ND is not going to a conference that just gives the 3rd party rights away for nothing. Swofford needs to be fired for the ACC to stay together, but because UNC and other NC schools have too much control, that won't happen.

If you didn't see it in recent weeks, Swofford recommended only fining UNC $100,000 for all their NCAA violations. He was one of the people who fought to get Clemson's penalty extended by the ACC in the 80s. The fine was voted down 7-4 and nothing will be done to UNC.

East-Florida, Georgia, Virginia Tech, NC State, Kentucky, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, South Carolina.
West-Texas A&M, LSU, Missouri, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Miss State, Auburn, and Alabama...holy heck

I would have to agree with CHooe's analysis on UVa and VT. They're by all appearances tied at the hip, and I prefer it that way. At the same time, it may cause problems in conference realignment for the two to be a package deal.

I just really don't see the SEC taking NC State. We'll see. In some ways, I'd like it, but it would be awful to lose the rivalries with Duke, UNC, etc.

Twitter seems to be abuzz with "SEC will target VT if FSU turns them down" picking up some steam lately, but the rumors really don't consider the political climate of the state.

Both Virginia and Virginia Tech are valuable assets to the Commonwealth for reasons beyond college athletics. Depending on who you ask, UVa is at-worst the second-best public four-year college in the country, and Virginia Tech is one of the best engineering schools in the country, ranked ahead of UVa in most engineering areas. Unless the political attitude has changed drastically from the previous round of expansion with regard to how they value their highest-ranking public education institutions (along with the College of William and Mary, albeit to a lesser extent with regard to national visibility), the state government is not going to sit idly by and let either one take a huge blow to its marketability.

I really think the ACC is a lot safer than people want to give it credit for. They've arguably been the most proactive conference throughout this era of expansion and have built up a position of reasonable strength, in determining which one must take into account things beyond the current quality of each program's football team.

The ACC earns about 17 million a year per team with it's TV Deal. I doubt the BE can get that, and if they do, the ACC should try to rework theirs. The ACC has much bigger media teams. They have national fan-bases, like VTech, Clemson, FSU, and The U (For Football). The only team the BE has with a large national following is probably Boise State. And once their Cinderella run ends, the BE will not have anyone outside of some basketball schools and geographical oddities.

Yes but the Big East has teams in very large markets and NBC wants a college football TV deal. Those will drive up the price.

Open question, because I haven't been following college football for as long as many of you:

Have conference alignments always been this volatile? It seems like we have to deal with some combination of teams jumping ship every year now.

I think the period with the collapse of the Southwest Conference and the Big East exodus trumps the current period so far. Another round of expansion will make this period bigger, though.

By the way, are you a Virginia student/alum?

I went to UVa, as did my brother, my dad, and a few of my cousins. There's definitely a family connection to the school

I'm not concerned really insofar as to where UVa will end up - the school is too good of one to be left out for all the reasons that don't involve football - but I'd prefer the current state of affairs over any potential change.

College football has always been volatile environment, but thanks to the BCS, its reached new levels.

I'm afraid all those other reasons don't matter so much for conference alignment. Schools don't partner for academics based on conference alignment, and academic prestige doesn't add dollars to the athletic department,

Also I'll add that Michigan is what you get when you combine Berkeley engineering with UVa law and medicine :P.
