That's why I say the ACC and Big 12 should merge and drop the bad football teams. Top to bottom, they could then challenge the SEC.Comment

Yep the SEC doesn't want to add potential top football teams. Doing that would upset the current top dogs in the conference. They want to add teams that will be middle to bottom of the conference with a once in every 5-10 year good team.

Same thing for the Big 12. I've baseless speculated for awhile now that the ball is in Florida State and Clemson's court. If those schools bail for the Big 12, you'll see the SEC go after Virginia Tech and a North Carolina school. Then all the cards will be on the table. The Big Ten will see what Notre Dame does (go to the Big 12 or apply to the Big Ten) and then add some combination of Virginia and Notre Dame or Virginia and a North Carolina school.
Why does the Big 12 survive instead of the ACC? Football. Football drives everything, and the Big 12 has two of the highest revenue football programs in the country. That will pull them through. The ACC doesn't have anything of the sort.NFL: Indianapolis Colts (12-6)

Exactly. There will be no movement in the ACC until the 50 million is resolved with Maryland."If you have a linebacker on him, you might as well start singing their fight song." -- WSU coach Bill Doba on Reggie Bush

Academics as a qualifier may officially be dead for the Pac-12.
Larry Scott says they will be keeping an eye on Boise State and San Diego State in case of bigger expansion plans. they also don't have any plans to expand at the moment.

I miss the days when it was all geographical and meant something.Comment

I don't understand why people are obsessed with geography in sports leagues. I just don't get why that should matter in this day and age.Comment

For over a century, college sports were a regional ideal with local long standing rivalries. Some people still want that local feeling (but then clamor for playoffs; go figure).Rangers - Cowboys - Aggies - Stars - Mavericks

Well I feel that if they created a playoff system that was fair to all conferences, you wouldn't have a problem like this. But no school wants to be left out in the cold now. So you get this mess. Then again, nothing in college football can be deemed fair.GIVING YOU QUIET CONFIDENCE SINCE '81!

Then you have all the sports that aren't money makers that need the close geography to save money as well as create the same rivalries. Recruiting in those sports is even more geographical than football and basketball.
In pro sports geography isn't as important as the players have no official tie to the location or the region.NHL: Vegas Golden Knights
NCAAF: Ohio State
NFL: Minnesota Vikings
MLB: Chicago CubsComment

Natural rivalries. Especially in college sports. Same recruiting pools creates familiarity as well as hatred. Guys in the same area can hold a grudge against a school that didn't recruit them.

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows
Also if you look at the rosters of every BCS team they aren't national recruits. A majority of the roster is regional with a few guys from across the country added in. The bigger the program the more out of region recruits. Ohio State and Michigan both have plenty of Ohio players on the roster and players from the midwest even if they add in talent from California, Florida, and Texas.NHL: Vegas Golden Knights
