. The incomparable skill of Cristiano Ronaldo could take Portugal to this year's title, but they'll have to keep a sharp eye out for trouble from Uruguay who is looking to make a deep run as well. As always, the United States seems to get the short end of the stick in these tournaments, but the young team will look to compete and try to sneak into the knockout stage.

      Group C
England and Colombia should advance relatively easily out of this group. Romania surprised many by making it past qualifying this year and will look to rely on the play of the striker Marica to try to advance.

      Group D
Argentina will look to challenge for the title this year with the always dangerous Messi looking to carry his team to the championship. Belgium will look to challenge them to win the group. Hungary and New Zealand are just happy to make the trip this year.

      Group E
Defending champion Spain should win the group. The Ivory Coast will look to challenge for the top spot as Toure and company look to push deep into the knockout stage. Watch out for Bulgaria and Slovenia as both team have competed well in qualifying and will look to make some noise in group play.

      Group F
France and Mexico will look to advance, but the always pesky Norwegians will try to throw a wrench into those plans with improved play from young striker Abdellaoue. The aforementioned Mexican squad is extremely dangerous and they are my sleeper pick to make a huge run in this years title hunt.

      Group G
The question for this group will be who is number 2? Germany should win this group with little challenge, but the second spot could land to any of the three remaining teams. It should go to Korea, who have steadily built a decent squad that should carry them through to the knockout stage.

      Group H
The always talented nation of Brazil will look to take the tournament in their home country. They are widely considered to have the most talent, with names like Neymar, Hulk, and Ramires leading the way.The only concern here is age, as the team is extremely young, but the fire to win in front of your country will more than make up for that. The battle for second will be intriguing as Greece and the Czech Republic are very evenly matched. South Africa is just happy to make their second world cup.

Well that sums up the entire competition. We'll be sure to keep everyone updated on the matches and results, especially those of the United States in their quest this year.

Allen sizes up a volley finish off a corner kick

Group B play opened up today with favorites Portugal ready to take on a young feisty United States squad. The usual stars were out for Portugal with Ronaldo leading the way for his side. The Americans were led onto the pitch by Bradley as the notable absences of Tim Howard and Landon Donovan are undoubtedly felt by the team. Strangely Team USA manager Klinsmann has decided to go with Allen and Bruin as his starting strikers for the match, with experienced veteran Jozy Altidore waiting on the sidelines. The anthems were played, pleasantries were exchanged, and the match got under way.

The United States began with the ball as Allen kicked it back to Bradley. Bradley would bring the ball up with Shea on the left half of the pitch as Miguel Veloso brought pressure. A crisp pass hit Bradley just outside the box and an early shot on goal was deflected out of bounds by Pepe for the corner kick. Holden would be taking this kick. He took the kick and the ball came in extremely low on what looked like a miss hit. Unfortunately for Portugal, this caught them off guard and an opportunistic Allen volleyed the ball home for the early goal. The United States team went bonkers as they took the lead.

A reinvigorated Portuguese squad began to make their presence felt right from the restart. Ronaldo and Joao Moutinho drove right up the middle of the pitch, controlling tempo and putting the US on their heels. Ronaldo would find a cutting Nani, but he would miss wide on the one timed shot. Johnson would receive the short goal kick from Guzan, but he would handle it poorly and Nani took the ball right back. Nani made a smooth step over move that fooled everyone and sent a through ball to Joao Moutinho who would take the shot, but a massive save for Guzan kept the US on top.

Guzan would smartly clear the goal kick this time, sending it deep. Allen was on the receiving end and would head it to Holden. He would find Brek Shea up the wing again, pressing forward with pace. The cross came in to Bruin who should have shot it on the first touch. Instead he trapped the ball, giving Luis Neto time to come over and affect the shot. Bruin would put it wide and it would be Portugal ball.

The United States would win it back off the goal kick with a headed pass from Bradley to Gatt. Gatt would pull a spin move to get past Raul Meireles that pleased the fans before kicking it through to Allen. Allen would stop in the middle of the field, stalling for time while trying to find an opening. The lobbed through ball he sent would find Bruin on a well timed shot, but Rui Patricio came up huge on a diving save. The US would do nothing on the ensuing corner, and Portugal would regain possession.

Ronaldo would push the ball to Nani deep in United States territory as the first half began to draw to a close. Nani would find Raul Meireles outside the box and he would send in a wild shot that almost found the net, but another great stab by Guzan saved the day. The rebound fell to Chandler who would start the counter attack on a long ball to a streaking Shea. Shea would hit Holden, who would then find Allen in the box with one man to beat. A quick double step over got Pepe to bite, and he had no choice but to bring Allen down to prevent the 1 on 1 with the keeper. The referee would blow the whistle for the foul call and the penalty attempt. Allen would be called upon for the shot. He went to the keeper's right with his strong left foot. Rui Patricio guessed correctly, diving to his right, but the strike was to hard and too high as the Allen would put it in for the 2-0 lead. The referee would blow the whistle, ending the first half.

Ronaldo celebrates after scoring amazing goal in 82'

The second half found a resurgent Portugal team looking to come back against the youthful, cocky Americans. The game took an all Portugal turn, as Paulo Bento sent his guys forward on a furious pace. This was the type of game Ronaldo wanted to play as beautiful accurate passing helped Portugal weave through a stunned US back line. Nani would find Ronaldo all alone and he would size up a shot that was barely blocked by Chandler to bounce out of bounds. The ensuing corner kick fell to Montinho in the box, but instead of shooting he turned his back to pass the ball back out to Veloso. he tactic confused Chandler as he mistakenly hit Joao Montinho in the back of his leg. He went down in the box and the referee blew for the PK attempt for Portugal. Cristiano Ronaldo would take the shot. The rocket off his foot would head just under the crossbar and somehow bounce downward instead of back into the net. The bouncing ball was cleared by Guzan, as the US escaped Portugal's pressure to hold onto the lead.

The 75' came and went as Portugal began to run out of time. The United Staes went into a defensive posture, bringing everybody back to help against the onslaught that was the Portugal front line. Eder and Nani would both get great chances, but Guzan rebuffed both with great saves. Guzan was coming up big all game as he had an amazing 11 saves for the game.

Guzan couldn't keep it up forever though, as the massive amount of shots was draining him. The United States back line tried to hold firm and at one point just cleared the ball as deep as they could, giving up on any semblence of offense for the match. Then, in the 82', the incomparable Ronaldo took the game in his own hands. He received a pass from Nani from way outside the box. Bradley was late in coming over and Ronaldo decided to rip a shot. The ball started towards the middle of the net, but as it got closer it curled up and left. Guzan dove but there is no defense for the perfect shot. Ronaldo would run across the pitch and slide on his knees for the celebration as Portugal pulled within 1 goal.

The restart would find Allen pushing forward into the corner in an attempt to milk the clock. The experienced Portugal side was ready for this tactic, double teaming Allen up the wing as he looked to find an outlet pass. One arose as Dempsey would charge over, as he was subbed in for Holden just a bit earlier. Dempsey would connect with Bruin on a cross, but it was put just wide giving Portugal the goal kick.

With possession regained, Rui Patricio sent a shot ball to Luis Neto. The Americans pulled everyone back, awaiting the attack late in the match. Everyone knew who would be getting the ball. CR7 had US players draped all over him, but still Meireles somehow found Ronaldo running to the corner. He drew the back line his way as he effortlessly danced past Chandler. As Gonzalez came over on help defense, left back Fabio Coentrao snuck into the box. Ronaldo found him on a through pass for the one on one with Guzan. Guzan charged out with arms spread to prevent the goal as Ream converged on the Portugal man. Coentrao somehow squeak the ball out on a back heel pass to a wide open Eder who had nothing but open net in front of him. He would poke the ball in without contest as Portugal would even the match in the 87'. Portugal had come roaring back evening the match at 2-2. It would end that way as the United States goes home perplexed with only 1 point.

Even though Portugal is going to the clubhouse feeling jubilant and the United States looks defeated right now, Klinsmann has to be happy with this result. The unconventional lineup worked as the young United States felt no fear against a superior opponent in Portugal. Every team member on the US will feel they should have won this game, but this draw could be a key difference in the upcoming matches against other teams in the "group of death."

Ibrahimovic looking determined during Swedish national anthem

Group B was extremely tight heading into the second match day as all of the teams were tied. Both the United States and Sweden would look to change that as the anthems ended and play was about to begin. The Swedes were going to put this game in the hands of their star Ibrahimovic to try to convert chances. Allen, who had two goals against Portugal, would be looking for more as the United States was looking for another good result.

The game began with Sweden controlling tempo early. Sweden ran a 4-4-1-1 and pushed up both their right and left backs when they attacked. Olsson took a chance on a long shot from way back, but it was easily caught by Guzan, who would look to continue his stellar play fro the opening game. Guzan would roll it to Chandler, but a bad pass to Gatt was intercepted by the midfielder Larsson. He would send in the pass to Elm just inside the penalty area, but he would put it over the crossbar.

The game would continue in Sweden’s favor as they continued to tee off on the United States keeper. Ibrahimovic would finally get involved taking a dangerous shot off a one timed pass from Jonsson. The curling strike was barely saved by Guzan and bouced out for the corner kick. The ball comes in and Olsson tries to head it home, but another Guzan save prevents the go ahead goal.

The United States counter attacks late in the half, pushing forward with the speed of Allen. He finds newly starting Adu on the left who pushes it up to Bruin on the wing. Bruin passes the ball just out of the reach of Lustig into Allen. He cut inside and sends a right footed shot, but Isaksson makes a diving save to prevent the sure goal from Allen. The deflection is picked up by Holden who kicks it back out to the captain Bradley. This is a strong build up as the Americans press forward with strength looking for an opening. The great vision of Bradley finds a lane for Bruin and sends it through. Bruin takes the shot, but Isaksson makes another diving save. Both goalkeepers are playing tremendously and the halftime whistle would blow with the score 0-0.

Allen's amazing "Crane Kick" goal in the 47'

The United States would begin the second half the same way as they ended the first. The were on the attack immediately as Bradley brought the ball forward. Chandler came charging up the wing from behind Bradley, and the lob pass from Bradley just beat the defender in the air. Chandler headed the ball on a cross to a streaking Allen inside, and Allen shot the ball in what can only be described as a crane kick in midair. The one timed volley caught Isaksson by surprise as the ball found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead for the United States.

After the celebration was over, both sides came back to the center with renewed fire. The feeling out period was over, and the real game was about to begin. Pekalski hit Elm, and Elm sent a long pass to Larsson up the wing. Larsson would cut back to the middle on a nice step over, hitting Pekalski back up top. Pekalski would send the ball to Ibrahimovic, who would take the shot. It beat Guzan to the post, but the ball was on the other side, just wide of the target. The US fans breathed a sigh of relief on that shot as the team would set up for the goal kick.

This time the Americans wouldn’t sit back and wait as they learned against Portugal. They would push forward, even as the game would be drawing to a close. Adu would send the ball across to Bradley, switching play to the other side. Bradley would pass up to newly subbed in Dempsey, who would send the quick pass to Gatt. Gatt would take an ambitious shot from way back, but Isaksson got to the spot easily. The punt was intercepted by Bradley, and the US began their slow build up again, passing from side to side. Allen would get another chance late, but instead passed it off to Bruin. The small delay allowed for Bachman to get back in front and the ball would be tackled away.

As the game hit the 80’, Sweden knew this was their last chance to equalize the game and get much needed points in the group. A long possession would ensue as the United States wouldn’t touch the ball in the remaining time. Toivonen would come in via substitution for Ibrahimovic, and he reinvigorated the side with his fresh legs. Toivonen cut through the US midfield like they were butter with speed and agility that frankly they weren’t expecting this late in the match. Toivonen would draw the defenders to him, leaving Jonsson wide open for the 1 on 1 with Guzan. Jonsson missed badly and put the ball wide of the target, but somehow the referee called a corner kick.

On the ensuing corner from a subbed Kacanikic, the arcing ball fell perfectly inside to Toivonen for the headed strike. Guzan just got a hand on the ball to deflect it out of bounds again for another corner kick attempt. The clock struck 90’ so Sweden knew it was their last chance. This time the corner kick was cleared by Gonzalez up top, but a waiting Larsson intercepted the clearance and brought it back up again. He would find Jonsson on one last pass to the middle. Jonsson would put everything into this shot as the ball curled and bended towards the right corner. Guzan tracked the flight of the ball and realized he would have to lay out for it. He fully extended his body and not only saved it but secured the ball as well. He would punt it away and the final whistle was sounded. The United States beat Sweden 1-0 for a crucial 3 points. Don’t look now, but the Americans who didn’t stand a chance in the group of death looked poised to advance to the knockout stage.

Lets just say it comes down to the wire. This group has been crazy. I have another write up coming soon. I've been so busy at work its been hard to get games in, but I will try to get something done either tonight or tomorrow.

The stage has been set. The grand performance was about to begin for two teams looking to advance to the knockout round. Uruguay had done an impeccable job in group play, drawing with Sweden and destroying their main competition in Portugal 3-1. The United States on the other hand sat in a surprising second place in the group. Klinsmann’s young lineup had reinvigorated the side and they looked poised to advance to the knockout stage. They just needed to take care of business with at least a draw and they would move on.

Uruguayan goalkeeper Muslera has been incredible this tournament, making great saves and only allowing 2 goals so far. On the offensive side for Uruguay, the always dangerous Cavani can score from anywhere on the pitch. His stellar 2 goal game against Portugal has propelled them into this leading position in the group. On the American side, Alvin Allen has been the name on everyone’s lips this tournament. But the real hero of the United States has been the incredible leadership of their keeper Guzan who has performed admirably in the absence of Tim Howard. The two sides were ready to begin match day number three to see who would ultimately win the “group of death.”

The game would begin with the United States pushing forward early, somewhat catching the strong Uruguay side off guard. Bradley would push it smoothly to Holden up the wing. He would cut back and give it right back to Bradley, who would send it to Bruin just outside the box. Coates pressured Bruin but he just got the ball out to Allen just in time. Allen took the shot, but it just went wide of the target by inches.

The goal kick would be intercepted by Gonzalez who would send it right back in Uruguay’s territory to Bradley. Bradley pushed the midfield forward again, but this time he sent a lob through pass to Allen. Allen got free with just the keeper to beat. Muslera made an amazing save, just getting a finger on the ball pushing it wide. Allen saluted the keeper knowing that shot would’ve put his team ahead early in the match.

The ensuring corner was headed away by Godin, but the ball would fall back to the captain Bradley. Bradley would pass it to Allen who would find Bruin sprinting back towards goal. The fluid pass came quickly to Bruin who would one time it back inside to Holden who was waiting in front of net wide open after Coates left him to cover Bruin. Holden would receive the ball and put away the finesse goal easily into the corner. The stunned Uruguay side could only watch as the United States ran to the corner celebrating their 1-0 lead early in the 19’.

The goal seemed to awaken something within Uruguay as they pressed forward with fury after the restart. Gargano moved the ball forward to Hernandez, who took the ball and sprinted directly upfield leaving his marker behind. Ream stepped up to defend as Hernandez would leave the ball off for Cavani, who sent a lobbed pass up the wing to Ramirez up the right side. A nervous Guzan barked out orders to his back line, but Uruguay was just passing around the box, looking for an opening. Finally Cavani took his chance, fooling Johnson on a nifty stepover move that got him inside. Gonzalez tried to poke it away, but he was a half step too late and took Cavani down in a heap, prompting the quick whistle and yellow card from the referee. Klismann was irate on the sidelines as replays showed Cavani was barely touched, but it didn’t take away from the fact that the tackle was late and in the box. Regardless, Cavani got in position for the awarded penalty attempt. Cavani moved forward to the spot, stutter stepped to try to get Guzan to bite, but the US keeper held firm. Cavani then sent the finesse shot to his right, but Guzan guessed correctly and snatched the ball out of the air for the amazing save. Cavani pounded the ground in frustration as the keeper cleared the ball. The game would head into halftime not long after as the United States took a 1-0 lead into the locker room.

Muslera makes a diving save preventing an early goal from Allen

The second half would see Uruguay pressing forward again with an intense fervor. The game took on a more physical tone as the United States and Uruguay would battle for possession throughout. Ramirez would bring it up the wing, only to be met roughly by Johnson in United States territory. Bradley would run back to help and Ramirez would end up on the ground on a slight push from Johnson. The referee would blow the whistle and award Uruguay a free kick. The US complained, but the referee stood stoic against a barrage of curses from the Americans on the field and in the stands. Pereira would take the kick for Uruguay, but Ream would clear the ball away with a header.
Godin would receive the clearance and pass it back to Gargano. He would find Alvaro Gonzalez on a give and go. Gargano would receive it back and hit an ambitious strike from deep outside the box. The ball would sail over the crossbar, ending the Uruguay threat. They were running out of time, and the United States knew it.

The US would start a rally of their own as they looked to run through the clock for this match. Allen would receive the ball off the goal kick and head it to Bruin. They caught Uruguay off guard as Bruin sprinted up the wing. Caceres tacked Bruin hard just before he could get past him, but the referee didn’t make a call. The Americans were irate, screaming bloody murder for a foul to be called. Caceres would send the outlet back to Gargano. Bradley would come in and tackle Gargano hard as well. Gargano got up and got in Bradley’s face, and soon both teams were yelling at each other. The referee stopped play and separated the players and gave Bradley a yellow card. The game was getting a bit out of control, and both sides needed to be careful that they wouldn’t get a man sent off. The side affect of all this jabbering was that the clock had ticked away and there only a few minutes left in the match.

Uruguay would restart the match with Pereira sending forward a long ball that found Cavani just outside the box. He would take the unexpected shot, but the ball deflected off of Chandler over the back line for the corner kick. Gargano would take the kick and the ball would arc towards the net. Ream and Pereira would come together in a clash of heads going for the ball. Pereira would go down in a heap in the box as the ball would be cleared away by Chandler. The Uruguayan bench went wild at Pereira going down in the box, but the referee just continued play with no call.

Allen would take the clearance and sprint down the field to run out the rest of the time. The referee only called for an additional 2 minutes of injury time, which further infuriated Uruguay as clearly much time had been wasted during the course of the match. Holden, Bruin, and Allen would continue passing the ball, keeping it out of reach of the Uruguay back line as they rushed to try to get something going before the referee could end the match. Just as Coates finally tackled the ball away from Allen to get one last push going, the referee ended the match. A cascade of boos rained down all over the stadium towards the poor officiating during the match, as Uruguay clearly felt they were robbed. That didn’t stop the Americans from celebrating though, as the United States secured first place in Group B and a favored spot in the knockout stage. Uruguay could only await in agony as its fate would be decided by the match of Portugal against Sweden to see if they would make it to the knockout stage as well. Once again, congratulations to the United States, winners of group B.

I finally finished the game against Russia super late tonight. My job is taking most of my time right now but I'll try to get something written soon. I want to write every day but realistically its becoming about every couple of days. I don't see how you keep up with all of your dynasties. Bravo man. It must be a lot of hard work.

The knockout stage of the World Cup has finally arrived. Elimination brings out the best in these competitors. No one wants to go home out of this field of 16, and these teams will battle to bring their respective countries the title of world champion. Who will remain?

The first competition of the afternoon will involve two teams that know each other well. The United States is here after what some would say is a stellar upset, winning the “group of death” rather easily. This young squad plays with a furious pace to their side, far faster that any of the previous American squads. Look for youngsters such as Shea, Allen, and Holden to push forward into the Russian side. Russia, on the other hand, has shown the solid steadiness of past years teams. The team is unflappable, even after an upsetting loss to Austria in the group stage. They would rally on the strength of their own stellar young attacker in Dzagoev. The strength of this team clearly lies in veteran Akinfeev, who has played tremendously so far in the tournament. The anthems finished up and the teams shook hands. It was time to battle for the right to reach the quarterfinals.

The United States took the kickoff right down field on the strength of Holden and the American midfield. Holden would hit Gatt on his right, who would push the ball to Allen out wide. Allen would fake the cross and sprint inside, giving to Bradley on his way past. Vasin pushed a bit to far up, giving Bradley a small window to pass it through right back to Allen. Allen would take the finesse shot but it wasn’t aimed far enough to the corner. Akinfeev got in front for a good save.

The United States would regain possession off the Akinfeev punt, once again driving forward. This time Holden would try the left side, giving first to Shea who would then give to Bruin on the quick through pass into the penalty area. Bruin would come back out, finding a streaking Allen at the top of the box. Allen would take the one time shot and put the ball well wide of the net. He clapped his hands in frustration on that one, knowing it could have put the United States up early.

The early parts of the game would still continued in the Americans favor as far as possession was concerned, but were largely uneventful. The gameplay seemed to lag in the United States midfield, with Bradley slowing down play and passing it amongst his wingers. The US seemed to be waiting for the right time to strike, but credit must be given to Denisov and his midfield as they continued to pressure back where needed, but never allowing the ball to push up to the US strikers. Finally, Holden would get to anxious and force a ball to Bruin that was easily scooped up by the back Anyukov, and off Russia went on the counter attack.

The speed of the Russian counter attack caught the US off guard as Mamaev pushed his side forward in a frenzy. He would switch fields, finding Dzagoev all alone just past the center area. Dzagoev would do the rest of the work, pushing hard up the wing before sending a beautiful cross into the box. Trouble was, there was nobody there and the ball bounced all the way through to the other corner. No US player could get there though, and Bystrov would get his chance on the ball. He waited patiently as more Russians found their way into the box while he was being physically marked by Johnson on that side. A quick step over got him loose and the slight step on his defender allowed for the ball to be crossed in again. This time Mamaev was there sending a booming volley towards the net, but it was just a bit too high, sailing over the cross bar.

The half was drawing to a close, and the United States needed to make one final push. The goal kick went to Chandler who brought the ball up himself. A bad pass to Bradley was intercepted by Denisov, and up Russia came on the counter. Denisov would leave it off for Schennikov up the wing who would send an ambitious cross from way back, but the ball was easily cleared by center back Ream. The referee would blow for halftime with the game still at 0-0.

Dzagoev showing frustration off an early miss

The second half found Russia with the ball in United States territory. After a slow start, thing began to slowly build for Russia as Glushakov got himself involved in the wing pushing forward. He would find Dzagoev cutting to the middle on a through ball just out of the reach of Bradley. Dzagoev continued inside, and sent in a rocket, but Guzan made a tremendous diving save. The ricochet would bounce right to Bystrov and he would put it into the net, and just like that Russia took a 1-0 lead.

A clearly frustrated Klinsmann seemed to be upset at his midfield for getting back lazily during the Russian restart. Both Bradley and Holden would be pulled not much later as Alonso and Dempsey both came on to the pitch. Dempsey’s fresh legs allowed for the United States to once again use their speed to get up the pitch with pace. Dempsey would pass it to Allen in the middle where he was marked by Vasin. He was just up a bit to far, and a nice step over to pull back move got Allen the space he needed to pass the ball to a cutting Bruin who timed it just perfectly so he wouldn’t be called offsides. Bruin was through with a quick 1 on 1 with Akinfeev. He took the ball from his left boot to his right as Akinfeev charged at him, and Bruin calmly poked the ball on a slow rolled up under Akinfeev to the right side of the net for the goal in the 65’.

The game would continue without much build up late. Mamayev and Alomso both took wild shots for their respective teams. Players were tired, and it was reflected in the sloppy play coming from both sides. The mostly silent Dzyuba finally got his shot on goal, but Guzan got in front of it easily. The play became really bogged down, and it looked as if one play would be the turning moment of the match.

That play came in the form of Alvin Allen, who played hero for the United States in the group stage. Chandler got the ball out wide off of a goal kick in the 86’ minute. Allen took off towards the opposing net. Chandler saw him and sent forward the long ball. Allen out paced Vasin in the middle and got to the ball just outside of the box. Akinfeev couldn’t get out of the net in time as Allen sent in a rocket left footed strike into the top corner for the goal. But wait, the sideline official had the flag raised offside. The replay clearly shows that Allen was onside. Klinsmann is furious on the United States sideline. The United States has already had problems with the officials in the Uruguay game. That was indeed a tough break for the United States as Allen’s electric goal was denied.

Russia would bring the ball forward on the free kick as freshly subbed in Zhirgov came up the wing. He would find an open Bystrov to his right, but it was too late as the official blew the whistle, signaling the end of regulation. The score was tied 1-1, so the game was going into extra time. Both teams looked extremely tired, but it was the Americans who looked emotionally drained after having that late goal by Allen ripped from them. A steady Russian team has already dealt with a bad loss, but the United States had not felt this sort of adversity in the tournament yet. Who would step up to grab the game?

US Manager Klinsmann was not happy with the effort of his side late in the second half

The first period of extra time began with more of the same slow play within both midfields. Denisov would try a long ball of his own to Dzyuba, but a well timed header by Ream stopped the attack. As slow and methodical as the pace got, it was clear that the United States was backpedalling. It looked as if they were content to wait out the Russians who weren’t really pushing forward with much of an attack of their own. It seemed as if they were waiting for the right moment to attack, but Russia was definitely running out of time.

Dzagoev would take matters into his own hands just before the end of the first extra time half. He would slice through the backline like butter, sprinting up the wing, then spinning to the middle of the field. He would blow by a confused Gonzalez and get off an arcing bender that was out of the reach of Guzan, but it sailed just wide of the net. It was an extremely close call, and Guzan tried to pump up his defense to tell them to get it in gear. The goal kick would slice through the air headed deep as the referee blew the whistle signaling the end of the first extra time period.

The fast pace of the American side had finally caught up to them as they all looked gassed. Klinsmann tried to yell encouragement at his players. Russia showed signs of beign tired as well, but veteran keeper Akinfeev gathered his team together in a make shift huddle and patted each player on the shoulder, reinvigorating them for the remaining time in the match. Win or lose, both teams were ready to end this match before penalty kicks.

The referee began the second half of extra time and Russia took immediate control pushing up against the tried American side. The long steady buildup of the first half instead became quick feints and strikes against the United States back line. It caught them off gaud and Dzagoev was able to send in a wide open shot from outside the box. Guzan came up huge with the diving save, but the ball bounced back to Dzyuba in the middle. He sent in a shot on his own. A clutch block by Ream saved the United States as the center back got in front of him just in time. The deflection flew back outside the box, and Zhirgov would receive it. He would push it outside to Glushakov on the wing. Glushakov would fake a cross and come back inside. The fake didn’t fool Chandler, as the defender poked the ball away and cleared it to an awaiting Alonso.

Counter attack was all that was on the mind of the United States. Russia had given its all in that attack, and now their back line was extremely exposed. Only Putsko and Vasin were back, and Alonso pressed the ball forward with fresher legs than both. The Russian midfield sprinted back to help, but Alonso passed off to the veteran Dempsey, who showed that he still had the pace to lead this attack. Dempsey would sprint up the middle and Vasin would come up to mark him. Before Vasin could get there, Dempsey sent the through ball past the outstretched leg of Putsko into the awaiting Allen. He was free. The flag stayed down, but Allen was focused on the task at hand. There was no one in sight. Allen sprinted from the right back to the middle for the 1 on 1 with Akinfeev.

It was the 118’, almost at the end of the match, and it seemed as if both players knew this would be the pivotal moment. Akinfeev charged out of the net with his arms wide. Allen wasn’t able to get back over to the exactly middle of the field, and Akinfeev had the angle on him. The Russian back line was closing on Allen. He would have to make a decision on what was the best shot to take. Allen lifted his right leg and Akinfeev dove left. It would have been the perfect save. The trouble for Akinfeev is that it wasn’t a shot. The ball came off Allen’s foot parallel to the diving Akinfeev, and replays show Akinfeev’s eyes widening as the realization hit his face. It was a give and go pass. Dempsey was free on the other side for a wide open shot on net. Dempsey hit the one timer into the back of the net for the goal and the win. A screaming Dempsey lifted his arms screaming in jubilation. On a team of youngsters, the veteran Dempsey showed his strengthen and vision, orchestrating the late win for the United States.

A crestfallen Russian side fought valiantly, and came in with the perfect strategy to outlast the scrappy Americans. After the game, both teams shook hands and exchanged jerseys in a sign of sportsmanship. The competitors showed respect to one another throughout. This won’t be the last time we see this Russian side, with good young pieces they should be able to get back to this position in future tournaments. For now, the celebration lies in the Western Hemisphere, as the United States is on to the quarterfinals.

It's one thing to have a nail biting league or cup game, but to have a round of 16 game in the World Cup go to extra time must have been outrageously gut wrenching. So glad Allen's World Cup dreams can march on!!
