Considering the Birmingham News reported it(to the best of my knowledge)... I'd trust it for the time being.

That's the, "I don't want Mizzou anywhere near the SEC," coming out of me, though...

I find it rather hilarious that the team that started the whole thing last year (Mizzou) can't find any conference that actually wants them, lol. Nobody wants their 6 million fans and 5 last names.

This is what I don't understand. It's not like schools in the same conferences share research grant money or professors (or do they? I'm assuming). Because they compete against each other in sports, they are linked academically? How do the academic standards of one university influence any other university if they're not part of a state network (ala California network of UC schools, or UNC schools in North Carolina)?

It's very common that schools in the same conference go in on joint research projects, and do a lot to help each other out. An athletic conference forms a relationship that goes beyond sports. Otherwise, University Presidents wouldn't really get involved in all of this.

Well at least in the Big Ten there's a little bit more cooperation than you might think. The Big Ten's academic arm, the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, tries to foster collaborations, workshops for profs, course development, etc. between Big Ten member schools (plus Chicago). In addition, the Big Ten has events such as the Big Ten graduate student expo to advertise to students at other universities. And lastly, there's a sense of pride and prestige that comes from being a part of an academically strong conference. I like the fact that most of the Big Ten is in the AAU and its members are seen as quality institutions by my peers.

As a guy that does research: it's not all that common, but some do it.

And some conferences (Mainly the ACC and B1G) require a school with great academics to join.

I saw this morning that the Big East is holding a conference call with all remaining members today and they possibly could invite some new members by evening. This should be interesting. There are so many rumors floating around about this school leaving, that school joining, and votes that I don't know what's legit and what isn't at this point.

I wonder if maybe Missouri's alleged vote rejection is because they haven't informed the conference they plan to leave yet. Maybe the SEC is just being sly again about the legalities. Or if they won't take another Big 12-3 team because they're still concerned Baylor will whine and sue them over it.

Could be. It may have never even happened. For example, I have yet to see any proof that WVU was originally rejected or accepted by a 10-2 vote like I have heard. Who knows?

They should just rename the conference C-USA+ or Conference USA Plus if they decide to keep this farce of a football conference going.

I doubt it. The SEC can only really get sued if they cause significant damage to the conference. A&M leaving almost did that. That's why they weren't officially accepted until the dust had settled. Missouri leaving isn't going to do that kind of damage at this point.

Even the teams that are leaving aren't that great. As the only ranked Big East team, WVU is flying the conference flag at this point as they await and invite from another conference I suppose.

exactly....for example, Oregon State just received $42 million in the past month in research grants and research contracts.

Kinda dwarfs that $20 million per year for the new TV contract.

And that's Oregon State. Think of how much the top tier schools make.
