Nice, France (AP) - SM Caen saw their unbeaten streak come to an end as they dropped a thrilling 4-3 decision to OGC Nice at Allianz Riviera on Saturday evening. Caen overcame a two goal deficit to level the match before halftime, but could not rally late to drop their first match in seven outings.

Nice went in front just four minutes in as Hatem Ben Arfa headed home a rebound off a Michael Le Bihan shot off of the post. Michael Le Bihan put a shot on Remy Vercoutre in the 24th minute that he stopped, but the rebound bounced to Ben Arfa who headed it over to Jean Michel Seri, who volleyed it home to make it 2-nil.

Late in the half, Caen would break through. Jacsson Antonio Domingues Piazon sent a corner in that defender Syam Ben Youssef got a head on that sailed past keeper Mouez Hassen. Just four minutes later, Jeff Louis knocked a ball off the post and Herve Bazile headed home the rebound to level the match.

Just four minutes after the half, Nice went back in front. Mickael Le Bihan one-timed a pass from Mahamane Traore to put Nice up 3-2.

Kenny Vermeer came close to equalizing again, but his shot from the top of the six yard box, hit the post and stayed out in the 75th minute.

Alessane Plea stole the ball from Syam Ben Youssef in the 82nd minute, then popped it over the head of Remy Vercoutre and into the empty net to put Nice up by two.

That set up the wild ending. Kenny Vermeer got tripped in the Nice box in the 90th minute, setting up an Andy Delort penalty that he converted. Delort then had a gtreat chance to euqalize just moments later, but he was taken out, in the box by Nice defender Hatem Ben Aref. The referee saw no foul, although Delort lay on the ground in agony. Jonathan Beaulieu then took the discipline in his own hands and hammered Ben Aref from behind, drawing an immediate red card.

Andy Delort was seriously injured on the tackle and broke his ankle. He will likely miss at least 8 weeks. Jacsson Antonio Domingues Piazon left the match in the second half after another rough tackle and sprained an ankle. He will miss at least a month.

Up next for Caen (6-3-5) is a home match with AS Saint-Etienne (7-4-3) next Saturday.

Caen, Normandie (AP) - SM Caen rebounded from their wild road loss last week with a solid 1-nil home victory over AS Saint-Etienne at a snowy Stade Michel d'Ornano on Saturday evening. Luigi Veldmate scored the lone goal in the 24th minute, knocking it in off of a Saint-Etienne defender.

Saint-Etienne had a great chance to grab the lead in the 15th minute as Daniel Amartey shook free of a defender in the Caen box, but his right footed shot sailed just wide.

20-year-old Venezuelan keeper Wuilker Farinez was outstanding for Caen. He stopped all five shots on target and seems to be in good favor with manager Lothar Matthaus. He was named Man of the Match.

The snow picked up in intensity after halftime, with scoring chances diminishing as the weather took a turn for the worse. Saint-Etienne would have a couple of quality chances in the second half. Robert Beric flicked one just wide of the far post in the 68th minute and Rodrigo Dourado cracked one over the bar in the 79th minute.

With the loss, Saint-Etienne (7-4-4) extended their losing streak to four matches after starting out undefeated in their first 11 matches. SM Caen (7-3-5) has rebounded nicely from a slow start as they continue to push towards a European spot for the 2019-20 season.

Up next for Caen is a trip to Rennais for a mid-week match-up with sixth-place Stade Rennais (7-5-3).

          12/5/18
Rennes, France (AP) - SM Caen earned a big point on Saturday night as Herve Bazile scored in the dying moments to salvage a 1-1 draw with Stade Rennais at snowy Roazhon Park. The goal came despite Caen playing the final 25 minutes down a man, as former Rennais defender Jeremy Gelin was sent off for a rough tackle.

Caen had a chance to grab the lead just ten minutes in, but Luigi Veldmate could not put home a perfect pass from Jonathan Beaulieu, as his shot sailed just over the bar. Just minutes later, Stade Rennais had a corner kick. The ball was sent into Abdoulaye Doucoure who dribbled to the top of the six, then crossed it to Jeremie Boga, who volleyed it past Remy Vercoutre to put Rennais up 1-nil.

Doucoure had a chance to make it 2-nil just minutes later, but his shot just grazed the top of the bar.

Former Stade Rennaid centerback Jeremy Gelin was facing his former team for the first time. It would only last 65 minutes as he was sent off for a tackle from behind, leaving Caen a man down the final 25 minutes.

It looked as though Rennais would hold on, but Herve Bazile got free late in the box. His shot got steered just wide by keeper Marcelo Grohe. That setup a corner that Luigi Veldmate sent in, and Bazile headed past Grohe to level the match in added time. It was Bazile's seventh goal on the season.

After the match, a disgruntled Jonathan Beaulieu made it clear that he wants to leave the club during the winter transfer window. The 25-year-old midfielder is easily Caen's most valuable player and may fetch a nice transfer fee if the club does agree to his wishes.

Ninth-place Caen (7-4-5, 25 pts) will return home to take on 13th-place Lille (4-7-5, 19 pts) on Saturday evening.

Caen, Normandie (AP) - SM Caen picked up a big win on Saturday afternoon, in a wild one, as they edged LOSC Lille 3-2 at Stade Michel d'Ornano. Kenny Vermeer scored twice in the final five minutes, both go ahead goals, to help Caen win for the seventh time in ten matches.

Vermeer had a great match, twice just missing in the opening half. He put one just over the bar in the 16th minute, then clipped the bar in the 45th minute. Jacsson Antonio Domingues Piazon hit the post in the 29th minute, then picked up yellow cards in the 32nd and 39th minute, sending him off.

The teams went to the break scoreless, but Caen had all of the best chances.

The home side would finally break through in the 61st minute. Jordan Leborgne sent a pass into Herve Bazile. He dribbled into the box, then slipped it under Issam Launay to put Caen up 1-nil.

The lead last just ten minutes, as Soualiho Meite headed home a corner to level the match in the 71st minute.

Kenny Vermeer was then robbed in the 73rd minute. He was in all alone on Launay, but the keeper got a hand on his Vermeer's shot to deflect it wide. Vermeer would finally finish in the 85th minute as he dribbled into the box, then let a quick shot go on the short side, beating Launay and putting Caen up 2-1.

A turnover in midfield, setup Lille for an equalizer just moments later. Former Borussia Monchengladbach center back Tin Jedvaj sent a long pass into Eric Beautheac. He sent in a through ball that Pirmin Schwegler one-timed past Wuilker Farinez as Lille stunningly tied the match at 2-2 in the 89th minute.

That just setup Kenny Vermeer for the wild finish. He carried the ball into the box, dribbled across the top then fired a rocket into the top right corner to give Caen a 3-2 lead three minutes into extra time.

Jeff Louis would pick up a red card in the dying moments, meaning he will miss the club's next match.

The win leaves Caen at (8-4-5, 28 pts). They remain in ninth position, but are just one point shy of fourth position and a European birth. They will next travel to Monaco to take on AS Monaco (5-6-6, 21 pts) next Saturday.

Lyon, France (AP) - SM Caen scored three first half goals, then held on, to pull off a third round upset over Olympique Lyonnais 3-2 in the 2018-19 Coupe de LIgue at Stade de Gerland on Tuesday evening. Lindsay Rose's own goal just before halftime, proved to be the match winner for Caen as they advanced to the Quarterfinals.

Jacsson Antonio Domingues Piazon got Caen off on the right foot, scoring just four minutes in. He dribbled to the top of the box, then hit a left footed shot in off of the left post to put Caen up 1-nil. Piazon almost made it 2-nil in the 33rd minute, as he took a long pass from Jonathan Beaulieu, but he knocked one off the far right post.

Jordan Leborgne dribbled into the box, just before halftime, and passed it to an unmarked Herve Bazile at the top of the six yard box. He one-timed it past Francois Musiera and into the top of the net to make it 2-nil. Just moments later, Jeff Louis dribbled into the box and tried to pass it across the front of thr goal, but defender Lindsay Rose stuck a foot out and knocked it into his own net to make it 3-nil.

The good feelings that SM Caen had at halftime evaporated quickly after the break. A turnover in their own penalty area led to Olympique Lyonnais' first goal as Corentin Tolesco cracked a left footed shot into the top right corner past a diving Wuilker Farinez in the 53rd minute. Just foru minutes later, Rafael intercepted a pass and sent in a cross that Mathieu Valbuena headed home to make it 3-2.

Lyon's Louis Nganioni would put a halt to the comeback hopes as he was sent off on the 63rd minute for a harsh tackle on Jonathan Beaulieu. SM Caen would pack it in defensively, allowing just one more good scoring chance as Nabil Fekir headed one just over the bar in stoppage time.

The win sends Caen into the Quarterfinals for just the fourth time in their history. They previously advanced to the quarterfinals in 1992, 1996, and 1998.

Up next, Caen will host FC Metz on Sunday in the final match of the first half of the Ligue 1 campaign before the winter break.

Yeah, the referees in France seem to be much less tolerant than they were in Germany.
