It kind of is a new thing. Before this re-alignment mess got started there really wasn't anything wrong geographically with any of the conferences except for Louisiana Tech in the WAC. The first shifts of Colorado and Utah to the Pac-12 and Nebraska to the Big Ten were fine, but now it's gotten out of control.

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows
TCU has been in the MWC for years, and was in the WAC before that. And what about the Texas Schools and Arkansas being in the Southwest conference? Or Marquette being in the Big East. The geography isn't important, and I'm not sure why people are so hung up on it. The Cowboys are in the NFC East in the NFL, and no one bats an eye. In fact, if you discussed moving them to the South and say, the Panthers to the east, I'm sure people would flip. Why is this a big deal to anybody?
I really don't see a problem with it. Sure, it a little outta control with the geography, but as others have pointed out, geography isn't really part of it anymore.
Also, I've seen some people mention Big East East/West Division. The SouthEASTERN Conference has a East and West division. Just thought I'd point it out.

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows
Sure La Tech in the WAC or TCU in the MWC might have been a stretch, like Marquette in the Big East, but that's nowhere near to the extent of San Diego State to the Big East. It doesn't get more polar opposite than that.Comment

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows
Yeah but the difference is that in the SEC, whether you're in the east or west division, all the schools in the conference are still in the "south-eastern" part of the country. with the big east and san diego state, not all the teams in the conference are in the eastern part of the country, but rather one team is as far west as you could possibly go and another team is in the west also.

But again I ask, because no one has answered this question, why does it matter? If they changed the name to the coast to coast conference would it be okay? Who cares about the geography of it? Can the Big 12 get teams from wherever they want because they don't have a Nautical direction in their name?Comment

The Falcons and Panthers were in the old NFC West. The Cardinals were in the NFC East. Tampa Bay was in the NFC Central. The Braves played in the NL West.
It's just a name.I write things on the Internet.

Boise State won't be able to take partial qualifiers anymore. I wonder how that will affect their recruiting?Comment

Air Force says they're not going. Now by most accounts, Temple was the next choice, so for our amusement, let us all sit back and watch the Big East go crawling back to Temple less than 10 years after kicking them out.Comment

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows
We are in a small market. Apparently the size of the school's market is the most important factor, never mind the actual amount of people interested in the school's athletics in said market. We have averaged 49,000+ these past 2 mediocre years, and have a plan of expanding another 8,000 seats if we need them. We have also done major renovations with track, soccer, baseball, softball, and are raising funds for a new practice facility for basketball. As I said a couple of pages back, we have done all we possibly can.
Though the funny thing is a large amount of our alumni are located in Charlotte, Raleigh, and the Tidewater. Which are large markets.favorite teams
