Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows
CBS Sports is reporting the Big East media rights deal will be worth between 60-80 million. The Basketball schools will more than likely have to take a pay cut from the current 1.5 million a year they get of tv money to 1.1 to 1.4 million. The Full members including Houston and Memphis would get 4-5 million a year.
This along with the additon of Tulane is leading to the possible break away of the Big East basketball schools.

This Tulane thing is Media Bull****. The basketball schools voted Tulane in. They also wont get anywhere near the amount of TV money if they break away.Last edited by dickey1331; 12-11-2012, 06:17 PM.MLB: Texas Rangers

I hope the league dissolves, it would be nice for Rutgers to get out without paying a penny.
Hell, the rest of the schools are still waiting for their share of the exit $$$ promised from WVU, Pitt, Cuse, TCU.Comment

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows
These schools get no access to the football money and are losing value on the basketball part of the deal now that WVU, Syracuse, Pitt and Notre Dame have all annouced they are leaving the league. On top of that even if they got some of the football money that was planned; Boise State, Houston, USF and UCF Football can't alone can't make up the difference of what they would have made 2 years ago with fewer schools to share the pot with. That value has been cut in 1/2 with 20 people now to share the money with.
When it comes to Tulane, once your conference commish settles on expansion targets, more times than not the schools roll with it. UNC and Duke truly wanted UCONN in, but the ACC office in Greensboro settled on Louisville and they were admitted. I'm sure they were "No votes" on Tulane unofficially, but were Yes votes officially because no league annouces that a school joined the league with a bunch of no votes. That totally decreases that school's credibility once it joins and make it unstable in that new league.Last edited by cdawg44; 12-11-2012, 10:27 PM."If you have a linebacker on him, you might as well start singing their fight song." -- WSU coach Bill Doba on Reggie Bush

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows
It doesn't matter at this point. These schools will go backwards on money earned once the new tv deal comes in. They would be better off if they left and joined up with some of the A10 schools and probably make a little more than they are now. When the Big East turned down that tv deal in the Summer of 2011 where they would have been close to the ACC deal, they sealed their own fate. The catholic schools figure if they break off and let the football schools do what they want at this point they can regain some leverage for themselves.

Big East is pretty close to dying right now. A-10 apparently picking up the Catholic b-ball schools if they leave. That would make them the A-21.Conference Realignment Guides: NCAA 12-14, College Football 25Comment

There's no incentive for those schools to join the A-10, they'll start fresh and poach a few schools for a 12 team league - like most reports are indicating. The A-10 TV deal pays something like $400k annually, the projected Catholic league would be around $1M."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

The Catholic 7 isn't doing this solely for financial reasons, they want a normal conference again with a reasonable geographic spread."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

That's only a rumor, Gonzaga travelling all their sports to the East cost regularly isn't going to happen. Realistically, Creighton is as far west as they'll go.

Gonzaga and Saint Mary's would only be for basketball even if they got an invite which I doubt. They have plenty of good catholic squads to choose from including Xavier, Butler and others."If you have a linebacker on him, you might as well start singing their fight song." -- WSU coach Bill Doba on Reggie Bush

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows
I did all the math. The average cost of a commercial flight from Spokane, WA to the 8 other WCC schools is $346. The average cost in the rumored 13 team Catholic Conference would be $449. That's per Expedia, so we're talking commercial flights, out of a fairly remote Airport. So, it's an imperfect science, obviously. I'm just trying to get a ballpark here. So this new conference would cost 29% more, travel-wise (again, very imprecise, but the concept is still there).
Now I'm not sure how much a WCC team gets. But a Forbes article about a year and a half ago (3/2011) has WCC basketball revenue at just $2.2 million per school. Basically, if a 13 team national Catholic Conference could get the same approximate revenue as the Missouri Valley Conference ($2.8m), it could offset Gonzaga's travel cost increase. And this conference would be likely to get more than that. I think they could get more than the Mountain West ($3.8m) or A-10 ($4m). The next team on the list was the Pac 10 at $8m, but I'm pretty sure they're doing more now.Comment
