Marseille, France (AP) - SM Caen's defensive struggles continued on Wednesday evening as they fell at Stade Velodrome to Olympique Marseille 3-1. They have allowed 13 goals in their past four matches, going (0-2-2).
Newly acquired Kenny Vermeer went down with an ankle injury just three minutes into the match and had to leave. It was determined that he suffered a sprained ankle and will miss about a month of action.
In the tenth minute, Dennis Appiah got tripped up moving the ball out of his own box, by Michy Batshuayi. The ball fell right onto the foot of Abdelaziz Barrada, who one-timed it into the top right corner to put Marseille up 1-nil.
Another new acquisition, Jacsson Antonio Domingues Plazon, streaked down the left side in the 15th minute, but his shot grazed the top of the crossbar. Central defender Jeremy Gelin sent a long pass to Herve Bezile in the 23rd minute. Bezile, who came on for the injured Vermeer, dribbled left into the box, then fired a left footed shot into the top right corner to level the match at 1-1.
Andy Delort would get free in the box in the 30th minute, but he headed a cross from Bezile just wide of the left post.
The teams would go to the half at 1-1, with Caen hanging with the southern French side, and looking for another big road point.
Another Caen giveaway, this time from Jordan Leborgne, would set up another Marseille goal. Mendy took the ball away from Leborgne, sent in a cross in that Michy Batshuayi got on the end of, heading it past Paul Reulet in the 54th minute. Yet another turnover by Caen, in the 76th minute, led to a third Marseille marker. Michael Jordan Nkololo turned it over to Fred. He sent a ball into Michy Batsguayi, who found an open Lasanna Diarra. Diarra slipped it past Reulet to make it 3-1.
The loss leaves Caen at (2-2-3, 8 pts). They will return home to face surprising Stade de Reims (5-2-0, 15 pts), who sits in third position, on Saturday.

Caen, Normandie (AP) - SM Caen dropped it's third straight match on Saturday afternoon, falling 1-nil to red-hot Stade de Reims, at Stade Michel d'Ornano. Diego scored the lone goal in the 14th minute, one-timing a pass from Gaetan Charbonnier.
The referee, Baptiste Alacoque, had a huge role in the outcome of this match. He handed out two red cards within seven minutes to SM Caen players. The first went to captain Jonathan Beaulieu in the 25th minute for a harsh tackle. Then seven minutes later, Alocoque handed out a second red card. This one was very controversial, as Andy Delort appeared to fall down, then Reims midfielder Diego fell over him.
Lothar Matthaus was furious. "First of all Beaulieu's card was borderline to me, but Delort's was absolute trash," said Matthaus after. "It cost is a chance to win."
SM Caen would play one of their best matches of the season defensively after the ejection of both players, playing a very even match, despite being down two players. Luigi Veldmate would come close to leveling the match just before halftime, hitting the left post, after getting free at the top of the box.
Herve Lazile would have a shot tipped just over the bar in the 86th minute.

Bordeaux, France (AP) - SM Caen snapped a three match skid on Friday evening as they rallied to defeated Girondins de Bordeaux 2-1 at Neaveau Stade de Bordeaux. Herve Bazile's penalty conversion in the 84th minute provided the difference for Caen as they picked up their third win on the campaign.
Bordeaux grabbed the lead in the 30th minute as Jussie dribbled down the right side, avoided a tackle in the box by Tomas Nitriansky, moved to his left then hit a left footed shot into the top right corner.
Caen would draw even just before the half. Jeff Louis dribbled the ball in from the right touch line, and found Jacsson Antonio Domingues Piazon unmarked at the top of the box. He hit a shot with the outside of his right boot that curled away from Pedro Gallese and into the top right corner.
Herve Bazile then had a couple of great chances to put Caen in the second half. He shot one just wide after a nice feed from Luigi Veldmate in the 60th minute. Then hit the post in the 70th minute after intercepting the ball near the top of the Bordeaux box.
In the 81st minute, Jacsson Antonio Domingues Piazon dribbled into the box and got tripped from behind by Bordeaux defender Ibrahima Gomis. Gomis was issued a yellow card and Caen sent Herve Bazile to the penalty spot. Bazile hit a rocket into the left side netting to put Caen up 2-1.

Toulouse, France (AP) - SM Caen made a successful return from the International break as they went back on the road and won 2-nil at Toulouse FC on Saturday afternoon. Herve Bazile scored again, netting his fifth on the campaign as Caen won it's second straight Ligue 1 match.
Caen came out and pressed from the start. Red-hot Herve Bazile was robbed in the fifth minute from point blank range by keeper Ali Ahamada. Jacsson Antonio Domingues Piazon then lifted one just over the bar in the 11th minute. Piazon was then tripped in the box in the 18th minute with no call.
In the 23rd minute, Jordan Leborgne dribbled into the box and lifted a shot that Ahamada saved, but the rebound came to the foot of Herve Bazile and he made no mistake in burying it to put Caen up 1-nil. Jeff Louis was tripped in the box by Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro in the 39th minute. Akpa Akpro received a yellow card and Jacsson Antonio Domingues Piazon went to the penalty spot. He made no mistake in rattling one in off the underside of the crossbar to make it 2-nil.
Caen would play an excellent defensive match as they improved to (3-2-1) away from home, and (4-2-4) overall. They will return home next Saturday to take on SC Bastia (1-3-6) ahead of a Coupe de Ligue tie with SC Bastia next Wednesday, also at home.

Caen, Normandie (AP) - SM Caen used some late magic to pull out a 2-2 draw with SC Bastia on Saturday afternoon at Stade Michel d'Ornano. Pape Lenogue drew a foul inside the Bastia box in the 88th minute to set up the late game heorics from newcomer Jacsson Antonio Domingues Piazon.
The teams played a pretty quiet first half with neither side generating many quality scoring chances. The big news in the opening 45 minutes was the loss of Caen midfielder Jonathan Beaulieu to an ankle injury. He left the match and is expected to miss up to a month of action. Luigi Veldmate replaced him.
Ten minutes into the second half Bastia would strike first. Sadio Diallo ripped one off the far post, but the ball slid behind keeper Remy Vercoutre and back to Diallo, who tapped it home to put the visitors up 1-nil. Moments later Kenny Vermeer got free in the box and hit a shot that was punched high into the air by Jean-Louis Leca. Vermeer got a head to the rebound, but it sailed just over the bar.
Luigi Veldmate would find an equalizer in the 60th minute. He dribbled in unmarked from midfield, and launched a shot that Leca stopped, but the ball bounced over him and the momentum carried it into the net to level the match.
Herve Bazile would then get sent off in the 67th minute for a late, hard tackle from behind, that left Caen down a man for the final 20+ minutes. Bastia would take advantage of the extra man, but minutes later as Diallo dribbled into the box and found Axel Ngando at the top of the six. He dribbled to elude defender Jeremy Gelin, then fired one into the lower left corner to put Bastia back in front 2-1.
Caen would not fold though, and they poured on the pressure over the final ten minutes, despite being down a man. Finally in the 88th minute, Bastia broke. Pape Lenogue dribbled into the box and got past a Bastia defender, but Axel Ngando tripped him up before he could get off a shot, leading to a penalty. Jacsson Antonio Domingues Piazon would convert and the match was level at 2-2.
Keny Vermeer had a chance to win it in the closing moments and he worked a beautiful give-and-go with Luigi Veldmate, but his shot just bent wide of the left post as the final whistle blew, ending the match in a draw.
The same two teams will meet Wednesday in the same place as SC Bastia will face SM Caen in the second round of the 2018-19 Coupe de Ligue. Caen (4-3-4, 15 pts) returns to Ligue 1 action next Saturday at Parc de Princes to face Paris Saint-Germain (7-2-2, 23 pts).

Caen, Normandie (AP) - SM Caen was badly outplayed, and had to play the final 107 minutes down a man, but they managed to send their match with SC Bastia to penalties, where they prevailed 4-2 in the Second round of the 2018-19 Coupe de Ligue. Newly acquired 20-year-old keeper Wuilker Farinez was spectacular, stopping 10 shots during the run of gameplay, and stopping the game winning shot in the shootout to send Caen onto the Round of 16.
These two teams played just four days earlier, as Caen scored late to earn a 2-2 draw in Ligue 1 play. This one was similar, but a sending off just 13 minutes in, gave Bastia a numbers advantage that they used to their advantage in tiring out the Caen side. Luigi Veldmate got tackled from behind by Yannock Cahuzza in the 13th minute with no call. He got up and tackled Cahuzza, also from behind and was sent off.
SC Bastia opened the scoring just eight minutes in as Sadio Diallo split the Caen defense and hit a rocket into the left side netting to make it 1-nil.
Down a man, Caen would find an equalizer in the 17th minute. Jordan Leborgne sent a through ball in that Michael Jordan Nkololo ran onto. He put a right foot on it and managed to get it past Jean-Louis Leca to level things. Caen would have a couple of great chances to take the lead before halftime, but could not convert. Jeroen Osman headed one over the bar in the 30th minute, and Tomas Notransky slipped one just wide in the 37th minute. Nitransky would get in all alone on Leca in the 45th minute, but the keeper got a hand on Nitransky's shot, deflecting it just wide.
After the half, SC Bastia dominated the match. They would grab the lead in the 67th minute. Axel Ngando came in on a counter attack and placed it into the top left corner, taking advantage of a tiring Caen team playing with just ten men.
It appeared as though Bastia could blow the match open at any moment, but Wuilker Farinez was unbelievable. The 20-year-old keeper, acquired from Italian side Empoli, was making his first start for the senior club. He was acrobatic, and seemed to be in all the right places.
In the 86th minute, Caen's Michael Jordan Nkololo made Farinez's efforts pay off. He intercepted the ball in the midfield, dribbled across the top of the box, then unleashed a right footed rocket into the low right corner to level the match at 2-2 and send this one into an extra 30 minute period.
In extra time, SC Bastia had chances galore, but could not beat Farinez. Ngando headed one wide in the 99th minute, then Floyd Ayite appeared to have a game winner in the 120th minute, but Farinez somehow got a finger on Ayite's header to deflect it just over the bar, sending the match to penalties.
Vincent Basset went straight down the middle for Caen to open up the shootout. Sadio Diallo hit the right side netting to level it. Jeff Louis made his attempt to put Caen up 2-1. Francois Kamano then sailed one over the bar to give Caen the advantage. Michael Jordan Nkololo hammered his home, as did Bastia's Axel Ngando. Jacsson Antonio Domingues Piazon struck his into the side netting setting up Farinez's heroics. The keeper guessed, diving to his left and stopping the shot of Floyd Ayite to send Caen though.
Up next for Caen is a return to Ligue 1 play as they head to Paris on Saturday to take on third-place Paris Saint-Germain.

Paris, France (AP) - SM Caen is suddenly red-hot as their newcomers are beginning to settle in. On Saturday evening, SM Caen stunned PSG at Parc des Princes 1-nil.
Things could not have gotten off to a better start as Kenny Vermeer dribbled into the box and past a PSG defender, then beat keeper Kevin Trapp on the short side in the second minute. Caen then settled back and absorbed the PSG attack for the remainder of the half, getting outshot 10-2.
Lothar Matthaus changed tactics at the half, realizing that absorbing the PSG attack would probably not be wise the rest of the way. Caen played a much more balanced second half, with each team getting some excellent chances. Neymar got in behind the Caen defense in the 65th minute, but his shot glanced off the far post.
Herve Basile had Caen's best chance to extend their lead in the 68th minute, but his header on a Jordan Leborgne cross, sailed just wide of the far post. Kenny Vermeer came in unmarked on a counter attack in the 89th minute, but Kevin Trapp made a spectacular save to keep it a one goal match.
PSG would have one last great chance in added time. But Romain Habran's header sailed just over the bar, preserving back up keeper Paul Reulet's clean sheet. The win left Caen at (5-3-4, 18 pts) and has moved them up into eighth place, just four points shy of a Euro League spot. They extended their unbeaten streak to four matches (3-1-0).

Caen, Normandie (AP) - SM Caen ran their unbeaten streak to six matches on Sunday afternoon as they slipped past FC Nantes 1-nil at Stade Michel d'Ornano. The win kept Caen moving up the Ligue 1 table, as they now sit in eighth place, just three points shy of a European position.
FC Nantes (5-2-6, 17 pts) had a couple of chances early on, as Adryan slipped one just wide in the 4th minute, then headed one off the crossbar in the 7th minute. Yusef Erdogan thought that he put the Canaries in front in the 26th minute, as he headed a corner past Paul Reulet, but Jeremy Gelin headed it off the line to keep the match scoreless.
SM Caen looked like they had the lead in the 37th minute when Andy Delort slipped a through ball onto the foot of Jacsson Antonio Gonzales Piazon, Piazon placed it into the left corner of the net and Caen looked to be on their way, but a late offside flag negated the goal, and the teams went to the break scoreless.
The Caen faithful would not have to wait very long after the break to celebrate. Just four minutes after halftime, Pape Lenogue would dribble into the box, then find an unmarked Luigi Veldmate at the top of the six, and his one-timer beat Alexandre Olliero, to put Caen up 1-nil.
Nantes had a couple of pretty good chances down the stretch, but could not beat Remy Vercoutre. First, in the 66th minute, Kolbejnn Sigborsson headed an Adryan cross just wode of the far post. Then Sigborsson would fire one wide in the 77th minute.
Andy Delort had a great chance to break his scoring drought in the closing moments, but his shot from 12 yards out sailed just over the bar after a great feed from Kenny Vermeer.
"Our defense has been better the past couple of matches," said Lothar Matthaus after. "We need to worry about the back end first, then take advantage of opportunities when they arise."
SM Caen (6-3-4, 21 pts) will now hit the road to take on fourth-place OGC Nice (7-3-3, 24 pts) in a big Ligue 1 fixture in 13 days after the International Break.
