Wow, this week 1 game is going to be a tough one to follow. After a slow first quarter, the Jaguars capitalized on every opportunity they were presented with in the 2nd quarter, scoring an astounding 31 points - including a pick six on the final play of the half to cap it all off. Jacksonville scored just 7 points in the 2nd half, but it was more then enough to win the game. Matt Ryan had a historic performance, completing his first 21 passes of the game, finishing with 23 completions on 24 attempts for 266 yards and 3 TDs. His favorite target was Antonio Gates who had 7 receptions for over 100 yards. Demarco Murray managed to get 188 yards on the ground thanks largely to 2 huge runs of over 60 yards including one on a 3rd and 22. The offense compiled 432 yards total.
As for the Texans, Carson Palmer seemed off all game, finishing with 61% completion rate and 2 INTs. He made several inaccurate throws. Part of the reason for his performance has to be attributed to the pressure all night from DE Carlos Dunlap who had a staggering 10 tackles and 5 total sacks in the game. Texans RT Jordan Mills got absolutely abused by the former Florida Gator all game long. Fletcher Cox and Karl Klug joined the party with sacks of their own. FS Lardarius Webb picked off another pass in the 2nd half to compliment his pick six in the first half. MLB Anthony Hitchens had 10 tackles.
DT Linval Joseph didn't fill the stat sheet but did a great job of clogging the middle and made life hard for HB Melvin Gordon of the Texans - who still finished with a solid stat line of 11 carries for 80 yards. Joseph and his fellow defensive tackle Fletcher Cox blew up a few plays in the backfield which hurt Houston's momentum on their drives. CB Logan Ryan was quiet and his name was not heard much, which is usually good for a cornerback. G Patrick Omameh gave up 2 sacks which was not a huge issue but if he strings together another game or 2 with similar outcomes it could become a problem. Overall the offensive line played pretty well.
