DAY 2 OF TESTING FOR BAHARI RACING TEAM AT NORTH CAROLINA SPEEDWAY

      Rockingham, NC

The Bahari Racing team was in Rockingham, North Carolina again today for a private testing session. Driver Steve Fulton and crew chief Doug Hewitt were at the track laying down some laps. From what we could tell the team was working on race stuff since the car ran around 30 laps and then turned into the garage and we didn't see them again. We caught up to Fulton and he had this to say.

Steve Fulton: We put us a race setup in that Johnny Benson won with last season so we knew it was good. Tires fall off here in the sandhills of North Carolina pretty bad but we didn't fall off near as much as I experienced here last spring. I'm confident we will have a good race car and shouldn't have the problems I faced when I raced here last year. Whether that was the car or me knowing to take it easier or no other cars out there who's to say. It is likely a combination of all three. Either way we are excited to come here in February.

Here is the speed chart from the testing session.

1998 NASCAR Raybestos Rookie Of The Year Contenders

1 | Steve Park | Dale Earnhardt, Inc.
            13 | Jerry Nadeau | Elliott-Marino Racing
28 | Kenny Irwin Jr. | Robert Yates Racing
            78 | Gary Bradberry | Triad Motorsports
            91 | Kevin Lepage | LJ Racing

Meet the 1998 NASCAR Winston Cup Series rookie class. 4 of our 5 drivers will also be driving for rookie teams. The only team that has previous competition will be the Robert Yates Racing team of Kenny Irwin Jr. I'm not sure if that makes him the favorite or not but the oddsmakers in Vegas are pointing to him to follow in the footsteps of fellow USAC star Jeff Gordon. He certainly will have the team behind him that is proven so we will find out as the season progresses. I wouldn't count the other guys out though. We can only hope that this years competition for rookie honors is closer than last years.

1998 NASCAR WINSTON CUP SERIES SEASON PREVIEW

It's a cold and dreary day here in North Carolina, the home of almost all the NASCAR Winston Cup Series teams. The teams are busy inside the facilities working on their race cars while the clean haulers sit outside just waiting...waiting to be loaded with a primary and a backup car along with all the tools that will be needed for a race weekend. Except this is no ordinary race weekend but an almost two week long trip for Speedweeks in Daytona Beach, Florida.

It's NASCAR's Super Bowl, The Great American Race the Daytona 500. Not only does it kick off the season but if you win there you will forever be immortalized with the legends of NASCAR. From testing to practice, from the Bud Shootout to qualifying, all are just previews to a grand specticle that is the Daytona 500. All teams will be starting with a clean slate, zero points and last years fortune or misfortune a distant view in the rearview mirror.

You have your favorites like defending champion of the series Mark Martin, last years winner Ricky Rudd and although he is 0 for the 500 Dale Earnhardt is always a threat on restrictor plate tracks. Then you have your rookies who are eager to prove their worth on NASCAR's top stage. You have new faces in new places. All these stories will unfold here in Daytona Beach and then across 32 other races in a long, grueling season in Winston Cup Racing.

The schedule is 33 races long this year with the addition of Las Vegas Motor Speedway which the teams will see in just the third race of the season. We have 44 fulltime teams eager to roll into Daytona and get this 50th season kicked off in style. Who will win the title in 1998? Mark Martin? Dale Jarrett? The Intimidator? How about Jeff Gordon? Or will some new phenom take the sport by storm. There is only one way to find out and that is to watch it all unfold before your eyes. So, lets all head to Florida where the air is warmer, the sun is brighter and the smell of the ocean is on the wind. Let's head down south and get this 50th season underway in style!

                BAHARI RACING 1998 SEASON PREVIEW

Bahari Racing is coming off an up and down 1997 season. It was a tale of two halves of the season. The first half saw them win a race and run in the top-10 in points. The second half saw the team struggle and fall to a 22nd place finish in the final point standings. Driver Johnny Benson announced he was leaving to join Roush Racing and the team was left searching for a driver.

Enter Steve Fulton, who just like Bahari had a good first half for his circumstances but then was flopping in the second half. His family team was forced to close and he quickly jumped at the opportunity to drive for the #30 team. The team will be running with Gumout primary sponsorship and secondary sponsorship from the Sara Lee Corporation which will be showcased in 4 of the seasons night races. Jimmy Dean sausage, State Fair Corn Dogs, Rudy's Farm breakfast biscuits and Bryan meats will all have their own paint schemes in those races.

As far as expectations go the team said it was just going to give Steve the best cars they could and not expect anything but his best effort on race day. Steve has his own expectations which he laid out as follows:
                • Start Every Race:
                  - This was a problem for his family operation and led to many struggles. Bahari will start out in the top-35 in points so he is guaranteed a spot in the first five races regardless of qualifying.
                • Finsih Top-25 In Points:
                  - On top of staying in the top-35, Steve would like to finish in the top-25 and earn a trip to New York for the awards ceremony in November.
                • Get A Pole:
                  - Even though the team says it wasn't worried about qualifying too much as long as he was in the race Steve wants to be in the Bud Shootout next season.
                • Get A Win:
                  - This is a goal the team and driver have in common. They would like to get that win to be in the Winston if not this year then next season.

The driver and team are excited to get the season started and can't wait for Daytona 500 practice to begin. They have already tested for the 500 so they can't wait to get out in the draft and see where they stand on speeds.

Love seeing IROC in the mix! Are you just going to use the real life champions from the other series like LaJoie and Stewart?

RUSTY WALLACE HOLDS OFF DARRELL WALTRIP IN THE BUD SHOOTOUT

                        Daytona Beach, FL

It was the annual exhibition race for the previous season's pole sitters and past Bud Shootout winners. Bobby Labonte started on the pole and led the first 10 laps of the race until Dale Jarrett was finally able to get the bottom line of cars to push him into the lead. It was short lived though as Rusty Wallace made quick work of the #88 car and put his blue duece in the wind and would lead the rest of the way for the win.

Darrell Waltrip came home second, Dale Jarrett third, Steve Grissom fourth and Terry Labonte rounded out the top-5. The fans really enjoyed the race and they look forward to more action on the track here at Speedweeks at Daytona International Speedway.

Next up will be the IROC Series first race of their season with a 20-lap shootout. Rusty Wallace will look to go 2/2 as he will be competing in that event as well. We will see you then race fans!

Yeah, I will use whoever won in real life for the other ones.

If I get NR2003 eventually I will probably add in some other series to the write up as well but for now I will just do Cup and IROC. I have some Busch Series carsets but a few tracks the AI is messed up at. If I can get them squared away I could do a Busch Series side by side run with what I have now but I'm not optimistic on fixing the tracks.

JEFF BURTON GRABS THE LEAD WHEN IT COUNTS AT DAYTONA

                            Daytona Beach, FL

It was the first IROC Series race of the 1998 season and it sure was a wild one. The positions were drawn for and Terry Labonte started from the pole position along side Mr. Daytona Dale Earnhardt. They didn't stay there long though as we found out quickly these cars punched big holes in the air and passing was very easy. Jeff Burton got out front at the end and was able to hold off the charges though and win Round One of the IROC Series here in Daytona Beach.

These IROC cars are all identical makes and all have identical setups so the competition was intense with every driver leading at least 1 lap in the race! The fans never sat down for the 20 lap exhibition race and all hated to see this one end.

If this is any indication of things to come the rest of Speedweeks it should be a treat for the fans. We still have a truck race, Busch Series competition and of course the Main Event the Daytona 500 this Sunday. Join us for all the action as Ricky Rudd tries to repeat and Dale Earnhardt looks for his first career Daytona 500 win. It should be a heck of a show!
