Sign stealing could be easy now if you trained some model to predict what the play was by inputting the historical play calls. You get video from every game for scouting now so in person scouting isn't needed and is actually less informative than the videos of the games. The videos are even categorized by formation, scenario, players, etc.

You won't find video of the signals though and would have to try and zoom in to see them from the all 22 cameras.

Sparty threatened to boycott the game lol

Idunno how many people caught PTI today but Wilbon told Sparty to shut up. I mean, he tells everyone to shut up, but it was a fun punctuation to the episode.

After watching their first half performance against Michigan, it looks like they followed through with that boycott.

Suspended Michigan staffer Connor Stalions, who is at the center of the NCAA's sign-stealing probe, purchased tickets in his own name for more than 30 games over the past three years at 11 different Big Ten schools, multiple sources told ESPN.

I was just about to post this. That's game over.

An opposing Big Ten school looked up in-stadium surveillance video from a game earlier this year, and sources said the person in the seat of the ticket purchased by Stalions held his smart phone up and appeared to film the home team's sideline the entire game.
But also this gets sticky as hell. Because anyone could do that for future games. But if there is a paper and money trail. It's a done deal.

NCAA has a rule that Jim doesn't even have to know or be involved to be suspended. If it happen under his command. It's on him. Which really sucks. I wonder if your suspend coach now or vacate some wins now lol

That would hurt. A season where Michigan may very well be the best team in the country, gets derailed by spygate.

Still doesn't feel like the NCAA has a smoking gun, not that has stopped them before.

Feels odd they've looked so hard into this when Michigan isn't the first or only program to be known to steal signals. Clemson was notorious for it while Venables was there.

They have them on video and videos from a laptop. They have everything they need and will probably have more once the teams identify the tickets purchased and then review security video.

They have it happening for multiple seasons. Right now they can vacate all years they have ticket purchases for. Then ban them from post-season for this year and the same number of seasons they have proof of tickets purchased.

If I was the Big Ten, I wouldn't wait for the NCAA. You have a chance of UM hurting your conference by winning and then getting banned before the end of the season. They should move to immediately remove them from conference championship contention.

                    Re: College Football Off Topic

I think my understanding of this is missing something so this question is very genuine.

Anyone who knows me, knows I'm not a UM fan.

Can anyone explain to me what is wrong with what they're accused of doing? Teams switched to these cards instead of calling plays the old fashioned way for a reason but that's been the evolution of the game.

I can't imagine they are the only team who has scouted their opponents ahead of time and I would be surprised if checking out the signals wasn't part of scouting process.

I guess I've just always assumed that the play cards are adjusted weekly because its assume that anyone can see them.

I mean, they could just hire someone not associated with the staff to do the same thing this person is doing no? Shouldn't it be on the team to change up their cards if that's the way they want to call plays?

Please tell me what I'm missing and understand I'm not trying to defend Michigan because I don't care. I just don't get it.

Kehlis when this was first announced. I felt the same way. You could send my grandmother with a cell phone and she could copy the game with tripod if you showed how to use all this. But there are 2 levels that they broke without a doubt in my mind. Teams have always exchanged tapes. Which goes back to the start of video recording (All 22 footage). But in 1994 (I read this so many times) As a cost cutting measure and to make it my fair for all types of teams. They banned in-person scouting. Because both teams shared tapes already. So there is no needs for in person scouting. But because teams don't have the expensive radio system the NFL uses (fairness to the teams without the budget). Teams still need to send signals into the game. Recording these signals is against the rules. So not only is the program they were running against the rules (by sending people). But secondary rules to recording those signals.

My guess is those play cards aren't changed that much from week to week. Maybe small adjustment. Some times they have 2 different teams or people signaling. I could imagine if you too de-code them it wouldn't take that much of an effort. Especially if you have built a database of previous play calls.

I think the problem is they have made the connection. This guy has purchases on his credit card to past games (dating back at least 3 years) and not to mention videos of these people he sent recording games (he always got them seats at the 45 yard line). That's game over in my book. They can't even hide it.

Plus the using technology to aid in signal stealing. There is also potentially more if they used AI or something else to help decode the signals but so far it doesn't seem there is any proof of that.
