I know it would never happen but sports wise, it would be a lot of fun.
You're not crazy. All this re-alignment is what is crazy! North Carolina is in the "South East" portion of the country, so it would make more logical sense for them to be in the South Eastern conference, as opposed to the mid-western conference!

But what I don't get is how it's become an either or. (SEC or Big10) How about NC's rivalries in the...ACC...you know the conference they have been in since it was established in 1953!

How about Duke vs UNC in basketball? Like isn't that a rivalry or something? I mean, sure South Carolina vs North Carolina, border rivalry, i get that. but how is that more important then in-state rivalries they've been playing for decades and decades?

In a side note, is anyone still alive out there? does anyone find the fact that the Big10 is referred to as the "B1G" annoying? now that it's no where near 10 teams, wouldn't it make more sense to call it the Mid Western Conference now? only problem is it's 3 digit moniker would be the same as the Mountain West. oh and the fact that Rutgers and Maryland aren't in the Mid-West!!!!

Only thing about realignment is money. All common sense went out the window a long time ago. SMU used to be in the WAC. Didn't make sense back then either.

You are preaching to the choir here man. I remember watching those early morning ACC battles even before they had FSU. Things just seem inevitable now. At least UNC in the SEC would make some sense. It would show that they are serious about football and would keep a ton of in state talent by going to the superior football conference. Plus there are huge UGA/UF fanbases in the Carolinas that would really travel.

As a Buckeye here in Charlotte, I would argue that Ohio State has an enormous presence here in the state. Even Penn State and Michigan as well. A lot of people from those areas have been relocating to the QC and bring their allegiances with them.

Charlotte has a lot of transplants. The city has grown so much over the last 20 years and a lot of it is influx from the northeast as Charlotte became a huge banking city.

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows

Not just Charlotte but the south in general is full of transplants. The south has greatly benefited since the 1950s with air conditioning and a lot of sprawl building that came with it over the past 60 years. Most of the transplants would probably leave in a heartbeat if for some reason they didn't have cheap and easy access to AC.

There is a reason the south (basically anything south of Virginia) was a relative backwater until the 20th century (this is a generalization, exceptions exist). Great for agrarian society due to its climate; terrible for industrial and post industrial for the same reasons.

I would never want to be caught dead south of Maryland in the summer without AC.

it sure does have real balance issues. as i've said before, the BigTen was never meant to be split into divisions. Nebraska was never meant to be a BigTen team. it happened, but like most of this re-alignment, makes no logical football sense. it was just a forced decision to get to 12 teams so Delany can make more money with a CCG, which by the way has been an utter failure if you look at the last 2 years. before the divisions and CCG, BigTen teams were competing for national titles, but neither of the B1G CCGs have had any national title significance - it made money, sure but it also served absolutely no purpose. (obviously OSU and PSU ineligible played a role in that, but i also think there was a karma factor as a result of the leaders vs legends announcement)

you had the 6th best team in the BigTen (Wisconsin) beat a team Nebraska, that isn't a BigTen team for the "championship", in a game with absolutely no defense (BigTen used to pride itself on its teams having great defense), in a game in a half empty dome, in a conference that is known for cold weather outdoor November games. for anyone that used to love the BigTen, this conference is just a complete shell of its former self in more ways than one. that said, it's not as if the conference doesn't have good teams. it still does. Michigan State, even with 6 losses, managed to beat Boise State in the opening week, and had an incredible comeback win last night against TCU. i don't think what has happened to the BigTen is fair to the teams in it. Delany has made a mockery of a conference that was respected top to bottom prior to expansion.

Hopefully San Diego State changes their mind too.

Big East will have 11 next year now? Bummer for them, they thought they were going to have divisions and a championship game and all that. Psych!

Mountain West would have 11 as well with San Jose State and Utah State joining too? What a mess.

I hold out hope for SMU to join the PAC 12. That's the most likely place if they got to a Big 5 conference.

Won't ever happen as long as Stanford, UCLA, USC and Cal are members. Any religious school is persona non grata in the PAC-12. Case in point, see BYU. The perfect fit but they are Mormon affliated.
