Re: Madden NFL 13 Demo Available Now, Post Your Impressions Here (360, PS3)

Here are my FULL impressions for M13.

    Gameplay

In M13, we are introduced to a couple of gameplay additions. Total Control Passing was one of them. While it was nice that I could control the type of pass I make, the new feature didn't really do that well, as when I was playing, there were times where I would flick the Right Stick on a deep bomb and the pass still sails to the middle of the field, or when my tight end is on a right out route, I see that he's being covered by Patrick Willis, so I try to lead him more to the sideline by flicking the LS to the right in an almost diagonal direction, the pass goes RIGHT TO Patrick Willis and he picks it off. There are also times where I try to through to a pass towards the receiver's right if he's lined up in the slot, and it's either tipped because it sails if I try to lob it, or it's picked because I try flick the LS to a certain direction. Overall, I found it dissatisfying.

The next feature is Read and React. It is nice, but to me, it was that much of a game changer given the overhaul to the passing game in general. It is a nice feature to have and should not be taken out next year, or next gen.

The all new menu for Pre-Snap/Pre-Play Adjustments, or if you want to call it the Strategy Pad, is a huge problem for me. It lags a lot if you are on defense, and there are times when you try to audible multiple times and it doesn't show up until about the 4th or 5th time you press it. For hot routes, there are certain times where you cannot hot route to a slant, I noticed. I am mixed on that. But going back to defense, there are times when you try to audible to like man, and then make it a blitz as a result of the lag or unresponsiveness. It seems like the best thing to do is not make any pre-play adjustments at all.

The biggest and most hyped up addition was the Infinity Engine. Real time tackling. New hits on the fly. Now, it felt good, sometimes. But about 60% of the time, the collisions, don't really make sense. I remember several times when a player is charging at full speed towards another player, and they both fell on their backs. Then add the twitching and falling and weird body movement post play. It seems as if with the new engine, it will be hard to strip, and there will also be a bit more suction tackling, every once in a while. I didn't really have many occasions where I tripped when running the ball. And there were numerous times when I run, and I was surprised to still see my player not tackled but instead stumbling awkwardly then falling. Overall, IE is a pretty needed addition, but it still needs a lot of work. Of course it's a demo where it won't be perfect. But playing the game itself, the IE didn't really feel like a game changer to me. It just felt like a couple of new tackle animations, some were good, others were not possible in real life.

The trenches. Where games are won and lost. Blocking. O-Line/D-line interactions and work where far from stellar, as we all expected. But my biggest concern was three things: Blocking A.I, Pocket Movement, and DE's. The blocking A.I. was usually bad in many scenarios. For example, it tends to happen when a guy that was supposed to be blocked shedded the block and he is open to tackle, for example, I remember on a counter where I was running with my HB and my FB was right there to block what I think was a OLB. But because the OLB was previously blocked and escaped, my FB didn't even attempt to block him, and instead blocked someone far away in the middle. In short, it's a classic case of the blocker not trying to block the guy in front of him, and instead going inside the scrum to block someone irrelevant. This also occurred on plays where I was standing with my QB, and the FB and HB that were supposed to block a free rusher who was RIGHT THERE didn't attempt and rotated somewhere else. Now, to address the next concern, which is pocket movement, I noticed then if I ever try to move with my QB, the O-Line, specifically the tackles for example, would sometimes simultaneously let go like as if it was scripted and I'd get sacked. O-line also seemed by on 2nd or 3rd and short situations where I'd tried to run up the middle. One could argue it was too easy in M12, but it seems too hard in M13. In real life is not that easy, but M13 replicates that in a different way. Blocking also seems significantly worse in Play Action. I always often see a free rusher zooming right to me. It's like as if they designed so that you always have to use the Abort PA feature. And last, DE's are still not effective enough. Nothing new. Overall, the blocking/line play seems worse in the demo than it did last year.

WR/DB interactions seem better. However, there are times where my Receivers can't catch a pass, and it seems that whenever a pass is tipped and it's in the air and five people are there and have a chance of getting the ball, they drop it and can't hold on to the ball. Also, CB's, OLB's, MLB's, and SS/FS's often still zoom to pick off passes. Not as much, but it still occurs on certain plays. This leads me to one of the other big issues I had with the gameplay.

Running animations, swerving, zig zagging, and player movement; All big issues, possibly the biggest issues Madden has had, and has in this demo. Too put it short, I don't need to juke - the juke move is bad by the way - but yeah, I don't need to juke anymore because of how I can turn on a dime, use my LS to swerve and shift a little bit to the right when a guy is trying to tackle me while running at light speed, or I can just let him run in a circle accidentally. That isn't good. I can move around in circles like in Madden 09 I could and get a Touchdown. It's hard to tackle a player because he can swerve. Say on a counter, your player is in front, and is kind of on the side: the RB can literally sneak through the space and run. That's all I need to say. The problem is that it got worse IMO.

    Other

The way the players and coaches look is kind of bad IMO. A lot of the coaches look buff (Pete Carroll for instance) and are not wearing what they wear in real life (Jim Harbaugh has been wearing Black sweater vests from College, through every game last year in the NFL, and even when he golfs as one a 49er fan said). The Player Models are kind of clunky, and the uniforms are inaccurate, for example, the Redskins throwbacks have the Redskins logo on the shoulders. Even Panthers fans complained in another thread about the shoulder stripes. However player faces look may be irrelevant since we don't see them in the actual game, but if they are gonna show the main players in that pre game cinematic intro, they should get it right, which they didn't, as Alex Smith looked like a 50 year old, and Bills fans complained as they didn't even give Ryan Fitzpatrick his beard, and has dark blonde hair (they gave him blackish hair). Like I said, we don't see their faces in the real game, but if they are gonna show it up close, it wouldn't hurt to get it right. I like the uniform dirt effect though. And the lighting effects were pretty good for the most part, it's just that game itself looked dim.

The New Commentary team featuring Jim Nants and Phil Simms (sorry if I'm spelling it wrong) includes commentary that should be good hopefully in the retail version, as in the demo, they are often saying things that don't match what's going on (for example, I threw a pass out of bounds and they said it was a bad throw). I like how they sound but the words they say don't help.

    Verdict

Madden NFL 13 offers new additions to the gameplay experience. While these additions are meant to further improve the gameplay, some such as the IE either don't make that much of a difference or aren't implemented good enough; granted it's a demo, and it's the first year, so not too much blame should be thrown at how the IE looks. The Total Control Passing needs work in my opinion. For the Running Animations/Player Movement and Blocking and O-Line/D-line interactions, they are probably the weakest parts of the game. One would say how the players or coaches look is fine or is nitpicking, but hey, the tech is there, and instead of getting it wrong, why not get it right (that's how I feel, and of course it isn't easy but it shouldn't be too hard). The commentary of course is good but needs work. The strategy pad needs work and could be major issue if not addressed IMO. All in all, if I were to give a score for the demo, I would give it a 6.5 out of 10. I feel as if it wasn't as good as I hoped. It isn't bad. It doesn't have to be perfect either; just good, which it isn't IMO.

I understand that there will always be people who won't enjoy this game, and they have every right not to. But to me this demo is fantastic.

The NEW physics engine makes the game so much different. Receivers actually go up for the ball and not rocket catch style. I threw a deep pass to Randy Moss and took control to make him go right over Antrell Rolls and his momentum carried him into the endzone. It's great to see tall receivers have an advantage over small corners.

I have seen instances where players just run into eachother for a tackle, but it's a brand new system. It's going to have some flaws. And they are extremely minor. The guys at EA disappointed for the first 5 or 6 years (to 10 or 11). Now 13 looks like the direction I've been looking for. Madden 05 was the last great Madden game. 13 is looking like the next to me. 12 was very good, but the catching has been a huge gripe for me. So far I love it this year.

Straw, you are aware that Total Control Passing is Left Stick, not right stick, correct. It says Right Stick in your review.

          Just an FYI.

We genuinely don't like it. Is any game perfect? No. But there is nothing even close to "sim" about this demo. Graphics and animations are cartoony as all get out. AI is completely incompetent. Physics don't apply to runners, which allows all players to change direction at will with no regards to physics and momentum. This game isn't sim, it's NFL Jam.

Funny... I don't agree with any of that and I consider myself a simulation oriented guy. Hell, I just bought NCAA, kept it for 8 hours and took it to trade for Madden 13.... Felt it played more like an arcade game than sim..

Madden's graphics are excellent! This review couldn't be farther from the truth.

Can a GC try to ffind out how old the build is? It would go a long way towards finding out where they are at with the new engine.

If the demo build is 2 months old then i have high hopes for the final product but if its 2 weeks old then they could be looking at disaster.

I hear you, when one of the loyal customers speaks up and is not happy about something, I would expect some customer satisfaction in return.

The tackling, ugh................, not all the time, but in replays, it looks like they spaghetti arms.

Agreed. Thus why I said weeks ago that the physics need to be controlled in order for the game to even resemble something realistic. Some people prefer the loosey-goosey physics b/c it can lead to more wow plays. Not me -- give me a more controlled version of physics if that's what it's going to take for the game to continue looking realistic.

There are definitely times when the tackling looks weird but the physics engine makes for such a big improvement in the way tackles feel when playing the game that I don't really mind it if sometimes looks a bit out of place.

I would rather have something that feels good in gameplay that might not look great than something that looks great that I couldn't feel (e.g.: gameplay that's too influenced by canned animations).

Since this is the first year that they added the physics engine, and since I feel that the gameplay is a BIG improvement because of it, I can definitely let the occasional weird flopping and twisting after plays slide (at least for this year).

I had to make sure this wasn't a knock off poster with a similar name lol, he went hard on that post.

On topic, o enjoy this demo with hopes that the issues are just purely from a demo standpoint.

But just to be clear...this "DEMO" version of Madden even today, as un-refined as the it is, still plays better than EVERY PREVIOUS VERSION OF MADDEN so far.
I think many of you out there need to have some patience. This is the beginning of a long road to get the game to where it needs to be.
Ok...I am a positive gamer. I am probably one of the most forgiving sports gamers on the planet as fun factor is my first priority. Given that Madden is and has always been fun for me.

But since we went to this gen of consoles....the game forthe exception of Madden 10 has been a huge let down. This is not the best version of Madden.....no way. I will never make a claim like that off a demo. When the full retial version comes out I will give it a fair and honest review. I loved 10...still do. But it also is an incomplete game on many fronts. Why they did not continue to build on Madden 10's foundation is beyond me. That game actually has a more organic feel than 11, 12 and now this demo of 13 combined. It is hard to run, change directions on a dime, players feel much more weighty, have some momentum. Could you imagine that game with this passing system and depth of CCM? Wow....what could have been. Instead They keep taking things out, adding things in and they never get any momentum building the game and adding like they used to last gen.

The problem with Madden football this gen is we have never gotten a complete game top to bottom. Madden 12 IMO had a very playable franchise mode...but the on field game play was wonky with super LB's, a stale passing game, and just awful tackling. Over time....I just got fed up at seeing the same things happening over and over and over. No matter how much I loved the off the field stuff, the awesome DPP and hot and cold streaks....it always comes back to gameplay. Always.

Madden has yet to put it all togther this gen. Where as last gen they progressed every year and by 2007 made IMO the perfect Madden game to date. It may not look pretty....but it plays and functions as a complete NFL football video game.

I want Madden 13 to be that game. But Patience? Brother it has been now going on what....six years. When are we going to be able to play a next gen Madden that knocks our socks off? Madden 10 was a heck of a start....what happened?

I am getting the game....I love football, I still enjoy playing Madden and I think CCM has massive potential to hold my interest in a coach and player role. I love the concept of an immersive fully alive franchise mode where I never have to start over. I can just change my character. I find that new and innovative. I can enjoy this game depsite it's obvious flaws and I am not going to base my purchase on a demo....I understand it is an unfinished game on the demo.

I also love the new play by play. Simms and Nance sound great. The stadiuym sounds and crowds sound great. The game looks beautiful. I will play on the zoomed camera as that brings out the gorgeous player models and get's you more on the field. I also feel playing on very slow is the way to go with this new engine (or module/plug in as another poster cleverly pointed out) and I am already getting a feel for the sliders to enhance the gameplay as much as they can. The game is not bad by any means.

However the core fundmental and most exciting thing about football is making tackles. And seeing organic wrap up tackles, feeling like the players have weight and momentum, gang tackles, trip ups, feeling like I laid the wood on a guy and bring him down to the turf.....on this demo it seems like touch football. As soon as you make contact...the players crumble, drop to their knees...bend backwards....man it is funky. I am really confused as to what the heck is going on. I saw an instance where a RB ran into his own blocker and just crumbled. Moving in the pocket this year is sloppy (again on the demo). It is a hot mess right now.

Madden as far as this demo...fails for me on all those fronts. And that is a big thing for long term playability and making claims that this is the best Madden to date.

                          Far from it.

I hope the retail copy is tuned far better than the demo and I am giving this game a shot as I have been a longtime hardcore Madden player.

Ok enough....my point and impressions have been stated loud and clear. Let's see what the retail copy brings and what the total package does for the overall enjoyment of the game.

I am still remaining positive we can get a fun, playable NFL game this year.

Just curious if any of you guys posting demo impressions have played the demo after making slider adjustments?

If not, I suggest adjusting the sliders using one of the sets from the Madden 12 forums and then posting impressions. I assure you will see a completely different game. The demo play is atrocious without adjustment.

Game is tuned for online play (more arcade experience) out of the box

This build better be an old one and better be tuned before Aug. 28th.
I still have extremely high hopes for this just in response to the experience with FIFA. When they released their demo the physics system left the game largely unplayable. I mean it was awful. Then by retail release they had tuned it and it quickly screamed by Pro EVO as the futbol game to have. Are there still moments where a knee gets locked like jar jar binks, yes. Do guys sometimes get launched into the air unrealistically, yes. But instead of that happening 60% of the time they toned it down to about 5% of the time and it plays a much more realistic game of footie. I can see the same thing happening with this year's madden

did not look through 134 pages, just posting my criticisms:

                                • all madden vs all pro: all madden still seems to just jack up players ability rather than there AI, all pro seemed to play pretty well but user interaction is still required a lot of the time.

                                • gameplay: feels similar to m12 despite the infinity engine, i guess it only relates to the collision system. VERY glad L1 looks to have been nerfed, but i think they over nerfed the hitstick...usually i just engage in a regular tackle now.

                                • passing: noticed a big improvement after playing a few games, trajectories seem to differ among the qbs and i was able to float in more passes over lbs without them superman picking them at the line.

                                • running: the jukes still feel a bit stiff and not very organic, i was hoping the right stick would be more like a half step to the side rather than a full lunge horizontally.

                                • physics (weight, strength, force): non-existant...alex smith hip tossed justin tuck last night...nuff said.

                                • presentation: sounds like the m12 theme mixed with NCAA's music, hopefully there is more. i know they have two new commentators, but it reminds me of joe montana sports talk football. all the blue bothers me and i find it distracting, but i'm sure i'll get used to it.

                                • kicking: much better, maybe 60 yarders won't be automatic for once.

                                • graphics: i like the motion blur, hoping this is a lower rendered version of the game for demo purposes cause they look pretty lack luster overall.

                                • user catching: there is definitely a big difference in timing, feels like with the new trajectories it is harder to time the catch...but when you do, it looks really nice.

                                overall demo rating: 9/10
                                gameplay rating: 6/10
