This is basically the national championship game and I think it is only fitting that John Navarre ends his career at Michigan with a win in the Rose Bowl over the #1 ranked team in the nation. He will not disappoint the Wolverine faithful on January 1, 2004 in Pasadena, as Michigan squeaks out a 31-28 win.

Hey, but there are two flaws in your arugments about Michigan being better on special teams. USC's punter Tom Malone averages 50 yards a kick and Reggie Bush is also a game breaker on kickoff returns. Spend too much time worrying about Mike Williams and Kerry Colbert, Bush will burn you.

True about the special teams they are actually pretty even. MAlone is a great punter, and Reggie Bush is as explosive as any player in the country whether it's coming out of the backfiled, lining up split wide or returnning kicks. He's one of those rare players who not only has incredible quickness and moves, but also has sub 10.8 100 speed.

Re: Official USC - Michigan \"Rose Bowl Discussion thread\"

Everyone is missing the biggest part of the gameplan. First, I would like to say I respect Michigan very much and root for them a lot, I think they may be my favorite Big-10 team (I hate OSU). This game is going to be tough it's not a gimme, but I do think USC will come out on top. USC's defense rely on getting turnovers and turning those into points. This has allowed USC to get out to leads of 2+ TDs. When a team is able to do this they can then control the clock, which is what they have been able to do, and if you get a big play and score then you aren't controlling the clock, but you are now up 3+ TDs.

Yes, Michigan is an elite team and is the best team USC has faced, but I don't think they are any better on offense as some of the team USC has faced. They have a great RB, but USC stopped all of Auburns, Steven Jackson, and Julius Jones (right after his 200 yd game). Perry may be better than all of those guy's but USC doesn't give up rushing yards (with the exception of Echamandu). He is the only 100 yard rusher against USC in 2 years. I do think USC will shut down the run and get out to a lead with turnovers, which will force Michigan to air it out. Navarre is good, but not great and Edwards is a good WR, but USC was able to play Reggie Williams who had a good game against USC, but they will force Michigan to lock on him and they are still able to control the game. He is no better than Reggie Williams. USC has faced teams in the PAC-10 that air it out thats why their passing defense numbers look so bad. They force teams out of the run and teams average 40+ passes a game against them. Plus, USC doesn't use their DBs as much to stop the pass, they use their Defensive Line to put pressure on the QB to make a bad decision and they ALWAYS do, which lead to Interceptions which USC had in every game except 1.

USC did a nice job against Jackson. I think I read somewhere they are giving up like 2.4 yards per rushing attempt. But don't quote me on that.

Thing is, with a month for both teams to prepare, who knows what we'll see come game time, and that's what scares me. If they were to play with a week or two preparation, I think USC wins for sure. But with a month between games anything can happen. Who will gameplan better, Lloyd Carr and his staff, or Pete Carroll and Norm Chow? That is now even more of a key than it would be in a regular season game.

It is something like that. Maybe closer to maybe 3 yards a carry. Hey but Norm Chow is a genious. do you remeber those BYU teams circa 1984??? I think if they played last week, Michigan would have the egde because Perry would have been playing his heart for the Heisman. Give Pete Carroll a month to come up with a defensive sceme, they will be a lot better. When USC loses, It is more about execution problems and basic fundementals than coaching.

Everyone talks about how USC Secondary is weak and how many yards they give up, but did you guys ever think about how USC always removes their starters in the third quarter and the other teams pad their stats. And you are right USC only rushes 4 guys and can drop 7 into coverage. All USC needs is turnovers and the game is over. Look at the turnover margain, that will be the story of the game.
