Re: Will teams start copying Ga. Tech & Navy
Georgia Tech plays in the ACC. That's like saying in 2007 "I wonder what Hawaii fans think of the "throw the ball 90% of the time" offense."
Being the ACC champion means absolutely nothing.
Statistically, the ACC champion is the worst performing champion in BCS bowls. It's significantly worse than the other 5 BCS conferences, the MWC, and the WAC, and the CUSA, MAC, and Sunbelt at least have no data as opposed to the 2-9 record of the ACC.I don't feel Myself, Call it Paralysis.Comment

Re: Will teams start copying Ga. Tech & Navy
But passing 90% of the time appeals to younger fans more than running 90% would. So I'm sure Hawaii fans loved that offense because it appeals to what they want passing. Georgia Tech fans may not like the 90% running offense because, like the earlier poster said, "it's stale".Comment

Copying as if a trend sweeping the NCAA? No
Copying, as if other schools struggling to make headway taking it up? Yeah, it could happen.
But its more important someone comes up w/a defense to sweep the nation. I think D has gotten less innovative.Originally posted by VP Richard M. NixonI always remember that whatever I have done in the past, or may do in the future, Duke University is responsible one way or the other.

Re: Will teams start copying Ga. Tech & Navy
MUSCHAMP begs to differ with you... In the NFL maybe, a majority of them run the same 3-4... To the casual fan the NCAA defenses may same bland and dry but tons of teams have different wrinkles and packages all based on personnel... No defense is going to be as innovative as offense because defense is the reactionary side of the ball...Comment

Re: Will teams start copying Ga. Tech & Navy
Nickel base is a creative defense? Its almost a no-brainer in the pass happy Big12...
As far as the topic goes... I think it takes a special group of coaches to run that system effectively at a high level. What do I know though... hahaTexas. Football. All. Day.Comment

The standard option never should have gone away. The old claim was that you couldn't win with it in the new age of college football.
Well...it seems to be winning just fine.Free LSUFan2004 and GoDevilsASU!

Re: Will teams start copying Ga. Tech & Navy
LOL. If I'm a top recruit, I definitely want to goto a school that runs the wishbone and has no aspirations of playing for championships. NOT!
To answer your question, Ga. Tech does not have top athletes. They have good athletes and are very well coached for the system their coaching staff runs.
Ga. Tech will never win a championship running that offense.
All won national championships running the triple option.
Texas and Florida won championships recently running the spread option, which isn't too far off from Paul Johnson's spread wing T option."Maybe I can't win. But to beat me, he's going to have to kill me. And to kill me, he's gonna have to have the heart to stand in front of me. And to do that, he's got to be willing to die himself. I don't know if he's ready to do that."Comment

"I find the spread entertaining and the wishbone boring and stale."
Thanks for the honest answer. That's why I think many coaches and AD's will hesitate to implement this scheme and hire coaches who do. Because of backlash from young fans. I wonder what students at Georgia Tech think of the offense.
In fact not only will we not be able to recruit blue-chip pro-style quarterbacks and wide receivers, we also wont be able to recruit blue-chip punters and kickers because we rarely kick or punt. We also wont be able to recruit blue-chip running backs, offensive linemen, defensive backs, and tight ends either because they would practice for a system that is not utilized by NFL teams.
PJ will drive burden our program with trophies and accolades for years to come with his high school offense if we dont get rid of him soon.Comment

Re: Will teams start copying Ga. Tech & Navy
As a GT student I find the offense very boring and stale. All we ever do is rack up yards and score touchdowns. its also disappointing that we only have 9 passes over 50+ yards this season. I hope we get rid of PJ after this season since we will never be able to compete in big-time college football using this high school offense.

I don't understand the "boring and stale" argument. I watch GT whenever I can because it is one of the most exciting and unique offenses in college football these days.Comment

Thanks for the responses. It will be interesting to see if more teams do implement it. It may take teams hiring Navy and Georgia Tech assistants first. But if I'm E. Michigan or New Mexico why not try it because whatever they are doing right now isn't working.Comment

I love watching it to. I wish the Illini could have used it some, not exclusively, but some with Juice because he would have been terrific in it.Comment

Re: Will teams start copying Ga. Tech & Navy
I agree with MB. The Flexbone is just as exciting to me as UF's spread.
In fact, I find it more exciting. Florida's bread and butter is on speed and talent, while GT still does not yet have the correct players, but is still winning on technique. With that beign said, JN is a total monsterAnd may thy spirit live in us, Forever LSU

Re: Will teams start copying Ga. Tech & Navy
The recruiting argument doesn't make sense. Look at Navy...they have inferior talent, but they can still compete against better teams because of their offense. You don't need a stud NFL caliber QB to run that offense. You only need a QB that can run and throw the deep ball occasionally.Comment

Re: Will teams start copying Ga. Tech & Navy
Yeah If you are one of the few schools who has a "QB run friendly" offense you will not sign the best Pro-Style or Dual threat QB. But you will have a whole nation of option QB to yourself. Not every high school athlete is thinking about the NFL. Some would just like to farther their football career. And if their good enough they can play another pos. in the pros.Last edited by da ThRONe; 11-22-2009, 12:56 PM.You looking at the Chair MAN!
