Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows

I feel like this is all on the NCAA. In the past they should have really put restrictions on conferences and conference alignment, but there is so much money in it at the top they completely ignore the detriment all this movement does to the lower conferences. The WAC is done, it wont be long until C-USA or the Big East take enough that the Sun Belt will struggle to exist.

It's amazing what large dollar amounts can do to people. All of the traditions can easily be thrown out the window for a pile of cash.

Like others I see in the not so distant future a division 1 NCAA Football landscape consisting of 5 super conferences consisting of 16 teams making the rest of the teams irrelevant creating a bigger divide than there already is.

Grand Canyon State (has anyone ever heard of this school?) to the WAC.

You can't make this stuff up.

It's a D2 school in Arizona. They actually have a decent football program, but it's a bit ridiculous that they'll be D1 in a couple of years.

THey don't play football. They are joining the WAC along with powerhouses Cal State Bakersfield, Seattle University, and Utah Valley State.

To be fair GCU has very good DII athletics programs. A lot nationally ranked.

I'm not bashing them. I'm just stating what went into the decision. I actually interviewed for Grad School at U of L. That place is doing some special things that is often overlooked by the bluebloods on the East Coast. It's not how you and I view them, it's how college presidents view them.

If that was the case West Virginia would have joined the ACC ten years ago. Academics are not THE factor, but it is A factor

Yes, but WVU was ranked #165 in that US News and World Report everyone loves to cite, so UL and WVU are virtually identical in that regard, yet that was the publicized reason WVU was rejected.

NC State has the lowest academic ranking in the ACC at the moment at #106. Of course, like most of these rankings, that can be a bit deceptive as NC State has one of the better engineering and veterinary programs in the country. The humanities side certainly is lacking, though.

Circumstances have certainly changed. I'm sure the ACC would gladly accept WVU today.

Those rankings can be kind of silly in some cases. Arkansas State University moved up from Regional Tier 3 to Tier 1 in a single year because we started reporting donations properly and very slightly raised admission standards. Not because we were suddenly better at educating students.

I'm just hoping re-alignment ends sometime soon. All this switching around has me scrambling to a reference to know which conference a school is playing in.

Anyways um, good pick up for the ACC?

My bad Ehh. I think what hurt UCONN was the fan base size and perception. UCONN has been very successful over the past 20 years. However, the APR issue probably didn't help UCONN"s case either.

Somebody wrote today that U of L's athletic budget will the largest in the ACC before they even play in the conference. That is a susprise for sure.
