Greenwich, Connecticut - In what is being called the largest endeavor in professional wrestling history, a local wrestling promotion is launching world wide. Calling themselves World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), the organization has gathered backers from around the world to make this effort possible. The company is owned through stocks distributed to companies that have allowed their wrestlers to leave current contracts to go help start the WWE. However, most stocks are held by the man that will be running the show, Mr. Vincent Kennedy McMahon. He released the following statement earlier this week --
"Thank you ladies and gentlemen for your time in what is going to be the first of many press conferences, I hope. We here at WWE have a vision, a vision to see wrestling not be just a joke or something you hear about once in awhile. We set out today to prove that this is indeed true entertainment and requires physically gifted athletes. We thank all those who have supported us and helped us put this together. As you know, a lot of money went into purchasing these superstar athletes from their territories as well as coordinating with stadiums and television companies to air our program as we travel around the world. WWE is a company that will take zero holidays, have zero breaks, and give back to our fans the entertainment they deserve.
We will have two shows, one that airs on Mondays and another that will air on Fridays. We will also be doing pay-per-views, these pay-per-views are not yet decided and will be revealed throughout this year. I can say with confidence though that our first unnamed pay-per-view will air at the end of April this year from East Rutherford, New Jersey! Thank you for your time and tune in on Monday on the USA Network for the first installment of WWE!"
Will the WWE be a success? Can these wrestlers truly transcend the territory affiliation that people expect of wrestling? Only time will tell, but I for one will be tuning in on Monday Night to see them take their first steps.
