JRT, feel free to hit me up if you get stuck with anything in Access. I'm a database geek and can try to lend a hand. A few years ago, I did a database for my playbooks to generate a playcall sheet. It's pretty simple but I still use it and it helps me organize my thoughts a bit. Loving your tools this year so would be happy to contribute to next year's project if you need.

Its a learn as I go process for me, i know basics, when i get to the advanced stuff I'm usually doing a lot of research. Re: JRT2006's Madden Scouting Tool
I haven't even reached the averaging of ratings yet, but Im more than open to any ideas. like the last tool, when i get there I want it to be community involvedOriginally posted by CloudFuelJRT, I ran into a bit of difficulty back in the day with trying to understand your methods so I ended up continuing to work on my own tool and came up with a different way of averaging out the important traits. If you're interested, I would be glad to send it to you to see if there's anything you might find useful in it.
Through testing so many different drafts, I've gotten to the point where I really don't even have to use it anymore... it's all pretty much memorized. I hope they tweak the scouting process in the future. It just feels too easy now to find all of the best players with very limited SP used.Comment

Sure thing, man. It's a lot more simple than JRT's stuff but it does what I need it to. Will try to get that to you soon.Woodjer could I see your database playbook? That sounds real interesting, you can email me at [email protected].PSN: JWGoNDComment

Re: JRT2006's Madden Scouting Tool
Update:
So I've got the tables and forms built for the scouting portion of the upcoming tool.
My vision is upon opening the tool, you will be advised (via popup) to head to the 'Positions' form where you will enter your valued skills for each position.
Unlike the previous tool where I decided the skills that were important for scouting and you decided which ones you wanted to scout, you now choose the skills you want to scout for each position, and the importance of each skill. Also available on the form is position need (Highest, High, Medium, Low) which you can go back into and select whenever as its hard to determine at the beginning of the season.
After setting your positions, you can then go to the rosters, salaries, or scouting.
Now, before I begin doing all the math for the values, I'd like to open the thread to discussions on how it should be done. The option to keep it the same is there, but I know CloudFuel said he developed some methods for evaluating that I'd like to hear as well.
Also, as far as team needs, how should those be judged. High, Medium, Low or Significant Reach, Slight Reach, BPA, Value Pick or Immediate Starter(High Reach), Future Starter (Slight Reach), BPA, and DepthComment

Re: JRT2006's Madden Scouting Tool
I like what we had but there is always room to improve and fine tune. So I look forward to see what CloudFuel has going. Worst case is you don't use any of it. Best case it is better then what we came up with.

Re: JRT2006's Madden Scouting Tool
Developing the Home Screen right now.
The Home Screen will consist of two windows (one on the left of the screen and one on the right). In the middle will be quick links to take you to each screen separately (Rosters, Salary, Scouting, Position Needs, Attribute Value, etc)
On the first page I've added a poll to see what users will favor as far as the two screens on the Home Screen. What information do you find most important when managing a franchise in madden. Please vote if you do and/or dont use the tool as I'm curious either way. If you want to argue you vote, please do so in a response to the thread without creating conflict with other posters.
Roster Info will display user inputted roster information
-Roster information will include Name, Position, and Value(if you input the players skills)
Salary Info will display user inputted salary information
-Salary information will include current Salary Cap situation along with roster displaying player name, position, contract terms, and years left
Scouting Information will display Prospects you have scouted
-Scouting Information will rank your scouted prospects in order of highest value to lowest
Team Needs Info will display user inputted needs for positions
-Team Needs Info will include positions along with the user selected Need priority. (I will look into a way to calculate this automatically based on certain factors that the user inputs; i.e. User inputs required players per position, tool evaluates rosters and salary then determines if positions is needed)
Upcoming Free Agents will display players on your team who will become free agents after the year
-Upcoming Free Agents will display Player Name, Position, Value(if user inputted skills).Last edited by JRT2006; 05-04-2015, 12:49 PM.Comment

Re: JRT2006's Madden Scouting Tool
So I voted based on the question asked and said Team Needs/Roster combo.
However, if I'm envisioning your idea correctly, what about this idea?
Left side: Menu screen with buttons to generate various reports (value sheet, big board, salary, etc.) or update a player's record
Right side: Form to add a player to the database. Have the basic data that you would collect (name, position, anything else); a radio button that allows you to select whether the player should go on your roster or scouting (maybe a third option for scouting current NFL players, too); and then a series of dropdown menus that allow you to select the skill followed by a box to enter the value...and of course anything else that you might want to add to your tool
Doing it this way would allow a user to quickly generate whatever report is needed at the time and provides a quick way to enter players as you scout them. So, rather than having a couple screens that are set for everyone, keep the reports/tools at the forefront and allow the user to navigate on their own. A couple notes on the "form" side of things...
- You could potentially have a dropdown menu for the name field. I haven't played with Access forms in a LONG time but the idea would be that it could fill in some of the known information so you can just update the record. This would require you to have a primary key for each player but that's easily added/created by Access.
- Again, I'd have to play around with it but there may be a way to have certain skills show up on the form based on the position that you select. Or maybe it would need to take you to a second form that does that. Like I said, I haven't used these in a while so maybe it's not even possible at all.
Hope this helps.PSN: JWGoNDComment

Re: JRT2006's Madden Scouting Tool
The idea i was getting at was a main screen (Home Screen) which would have all of your buttons to quickly go to various areas of the tool (Current Roster, Salary Situation, Upcoming Free Agents, Scouting, Free Agent Scouting, and Various Reports as you mentioned. But on the main screen i wanted to put quick access viewing to two of what would be the most important areas of the tool. So, if you thought that Team Needs and Current Roster where the most important things to manage your franchise, as soon as you open the tool, it takes you to the home screen. On the left you see your current rosters, on the right you see your current team needs, in the middle you have your buttons to access the management of all the areas or generate reports.
The problem is figuring out what is the most important. many users who use the tool may not want to put in the effort to manually input their entire rosters along with salary information every year, so the home screen would be blank besides the buttons.
I'll fiddle around with it some more, just trying to make it as user friendly as possible
Currently I have it set up to force users to input skills they want to scout per position along with skill weights upon opening the tool, since that is pretty much the backbone of the tool, Scouting. Without entering that information, nothing works the way it should.Comment

Re: JRT2006's Madden Scouting Tool
That may be what I end up doing, pretty much a 'Main Screen' that gives you the option to jump to different 'Home Screens', Management and Scouting.Originally posted by CloudFuelI see where you're going with that, but like you said it's hard to customize it to fit everyone's needs. What about just having a main (home) screen where you can choose either scouting or roster management and THEN it takes you to a secondary home screen (depending on what you choose) with all of the options associated with your choice?
Both Home Screens with have a button to quickly jump from one to the other.Comment

Re: JRT2006's Madden Scouting Tool
Thats probably the layout I will follow. it will allow users who only want to use the scouting portion to do so, and users who want to get in depth with rosters and such do so as well.Originally posted by CloudFuel
I've got a million ideas running through my head that i get lost in the moment when working on this thing. I'll stop progress on one thing, and start to build something different to see if I can make it happen. its crazy.
just hope i get it done in time for the game so I can make the necessary changes shortly after its released.
An access guru would have this knocked out in a week I bet.Comment
